The Art of Picture Framing

You've painted your walls, installed your new flooring and now it's

time to add the bling to your room. Your artwork is what distinguishes

your home's personality. When choosing artwork, our design process

begins with getting to know you and the piece being framed. Is the

piece decorative, or does it have sentimental or monetary value? What

are the colours in the room? Are your furnishings organic with stone and

fabric, or do you have alot of glass and chrome? Will there be alot of

reflection to deal with and what's the potential damage from ultra-violet

rays? Once a feel for your personal style is determined, I will help you

select the artwork or framing to suit your needs. There are literally

hundreds of moulding choices but a framer with experience can help

simplify the decision process. Framing is always designed for the piece

first and then the budget is addressed to suit your needs, always making

sure that it is the design you'll enjoy for years to come. When you factor

in the length of time a picture hangs on your wall, you are really getting

your moneys worth. Ann Shearsby, custom framer and owner of Framing

Matters, would like to share her passion for art and knowledge of various

styles and themes to suit your home.

AAH SUMMER! THE LAZY, HAZY, DAYS OF SUMMER. Ok, maybe not as quite as lazy as I would prefer, but there is nothing that compares with summer.

Summer’s warm fragrant breeze inspires us to take time to relax and dream, perhaps on the deck of a picturesque waterfront retreat or just enjoying a good book or good company in a beautiful garden or your own backyard.

Inside these pages we bring you an off-the-grid, special waterfront getaway and a spectacular labour of love home and garden to arouse your summer dreams. The best part of my job is viewing these amazing homes and meeting the creative people who turned their vision into reality. Gene plays that baby grand beautifully, and Maggi & Fred’s home and garden is a romantic dreamscape that tugs at your heartstrings.

Our Comfort Zone offers a fun shopping experience for that rare treasure, while our Style Picks propose some local finds that make us wish for an endless summer. A one-of-a-kind stained glass piece by a talented artist profiled in our People feature reflects the warm summer sun beautifully.

You’ll find Cottage Etiquette a quick read to prepare you for that invite to a friend’s cottage (I’ve read it…hint, hint), as well as interesting flower planters and ideas for creating your own special outdoor summer space.

We are grateful to our homeowners who invited us into their unique homes so we can share them with you, and of course a big thank you to our advertisers who make bringing this magazine to you possible in both print and online at www.ourhomesmagazine.com/algoma

Summer is short and sweet. We hope this issue of OUR HOMES Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma inspires you to make the most of your summer, even if you never leave your own backyard.

SSPRING HAS FINALLY TURNED INTO SUMMER for us here in northern Ontario. I love the smell of summer… we start with lilacs in our yard and soon our perennials bloom and flourish. I can’t wait for the scent of luscious fresh strawberries from the nearby pick-your-own farm and who doesn’t enjoy the smell of a barbecue or a fresh cut lawn wafting in the breeze? Isn’t that one of the best things about being outside at this time of year?

We’ve been adding perennials and tweaking our backyard over the years to create a space that works for us. I’m a little more inspired to work on it since visiting Maggi and Fred Konkin’s home in Sault Ste. Marie (page 34). They’ve got a backyard retreat that would be anyone’s dream. It comes complete with its own natural stream running through. Maggi’s decorating skills inside the home have created a soft, feminine cottage-style home that we are thrilled to have as our feature home this issue.

Elgie Builders Ltd. created a different retreat north of Sault Ste. Marie (page 24). This home on Lake Superior is a getaway for a man and his son-in-law – their wives prefer their more urban homes. Whether you prefer the city or country, you’ll admire some of the features of this beautiful wood home.

We’ve got our Style Picks (page 14) and the beautiful work of stained glass artist Cathy Barton (page 40). Be sure to read all about The Round Barn (page 20).

This summer issue of OUR HOMES Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma is sure to keep you reading as you take time out to relax in the warm months ahead.

Have a great summer!

POOL PARTYHave a look at the space that you have at the back of the house and decide how best to divide it up to create both comfort and luxury. A pool offers a clear, central focus and function to the yard. This is the area around which to create your lounge or living area as it will be where people congregate for fun. Depending on how large the decking is around the pool, there should be lounge chairs for the sun worshipers. However, we are now able to gauge just how much sun we get with canopies being built right into the lounge chairs. The other new addition to the lounger is hydraulic lifts eliminating the need to get up and adjust that bar behind the back rest.

