FOHA is approached to rescue countless cats and dogs, sometimes stumbling upon an exceptional need that tugs at our heartstrings and reminds us that it’s not just adorable puppies or cute and cuddly kittens who need our help.

Two such exceptional cases are Dan-delion and Blackbeard.

Dumped at a kill shelter in a county where pit bulls are banned, Dan-delion had little chance of making it out alive. Further lessening her chance of survival was her severe, painful skin condition, which would be expensive to treat.

Thumper: Ready for Football Season(Pit Bull Mix – Adult Male) The best thing about football season? The snacks! Nachos, 9-layer dip, burgers on the grill... I dream of a home where I can flop on the couch, turn on a Steelers game and dig into a bag of chips. The reality is I am at FOHA for my third consecutive season, and I don’t even have a television. Hello FOHA? HD flat screen? But I digress. I’m supposed to toot my own horn here and convince you to adopt or foster me. What can I say? I live for human affection. I love all people, big and pint-sized, am house trained, and would make an ideal companion for anyone looking for a loyal and devoted friend. Will you be the one to make my dream of a home come true? Contact FOHA and make sure to ask for either Lynn or Bill, my big-gest fans. You won’t be disappointed.

Not Allergic to Cuddling(Short-hair - Young Male) I hope you want to play with me because I’m more fun than Monopoly, Pictionary, and a Barrel of Monkeys combined! I’m Checkers! Sure, I love to play, but my fa-vorite thing is being cuddled. Although I’m no petite feline, I welcome you picking me

up and cuddling me. I’ll even let you rub my belly. I’m FIV-positive, but I’m strong, sturdy, and healthy -- well, except for my allergies. You know how some people are allergic to cats? Well, I have allergies, too. I eat a prescription hypoallergenic food. When I have allergy flare-ups that cause me to chew on my fur, just give me a little loratadine -- that’s the medicine in Clari-tin. I’m happy to live in a home with other cats, dogs, kids -- I’m an equal opportunity snuggler. I cannot wait to have a home of my own -- and playmates whenever I want!

Puppies: Pancho, Lefty & Sally Rose(Coonhounds, 3.5 months old) The new intake lady at FOHA greenlighted bringing in puppies. Yay!! My name is Pancho. I also have a brother named lefty and a sister named Sally Rose. We got our names from Emmy Lou Harris songs. Pretty clever, huh? It’s cuz we are country cuties. I bet you wanted to see a picture of all three of us. Well, con-sider me the “teaser”. You’ll have to go to the website if you want to see more. There are pictures and videos. Warning: you will fall in love with us. If you are ready for a puppy, we are ready for you: fully vet-ted and looking for love. Fill out an online application and set up a time to visit us.

Adorable Dora(Short-Hair – Kitten Female) Just how adorable is little Dora? Just ask me -- I’ll be happy to tell you. I’m a talk-

ative, outgoing, and gregarious kitten if ever there was one! Although I have two brothers (Darren and Dougie), I insist on being a center of attention and at the center of

the action. Named after the tv cartoon explorer, I have no fear! I like to climb high -- especially up the legs and torsos of my human friends. If you’re ready for action, you just MIGHT be ready for me!

Adopt a Friend

Pebble: Sit & Stay-Don’t Walk Away

(Hound Mix - Adult Female) You wouldn’t know it by this picture, but I am a fun loving, playful dog, with a lot of “get up and go”. Don’t be nervous about the energy thing. With the right amount of exercise and a Manners 101 class, I’ll be walking at your side in no time. If you have another dog, even better! I can burn off some of my excitement rough housing with my new friend. I’ve been at FOHA for over a year, maybe going on two; I’ve lost count. Every weekend I cross my paws that someone will ask to look at me, but no luck so far. Okay, people do look but when they see me bouncing around in my run, they walk right on by. I try to speak up and tell them the spinning and bouncing is my happy hound dance, but apparently humans don’t speak canine. No worries. You don’t have to speak. All I ask is that you sit and stay awhile.

