When San Francisco’s cable cars resume their travels up and down the city’s steep hills next year, they will be riding on steel rails transported by Lykes Bros. S’~eamship Co., Inc., through the Port ofHouston. The cable cars have been out of service since September of 1982 while the systemundergoes renovation. The system is scheduled to reopen in May, 1984. French-built rails for therenovation were stowed in Seabee covered hopper barges that were loaded on board the S.S. DOC-TOR LYKES for the transatlantic voyage. The rails were unloaded in Houston and transferred toSouthern Pacific rail cars for the overland trip to San Francisco. The rails weigh one ton each and are60 feet long. The agent for the ship was Maurice Pincoffs Inc., of Houston, a 102-year-old internationalmarketing and distribution company that deals in steel, energy-related and agricultural products.