If the decking has a little more area, you can also incorporate an outdoor sofa and coffee table set up so that area also becomes an ideal place to entertain or to simply curl up with a book and a summer drink. Conversely, you can create a wild lounge area so that your backyard will be party central.

Even if you don’t have a pool, all of this can be achieved on the deck or back patio.

FURNITUREWith the advent of the woven, recycled plastic structure and fantastic outdoor, mould-resistant fabrics, we are allowed to play with shapes and styles like never before. There are many lines of this style of furniture in all price points.

DINING ROOMYou also want to be able to create a dining room outdoors. I think it is always best to have this area closest to the back door of the house as this is typically where the barbeque is and it allows for easy travel of foods and dishes from the kitchen to the table. Again, the advanced styles of furniture means that you no longer have to be tied to the white plastic chairs that are available at the big box stores. With the development of some really fantastic furniture you can see that you are able to create spaces that will weather well and last you for years to come, while achieving the look of fine hotels around the world.

In terms of making furniture choices, you want to look for items that have classic lines. You also want to be sure that they weather well, as our Canadian climate is hard on furniture. Being able to have outdoor furniture that is every bit as beautiful as your indoor furniture allows you to double the size of your living area in the good weather. In the past, it was difficult to host a brilliant dinner party in the backyard as the seating areas were never all that comfortable. I think it best to look at styles that are similar to what you have chosen for the indoors of your house so that you create a seamless feeling between the indoors and the outdoors.

UPHOLSTERYThe upholstery for outdoor furniture can be changed when you tire of the look or pattern. If you use quality neutral-coloured fabrics for the main cushions, you can add a spark with great accent cushions in mould-resistant fabrics that can be found at any good fabric store. Summer by summer you can change these cushions, which will give you the feeling of a new space each year in the same way the surrounding gardens change year-by-year.

As we are pushing on the gates of time to get us back into the great outdoors, don’t ignore the indoors but do what you can to marry the two. What you finally end up with is a fantastic space that will keep you feeling as though you have gone to a resort. Now, the only thing that needs sun block is your skin! OH

ASummer is here and I can see neighbours, friends and family heading outside to enjoy the warm weather. Dinners in the yard or garden visits are what we are turning our attention to. We want to enjoy living in the great outdoors with all the comforts of being indoors. With the advancements in outdoor furniture, that is completely achievable.

Splendour in the Garden

ourhomes

c o m f o r t z o n e

STYLE: A mixture of Canadian and imported

goods, perfect for wedding gifts, home décor

or just because it’s something you like.

INANUTSHELL: Mark and Heather West

bought The Round Barn from Mark’s dad, George,

and his partner Marjorie Butterfield in 1989.

Heading into their 21st year in business, The

Round Barn carries a wide selection of gifts and

antiques. The West children, Malarie and Paul,

also work in this seasonal family business.

THEANGLE: This 80-year-old, 12-sided

barn has an eclectic assortment of gifts

mixed in with a huge array of antiques and

unusual displays. Visiting is almost like touring

a museum while you shop. Delight in the

displays on shelves built into the old rowboat

found on the banks of Thessalon River and

admire the many items displayed atop the old

wagon bought at an auction. Be sure to check

out signs from former train station stops and

old family businesses… and don’t forget to sign

the guestbook at the door.

UNIQUE: The Round Barn produces and

distributes the Canadian Weatherstick

worldwide. This stick, when mounted outside,

will bend upward indicating fair weather and

downward to indicate bad weather. It’s the

perfect gift. You might also want one of Mark’s

handcrafted pudding-stone loons, which range

in size from one to 100 pounds.

MISSION: The Round Barn aims to give a

great product at a fair price and they carry

items you won’t find elsewhere. “We won’t

carry it if it’s located within — at minimum — an

hour of here,” says Mark.

THEPRODUCTS: Look for polished stones,

jewelry, hats, beautiful oversized handbags, and

fair-trade goods such as soft woven scarves.

