Season Review …Summer’s On the Way
MAY 2018
UPS AND DOWNS…’TURNAROUNDS’ IN THIS ISSUE
After spending the ‘off-season’ working to improve, November 2017 started off pretty tough. Players were trying to adjust to their roles and the chemistry just wasn’t there. Losing 3 senior starters from last year’s team was tough. Those seniors carried the bulk of the offensive scoring load.
When January 1st came around, we had a record of 3-7. The team’s morale was a little low, but with the New Year brought ‘new attitudes.’ Things took a turn for the better at the beginning of region play. The girls pushed through and posted a 9-1 region record and earned a 2nd place finish in region play (even though we had the same record as another team in the region, that team would inevitably win the tiebreaker).
We were able to host a ‘home’ playoff game, but would go on to
lose a tough game to North Myrtle Beach. Working hard all year to get to the playoffs and make a run is the ‘ultimate’ goal. We came up short, but we’re right back at it.
Fundamental development has been the focus of this year’s off season development. Every off-season is spent focusing on overall team improvement.
For the past several weeks, returning players have been in the gym working on their craft. Several Lady Stags are a part of local AAU teams. They get the opportunity to travel and play in front of a various college coaches.
See page 3 for girls who are playing AAU.

Congratulations to our senior; Genesis Weiters. Genesis signed a letter of intent to play for Averett University on May 7th. She has been a part of our basketball program for the last 5 seasons and has played an important role in the team’s success. This is the first time that a Lady Stag basketball player has signed to play for a university in over 10 years. We are looking forward to seeing Genesis play at the next level.
Where are they now? Usha Gilmore ‘96 Usha Gilmore is a 1996 Berkeley High School graduate. She played 1 year at the JV level, and 5 years at the varsity level. Her coaches over that time span were: Kathy Jones, Mary LaFrance, and Brent Stone. During her senior year, she garnered awards such as: Miss South Carolina Basketball and South Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year. Usha would further her playing career at Rutgers University where she majored in Sociology with a minor in African American Studies. She is the only Lady Stag, in the history of the program; to be drafted in the WNBA. She was a 2012 inductee into the Berkeley High School Hall of Fame. What are you doing now?
I have been a college basketall coach for 18 years. For the past 5 years I have been the head Women’s Basketball Coach at Illinois Tech, Senior Women’s Adminstrator, and Director of Facilities.
What do you remember most about your playing career at Berkeley?
Finally beating Summerville.
What kind of advice would you give to current players that are in the program or aspire to be a part of the program?
Take care of business in the classroom, make sure you are taking the necessary classes that will get you prepared for college. Start taking your ACTs and SATs during your junior year. Play AAU basketball. Practice and train at game speed. Stay ready so you don’t have to ‘get ready’. Never let anyonre tell you that you are not good enough or that you can’t do it. Be the best you can be.
Congrats Genesis Weiters

With each summer comes the opportunity to grow and develop as a basketball program. Returning players, as well as, girls who are interested in playing basketball for the Lady Stags; have the opportunity to get in the gym and develop their game.
June Dedication is for returning players as well as rising 8th – 11th
grade girls. During this time we focus on fundamental/team development at a fast pace. These practices are held at BHS in the new gym.
For the past few summers the Lady Stags coaching staff have voluntarily worked with young girls who are interested in playing basketball. The girls have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of basketball: ball handling, form shooting, lay-ups, passing, defensive footwork, and so much more.
This year’s sessions consist of 2 different timeframes. Session 1 = Rising 3rd – 4th grade girls (3 – 4:15 p.m.) Session 2 = Rising 5th – 7th grade girls (5:30 – 6:45 p.m.) Dates will vary. These sessions are offered to girls attending Berkeley High’s (feeder schools). Visit www.berkeleystagsathletics.com for registration information.

If you truly desire to be a Lady Stag, the work you put in during the off-season helps you have a better chance of being a part of the program when NOVEMBER comes. – C. Peace
