Birla Public School will reopen today after a brief recess.

Even though classes from 1 to 10 will reopen today in Abu Hamour, Kindergarten (KG) 1 in the Nuaija Campus, KG 2 and class XI will begin only on April 10.

In the wake of this teachers had a rigorous training on differentiated instruction, followed by orientation section-wise and department –wise. They also had a three day ‘heartful-ness meditation’ workshop. They also had wise sessions on ‘team building’ ‘creating a personal vision statement for life’, stress manage-ment, ‘banking –time’ “It is important that you work as a team. As a team you can achieve greater things which individual persons might fail to achieve’ Michelle Motha, Student Counsellor, the resource person at these sessions, told the teachers.

Teachers in their workshop got to learn to be children again and she taught them ways to de- stress in the midst of life through laughter’.

Kindergarten teachers were introduced to a technique called

‘Banking Time’, which is used to help teachers to deal with children having behavioural issues in the classroom. The importance of hav-ing a personal and professional vision statement was discussed along with an introspection activ-ity to help teacher develop their own personal vision statement.

The ‘heartfulness meditation’ session for three days was resourced by Padmini Sundar. R Sundar, Hemachandran and Bhaskara Rao, were present at the workshop.

Teachers learnt to discover how

to feel the lightness and joy of our true nature and to experience it in our hearts. “When we listen to the heart and capture the inspiration that comes from within, we can master our life,” said the resource people.

A 6-day workshop on ‘Differ-entiating Instruction’ was conducted from March 18 to 23. Teachers participated very actively in the workshop conducted by Ajit Moorkoth, Assistant Professor of Special Education from India. The workshop was organized by the Compassionate Alliance, Doha.

Teachers received certificates on completion of Differentiating Instruction workshop.

The workshop used differenti-ation procedures so that participating teachers received first-hand experience in differen-tiated instruction for all their students in classroom. The work-shop engaged teachers in practical work on differentiated lesson con-tent, teaching strategies, and demonstration of learning out-comes in all children.

Teachers discussed the princi-ples of Universal Designs for Learning and creation of brain-compatible classrooms, finally rearranging a classroom based on these principles. Teachers were also introduced to co-operative learning structures, techniques for actively engaging students, and revised Howard Gardner’s theory of ‘Multiple Intelligence’

Kindergarten teachers and grade 1 and 2 teachers received training on implementing ‘jollyphonics’, a reading and spelling program, at the Kids Valley campus. Freda Baksh was the resource person.

COVER STORY SUNDAY 2 APRIL 201704

Fazeena Saleem The Peninsula

Raising a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can be complex and chal-

lenging for parents and caregivers as they have to face many issues on a day to day basis.

Each child with autism is a unique individual, with unique needs and abilities and many par-ents find themselves in a constant flux of wondering and worrying about how to cope and best help their child.

Sidra Medical and Research Center’s (Sidra) approach to car-ing for children with ASD is to provide care for the whole family. The concept ties in closely with Sidra’s overall goal to provide patient and family centred care across all facets of health delivery.

At Sidra, the Division of Devel-opmental Pediatrics (DDP) and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry clinics currently provide multiple services for children and young people with ASD. This includes comprehensive diagnostic assessments and

treatment recommendations. The clinics also provide evaluation serv-ices for children with comorbid emotional and psychiatric issues.

Dr Fatima Janjua, Division Chief for the DDP, explained that, children referred with suspected ASD participate in a multidiscipli-nary assessment, on the same day, by a team of doctors, a psycholo-gist, therapists and nurses. This approach allows for a more accu-rate and immediate diagnosis, which in turn leads to earlier intervention.

“Children with suspected ASD are referred to us from a range of sources. On Sundays, we have two hours of assessments for these children. When I start seeing the children and family in one room with one of the therapists, others in another room will be observ-ing through a video link. At some point we swap, so at the end we not only have a medical assess-ment but also a multidisciplinary assessment. The information is then produced into a joint report,” Dr Janjua told The Peninsula.

Dr Janjua, also a founding member of the National Autism

Strategy Workgroup and co-writer of the Qatar National Autism Plan said, “We are cur-rently finalising the Qatar National Plan and the final doc-ument is the result of an extraordinary multidisciplinary and multiagency effort which involved both statutory and vol-untary agencies including the Qatar Autism Families Associa-tion. As a professional recently arrived in Qatar, it was very grat-ifying to work with so many experienced and knowledgeable colleagues from different institu-tions, all fully committed to establish modern, evidence based, comprehensive and family cen-tred Autism services in Qatar.”

