Honoraria & Memorials

Dear Mitzi, Wow, it has been hot. I am trying to keep my cats cool, so I shut the curtains, keep the air on and the fans going. What else can I do?Signed, Loves My CatsDear Loves, First of all, cats are naturally Cool! You are helping them by keeping your home cool, but the fans don’t make much dierence to us cats. We don’t perspire like you people do, so we need a cool spot on a tile oor and plenty of water available at all times. Some of us . . . me for instance . . . even like to play in the water and let it run on our heads in the basin. When your kitties lie on the tile, they spread out all over the surface. We call ourselves “at cats” when we do that. Happy Flat Cat Weather!Sincerely, Mitzi (The Most Beautiful Calico on the Planet)

Dear Oni,My big German Shepherd mix has my house sitter too afraid to come in the door. I know he would not hurt her, but she is afraid of him because he growls and barks when she tries to come in. I think she should just come in. What do you think?Growler’s MomDear Growler’s Mom,I think you need to take the growling and barking a bit more seriously. We never know what our dogs will do while we’re away if they feel the need to guard. I think your pooch would benet by counter conditioning and desensitizing him to visitors and social situations. He thinks he needs to protect while you are away. Help him realize how to be more discerning. This may be something you need a qualied trainer to help you with.Oni (Contact Oni at [email protected].)

Trinity Comes Full CircleTrinity is a long-haired calico Manx who loves attention, petting, brushing, and even taking a shower with her person.

She had lived with a man in Phoenix since she was a kitten. By the time she was ten, he had taken in so many other cats that there was no room left in the house. He put Trinity in an outdoor cage with four unneutered males and left her there for the next year and a half.

The man’s mother felt so sad for Trinity that she brought her to Prescott and called United Animal Friends. We gave her an indoor room of her own at Kitty City and posted her picture on Petnder. Shortly after that, a woman saw the picture and adopted Trinity for her daughter.

Now Trinity is in her forever home - in Phoenix - but this time she will be given the loving care she deserves.

Free Cuddles at Kitty City! We still have lots of adorable kittens just waiting for you to come by for a cuddle. Some of our Spring litters have been adopted, but others are just getting old enough to go to Kitty City at Petco on Saturdays.

Please call or come in for a visit. Kitty cuddles are free and it lowers your blood pressure. . . and that in turn can help keep you cool in the summertime!

Best Friends May Last Forever, but . . .Our Best Friends Lifesaving Grant expires on September 30th!Best Friends Animal Society, in partnership with PetSmart Charities, awarded United Animal Friends $6,400 for our Low Income Spay/Neuter Program and we want to make sure we have as manycats and dogs altered as possible.

We don’t need to tell you how important it is to have pets altered. Since you are reading this newsletter, it’s likely that we’d be preaching to the choir. But if you know someone who says “We want to get Fluy xed, but we just can’t aord it,” have them call us at 928-778-2924 today!

United Animal Friends is a participating member of the No More Homeless Pets Network, a program of Best Friends Animal Society that oers help and support to animal rescue groups that save lives in their communities. We appreciate the support of Best Friends and PetSmart Charities in helping us help more pets!

The Biggest Loser? At rst glance, these before and after photos may make it look like Brody went on a crash diet. What really happened is that this little puppy came to a Gallup, NM shelter with a huge accumulation of uid called a Seroma. Seromas can be caused by a blunt trauma, when uid leaks out of damaged blood and lymphatic vessels. The amount ofuid in Brody's abdomen would have made it dicult for him to breathe, eat, or do anything at all.

The sta in Gallup drained the uid and gave him the meds he needed to get over this early life challenge and now that he is in our care, the only swelly belly he might get will be from too many treats.

The biggest loser? No way. Brody is a big winner with UAF!

Cosmos Gets More Than A Cosmetic MakeoverCosmos was in rough shape when he was found running loose in Chino Valley. This poor little Doxy had a missing eye, broken jaw and was swollen from head to tail. When Animal Control contacted the owner, she said she didn’t want him any more and had been planning on putting him down anyway because he wasn’t eating.

When a Doxy-loving UAF volunteer saw him listed for adoption, she alerted us and we took him into our care. Most of the teeth on one side of his mouth were broken, preventing his jaw from aligning and healing. No wonder he wasn't eating! After surgery on his mouth and eye socket and weeks of recuperation, in a UAF foster home, Cosmos was adopted by the same volunteer who had brought him to our attention. Through it all, he has been a sweet, tail-wagging trooper and is now the love of his new family’s life.

Thank You Animal Disaster Services!Animal Disaster Services, our sister organization, set up a shelter at Yavapai College for displaced pets during the Doce and Yarnell Hill Fires. ADS volunteers gave nearly 950 hours providing loving care for over 100 animals during the res. Thank you, Animal Disaster Services, for being there when we need you most!

An Unexpected GiftWhen Andrea, our Pet Food Bank Coordinator, was shopping for cat food, a woman noticed her overowing cart and asked just how many cats she had. Andrea told her that the food was not for personal use, but for the UAF Pet Food Bank. They spoke for a few minutes and parted ways. When Andrea was getting out her debit card at the checkout, the woman came up behind her and swiped her own card to pay for the entire purchase! She wouldn’t give her name, but she sure gave us a lot to be thankful for.

Cake Works Does Good Works!Cake Works Library Cafe in the Prescott ValleyLibrary held a Wae Brunch to benet UAF this Spring. Dozens of customers helped animals in need by enjoying delicious waes with assorted toppings while being served by our lovely crew of volunteers. Being a friend to homeless pets doesn’t get much easier than that! Thank you, Cake Works, for your delicious support of UAF!

Catnip Prevents Unwanted PregnanciesSounds like a tabloid headline, doesn’t it? But it’s true! Iris W., a UAF volunteer, makes cat toys lled with locally grown catnip, then oers them for sale at New Frontiers, Timberwoof, and at the annual Stocking Suer event in December. Proceeds are donated to the UAF Spay/Neuter Fund. See? Catnip really does prevent pregnancies! Thank you, Iris!

Library HoundsOur thanks to Mel S., a long-time volunteer and creative mastermind behind this fabulous display in the Viewerie at the Prescott Library. Mel’s display promoted Woof Down Lunch and educated the public about the many ways UAF helps animals in need. Thank you, Mel, Sandy, Linda and Vicki for getting the woof . . . I mean the word out!