Natural bamboo soap, Maxwell pottery, serving

dishes shaped like canoes, wooden baskets and

a large assortment of dishes and kitchen linens

are also among the hundreds of items found

throughout the barn.

FAVOURITES: Mark and Heather look for

those items that will be a big hit each season.

This year look for glass rolling pins, wooden

salad claws, onyx wine glasses in beautiful

velvet cases, Pavlo Pottery and many products

by Accents de’Ville. Big glass jars and big

handbags are also expected to be in high

demand. Watch the website for details on

their annual midnight madness held the third

Saturday in July.

THEMEDICINESHOPPEPHARMACYFor Pharmacist, Manuel dos Reis, focusing on patient health is not just a priority; it makes good business sense. “By getting to know my customers and their individual needs, I will be able to

assist them in building hap-pier, healthier, and longer lives. People respond to that. They appreciate the extra effort and the insight. Manuel’s Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy is now in its fourth year of operation, and he credits his success due to the phenomenal community support. Operating a pharmacy in the midst of numerous big boxes with in-store pharmacies can be daunting. Manuel credits

community support as a key reason he’s been able to establish his business. “Doctors have been very supportive. I have numer-ous patients who come in for the first time based on a referral from their physician. I didn’t realize that word of mouth would travel so fast.”A highlight of owning his own Medicine Shoppe pharmacy has been building relationships with his patients. He often has patients who know each other in the community also coming to his pharmacy – without realizing they are going to the same phar-macy. “There is a group of ladies who play bridge together and one day three or four of them happened to be in the pharmacy at the same time. It was fun to hear them suddenly realize that in addition to playing bridge together, they also have the same pharmacy in common!” He is thankful for the support – especially in these times. “I’m doing anything I can to help my patients get the best value in their health care, serving my customers and patients personally, providing them with the high level of care, compassion, and attention they require and deserve.”59 Great Northern Road 705-942-3752 (Please see ad on page 13)

WWhen Gene and his son-in-law John decided to build a vacation home on Lake Superior, they knew the remote location would pose some challenges.

They didn’t imagine the biggest one would be waiting for a bear to leave their garage so that a load of lumber could be delivered.

Bears aren’t the only wildlife to visit this beautiful, two-year-old home, situated in the middle of a conservation area. “We see moose, wolves, even lynx,” says Gene.

And that’s just the way these city dwellers like it. Both are avid outdoorsmen who have been coming to the area for over 20 years to fish, hike, boat, and relax in the natural environment.

When they made the decision to build their wilderness retreat, Gene and John turned to Elgie Builders Ltd., a company with over 20 years experience in the home construction business. Mike Elgie, owner of the company, was eager to take on the job because he recognized what a unique project it was going to be. Not only did the owners want a home that would be in keeping with the natural environment in terms of its look but they also wanted it to be “green.” That meant Mike would have to do things a little differently with this home and it was a challenge he was eager to meet.

First of all, to ensure they were limiting their ecological footprint, Gene and John consulted with Bill Walker of Walker Engineering in Sault Ste. Marie to conduct an environmental assessment. With his input, they decided to build a house that was completely off the grid – electricity, water and heat are all generated on-site.

The home is solar powered using a system designed by Environ-Energy Technologies. Twelve panels on two mounting structures harness enough energy to power a hot water tank, electric stove, refrigerator, toaster and lights.

The water system is also self-contained. Designed jointly by the homeowners and Elgie Builders, it is both simple and efficient. Water is pumped directly from Lake Superior into three 600-gallon holding tanks in the basement of the property using over 250 feet of hose and a gas-powered pump. The tanks are linked together so that as one is depleted, the system automatically draws water from another tank.

Gene, who is a retired engineer, carefully determined the amount of

water that would be necessary for six people to stay three full weeks, using the washing machine, dishwasher, showers and toilets.

The home is kept warm with a combination of wood heat provided by a woodstove in the living room and propane heaters, located at various points throughout the house.

Gene and John wanted the design of the home to be something that would blend in with the natural environment and reflect their love of the water.

They turned to David Gebhardt (Gebhardt Architect P.C.) and the resulting design is this eclectic blend of the rustic and the nautical.