“In autism like many other con-ditions, early intervention is the key for the best outcome. By help-ing parents to understand how the child functions, and why they behave in a particular way, we are teaching parents how to approach the child in the right way. This can prevent many unavoidable chal-lenges for both the parent and the child.. If the child is happy and relaxed it can help them gain

self-care, social, and communica-tion skills” she added.

Sidra through its services advocates community based approach involving parents and families.

Dr Ahsan Nazeer, Division Chief of Child and Adolescent Psy-chiatry from Sidra (CAMHS) said,

“Family is an integral part of the care and significant effort goes into educating them during ses-sions at our clinic. With the right support to the families – they in turn can help their child to learn, grow and thrive. Each family receives a detailed report of ini-tial evaluation about the child. The report provides a valuable record of the current functioning, diag-nosis of the child and possible treatment recommendations. Families can share this report with schools and different community organizations to receive appropri-ate services for their child.”

In addition to accepting refer-rals from Hamad Medical Corporation and Primary Health Care Corporation - the Sidra DDP and CAMHS clinics also accept referrals from schools.

Focus on the positive - Praise your child for the good behaviour - like every other child they will respond well to positive rein-forcement. Understand Autism - One of the most important factor in the child’s progress is parents’/caregivers’ acceptance and

participation in the intervention program. In children with ASD, your understanding of the underlying reasons for your child’s behaviors will help you to be actively involved in managing them on a daily basis. Fam-ily involvement increases the amount of intervention time delivered to the child in a natural environment and has a positive impact on devel-opmental outcomes.

Schedules are important - Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder feel safe and secure when they know what to expect each day. Having a daily schedule will help them to have a sense of structure as they will know what they will be doing each day. - it will also make your life easier.

Build a support network - Make a list of the people (family mem-bers, neighbors, relatives, other families who have children with autism, teachers etc.) who can help you and pick up that phone call. Other par-ents will be the best resource for understanding what causes challenging behaviors and how to deal with them. They will also provide you with a friendly space and understanding ear and will help you remember that you are not alone.

Avoid burnout by taking care of yourself - Like in all new circum-stances, allow yourself time to get used to your child’s challenging behaviors and try to focus at one thing at the time. Be on the lookout for sign of burnout that usually include; fatigue, irritability, changes in sleep pattern, avoiding friends, feeling of helplessness, crying and feelings of hopelessness. If you feel that you are suffering from burnout, seek help; call you doctor, talk to your family members and ask for help, eat healthy diet, exercise and go out with your friends to some relaxing activities. Ask, ask, ask!

Sidra’s tips for parents

have may help the person in question to go and seek help,” say the health promoters.

For one day only – patients coming to Sidra today ( April 2) can seek more information about ASD including the sensory problems in touch, smell, hearing, taste and sight among autistic children. Story telling sessions in Arabic and English, awareness videos and posters will be also feature at the Sidra outpatient clinic on the day.

“Accepting ASD referrals from schools is unique to Qatar. We are working closely with different schools to provide education, guidance and to help them with children who are in need of eval-uation and treatment interventions. Our recommendation and approach for the teachers is to use the SPELL framework which recognizes strengths of the child and emphasizes that interven-tions should be based on - structure, positive approaches, empathy, low arousal and links (between child’s life and various components of the program),” said Dr Nazeer.

Sidra is currently part of a National Autism Working Group – which is under the auspices of the Ministry of Public Health. The group includes a dedicated consortium of various ministries, the public and private sector, hospitals and most importantly parents and care givers who are part of the Qatar Autism Families Associ-ation. The group is working closely to finalize a Qatar National Autism Plan. The plan is based on six pillars - Awareness; Early Recognition and Screening; Diagnosis and Assessment; Interven-tions; Education and Transition into Adolescence, Adulthood and Elderhood.

Dr Muhammed Waqar Azeem, Chair of the Department of Psy-chiatry at Sidra, who is also Chair of the National Autism Working Group and Co-Chair of the WISH Autism Forum said, “The govern-ment in Qatar’s commitment to supporting families of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder is admirable. As a community and as a nation – our focus for caring for individuals with ASD should be to help them become an integral part of society and to feel safe and respected. I am confident that the national autism plan that is being developed in Qatar will have a major impact in improving the lives of individuals with autism and their families and that even-tually, it can be a model for other GCC countries.”

