Lesson three: Learning to deal with disappointment
Activity One:
As a class read this book.
What were three strategies used to help cope with disappointment?

Think back to an occasion when you were disappointed. What happened and why were you disappointed?

Activity Two:
Think back to the previous lesson where you describe an occasion when you were disappointed. Place that incident on the scale below.
• 10-is the biggest problem you’ve ever had.
• 1-Is not a big problem at all.
Now find someone else in the room to work with. Ask them the following questions.
1. Why was the disappointment not a higher number on your scale?
2. Why was the disappointment not a lower number on your scale?
3. If the same incident happened again, would you still rate it with the same number on the scale? How could you respond differently?

Lesson Seven: Growth mind-set
Growth mind-set is understanding the importance of struggling. Struggling means that you are working hard in order to achieve something. We’re not always successful first time round but it’s about persevering and never giving up despite how challenging something might be. It’s important not to compare yourself to others but to focus on your own achievements and your own next steps.

Lesson Nine: Growth mind-set
Write a dictionary definition of growth mind-set.
Activity Two: Paul recently wrote a wonderful information booklet about Ancient Greece. He spent hours on it
and was really proud. His teacher loved the writing but helpfully suggested to Paul that he makes some edits so it’s even better. Paul got cross because he felt it was perfect just the way it was.

Lesson Ten: ToolKit to regulate emotions
Pick two emotions from each quadrant. Write down the emotion and what you were doing to
make you feel this way. Next time, you are feeling BLUE or RED you could look at what you were doing which helped make you feel Green or Yellow.

Lesson Eleven:
Name three occasions from this year, when you have shown your best self. Example: What happened and how did you feel? Someone kicked me whilst I was playing football. It really hurt and I felt cross. How did you behave? I cried at first but I didn’t shout or hurt the other child back. What helped you to do that? I took myself away from the situation and decided to count to ten before carrying on.