The second floor deck that runs along the entire front of the house is shaped like the prow of a boat and offers a panoramic view of the lake. Inside, natural wood contributes to the cosy feel of a cabin in the woods. The walls throughout the house are four-feet by 10-feet pine veneer panels and the kitchen boasts custom-built birch cabinets (H. Johnston & Sons) that work perfectly with the overall feel of the space.

The most striking element inside is definitely the wall of windows manufactured by Jeld-Wen (Soo Mill Buildall), separating the living room from the deck. They are left uncovered so that the entire room is flooded with light and the beauty of the water, creating the feeling of truly being part of nature.

The next thing to catch the eye in the living room is the Yamaha piano (Algoma Conservatory of Music), which holds pride of place. “Everyone in our family plays” says Gene, “my wife, daughter, daughter-in-law, myself.” As a result, a piano was a necessity to make this retreat feel like home. Getting it up to the second floor living room was easier said than done however; it had to be lifted to the deck with a crane and then maneuvered in the door, still in its box. Pioneer Construction provided the muscle for the operation.

Upon entering the living room, one of the home’s most noticeable architectural details is the massive Parallam support beam that stretches across the entire space. Supplied by Soo Mill, it is made of strand lumber and weighs over 3,000 pounds. By using a wood rather than steel beam, Mike was able to stay true to the overall theme of the home.

Wall coverings are kept to a minimum; nature is the art of choice. There are just a few pieces that clearly reflect Gene and John’s love of the outdoors. A framed print of “Mist Fantasy,” a painting by Group of Seven artist J.E.H. MacDonald, graces an upstairs bedroom while a spectacular Navaho rug, purchased in 1958 on a reservation in New Mexico, hangs above the living room couch.

A series of wrought-iron coat pegs in the shape of fish add a touch of whimsy to the hallway.

Gene and John couldn’t be happier with their new getaway; it is a home truly at ease with the wilderness around it, which is exactly what these two urbanites were looking for. OH

Cottage ETIQUETTER U L E S O F R E L A X A T I O NHOW TO MAKE SURE YOU’RE INVITED BACK NEXT YEAR

BY RYAN LECLA IRE

So you’re invited to spend the weekend at a cottage.Good for you. That means you’re either a valued friend of the owner, or an endured tagalong

that comes with a valued friend. In either case, if you’re not an avid cottager, you may feel out of your element and worry

about committing an accidental faux pas. Be mindful of some simple dos and don’ts and you will WOW your host with how easy-going and low maintenance you are.

COMEPREPARED: Stock your backpack with your own towels, sleeping bag or linens, bug spray, organic soap/shampoo and flashlight. Stock your cooler with your favourite food and drinks. You will be labeled a nuisance if you have to constantly borrow any of these items.

COOKAMEALFOREVERYONE: Who doesn’t love a guest who prepares a lovely meal and provides the Merlot to wash it down? Make sure it’s something that you’ve prepared before so you don’t forget anything. “Can I borrow a pinch of thyme,” is acceptable. “I completely forgot this dish requires pork,” is not.

EMBRACETHEIRTRADITIONS/RITUALS: Follow the pack. Even if it’s not really your thing, be a good sport. If everyone has to take part in a skit around the campfire, put on your acting pants and ham it up with the others. If you head for the hammock while everybody else is playing volleyball, it won’t go unnoticed.

ADJUSTYOURDAILYSCHEDULE: If you’re an early-riser and your hosts are still snoring, get up quietly and enjoy a coffee on the porch. If you wake up to the sound of them tinkering in the kitchen, it’s time to rise and shine. Don’t worry, you can catch a nap later.

PITCHIN: There are always little projects around the cottage, especially if you’re there at the start or end of the season. If you see a wall being painted, grab a brush. Chat with your host about the cottage’s history while you work and toast a job well done with a cocktail afterwards.

ARRIVEEMPTY-HANDED: Never underestimate the impact of a token of your appreciation. If you’re unsure of what to get, go with a staple such as a bottle of wine, a tank of gas for the boat, or a gift certificate for the local marina or hardware store.

FORGETYOURHOSTISVACATIONING: Cottage-time is sacred. Most cottagers wait all year for this and enter it into their day planner as “I’m gone. Adios, losers.” Give your gracious hosts their space and time to relax. Do little things like find your own corkscrew instead of asking where everything is.

