GLENWYCKS U M M I T A T

November 2019

Growing up, I remember November as the month of winding down. Our leaves were raked, the lawn chairs and grill were stored in the garage, Dad had serviced the snowblower, and

we were offi cially ready for winter.

One particular November, temperatures started to rise and snow seemed a distant threat at best. Rather than waste those balmy November weekends, my parents decided we’d visit the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. What at fi rst sounded like a torturous exercise to me as a 12-year-old child, soon turned into a lifelong love aff air with a gift ed American artist and his prolifi c rendition of the warmth, innocence, humor, and hope of a bygone era.

Through his paintings and illustrations for the Saturday Evening Post, Rockwell captured American social history in a way that is both illuminating and inspirational. My favorites are his 1943 series entitled Four Freedoms. Within these masterpieces, Rockwell poignantly illustrates our fr eedoms of speech and worship, and our fr eedoms fr om want and fear.

This November, I invite you all to revisit and remember Norman Rockwell’s America. It’s a beautiful sight to see. Enjoy!
