through tangible, purposeful giving.

Pay-It-Forward by helping others as an expression of thanks for good turns in

your own life.

This is the premise behind our newly launched campaign to benefit various funds and programs of the Summit Medical Center Health Foundation.

We’re borrowing the Pay-It-Forward concept from the 2000 movie based on the novel of the same name by Catherine Ryan Hyde. Haley Joel Osment, the star, launches a good-will movement supported by Helen Hunt as his single mother, and Kevin Spacey as his social studies teacher.

In October we celebratedBreast Cancer Awareness month with the first Pay-It-Forward promotion for mammograms. Staff, patients and visitors couldn’t miss

the giant pink ribbon over the fireplace in the lobby that called attention to the need for donations to the mammogram fund. Gifts of any amount will help uninsured or underinsured women pay for regular digital screening mammograms.

The Foundation will feature Pay-It-Forward displays in

Dancing with the Mountain Stars dazzles Summit County and reaches new level

A truly decadent dessert no one could resist! The menu heralded a “Dark Semi Sweet Chocolate Vortex Vessel with candied Ginger Crème Brûlée topped with Diced Mangos and Blackberries on a Blue Lychee Sauce.”

The Keystone Resort Conference Center was rockin’ and rollin’on Saturday, September 25 as ten local celebrity dancers, along with their Los Angeles and New York professional partners, strutted their stuff all in the name of charity. Guests were greeted by nearly life-sized banners of the local celebrity dancers hanging from the chandeliers in the conference center hallways. The 3rd Annual “Dancing with the Mountain Stars” fundraising event kicked off the evening with a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception and silent auction, complete with the Jackson Surgical Table on display in the ballroom.

While results are still being tallied, goals were reached and exceeded. When ticket sales reached the initial goal of 600 guests several weeks before the event we stretched to accommodate another 50 guests and ultimately sold out at nearly 700. Just shy of the $200,000 goal, more than $177,000 was raised to purchase the second Jackson Surgical Table for the new operating room scheduled to open in January. The Silent Auction featured more than 140 items and netted close to $21,000 thanks to very generous local businesses and individual donors. We added two large screens this year with live action of all the dance performances. So the bar has been raised; the challenge is in full swing as we anticipate an even more successful event in 2011. Watch for early ticket sales as we work toward another sold out event.

OR nurse Jody Thompson kicked off the evening with her crowd-pleasing Cha-Cha. Most are used to seeing her in scrubs and were wowed as she twirled in her spectacular beaded dress.

Above: Even backstage Jody was relaxed and smiling.

Dr. Greg Poulter stepped outside his normal routine as a renowned spine surgeon and performed a traditional Paso Doble. Greg said, “I danced to show my support and gratitude for the efforts to improve our operating rooms.”

Foundation Board President Bill Souba unwraps a farewell gift as Paul Chodkowski extends best wishes and thanks to Bill and his wife Lisa as they leave Summit County for a new life in Bozeman, Montana.

Jerry McFarland (Facilities Director) and Mark White (Security Director) helped Anne Bartell (Surgery Director) wheel out the Jackson Surgical Table onto the dance floor for a center stage demonstration. Even Resusci-Annie was “dressed to the nines” for the gala event.

Linda and Mike Clem cut the ribbon to the new SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) room in the Emergency Department on August 4. Through their generous gift, the exam room was created in an existing space in the department. The new room was blessed and dedicated as a safe and caring environment for comprehensive exams and evidence collection. A plaque reads, “The SANE room was made possible by a gift from Linda and Mike Clem” and was unveiled at the end of the ceremony. Community members, board members, law enforcement officers, Advocates for Victims of Assault representatives from the 5th Judicial District enjoyed refreshments at the Open House following the blessing and ribbon cutting.

Paul Chodkowski had the honor of announcing the first dancer for 2011—Jodee Trainor, VP Patient Care/CNO. Rumor has it that Jodee has already started training and has installed a mirror and dance barre somewhere in the hospital.

Board and Donor Spotlight

Jerry has served on the foundation board since its inception. His first visits to Summit County were in the 1970’s and he and his wife Janie have been full-time residents of Keystone for the past 10 years. Now retired, Jerry was an executive with Bank of America in Kansas City, Missouri. He served on the Flight For Life Campaign Cabinet and was extremely active in the fundraising efforts to build the hangar. When not volunteering with Janie at the information desk at the hospital, Jerry enjoys his community service work, golfing, traveling, and designing and building homes. Jerry and Janie have three children and five grandchildren.
