Fluorecence of Moss is the second movement of a four-movement suite, depicting different lights: Aurora Borealis in Sky, Fluorecence of Moss, Moonlight on Seashore, and Sunshine at Mountain. This movement is inspired by moss of Kyoto’s temple and Matsuo Basho’s haiku (poem).

When I walked into the temple in Kyoto, there was moss instead of grass. It was glowing. Not shining like stars but in a very subtle, peaceful yet mysterious way. Time frozed. I can even imagine how it was five hundred years ago. The beauty of stillness. Basho’s haiku was written in Kyoto, “An old pond... A frog jumps into the pond, Splash! Silence again.” Time changes, things happen. What matters is the moment, this right moment. Every note we share, every breath we take, and every silent moment we listen to. While the time I was about to finished this movement, tragedy happened in Paris. I deleted the more dramatic part of the movement, so the music is purely peaceful, like a lullaby for wounded souls.

Hsin-Lei Chen A native of Taipei, Taiwan, the young rising composer and columnist of Muzik Taiwan and Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Hsin-Lei Chen received her Bachelor degree from National Taipei University of the Arts (NTUA) studying Composition with Prof. Hung, Chung-Kuen. She studied her Master’s in composition from College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati (CCM) with Prof. Michael Fiday, Prof. Mara Helmuth and Prof. Joel Hoffman. While still a student at NTUA and CCM, Chen has composed numerous instrumental and vocal works for various ensembles, among which Concerto for Violin and Orchestra Deep made finalist in the 2004 Formosa Competition held by the Council of Cultural Affairs in Taiwan. In 2007, her orchestral work, Ebb and Flow, won ERM Media’s competition and recorded by Kiev Philharmonic. PROGRAM program note

The Irresistible Embrace of Singularity According to the theoretical physics, a black hole is an object with such a powerful gravity that it attracts and absorbs everything getting too close to it. Even light is unable to escape this gravitational trap and that is the reason these things are called black – we actually cannot see them because once embraced, light already cannot run away. Time itself stops right at the black hole’s porch called event horizon. The gravitational attraction inside black holes is so powerful, it compresses matter and space to an infinite density where no separation between objects is possible anymore – all becomes one and one is all, known lows of physics cease to rule, all information is erased. So we don’t actually have any direct tool to study singularity, can’t recreate, hold and observe it, can’t even calculate it, we only can witness the effect it causes to the universe around and try to imagine what’s inside of it or is there any inside at all. And in the meanwhile the black holes float out there, consuming stars and putting galaxies together; terrifying, majestic and mysterious.

Timofey Buzina was born in Yekaterinburg, Russia. He began his musical studies on the cello and later continued with studies in Music Theory at the Tchaikovsky Music College (Chelyabinsk) where he also began studying composition with Professor Anatoly Krivoshey. His formal lessons in composition continued at the Musorgsky Ural State Conservatory (Yekaterinburg) with Professors Nikolay Puzey, Anatoly Nimensky and Vladimir Kobekin. He completed his postgraduate studies with Professor Sergei Slonimsky at the Rimsky Korsakov State Conservatory (St. Petersburg).

Timofey has participated in numerous modern music festivals and concerts in Yekaterinburg and St. Petersburg. His works include pieces in symphonic, choral, chamber, solo and electro-acoustic genres and the full score for Antigone, a dance-theater piece that was premiered in

2006 at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Philadelphia. In 2005, Timofey received a full scholarship for the Fontainebleau Summer Music Festival in Fontainebleau, France where he studied with Allain Gaussin and Andre Bon. In May 2010 after the premier of Rocking Shadows Overture, commissioned by the Symphony Space, NYC, for its Wall To Wall: Behind the Wall music marathon, New York Times defined his style as “exuberantly pulsating”. Also in 2010 his work won the 1st prize at the Electroacoustic Music competition in Yekaterinburg. His suite for accordion solo is currently being published by the “Composer” publishing house, St. Petersburg.

Stockholm is an orchestral work inspired by August Strindberg’s Staden (1903) oil painting and my own personal experiences as a Fulbright scholar living in Sweden’s capital during 2012-13. Strindberg’s painting depicts a stormy sea landscape with a glittering, mirage-like city in the far distance. The limited view of the faint metropolis suggests a sense of estrangement from urban civilization and culture. The harsh, thick strokes of Strindberg’s brush reflect the notoriously violent swing between dark and light experienced by all who call Scandinavia home.Having personally experienced Sweden’s extremely dark winter days and contrasting long summer nights, I feel a direct connection with Strindberg’s stunningly visceral painting. Musically, Stockholm tries to capture my memories and impressions of Sweden, such as the absolute beauty of the surrounding forests and shimmering archipelagos, the detached, yet warm (and sometimes neurotic, but always endearing) character of its people, and the palpable anxiousness we all had for Spring’s arrival.

Ian Dicke (b. 1982) is a composer inspired by social-political culture and interactive technology. Praised for his “refreshingly well-structured” (Feast of Music) and “uncommonly memorable” (Sequenza 21) catalogue of works, Dicke currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Digital Composition at the University of California, Riverside. His music has been commissioned and performed by ensembles and festivals around the world, including the New World Symphony, Alarm Will Sound, the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, ISCM World New Music Days, and the Atlantic Coast Center Band Director’s Association. He has received grants, awards, and recognition from the Barlow Endowment, Fulbright Program, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, New Music USA, New York Youth Symphony, ASCAP, and BMI, among others. In addition to his creative activities as a composer, Dicke is also the founder and curator of the Outpost Concert Series in Riverside, CA and co-directs Fast Forward Austin, a music festival held annually in Austin, TX. PROGRAM program note

Requiem (Op. 30) by Jerry Ulrich, for winds, chorus, children’s chorus, and soprano solo was composed in January, 2001. It was subsequently revised for symphonic orchestra in 2003. The present performance is an expanded version (2016) of the original that includes five additional movements from the Requiem Mass. It is a compilation of texts from the Latin Requiem Mass, the evening service of Compline, and interpolated poems of children in the Theresienstadt concentration camp in modern-day Czech Republic. Dedicated to the memory of children who have been victims of violence, it is a riveting and poignant reminder that the hope of children, even in the face of insurmountable adversity, is more powerful than death itself. It is a moving and fitting memorial to children of all cultures and all ages who have been subjected to human suffering as a result of violence.

Jerry Ulrich ASCAP award-winning arranger/composer Jerry Ulrich is originally from Illinois, where he received his early training in music and developed an interest in songwriting. His compositions and arrangements are in the catalogs of seven publishers in the US and abroad. He has composed commissioned works for professional choirs and orchestras, including the Grammy-award winning Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and has written music for colleges and universities throughout the United States and abroad.

Dr. Ulrich is currently Director of Choral Activities at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he directs the Chamber Choir and the all-male Georgia Tech Glee Club. Dr. Ulrich came to Atlanta from LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts (the Fame school) in New York City. His choirs have been featured in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Barclay’s Center, Madison Square Garden, and on national and international television and radio.

Dr. Ulrich’s prior teaching experience includes university positions in Ohio and New York. During 1990-1991 he was Visiting Fulbright Professor of Music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, Scotland. His early training included four years singing with legendary conductor Robert Shaw in the Atlanta Symphony Chorus and Chamber Chorus.