GETTOOCOMFORTABLE: Keep the personal items you pack to a minimum and keep everything together and neatly tucked away. In this relaxed setting, it’s easy to get too cosy, but remember you’re on someone else’s turf.

WASTEWATER: Ask your host about any special septic considerations you should be aware of. If they have a hand-painted sign in the bathroom that reads “If it’s brown flush it down. If it’s pee, let it be,” they’re being cute, but also probably being serious. Also keep shower-times as short as possible.

BEAWHINER: Good advice anywhere, but it’s easy to complain if you’re not used to an absence of indoor plumbing, cable TV, cell service, or even hydro. Also, your host is very aware of the bugs and bad weather. They can’t control them either. Just roll with it and brag to all your city friends about how you “roughed it” last weekend. OH

That’s how Maggi (Sparling) Konkin describes her home when she first saw it 23 years ago. She bought it anyway because she saw the backyard and the potential for a beautiful garden.

Today, the house has a peaked roof (Big Daddy Roofing), a new sun room, a front veranda, an interior that’s almost completely white with pastel accents, and best of all – a garden to die for.

Unique to the 53-year-old home are the huge windows and doors, measuring four feet by eight feet, which were left untouched because of their excellent condition.

Indeed, the house style was a bit unusual in its time. It was even featured in a Better Homes and Gardens magazine article, a fact Maggi learned when a neighbour brought her the issue while touring the renovated home when it was part of the Art Gallery of Algoma’s Home and Garden tour several years ago.

Though the rooms are not large, they fit the lifestyle of this busy couple. “We’re retired,” Maggi says. “We entertain differently than we used

to…we like to go out for dinner with friends so we didn’t need the space at home. Maggi and her husband Fred are both retired city employees.

Still, there’s plenty of room for entertaining in this flowery, feminine home. That’s the style that’s apparent as soon as you enter the “Sun Lounge”

– a name indicated by the little pink sign hanging on the wall. The room, an add-on to the original home, features the signature white and pink pastels Maggi loves.

A painting on the wall features a cottage home – one of several similar style paintings found throughout the home.

“I didn’t even realize I was drawn to these paintings until I looked around one day and realized how many rooms have one similar,” confides Maggi.

Straw wreaths, dried flowers, tissue boxes crafted into miniature sofas and angel night-light covers are all part of this signature style Maggi has created.

The entry hall floor has original ceramic tile. Black wrought-iron trim on the door frame leading into the music room has been painted white and decked out with mini lights. This is the only room where Maggi veered away from the pastels.

The room was inspired by her black guitar and a picture of Elvis.“It’s a room that’s out of character for me – but it’s wine and music and

happy times in here,” she says.Walls have been painted a soft beige. The outer wall still has the

home’s original cement tiles. A Liberace ashtray is one of the many musically-inspired items scattered around the tiny room. A once copper wood burning fireplace, now painted black, is rumoured to have been made by the same person who created the Wawa Goose landmark.

A sectional sofa, with black and beige cushions, fronts a vertical blind that acts as a false wall separating this room from Fred’s private space on the other side. The couple chose not to install a wall, as the larger room could be a future selling point.

Not that there’s any intention of selling. In fact, Maggi says they want to grow old here. “We wanted everything on one level for easy access in the future…I think it’s important to want to grow old in your house,” she says.

The open concept living/dining area is mostly turquoise and white with splashes of pink. Lace curtains cover the garden doors that lead to the bedrooms. China dolls, in frilly flowered outfits, are set up at a miniature tea table in a corner of the room. The table, like many of Maggi’s décor items, was found at an antique shop.

Hardwood flooring was installed throughout the main part of the home and ceramic tiles replaced carpeting in the front hall and bathroom area.

Most of the home’s renovations were completed with the help of Todd Killam (Blue Collar Contracting). Building materials have come from Soo Mill Buildall, RONA Cashway and Arrow Home Hardware Building Centre.

