We’re celebrating because in 2013 we were able to achieve

2013 was about MOre

The Center’s core purpose is to engage through Art and Ideas. 2013 was a year defined by “more”—including more support than ever before for arts programming in our valley. We measure our success through the engagement of our community—and in this way 2013 was a tremendous year.



DeAR SuppoRTeRS, We are thrilled with all that your support has accomplished this past year. The Center presented and produced three hundred and sixty one programs, classes and events enjoyed by over 33,000 participants. The activities were as varied as a lecture on China’s cultural and economic shifts to a teen workshop on documentary filmmaking. You…our community…talked, laughed, listened and watched. You made, built and considered. You looked with fresh eyes, listened with curiosity and let the wonder of music, storytelling and other forms of artistic expression engage you.

All of these opportunities were made possible through your generous support and patronage.

In addition to the events we offered to the public, we are proud of the internal progress we made this past year in merging The Center and Company of Fools. While some aspects of the merger were not easy (like combining completely different databases, phone systems, ticketing systems and websites!), we are over the hump and eagerly working together to provide programs to the valley that celebrate a professional theatre company and enhance the exploration of big ideas through all artistic forms. The response we have received from Center members and Fools fans alike has been enthusiastic and supportive. This endorsement has energized us and made us exceptionally grateful for this valley’s commitment to the arts.

We look forward to bringing you another year of exciting and diverse programs. Thank you for your participation as donors, volunteers, patrons, students and friends. We hope to see you soon at The Center, at the Liberty or in the classroom.

symposia for the curiousThis year, The Center launched a new initiative to provide the community with an opportunity for in-depth concentrated schedule of programs exploring one of The Center’s Big Idea multidisciplinary themes. Films, lectures, art history presentations, book clubs, seminar style classes and even cooking classes allow the valley’s adult population to dig deeply into the topic of China with experts from many disciplines.

in and Out of the schoolsLast year The Center grew its Education Department by one, and that, as the saying goes, has made all the difference! Education Assistant Danica Robrahn is charged not only with leading exhibition tours for students, but with going into the schools for follow-up visits, bringing focused activities to classrooms whose teachers want to explore a Center exhibition theme or curricular link in more depth. Additionally, with the support of Alan and Wendy Pesky, Danica is working with a handful of teachers to develop new approaches to curriculum through the arts. Our initial foray into this extended enrichment opportunity took Danica into Marcia Grabow’s AP Statistics class at Wood River High School, where students are translating different kinds of data into art installations!

In addition to extended enrichment, The Center brought:

• Musical performers Dala, Okaidja + Shokoto, and David Wax Museum to the schools for special performances and residency work

• Lectures by Clay McLeod Chapman

• Over $63,000 in scholarship money awarded to 42 Blaine County students and teachers to pursue the arts

FilmArt house, indie and documentary films are the focus of The Center’s newest programmatic foray. Director of Performing Arts Kristine Bretall is working with local movie buffs to bring to our tiny mountain hamlet a series of excellent films that otherwise might not make it here. Look for the Thursday night series at the Magic Lantern in Ketchum and films for fun and education at the Liberty Theatre in Hailey. 2013 Films included:
