Issue 484 Summer Term

Friday 19th May, 2017

From the Headmaster

This week started for me on Sunday evening at St Mary’s in Charnwood for Choral Evensong. Having cycled past the church on numerous occasions, it was an absolute pleasure to finally go inside this hidden gem to hear the Chesterton Cantamus sing! A sense of calm and serenity pervaded throughout the course of the week with our Year 3-5 pupils finishing off their final assessments of the academic year, the results of which will, no doubt, be commented on in their end of year report.

For those of you who have children in Year 6, I do hope that you have had the opportunity to view the fruits of your children’s labour during Art Week on the relevant section of ‘Firefly’ and I look forward to seeing some of their fantastic work around the school site in due course.

And finally……thank you to the willing PTA volunteers who made today’s Tea Party such an enjoyable experience for our ‘little visitors.’ It was a fitting end to the week with the vast majority of attendees coming from our Kindergarten. Indeed, it has been a busy time for our youngest children as they have also completed visits to their new Reception classes. It looks as if they will definitely take the transition to Fairfield firmly in their stride.

On Thursday 11th May, James, Layan and Niklas, all in Year 4, disguised themselves as pirates and sailed to Mrs Baxter’s class in Year 1 to teach a numeracy lesson. They started with a game of addition Bingo and then it was time for the main lesson. They had made laminated card swords and taught the children a ‘special way of counting gold’ - simple multiplication of 2s , 5s and 10s - by making groups of counters on the swords. They finished the lesson with a game of ‘Whizz, Bang, Splat’! Great fun and lots of learning going on!

Mrs Rudman came to talk to the Kindergarten children about having twins. Lily and Isaac and Lydia and Grace also joined us to talk about their experiences of being twins. We learnt about how twins grow up together and like to eat, sleep and play together.

A huge ‘Well Done’ to all of the children who took part in the Megafinal - the 2nd round of the Delancey UK Schools Chess Championship in Northamptonshire at the weekend. This was a very challenging competition and all of the children played extremely well.

More Chess News - Anika Khare was invited to play in EPSCA U11 England team selection tournament in April and she has been selected to play for the England team in two EPSCA tournaments. Anika also represented the Nottingham U11 team in the EPSCA National girls’ team Finals and the team was awarded 3rd place. Well done Anika!

Al Fresco tickets are now on sale and are available from the Music School office or online https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/lesmusic.

The Year 4 judges, Siyona, Alyssia, Alexandrhia, Mia, Meghna and Siya have looked very carefully at the entries and made their decisions. They were impressed by the careful thought that had gone into the designs, along with the labelling and explanations. The party wear category was the most popular with some eye catching and glamorous dresses.

The entrants from Year 3 – 6 showed their designs in assembly on Thursday before the winners were announced. Well done to everyone and keep designing! Overall winner of ‘Future Fairfield uniform’ – Léon we loved the idea of rocket boots and an infinitely roomy portal bag.

Overall winner of ‘Party wear’ – Keira for a child’s party dress and matching accessories all beautifully drawn.

Additional awards were given for a group entry from Year 6 with designs in all three categories to Freya, Izzi, Jessica, Eleanor and Chelsy.

Photographs of all the entries are on Firefly under ‘Life @ Fairfield’. Mrs Parsons.

Following an action packed week at PGL, Year 6 has embarked on an adventurous Art and Design Technology week. This week the children have been engaged in a host of different activities including painting benches for our playground, making a car chassis on the DAT Mobile with DAT Man, completing their movable vehicles by making the body shell, cooking a delicious meal of quiche and apple crumble, painting landscapes onto canvas, designing and painting their own T-shirt, making figures using wire, using decoupage to decorate a jungle of animals and using a variety of yarns, ribbons, laces and beads to create some beautiful weavings and dream catchers!

SPORTS REPORTS

Cricket v Foremarke Hall

On Saturday 9th May, Fairfield's U9 teams played Foremarke away. Both teams batted first and there were a lot of positives to be taken, we hit some fantastic boundaries and ran some good singles. We then took to the field and bowled very well, taking some catches and ensuring we were in the correct fielding positions. Both teams lost unfortunately, but a great day was had by all. Well played boys! Mr Young.

SPORTS REPORTS

Cricket v Spratton

On Thursday 18th May, Fairfield U9 ‘A’ team played Spratton Hall away in the first hard ball game. We fielded first and the boys bowled and fielded superbly. We only conceded 7 wides in their innings which was a fabulous effort. After an excellent tea, it was our turn to bat and this is an area we need to work on. We were unable to get the ball away consistently and although we hit a few boundaries and ran a few singles we ended up 15 runs short. Well played boys. A great effort. Mr Young.

On Thursday afternoon the Year 4 ‘B’ and ‘C’ cricket teams played an away fixture against Spratton Hall. Both matches were played in a good spirit and were very competitive. Initially we struggled with our ability to bowl on a long wicket and consequently a number of wides were bowled. Both matches were lost by a small margin but we can take confidence from our improving performance as the match progressed. Well done boys. Mr Smail.

Please can children check Sports team sheets on the notice board in the PE Centre and then put a tick or a cross against their name. If they cannot play they must also speak directly to the member of staff in charge of that team. Thank you. Mr Pitts.

Well done to Orla and Sahar who attended the Leicestershire and Rutland Hockey Association Presentation Evening to receive awards on behalf of the Year 6 Girls’ Hockey team. They were delighted to receive a shield and a beautiful glass trophy in recognition of the team’s success at the Regional Finals where they were crowned Champions. The competition does not go beyond regional level at the U11 age group so the award was very well deserved. The evening was made even better when the girls were presented with the awards by David Condon, a former LGS pupil who has gone on to represent England and Great Britain.

Congratulations must also go to Mrs Sutcliffe who won the Pat Ross Award, for contributions to Hockey. Well done Mrs Sutcliffe!
