HANDYMAN PROGRAM

Submitted by: Courtney Iburi, Specialist

T ake advantage of the summer weather and let the Handyman Program complete small home repairs like repairing broken porch steps and railings or replacing outdoor light fixtures with a

motion sensored light. As always, safety first! The Handyman can install handrails and/or grab bars in your bathroom or other places in your home. If you don’t already have a carbon monoxide detector in your home, let the Handyman Program put one in for you today!

If you’re not sure the Handyman Program can help with a repair you need, just call Karen at the Genesee County Office for the Aging at 343-1611 for more information. For home repairs that are larger than what the Handyman Program can do, we will gladly refer you to other programs in the community that may be able to assist you. Many of these programs have income guidelines to qualify.

To Qualify for the Handyman Program You Must Be:

1) a Genesee County resident, 2) be 60 or older and 3) be a homeowner, but renters may benefit in some circumstances, with their landlord’s approval.

This is one of the many wonderful services made possible by the Rochester Area Community Foundation’s Muriel H. Marshall Fund for the Aging in Genesee County.

Loan Closet Submitted by: Jill Yasses, Specialist, Aging Services

T he Office for the Aging is happy to offer several assistive devices on loan for Genesee County residents, 60 years

and older. The office has walkers, commodes, wheelchairs, shower benches, etc. Although the office does have a service to disinfect items upon their return, we ask you to return your borrowed items in good, clean condition. We thank you for your consideration. If you would like to borrow an item, please feel free to call us at 343-1611 to see if we have one in stock and we’ll have it all ready for pickup for you.

*** HEAP eligible households do NOT automatically qualify***

Please check to make sure you income qualify IF you do not live in Section 8 subsidized housing.

The program provides for up to $100 in material costs and labor is free of charge for households

of one earning $41,800/year or less or for households of two earning $46,350/year or less. If a household earns more, we suggest a $10/hour labor contribution and that the individual covers

the cost of their materials. All contributions to the program go back into providing these wonderful

services to the community.

-Senior Spice Corner- Are You a Caregiver?

Submitted by Dan Crofts, Program Assistant, GCASA

W arm greetings! This is Dan Crofts, coming

to you from the Prevention floor at

GCASA. I hope your summer is going

well, and that you are ready for another

edition of Senior Spice Corner! Well, it’s July, which means warmer weather and many opportunities for fun outdoor festivities. But for some people, getting out of the house for recreational purposes is a luxury. Are you one of these people? Are you caring for an ailing spouse or other relative? If so, do you sometimes feel left out of what’s going on outside of your home? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you are not alone! Many people – especially senior citizens – find themselves having to act as caregivers. I think anyone in that position would agree that it is like a full-time job with long hours, no pay and no benefits, but also a labor of love. With all the pressure that comes with caring for an ailing loved one, it’s very easy to get frustrated, discouraged and stressed. This is a serious issue, because long-term stress has been shown to have negative effects on the immune system and pose significant risks for people’s health. Here are just a few questions you should ask yourself to see if you have symptoms of caregiver stress: Are you often irritable? Do you have trouble sleeping? Do you spend a lot of time crying or feeling depressed? Do you find yourself having headaches, back or neck pain?

If you think you may be suffering from caregiver stress, you should talk to your doctor. He/she can give you some tips on how to effectively manage your stress. Some steps you might take are as follows: Breathing Exercise- This exercise is very simple. You just breathe in slowly through the nose, keep breathing until you can’t breathe in any more, hold it for a couple of seconds, and then exhale slowly through the mouth until you can’t breathe out any more. Repeat this several times in one sitting, and you will find that you feel more physically relaxed. Physical Exercise- The more active you are, the more prepared your body will be to deal with the effects of stress. You don’t have to do anything strenuous – even simple exercises like taking a walk, stretching, aerobics and swimming can have great benefits for both mind and body.

Find Support- Whatever your experience, there are a lot of people out there who know how you feel. July might be a great time to start networking with other caregivers in the community. Maybe you could get together and organize a bridge club, or just a time to meet and talk about the ups and downs of the past week. It will be good for your mental health and well-being and, at the same time, help you become a better caregiver to your loved ones. Whatever you do, don’t let the caregiver blues put a damper on your summer. Make sure you take care of yourself, too! For information on GCASA Prevention programs, contact Shannon Ford at (585) 815-1876 or [email protected].