Autism is a neurodevelopment disorder. It is a lifelong devel-opmental disability that affects how people perceive the world and interact with others. Autistic people see, hear and feel the world differently to other people. All autistic people share certain diffi-culties, but being autistic will affect them in different ways.

Dr Nahed Alateeqi, Senior Attending Physician, Division of Devel-opmental Pediatrics at Sidra said, “We always advice parents, if you see or sense something is not quite right with your child please seek medical advice early. There is no harm in getting reassurance that the child has no major problems. And if there is a problem, the earlier we know and understand the issue and get the right inter-vention – the better the outcomes. Once a diagnosis has been made, it is understandable that some parents will be shocked and stressed. Our recommendation is to take your time to accept it but then learn about the services available not just for the child but for the fam-ily as well. Parents and caregivers need just as much support and education about the condition to take care of the individual.”

Besides the clinical healthcare servicesat Sidra, a team of health promoters including Najla Ahmed Bawazir, Noof Al Taweel and Fatima Al Mohanadi will also be playing a big role in helping fam-ilies identify and manage children with autism.

Today as part of World Autism Awareness day they will edu-cate visitors to Sidra about the importance of identifying autism at early age.

“People might question why they should learn about autism – particularly if no one in their immediate family has the disorder. However, by educating yourself, you will be helping someone else

– whether another family member, a friend or a colleague -who may have an autistic child. Whatever awareness or knowledge you

Students from Doha College are celebrating the ‘double win’ at the Qatar Foundation

GMC Triathlon Series.Teams from the primary and

secondary elements of Doha Col-lege were crowned champions following the completion of the event at Education City. The col-lege’s secondary team also finished first in the secondary school team relay category

The triathlon was organised by Qatar Foundation in association with Z Adventures and TriClub Doha. The event’s primary

sponsor and Qatar’s exclusive GMC dealer Mannai Auto Group pro-vided trophies for the winning teams, finishers’ shirts and med-als for each participant of the event which took place on February 24.

Now in its second year, the tri-athlon featured two new categories: school and corporate relays.

The Corporate Triathlon Championship saw teams of three racing as individuals or as a Team Relay, against teams from other companies and organizations, over the course of 500m swim, 20km

bike and 5km run. Teams from Mannai, Doha Bank, Aspetar, Qatar Airways and Doha College also took part.

Another new category was the school triathlon championship, with prizes for the best primary school, secondary school and university.

Students entered as a team relay or as individuals in teams of three or more. Race distances ranged from 100m swim, 3km bike and 1.25km run for children aged 7-9 years old to longer 200m swim, 10km bike and 2.5km run

for older children. Students aged 16 and above completed the adult course.

Ewan Cameron, race director and representative of Mannai Cor-poration, commented: “The response to the GMC Triathlon Series and the new race catego-ries was fantastic from schools through to corporate teams. It brought newcomers to the sport and I hope that it encourages them to get more engaged in the future and improve their fitness. All the participants went away with a tre-mendous sense of achievement.”

Parents who regularly play “Pokemon GO” with their children report a number of

side benefits including increased exercise, more time spent outdoors and opportunities for family bond-ing, says a study.

Pokemon GO is a location-based augmented reality game in which players capture fictional creatures from the Japanese Poke-mon franchise on smartphones and other mobile devices by “find-ing” them in real-world locations.

“Location-based augmented

reality games are pretty different than sitting in front of a TV or play-ing a typical video game, so we were interested in the way kids and their parents were sharing those experiences together,” said lead author Kiley Sobel from Uni-versity of Washington. “People still don’t really know how to build tech that works well for families, so when this game came out of the blue and really caught on, we wanted to look at what its ingre-dients for success were,” Sobel said.

The results, taken from a qual-itative survey of 67 parents and interviews with 20 additional par-ents playing “Pokémon GO” with their families in the US, are detailed in a paper to be presented at the Association for Computing Machinery’s CHI 2017 conference to be held at Denver, Colorado in May.

Some parents said the interac-tive and mobile nature of the game made them feel better about engaging in that type of gameplay,

as opposed to more sedentary forms of “screen time”, according to the study. The study did not include perspectives of parents who do not allow their children to play Pokemon GO.

Many parents -- particularly moms of boys, fathers of girls and parents of teenaged children -- reported spending more quality time with their children as a result of playing “Pokémon GO” together and talking more than usual, both about the game itself and about other things in their lives, the researchers said.