Office Downsizing Hits Home(Short-Hair Tabby – Adult Female) I’m Fifa. When the office where I lived closed, I found myself in need of a new position. My resume is exceptional -- filing, copying, and holding down papers in your inbox. Since I want to be a one and only feline, my current position at the FOHA communal cattery is less than ideal for me. I would prefer a full-time and long-term position as your sole fe-line family member. Compensation is flexible, but daily treats of canned food are preferred. References available upon request.

Did You Know? FOHA is one of the only organizations in our area that helps FIV+ cats. FIV is not a death sentence. Ask us more about these highly adoptable kitties and how FIV and non-FIV cats can live together.

A FOHA volunteer could not turn a blind eye to this pup in pain and whisked her off to Caring Hands Ashburn to receive the vet care she needed. Happily Ever After: Dandelion has found her forever home! Similarly, in March, we

learned about the plight of feral cat Blackbeard from one of our long-time volunteers. Blackbeard was attacked by another animal and suffered significant facial injuries.

With no vaccination history, he required six months of quarantine, surgery, and ongoing treatment. Now 4+ months into his quarantine, his injuries are finally heal-ing -- slowed by his autoimmune deficiency. Meanwhile, his foster mom gives him daily massages to help socialize him….and Blackbeard has returned her affection by al-lowing her to rub his belly. This street cat whom others might leave behind has shown his ability to trust.

Initial and ongoing medical care for these two needy animals was only possible because of your support. With your help, we can continue to save other animals truly in need....those that might otherwise be left behind.

Golden Girl Lydia in Need of TLCLovely Miss Lydia Kitty (aka Lydia) lived in a foster home for four years before her foster mom’s job took her out of the region. Now this sweet senior girl is looking for a new home where she can enjoy her golden years.

Since returning to the FOHA communal cattery, Lydia has been diagnosed with hyperactive thyroid. Her once-beautiful coat is now dry and dull. Like many of us, she’s not

as young and as spry as she once was, and but her purr is just as strong as a kitten’s.

Lydia could definitely benefit from a comfy place to lie each night, knowing she’s not alone and that she’s always loved, no matter what her age. Email Lesley at [email protected].

Help Them Thrive: Become a Foster to a Senior in Need Gentle Ernie Seeks Retirement HomeErnie has led a rough life, and now, like many seniors, his vision and hearing aren’t what they used to be. He de-serves a loving home in which to spend his twilight years.

Ernie was one of many strays who end up on the PTS (Put to Sleep) list in rural pounds. His rescuer said he dug holes in the corner of the pen to sleep in instead of using his house, as if he had no concept of shelter. He even had to learn to eat from a bowl.

FOHA must seem like Heaven to Ernie: shelter with heat & a/c, nutritious food, a full bucket of water every day, and TLC from his volunteer fans. We know his life would be even better if he were to “retire” from FOHA into a family home. Ernie has won the hearts of the volunteers with his sweet and trusting nature. Won’t you give him the chance to win your heart too? Email Cheryl at [email protected].

Rescue Success Story: FOHA Dog VarlyAdopted by Olympian Michael Weiss and Family

From Lisa Weiss: ‘“Varly has been the most amazing addition to our life. When we first adopted him, my husband wasn’t even a dog lover. He agreed to it but wasn’t very excited about the whole idea. Within a few months, he was hugging and kissing Varly, and is now an official dog lover, or maybe just a “Varly” lover.

We have two kids and he fits in very well with our fam-ily. He plays hockey with my son, and even runs on the treadmill. I don’t know how we lived so long without him! He makes friends wherever he goes.

FOHA’s adoption process was very informative. The detailed descrip-tion of him with the ability to meet him and spend time with him, allowed us to make the best decision for our family.” To read more go to Michael’s blog at www.michaelweiss.org/blog.htm.

Foster Family Helps Fearful Cat Learn to TrustFranklin came to FOHA via the FairfaxCountyAnimal Shelter. Did You Know? A cat can hear sounds ranging from 45-64,000 hertz, whereas a dog can only hear within a range of 67-45,000. Also, the average cat has more smell receptors than the average dog, although some dog breeds, such as the bloodhound, are the exceptions to this rule.

Why You Should Foster, by Kara Clark(From Article that first appeared in Leesburg Today, Paws and Claws Issue)

Over the past two-and-a-half years, I’ve had 11 dogs in my house. Thankfully, not all at once. Some for a few days or weeks, others for months. One has lasted the full two-and-a-half years.

So why the canine carousel? No, not because I can’t make up my mind or because I’m cruel. Instead, I’ve fostered for local rescue groups since January 2009, a practice I began with what would become my own dog, Chester. My now-fiancee and I decided at the end of 2008 that we wanted to help out more at Friends of Homeless Animals, an Aldie-based rescue facility we’d volunteered for since earlier that year. We had no pets at the time and, apparently, had grown tired of a household of two. We interviewed to be foster parents at FOHA and, about a week later, got a call about a young, Brittany mix male dog that was going to be euthanized. He needed a home and he needed it fast.

We picked up Chester at the dawn of 2009 and he has been with us ever since. They affectionately call him a “failed foster” because the objective of having someone other than us adopt him did not happen. Instead, we, or I as my too-cool partner reminds me, fell absolutely in love with him about 48 hours in and promptly filled out the adoption paperwork.

This is the reason many do not foster but it shouldn’t be. Chester came into my life at a point where I had secretly been pining away for a dog for quite awhile, as my family pet had passed away of old age a few years earlier. So, word of warning, if you are like I was at the time you may fall in to the same “trap” al-though I would never call adopting a pet from a rescue facility a bad thing.

We began fostering again a few months later and I’m happy to report that Otis, a cute pug mix, was ad-opted to a wonderful woman, not myself, about 30 days in. McGruff, Ruby, Erny, Halo, Myrna, Snuggie, Birdie, Norman, Chelsee all had similar happy endings.

Fostering has had many benefits for my family, the rescue shelters we’ve volunteered at and, of course, the dogs. First, it gets a dog out of a bad situation. More often than not, rescue shelters take in dogs and cats that are on “death row” at county shelters, in line to be euthanized due to space constraints or other reasons. Some shelters, like FOHA, have a finite amount of runs on their grounds that can accommodate all the dogs and cats they want to save. That’s where foster parents come in. We take in a dog so they can save another. Oftentimes rescue shelters will pay for all the animal’s medical expenses, leaving the foster family to provide food, affection and shelter only. Some rescue groups even contribute stipends towards food costs.

For us, fostering has been a great way to have the second pet we’ve long wanted, but may not have the wallet to accommodate. For Chester, it’s meant the playmate he’s long craved. We’ve also seen our dog gain better manners and socialization skills being with another dog.

For the dog and the shelter there are big benefits too. With the dog being in our house, we are able to train it, whether it be working on housetraining, socialization or good manners, like not jumping or chew-ing. This helps the dog to be more adoptable, which is the ultimate goal. And a better-trained, well-man-nered dog will make the adjustment to a new home all the more smooth, lessening the likelihood that the animal will be returned to the shelter.

FOHA is always looking for new foster families, for both dogs and cats. Foster arrangements can vary in time. Available are both shorter placements and longer ones to place some special dogs and cats in a semi-permanent home. Contact [email protected] or [email protected] to learn more.

Fund our Future: Honor or Memorialize a Special Person or Pet In 2011, Friends of Homeless Animals Friends began renovations on the log house situated on our property in order to es-

tablish a Welcome Center. This capital improvement will provide a new, much larger central location for our staff and volun-

teers to greet visitors (from the 96sq ft currently used), and individual conference areas to meet one-on-one with prospective

adopters. This facility will also serve as the stage for youth humane education programs, volunteer training, adopter educa-

tion sessions, emergency housing for staff when inclement winter weather strikes, and allow for fundraising and volunteer

appreciation events.

While we have received gifts of labor and material from the community, we need additional funding to complete this essential

Thanks so much to our long term foster parents who support an older dog from our long term village or one of our beautiful cats:

Friends of Homeless Animals depends 100% on the generosity of supporters. Your financial sup-port allows staff and volunteers to care for hun-dreds of homeless dogs and cats each year.

As a donor, often the greatest impact you can make is when your will goes into effect. By adding Friends of Homeless Animals to your will, either with a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate, you can provide the shelter with a significant gift that will continue our mission for years into the future.
