HOLIDAY PARTY – ANOTHER SMASH EVENT! By Nora M. Perez

The Holiday Party on December 16, 2012 brought smiles to residents as the air was filled with warm holiday spirit.

Preceded by a week’s nightly Hanukah candle lighting, the Holiday Party was yet another feather in the cap for the

Welcome/Social Committee in setting the tone for a family-oriented, wholesome event and camaraderie among residents.

Red and white poinsettias, Christmas balls, a lighted

Christmas tree and the Menorah all adorned the lobby, and

Christmas songs filled the room. Residents feasted on a

variety of gourmet sandwiches and a whole array of dishes,

such as tomatoes & mozzarella, potato and macaroni salads,

dips & crackers and more. A dessert table of chocolate and

vanilla cakes, home-made crumble cakes, doughnuts and

chocolates satisfied everyone’s sweet tooth!

To everyone’s delight, kids crafted and decorated their own

gingerbread house, and both children and adults danced

through the end of the party!

“It was yet another fun-filled party,” said one resident,

“which highlighted the wonder and enjoyment of the

season.”

OUTSTANDING EMPLOYEE – EUGENE LIRIANO

By Nora M. Perez

Eugene joined the Summit House as a part-time porter 7 years ago, and he became full-time 4 months later. In less than a

year, Eugene was promoted to full-time doorman. In this role Eugene not only greets and opens doors for residents and

guests, he also receives delivery of 20-30 packages each day. He announces and logs all guests, answers phone calls,

records keys borrowed by residents or cleaning staff, and also helps coordinate resident move-in’s and move-out’s with the

Management Office. Eugene ensures that contractors for unit owners enter the premises at allowed hours, helps residents

with their groceries, and a host of other things. “The tasks of a doorman are many and varied,” Eugene says, “but knowing

that I am helping everybody makes me happy.”

In his spare time, Eugene is a volunteer as a CCD (Confraternity of Christian Doctrine) teacher in his Catholic parish, St.

Joseph’s of Palisades. In this role, he helps prepare 15-16 year old teens for the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Eugene is married and has a 3 ½ year old son. He likes bowling and baseball, watching scary movies and eating out with his family.

As a footnote, Eugene was selected by residents as the outstanding employee. In

appreciation, he receives a $50 gift card.

As one resident puts it, “Eugene is very courteous, polite, always ready to help and goes an

extra mile with a smile!”

PORTRAITS OF FOUR-LEGGED FAMILY MEMBERS

By Laura Lehman

For many residents, pets are part of their lives and are treated as family members. The “meows”, “woofs” and “tweets” bring so much love and joy to their owners. Their unconditional love is unparalleled. It is fitting to showcase their fascinating personalities and unique antics.

Burger is a fun-loving 4-year old puggle who loves to eat everything & kiss everyone. He is currently single & is always looking for a good time. Burger enjoys long walks along Boulevard East & never misses an opportunity to shake down his favorite doormen for a treat! Lucy is 2 years old & was rescued from North Shore Animal Shelter. She can do tricks on command. Besides being pretty, she loves people, especially kids! Tanker says – “Scratches on my butt and hugs from the kiddies; Milk bones and cookies they make me feel giddy; Swimming and running in Summer and Spring. These are a few of my favorite things.” Tesoro is a very busy Yorkie who eats raw veggies. He thinks his owner’s dresses are his bed & is a Mama’s boy!

Zoe’s family says, “She is our beloved pup who is only 4.5 lbs., so we think of her as a puppy. She's a bit feisty with other doggies but is great with people.” Kent is a 6-1/2 year old rescue beagle who enjoys chasing squirrels, long walks in Hudson County Park, & spending his days with his step-mom, Susan. Dustin is a toy poodle that is 12 years old & so cute. Look at that face! Dakota’s owner says “I have a totally amazing dog who I've raised since she was 3 weeks old. She’s incredibly smart & quite an impressive athlete, winning several agility competitions in her younger years. She is also an incredible swimmer & body surfer, but above all, she is our precious, sweet angel who is completely adored by our family & friends! “

Honker is a mischievous male that likes to run to the back bedroom on foot & stare at himself in the bedroom mirror. He lives in the same household as the Cockatiels below. Kazi, the darker one, and Shikki, the lighter one with deformed feet, fight like a married couple. Only Shikki likes to be picked up which makes Kazi psychotically jealous. D-Bo has lived in the Summit House since the age of 6 weeks & just turned 11 in October. His owner does her best to keep him away from those who aren’t dog-friendly to avoid barking. He’s very loving with kids & will normally smell & kiss hands before letting anyone pet him. D-Bo has been referred to as a local politician --always stopping/waiting to say hello to all in the building & in the neighborhood. D-Bo is a very curious, friendly dog, & his owner hopes you are among the many who love his sentimental personality. D’Artagnan is a cute kitty & his breed is Cornish Rex.

Mini is also a Cornish Rex & equally as cute as her sibling. Coco Chanel is a Bichon Frise & lives with the cool cats above. Chester is 11 years old & loves chasing squirrels, tennis balls, getting belly rubs & London broil. He’s pretty shy & likes to mind his own business most of the time unless he knows you well. Don't take it personally if Chester doesn't stop & say "hi" sometimes. Max is partial to people but not to dogs. Unknown to most people, Max speaks with an Italian accent!

Lucky was rescued as a kitten from an abusive family.

She’s stayed in her new home through the years & remains a

beautiful & very loving cat. She’s very attached to her

owners & has some funny quirks: If you rub her rump, she’ll

start licking herself non-stop; she snores loudly when

sleeping & squeaks when dreaming. Her skinny figure belies

the fact that she's a glutton & a bit picky with food. Her

exact age is unknown but is probably 14-15 years old. Lucky

has never been to a vet. She’s very special.

Gillie is a 10-year old Shelty & a long-time resident of the

Summit House.