Parents also appreciated how the game motivated both them and their children to go outside and exercise in ways that were con-venient and fit into their lives, as their children displayed newfound enthusiasm for walking the dog or walking rather than driving to din-ner or playgrounds. For some participants, these “Poké-walks” led to walking thousands more steps per day, the study said.

A 10-year-old red Ferrari that was set to go on auc-tion in Florida yesterday

is attracting an unusual amount of attention thanks to a previous owner: President Donald Trump.

Car lovers, conservative supporters and curiosity seek-ers admired the 2007 F430 coupe at a convention center in Fort Lauderdale 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Miami, where a collection of exotic autos filled the lot of the auction house Auctions America, which specializes in classic and sports cars.

The Ferrari is expected to raise between $250,000 and $350,000, the auction house said.

“It’s exciting,” visitor Russell DiPerna said. “President Don-ald Trump is obviously a world

leader now.” The real-estate bil-lionaire bought the Ferrari new for use as his personal car and owned it for just over four years.

He drove the car 2,400 miles. The rest of its mileage -- 6,000 miles -- was clocked by its sec-ond and current owner, who bought the Ferrari in 2011 and remains anonymous.

“It’s highly likely Donald Trump is the only United States president to ever own a super-car,” the auction house said in a statement.

“There is a big expectation of value for this car,” Auctions America specialist Barney Ruprecht said. “The fact that President Trump owned the car certainly adds significance in terms of ownership history.” “In terms of value, we’ll find out tomorrow.”

If the French croque monsieur and the American grilled cheese had a child, it would be

the Monte Cristo: a sandwich filled with cheese and sliced meat, bat-tered and often deep-fried. (It is American, after all.) The retro dish pops up now and then at diners, taverns and such chains as the Cheesecake Factory and Benni-gan’s, where in March it was possible to win its “World Famous Monte Cristos” for a year.

According to the Oxford

Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America, the sandwich was first mentioned in 1923, in an Ameri-can restaurant industry publication. While its origin story and the source of the name are unknown, historians generally agree that the dish comes from California. Despite its murky beginnings, the hefty sandwich continues to be popular, especially for brunch.

1. Bread: According to a recipe in the 1949 “Brown Derby Cook-book,” three slices of white bread are to be used to make a double-decker sandwich. We’ve found it’s more common to use two slices

and a single layer of filling. As for breads, take your pick, but some popular choices are: sourdough, soft white bread and whole grain.

2. Batter: You’re likely to find the sandwich battered and deep-fried. Some versions are more like French toast, with challah coated in an egg batter and grid-dled. Some are layers of French toast.

3. Cheese: Swiss cheese is tra-ditional, though cheddar, Monterey Jack and Gruyere are sometimes used. Recipes can get creative fill-ings such bechamel and whole-grain mustard or whole-grain mustard sauce, tomatoes and

caramelised onions.4. Meat: As with a croque mon-

sieur, the meat of choice is sliced meat. Turkey is often added. (Swap in tongue as the meat - we assume beef tongue, but it’s not specified

- and you’ve got a Monte Carlo, writes Helen Brown in her 1991

“West Coast Cook Book.”)5. Sweet: Strawberry or rasp-

berry jam is a typical accompaniment, for dipping. The Airedale serves its sandwich with a side of grape jelly, while the Diner keeps it in the realm of French toast with breakfast syrup. A dusting of confectioner’s sugar is another frequent addition.

Individuals who find it hard to fall asleep must wake up to the health problems that poor sleep

poses. Researchers have found that suffering from insomnia may put people at increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

Women with insomnia symp-toms may have a slightly higher risk of cardiovascular and stroke events than men, according to the study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.

“Sleep is important for biologi-cal recovery and takes around a third of our lifetime, but in modern society more and more people com-plain of insomnia,” said the study’s first author Qiao He from China Medical University in Shenyang, China. “Researchers have found associations between insomnia and poor health outcomes. But the links between insomnia and heart

disease or stroke have been incon-sistent,” she said.

To find out, the authors ana-lysed 15 prospective cohort studies with a total of 160, 867 participants. The current analysis assessed the association between insomnia symptoms and incidence of death from cardiovascular disease (acute myocardial infarction, coronary heart disease, heart failure), stroke, or a combination of events.

Insomnia symptoms included difficulty initiating sleep, difficulty maintaining sleep, early-morning awakening, and non-restorative sleep. “We found that difficulty ini-tiating sleep, difficulty maintaining sleep, or non-restorative sleep were associated with 27 per cent, 11 per cent, and 18 per cent higher risks of cardiovascular and stroke events, respectively,” He said.

The underlying mechanisms for these links are not completely understood, she added.

“Previous studies have shown that insomnia may change metab-olism and endocrine function, increase sympathetic activation, raise blood pressure, and elevate

levels of proinflammatory and inflammatory cytokines - all of which are risk factors for cardio-vascular disease and stroke,” she explained.

Don’t overlook or underrate the power of peanuts as a nutty super food, say experts.

Nutritionist and weight management con-sultant Kavita Devgan, author of “Don’t Diet! 50 Habits of Thin People”, says ‘good’ fats are essential for good health.

Devgan said: “Nut butters, particularly pea-nut butter, is a source of unsaturated fats, which are proven to be good for our heart and gen-eral health. Plus, it is a good source of fibre and protein too. And both provide satiety, so keep you full for longer.”

“It also delivers the antioxidant vitamin E, magnesium and some hard to find zinc. Of course moderation is the key as it tends to be steep in calories and sodium.”

But beware. “Look for peanut butter that is low on

sodium and added sugars, and stick to two tablespoon per day,” Devgan said, suggesting that it’s best consumed with crackers, or paired with a fruit like apple or maybe baby carrots.

“When added to a sandwich, it provides the much needed protein and good fats, along with the carbs of the bread making the meal

complete.” Peanuts alone are packed with monoun-

saturated fatty acids (MUFA) that help lower the bad cholesterol and increase good choles-terol level in the blood. It is also rich in Vitamins E and Biotin, which are known to be great for hair and skin health, says Oliver Mirza, Man-aging Director and CEO, Dr. Oetker India Pvt Ltd.

A nutritionist by qualification, he recom-mends regular consumption of peanuts or peanut butter that has over 90 per cent pea-nut content. Just two tablespoons a day give you nutrition with taste, Mirza says, sharing some facts about health benefits of peanuts:

* It is a protein power bank: Peanuts are a rich source of good protein. 30 gm of peanuts give you around 8 gm of protein which is more than any other food. It also has fibre, healthy fats, antioxidants, potassium, magnesium and a lot more that provides you with energy.

* It has healthy fat: Your body needs a good supply of healthy fats to stay fit. The fat in pea-nuts is heart-healthy monounsaturated. Therefore, like many other superfoods, pea-nuts are friendly fat food.

* The anti-oxidants abundance: Peanuts also deliver oleic acid. It helps you cut cholesterol in the body, fight free radicals and inflamma-tion. It is great for skin too.

* It is heart friendly: Raw peanuts are a good source of monounsaturated fats. According to a scientific study at Purdue University in the US, consumption of peanuts reduces cardio-vascular disease risk factors. The Adventist Health Study on peanuts also found that it is likely to reduce the risk of heart diseases.

* True brain food: Peanuts are high in Niacin, Resveratrol and Vitamin E, which are influen-tial in protecting against Alzheimer and age-related cognitive decline.

Hindi film “Mukti Bhawan”, which has been screened in various international film

festivals and received appreciation from the audience, will be released in theatres in the the Middle East, producer Sanjay Bhutiani said.

“After receiving huge appreciation from various film festivals in different countries we are planning for a theatrical release of ‘Mukti Bhawan’ internationally. So far, it is confirmed that the film will be released in Middle Eastern countries. “We are also in talk with other countries like Korea, some of the European and south east-Asian countries. We will confirm the release date within coming three weeks,” he told the media here.

The film, directed by Shubhashish Bhutiani and featuring Adil Husain and Lalit Behl, revolves around an interesting relationship

between a father and son after the former decides to die in the Hindu holy city of Varanasi and his son forced to join his journey.

Since the film is in Hindi, Bhutiani, asked about if the exhibitors are planning to dub the film in local language, said: “This is

their call but so far they are planning to subtitle the film in their respective local language.”

The film has already premiered in Venice Film Festival, won the UNESCO award for peace and human rights and screened in Dubai International Film Festival

among others. As the film is releasing in India on April 7, Bhutiani said they were mainly focusing on multiplexes “as they are our primary audience” but also releasing the film in cities like Nagpur, Jodhpur, Indore, Lucknow, Chandigarh along with metro cities.

Filmmaker SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus “Baahubali” now has a book series, and

if all goes well, the trilogy will be adapted to small screen.

