June 2017 www.wardie.org.uk SUMMERTIME AT WARDIE Summertime – the thought makes me smile and dream of sunny days, lush gardens, more time to spend outdoors, more light in the mornings and late evenings, barbeque in the garden or on the beach, strawberries and cream, Wimbledon, the Edinburgh International Festival, the Fringe and the Book Festival. It is a good time of the year with plenty of things to do and yet it is also a time to relax as George Gershwin suggested in the song from his opera Porgy and Bess: Summertime, and the livin’ is easy Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high Oh, your daddy’s rich and your ma is good-lookin’ So hush little baby, Don’t you cry Summertime at Wardie is exciting and enjoyable. At the end of term service on 18th June, we are going to highlight and celebrate the learning and activities that take place in the Halls when kidz@wardie meet. Please come and share in what the children are going to show and tell us. We are very blessed to have a great team of volunteers who are offering their time, energy and skills to teach our younger members about the Christian faith and why it matters. On 25th June, we are celebrating Holy Communion before the holiday season begins for many. It is good to share with each other in this way before some of us will go away for a shorter or longer break. In the church, too, we will have a summer programme. In addition to the 10.30am morning service, we are going to open the doors again for “Kirk & Breakfast” every Sunday in July and August. We begin at 9.30am in the church with a short family worship. This year, we are going to tell the story of Joseph and his brothers. It’s a family story with plenty of trouble involved, just as in real life families. We then continue in the New Hall with a relaxed Bring and Share breakfast. Everyone is welcome to join and bring along friends. You don’t have to come every Sunday and no registration is necessary either. If you would like to help with preparing breakfast or telling the story, please contact the minster or leave a message in the church office. Every first and third Wednesday of the month throughout summer, the Guild continues to host the Summer Coffee Bothy and please come and join us for a coffee and a good chinwag. Summer at Wardie will conclude with the splendid Gala weekend on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th of August. The theme of the Sunday service in Lomond Park, for no apparent reason, will be “Fake news vs. good news”. It will be prepared and led by an ecumenical team of the Council of Churches for Trinity and Goldenacre. With so much going on, I hope that it will be a rich time for us all. In place of a book of puzzles or Sudoku, should you get bored, I would like to leave you with the follow- ing question asked by Metropolitan Anthony (Bloom) of Sourozh: “What is the basic difference between saying 'I know that God exists' and saying 'I know that love exists'?” May you find God’s love wherever you are this summer, Ute Wardie Players Gala Drama 27th August Two years ago we entertained the crowds with ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. This year we have a brand new play for the Gala afternoon in Lomond Park. Q&AOne of the most refreshing aspects of my recent travels to continental Europe was the absence of talk about Brexit tensions or hostility towards the UK. Quite the opposite, most Europeans deeply regret that Britain is leaving the European Union. There is a fondness about the UK and its traditions that attracts many visitors from across the channel.

At the beginning of the year, I was pleased to receive a surprise mail from one of my former confirmands in Germany. A few months later, thanks to a generous response from Trinity Nursery and members of our congregation, Rahel arrived in Edinburgh enjoyed the proverbial warm Wardie welcome. Before she was due to leave, I asked her a few questions about her stay. Ute

Hello, I am Rahel and I am 17 years old.

Where do you come from and how long did you stay here?I come from Freiburg, a town in the South of Germany. I arrived in Edinburgh in April on Easter Monday and stayed until 16th May.

Why did you come to Scotland? At our school, it is customary to do a social placement in class 11 (the equivalent to S5) to understand what it takes to work with other people. I wanted to do my placement outside Germany and found a place at Trinity Nursery which is based at Wardie Church.

What did you do during your placement? My work at the nursery started every morning at 8.30. The first thing we had to do was to set up the toys and prepare the craft materials for the children. When they arrived, I played with them, read some stories, and looked after them outside in the garden.

What did you learn? During my time here, I enjoyed seeing so many new things and meeting with so many nice people (Rahel went for walks in the Pentland Hills and along Loch Lomond. She visited Glasgow and went to St. Andrews together with her host family. She also went on a bus trip to Loch Ness, a present from Trinity Nursery. She went up the Crags and Arthur’s seat).

What are you going to do now? When I return home, I still have two more years at school. But once I have finished school, I would like to travel more. I would like to come back to Scotland and Edinburgh, because it is a lovely place with a wonderful landscape and a lot of nice people.

Thank you for welcoming me, for talking to me and for my new experience.

See you, Rahel

It’s Goodbye from Elaine

As most of you will be aware, I will be leaving my post as Church Secretary on 2nd June.

I have been at Wardie for the past 8½ years, during which time I have very much enjoyed working with everyone, both members of the congregation and the wider community. However, I feel it is now time to move on to other projects and interests.

I would like to thank you all for your support, kindness and encouragement over the years and wish you every blessing in the future. Love Elaine

Pennies for TildaThis year we are hoping to achieve the annual sum of £1,000. At the end of April we had £685. Last year several people gave us cheques for Wardie with Tilda written on the back which allowed us to give the Gift Aid to Tilda. Now as there are so few pennies in circulation we are happy to accept coins of all denominations.

We keep in regular contact with Marion Conacher. Her replacement knee has improved this year and she has been able to be a guide for the National Trust. She would dearly like to visit Tilda once again in November.

WARDIE GUILD

Our last meeting of the session was our Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at the beginning of May. We had a very good turnout and many of the ladies (and two men) wore an interesting hat which you can see in the accompanying photo. We enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea and ended with songs by Barbara Brodie and Margaret Donaldson.

As I have mentioned previously, there will be coffee throughout the summer and Maureen’s poster shows you the dates of the SUMMER COFFEE BOTHY!

We start again with our regular meetings on the 13th of September 2017 with a Communion and Dedication by Ute our minister.

Starting in September we will be serving coffee at 10.15 am and the meeting (with Speaker) will start at 10.30 am but it will still finish at the same time as before.

I hope you all have a lovely, restful summer whether you stay home or go off on holiday.

Looking forward to see you all in September...new members always welcome! Wendy Sodergren

Three members of Wardie Church took Prudence the Piggybank (pictured above) to visit the Bank of Scotland staff at Goldenacre. The pig was covered with ideas which the congregation had written on ‘renewable money’ on how we spent time and money in a more sustainable lifestyle. Letters were given to a senior member of staff to explain Christian Aid’s Big Shift campaign. The Bank is to send one of the letters to the CEO asking for a commitment to a phased reduction of investment in fossil fuels and increased investment on sustainable energy.

Wardie Book of RemembranceDuring the Summer months the book will be going to the cal-ligrapher to have names added. If you would like to add a name please contact Kate Clegg 5522596. The cost is £20 per name. The pages in the book are turned regularly but if you would like to see a particular date , that can be done by contacting Kate or the Church office. There are now 197 names in the book.

Give to GrowWardie Church Season of Money 2017

In the last few weeks you may have heard talk of (or perhaps witnessed) the Stewardship Convenor dressed as a tree. Why? Well, we are asking you to consider whether you could increase your regular giving to the church – it’s your support that keeps us going and growing.

Please contact the Stewardship team for more information on how to increase your giving and Gift Aid your donations – increasing the amount by 25% at no extra cost to you. Contact Grant Ballantine, 0131 476 0062, [email protected]