Transportation Options Expand for Genesee County Seniors

Submitted by: Courtney Iburi: OFA Specialist, Services for the Aging

A s of April 1, 2011, Community Action of Orleans & Genesee has expanded their CATS Assisted Transportation service, most commonly known as “the CATS bus”, to include two new services

for Genesee County residents, age 60 and over. The new offerings are: 1) weekly rural shopping trips to Batavia and 2) weekly out-of-county medical trips to Buffalo and Rochester. This is made possible using grant funds from the Rochester Area Community Foundation’s Muriel H. Marshall Fund for the Aging in Genesee County. CATS Rural “One-Stop Shopping” routes are as follows: Monday: Corfu, Darien, Pembroke, E. Pembroke, Indian Falls, Basom, Alabama, Oakfield, (Elba- depending on the rider’s location and bus availability) Tuesday: LeRoy, Stafford, Byron, Bergen (Elba - depending on the rider’s location and bus availability) Wednesday: Attica, East Bethany, Pavilion Thursday: Batavia (City/Town), Alexander CATS “One-Stop Shopping” service begins at 9 am with at home pick-ups. Around 11 am riders are dropped off in Batavia at one shopping destination of their choice. They are picked up about one hour later around the noon hour and are returned home by 2 pm. This schedule is approximate and depends entirely on the number of riders and their distance from the main route. Should there be fewer riders or less distance to travel, the time frames would be shortened. The purpose of this rural shopping service is to ensure all seniors in Genesee County have access to transportation services for their grocery, pharmacy or other personal shopping needs. Assisted transportation services help people who need assistance getting out of their homes and onto the bus or need help getting their groceries loaded onto the bus and into their home. Out-of-County Medical Transportation will also be provided by CATS. If you are age 60 or older and need transportation to medical appointments in the Buffalo or Rochester areas, consider scheduling your appointments during the following times, so we can assist you:

***Tuesday afternoon - Buffalo*** *** Friday morning - Rochester***

Prior registration through Office for the Aging is

necessary to begin taking CATS bus trips. Please call our office for more information at 343-1611.

Office for the Aging (OFA) Transportation Coordination Program, also made possible through the Muriel H. Marshall Fund for the Aging, assists seniors and their caregivers in understanding transportation options available; and will connect them to the services that meet their needs. If you are interested in CATS bus services or in learning more about other transportation available such as Batavia Bus Service (B-line), OFA Medical Transportation Program for Genesee County medical appointments or OFA Volunteer Transportation Program for out-of-county medical trips, please do not hesitate to contact us at 343-1611.

W ith major changes coming to EPIC, beginning in July and other changes effective in January 2012, you will need to look at your drug coverage. EPIC will

Have You Thought About Your Pet?

Submitted by: Jill Yasses, Specialist Aging Services

Y ou are a widow and all your children are grown and moved out of the house. You spend the majority of your day with your loving companion, your pet. You feed her,

walk her and take her for car rides. In return she gives you unconditional love. She greets you at the door when you get home and keeps your feet warm while you relax. Did you ever stop to wonder what would happen if you did not walk through the door one day? Who would take care of your loving pet? Who would meet her basic needs including love? Imagine this scene: You are at the grocery store and start to have chest pain. 911 is called and you are rushed to the hospital. When you left your home that day you never expected anything like this to happen, but the reality is that it can happen. Your loving pet waits by the door, waiting for you to come home but you never arrive. So many times when people plan for the future they forget about making plans for their furry friends. How can we plan for our pets’ future? Talk to your friends and family. Find someone you trust and who is willing to give love to your pet just as you do. You also want to make sure that person is able to care for your pet. Is their living arrangement appropriate for a pet; are they able to manage the care of your pet? Hopefully you will never have to put that plan in place but again, no one knows what the future holds. If something does happen to you whether it is short term or long term, you will know that your loved one is being cared for as you would want. In New York State you are also able to set up a Trust for the future care of your pet. If this is something you are interested in you will need to seek legal advice. Your pet is always there for you, now it is time to make sure you always make sure someone is there for them.

Are You Helping / Caring for a Loved One?

Submitted By: Ruth Spink, Services Administrator

Y ou spend your days and hours helping someone you love with showers, bills, shopping, dressing, meal preparation, doctor appointments. Did you ever stop to wonder

who would do this for them if you could not? Imagine this scene: You have a parent, spouse, child, disabled adult child that you are caring for. You are driving to pick up some milk & lettuce when someone crosses the center line and hits your car head on. Who is there to pick up the pieces for your loved one? It’s not a pleasant thought, but it’s a potential reality. There are things in life that we have no control over, so we’d best do all we can to provide for the ones who depend upon us to get through each day. Did you know: We are seeing more and more persons caring for someone (including being guardians of adult disabled children) and they haven’t given thought to planning for the care of that loved one’s future if something happens to themselves. Put it in writing and have a backup plan. In simple terms: A power of attorney is a legal document that names a person (an agent) to act on someone else’s behalf in order to make important decisions. That “agent” is chosen by the person wanting to name someone. For example, John is a widower. John wants to give his daughter, Mary, legal authority to act on his behalf. He can make that choice himself and sign that document with a notarized signature. A guardianship/conservatorship is a legal process that names a person (a guardian/conservator) to act on someone else’s behalf if that person is unable to choose someone on their own. It is a lengthy and costly process and has to be decided upon by a judge. Often, this is done when a power of attorney document was not possible. For example, Alex is legal guardian of his developmentally disabled daughter, Lisa, who was unable to understand what she would be signing. If either of these documents are in place, it is generally recommended that there be an alternate/successor guardian/conservator wherever possible and appropriate.