Three high-back stools are tucked under one edge of the island (Soo Mill Buildall) that divides the kitchen area. The counter is lower than the sink counter, providing an ideal surface for food preparation. An avid baker, Maggi has three ovens and uses all of them. A new window (Northern Exteriors) was installed over the sink.

The guest bedroom is a bold splash of blue willow floral, a colour scheme that was inspired by the ceramic bowl and pitcher Maggi once made at a ceramics class.

More flowers abound in the master bedroom where the linens have been created from bridesmaids’ dresses worn at daughter Stephanie’s wedding. Local seamstress Janice Cummings brought the idea to life after Maggi found a matching wallpaper border.

Despite the beautiful cottage feel in the home, it’s the backyard that catches one’s eye. It’s in full view through the three original floor-to-ceiling windows in the dining area. The centre pane is a sliding door.

Just outside is Maggi’s “Garden Manor,” a stylish storage building/retreat built just last year.

A brick walkway leads down to the garden where a wooden bridge crosses a small stream that runs through the property. Perennial gardens are already in bloom and Maggi, an avid gardener, will plant annuals to ensure blooms all summer long.

Mini lights, installed in the tall trees and the smaller shrubs through underground wiring, are controlled by a master switch in the house.

Music can also be pumped to the garden as well as to other areas of the property.

A small table in front of a fireplace and a gazebo further back provide an assortment of sitting areas.

“You can design something but then you have to live with it for a while to see how it works and sometimes you need to make little changes,” Maggi says. “We do that all the time. Every year there’s another project…but I love it here. I just love it,” she declares. OH

SSometimes it takes a

little dose of reality for one to appreciate the truly good things in life. Just ask stained glass artist, Cathy Barton.

After being diagnosed with breast cancer 10 years ago, Barton decided i t wa s t i m e t o s t a r t enjoying life a little more. That’s when she retired from her job as a nurse.

A long-time crafter, she had taken a class in stained glass at the Art Gallery of Algoma and turned it into a passion.

“I never intended for it to get this big,” she laughs as she spreads her arms to point out the large space in her family rec room that’s been taken over by tools, supplies and finished product.

“My husband pleads with me to not buy anything else,” she laughs. The finished product includes a variety of home décor items,

ranging from sun catchers, birdhouses and small table lamps to candle holders, recipe boxes and dishes.

“I like creating the more tedious items,” says Barton. “And I like to keep my items affordable for everyone…I find it so much fun to see people like something and be able to buy it.”

Creating stained glass art is more complicated than some might think.Sheets of glass come in a large variety of colours and textures and

prices vary accordingly. “Red glass costs more because it has gold in it,” reveals Barton. While patterns are available, Barton makes her own. Many are

based on customer requests. Once the glass is cut, the edges of each piece are ground smooth

and then “foiled” so that solder has something to adhere to. Pieces are then soldered together, cleaned and polished.

Other steps can include beading on the solder and adding a patina after the glass is cleaned.

“The solder lines fit together like a jigsaw puzzle and this is where the quality of the art comes in,” Barton explains.

After taking that class many years ago, Barton dabbled for a few years. She still had her sons at home and was working so time was limited.

Once she retired, she went from using pre-bought patterns to creating her own.

“You evolve from the plainer, simpler pieces to getting more and more creative,” she says.

Her most popular items have been angels, night lights and kaleidoscopes, which she calls the perfect gift when you don’t know what to buy someone.

Today Barton rarely does just one of any item at a time. She will cut out several of the same pieces, grind them all, add foil to the edges and place them in boxes ready to go to the cottage in the summer where she’l l spend time sitting in the porch assembling.

A long-time recycler since “before it was even cool,” Barton makes tiny decorative items with her leftovers and has friends save bags and boxes for her. This helps her to keep her prices as affordable as possible.

From sur viving breast cancer to battling arthritis, Barton says her journey has been amazing.

“From taking a little course in stained glass to this…it’s been good,” she says.

Barton plans to attend four shows this year; Arts on the Dock (Hilton Beach, July 19), Sylvan Circle Tour (Echo Bay to Bruce Mines, September 12), and in November at Jan Miller’s Show (Waterfront Inn, Sault Ste. Marie) and the Hilton Beach Christmas Show.

You can also reach Barton at 705.949.4487 or via email at [email protected] OH
