SKATES NEEDED!
Our students will take part in
skating and broomball activities
at the arena over the next couple of
months as part of their physical education
program. Some of our students are in need of
second-hand skates and helmets. If you have
skates you would like to donate to the school, or
just lend out for the season, please call the
school. Thank you to the Rolling Hills Ag.
Society for allowing us to use the arena again
this year!
Students need to come prepared
on skating days. They should have
skates, hockey helmet (no bike
helmets), mittens and winter
clothing (snow pants for younger students). We
are SO fortunate to have this great facility just
a short walk away from the school.
BASKETBALL ACTION
Mr. Freeman and his boys’ basketball
team will see lots of action this
month. League play takes place each
Tuesday. Home games are
scheduled for January 5 and 26th. Thank you
to Larry Hirch and Blaine Bolen who have
offered to officiate our home games this
season. It is not easy to get officials to come
to Rolling Hills, so we greatly appreciate them
stepping up!
The boys will also compete in two tournaments
this month: January 15-16 at Bassano and
January 22-23 at St. Mary’s School in Medicine
Hat. The boys have been playing very well this
season and are excited about the upcoming
tournaments!

BUS NOTICES
Check the Grasslands
website grasslands.ab.ca to see if your child’s
bus is running on time. Parents are reminded
they MUST contact the bus driver if children
will NOT be on the bus: Dale Marzolf 793-
9231, Eva Fast 409-9099, Doug Harrowing
363-3353.
Grasslands Policy regarding rural buses running
during inclement weather states the following:
If rural buses going to our rural schools are
cancelled due to deteriorating road conditions or
if the temperature reaches -37 °C, the principal
of the school, in consultation with the bus
drivers, will determine if the buses routes going
to their school will be cancelled.
The principal of the school will contact the local
radio station Q-105.7 or The Fox 101.1 to put an
announcement on the local radio station. The bus
drivers will contact all of the students on their
route. Please listen to one of these local
stations for any school bus cancellation
announcements. If bus routes are cancelled for
this reason, they will not operate all day.
Children must be aware of how long to wait at
their bus stop before returning home or going to
a safe place. In spite of the careful maintenance
and driver checks done to our buses on a daily
basis, there have been rare occasions where
there has been a bus breakdown. In the event
of one of these incidents, children need to be
dressed appropriately for the weather
conditions.
If buses are not running, no regular classes
will be offered. Do not send your child to school
in dangerous conditions—if it is unsafe for the
school bus to run it is unsafe for parents and
children to be heading to school.
Please stay home and stay safe!
GRADE 4-6 SKI TRIP
On Friday, January 22, our
grade four to six students will
head to Hidden Valley Ski Resort
in Elkwater (southeast of Medicine Hat) for a
day on the slopes!
This is a HUGE adventure for these kids.
Thanks to funds previously received from
Cookie Connection, this trip is offered to
students for HALF the regular cost. Should
be a great trip… let it snow… let it snow…
JUNIOR HIGH SKI TRIP
The junior high ski trip to
Fernie, B.C., is scheduled for
February 10-12. The bus will
leave early Wednesday morning
so the kids can enjoy a half day of skiing that
afternoon. The fun will continue with two
more full days on the hill, before heading home
Friday afternoon.
Student Information Forms must be SIGNED
and returned to the school by January 11.
Parents who plan to attend should also
complete this form. Payment is due January
28th.
This is a very expensive trip due to extensive
travel, accommodation and lift/lesson/rental
costs. Students will use their fundraising
money and donations from Cookie Connection
to make sure the trip is affordable for
everyone.
Thank you to everyone for supporting the
Kernels Popcorn, DFS Gift, and SUTP Coupon
Books sales campaigns, as well as hot lunch and
milk sales.
MILK PROGRAM
The milk program will resume this
month. Order forms are due on
January 7, with milk starting on January 11th.
NO late orders will be accepted as milk must be
pre-ordered. Milk can be ordered in white or
chocolate, and sells for 75 cents each
HOT LUNCHES
This month, we will offer four
hot lunches. CHS Canada will
be purchasing a FREE pizza hot
lunch for all students on January 4. Yippee!
On January 11, the School Council parents will be
making a Ham & Noodle dish, on January 18 the
junior highs will be serving submarine sandwiches,
and on January 25, the grade five/six class will
offer wraps and smoothies from Fruitas. Sounds
like a yummy month!
SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING
On Wednesday, January 27, at
5:30 p.m., parents are
encouraged to attend a special
presentation on the use of
Google Applications in the
Classroom.
Sean Beaton, Learning and Innovation Coordinator
for Grasslands, will discuss the use of Google
Applications by teachers and students, including
Google Docs, Forms, Calendar, Gmail, and the use
of Google Applications in the Classroom.
This will be a very informative
presentation and parents are urged
to attend.

WINTER BREAK
Mark your calendars!
Students will enjoy a full
week off school, February 15-19. This Winter
Break is the result of the Family Day holiday,
two lieu days and two days of Teacher’s
Convention.
This is a great time to get outdoors and enjoy
some fresh air and fun family activities!
DINNER AUCTION
The junior high class will be
hosting a Fundraiser Dinner at
the community hall on February 24, 5:30-
8:00 p.m. The evening will include a ham
dinner, silent auction, and entertainment by
our fiddlers.
Students are raising funds for their upcoming
Outdoor Education field trips this spring and
junior high activities. ALL junior high students
are required to work at this event. In addition,
they must pre-sell dinner tickets and collect
donations for the silent auction. Donations may
be collected from local businesses, or they can
be homemade (sewing, baking, crafts, etc.).
Parent helpers are also needed. If you can
help with setup, serving, or cleanup, please
contact Mrs. Kohlman.
If you have an item you would like to donate
for the auction, please contact the school.
Your support of this fundraiser is greatly
appreciated! Tickets are available from any
junior high student, at the school office, or at
the ATB in Rolling Hills. Cost is $10 each or
$50 for a family of 6 ($5 for each additional
family member). Thank
you to everyone for
supporting this school
activity!
ACCOUNTABILITY SURVEY
As an annual check-up on the
educat ion system, the
Accountability Pillar provides an opportunity for
Alberta Education and school authorities to ensure
that we are equipping students for success.
The Accountability Pillar uses a set of 16
indicators consisting of surveys of students,
parents and teachers on various aspects of quality;
student outcomes such as dropout and high school
completion rates; and provincial assessments of
student learning.
From January to the end of
February, Alberta Education will be
conducting the annual Accountability
Pillar Survey. In January, parents of students in
grades 4-9 will receive a survey from Alberta
Education. In February, students in grades 4-9
and all teachers will be completing their surveys
online at school.
All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about
experiences with the school. Your participation in
the survey helps provide important information on
the quality of education your child is receiving, so
we encourage you to return your survey promptly.
Survey results will be available to school
authorities in May 2016, and will be reported
publicly as part of their 3-Year Education Plans
and Annual Education Results Reports.
P.D. DAY
On Friday, January 29, Grasslands
teachers and Administrative
Assistant staff will be involved in
Professional Development sessions in Brooks. A
rare day when the kids get the day off while their
teachers go to school! Enjoy the long weekend,
kids!
