Bottas pips Hamilton to 70th Anniversary GP pole

Valtteri Bottas pipped championship-leading Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton to pole position for Formula One's 70th Anniversary Grand Prix at Silverstone yesterday with Nico Hulkenberg qualifying a stunning third for Racing Point.
Red Bull's Max Verstappen joined the experienced German on the second row.
Bottas's 13th career pole, and first since the Austrian season-opener last month, ended six-times world champion Hamilton's bid for a fourth in a row and second at home on successive weekends.
It also ensured a reversal of last Sun-day's British Grand Prix grid, held behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pan-demic, which Hamilton took his 91st pole and won despite a last lap puncture.
"Things are going to be a bit different to last weekend in terms of the strategy," said Bottas, who beat Hamilton by 0.063 seconds with a last flying lap on a hot afternoon.
"My expectations for tomorrow are nothing more than to win the race."
Pirelli have brought softer tyre com-pounds for Sunday's race, meaning teams should have to do two stops rather than risking excessive wear as they did last weekend.

Johann Zarco claimed a first MotoGP pole position for Avintia Ducati at the Czech Republic Grand Prix in Brno yesterday, edging fellow Frenchman Fabio Quartararo, who crashed on his final lap.
Zarco produced a blis-tering lap of one minute 55.687 seconds, which was enough to ensure he was 0.303 seconds faster than championship leader Quar-tararo on the Petronas Yamaha.
“I can’t believe I got to pole,” Zarco said. “Now I need to use this good position to start well tomorrow.
“The pace is still not the best to hope for a victory but I will continue to learn more about my bike and improve myself (this season).” Quar-tararo tried to claw back the top spot for a fifth consecutive pole but crashed on the penul-timate corner on his final effort.
The 21-year-old Quar-tararo was awarded a front-row spot after KTM’s Pol Espargaro best effort was scrapped for breaking yellow flag rules.
“At the end of the day, it was really important to finish on the front row,” Quartararo said. “I felt I was at the limit and braked way too late in the second-last corner.
“But I’m really happy today as we improved our pace through the final practice round.” Petronas Yamaha’s Franco Morbidelli clinched the final front-row spot on the grid, while Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro finished fourth.

China's Li Haotong may not have been on anyone's radar ahead of this week's PGA Championship but he thrust himself into the mix with a bogey-free trip around TPC Harding Park on Friday to grab the second-round lead at the year's first major.
Li, whose best finish in 2020 is a share of 18th place at the European Tour's Oman Open in February, carded a five-under-par 65 in calm winds to reach eight under for the week, two shots clear of six players including two-time defending champion Brooks Koepka (68).
"I didn't even think I could play like this week," said Li, who missed the cut at the Memorial Tour-nament in July and finished in a share of 75th place at last week's World Golf Championships event in Memphis.
Li, in search of a maiden PGA Tour win, made a fast start to his second round with birdies at three of his first five holes, including a 22-footer at the par-four second, and then added another pair at the ninth and 10th holes.
Koepka was bothered by tightness in his hip that required attention from a trainer but birdied the dif-ficult par-four 18th to finish with a 68 to sit six-under through 36 holes.
Overnight co-leader Jason Day (69) was tied with Li before disaster struck on the par-4 12th when the Australian's tee-shot found the rough and he missed a putt for a double bogey.