“The plan is to make the book into a TV series... not the daily soaps that you get to see. The plan is to make a seasonal show with 10 to 13 episodes,” Rajamouli told reporters at the launch of “The Rise of Sivagami”, a prequel to the blockbuster

“Baahubali”.Anand Neelakantan, who

has penned “The Rise of Sivag-ami”, is known for writing fiction books based on the Indian epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata. What about mak-ing a film on one of the books?

“His character of Ravana is fantastic. It is very inspirational. But I don’t know if I will make a film on it. Apart from the books, he told me one story

which is yet to be put on paper. Very intriguing and interesting story. I was quite fascinated by it. So maybe. I want to make it, but let’s see,” the director replied to a question.

What’s the subject of that “intriguing story”? “I can’t reveal that now,” he said.

There were multiple reports on him helming “Garuda” or a film based on Mahabharata. So, what’s his next project?

“I am planning a nice family entertainer called holiday in Bhutan,” he said.

Actor Ram Charan said yes-terday that he is going to start shooting for his next

yet-untitled Telugu project with director Sukumar.

“Landed in Rajahmundry! All set to roll my next with Sukumar,” Ram Charan wrote on his Face-book page. After playing a suave khaki-clad hero in last year’s Telugu actioner “Dhruva”, Ram Charan will be seen in a fully rural avatar in this 1980s-set period love drama.

“He is set to undergo a com-plete rural makeover for this project. Audiences are going to see a new Ram Charan, and they’re going to love his look. It’s a period love story,” a source from the film’s unit said. To be produced by Mythri Movie Mak-ers, the regular shooting of the project is expected to start soon. Samantha Ruth Prabhu has been

finalised as the leading lady and this will be her first-time collab-oration with Ram Charan. Jagapathi Babu has been con-firmed to play a pivotal role

-- most likely that of the antagonist.

Devi Sri Prasad will compose the tunes, while Rathnavelu will crank the camera for the project.

Actress Amber Heard has sued producer Christopher Hanley for unauthorised usage of her scenes in “London Fields”.

She filed a countersuit against Hanley after she was sued for $10m for breaching contract because she allegedly failed to “perform certain acting services”, reports people.com.

According to the countersuit documents that Heard filed on Thursday, she accused Hanley of breaking her ethical clause by secretly using a body double to film “an explicit scene”.

She has claimed that Hanley and production company Nicola Six Limited did this to deliber-ately mislead audiences into believing she had filmed the scene.

The scenes allegedly involved a female police officer and a female detainee on the hood of a car and a police baton.

“This case shines a spotlight on the dark

underbelly of Hollywood. Amber Heard is the latest victim,” Heard’s lawyer said in the documents.

The cross-complaint documents also claimed the actress “insisted on specific restrictions about scenes in the film as a condition to agreeing to appear”. In a statement, the plaintiff’s attorney Mathew Rosengart called Heard’s cross-com-plaint a “work of fiction”. “It is nothing more than a meritless smear tactic designed to dis-tract from her own misconduct,” Rosengart said, people.com reported.

Based on Martin Amis’s 1989 novel “London Fields” is a noirish dark thriller that focuses on Heard’s character -- Nicola Six -- who has a pre-monition of her impending murder. She begins a tangled love affair with three men, one of whom she knows will kill her.

Directed by Mathew Cullen, the film also stars Billy Bob Thornton, Jim Sturgess, Theo James and Cara Delevingne among others.

Actress Nicole Kidman, who last appeared

in a superhero film in “Batman Forever” (1995), says she came on board for “Aqua-man” for fun.

Since “Batman Forever”, Kidman worked in critically acclaimed and con-tent driven films like

“Lion”, “Moulin Rouge”, “Eyes Wide Shut”, “The Hours” and “Australia”. In “Aquaman”, Kidman will essay actor Jason Momoa’s mother Queen Atlanna.

“The reason why I love ‘Aquaman’ is James Wan (director) is an Australian, and I’ve followed his career since he started. He’s a really good friend of mine, and he offered to let me play Queen Atlanna,” Kid-man told ew.com. “As soon as he said I could wear mother-of-pearl and be a mermaid warrior, I said I’m done. Please. If there is one thing I have to do in my life, I have to be that. Because, you’ve got to have some fun,” Kidman added. The 49-year-old will next be seen in “The Lobster”, “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” and “The Beguiled”. The movies are slated to be released prior to “Aquaman”. “Aquaman” will release next year in December.

‘Aquaman’ for fun Dominican-American former pro-fessional baseball player Alex Rodriguez has confirmed his rela-

tionship with singer-actress Jennifer Lopez.

“It’s obvious. We’re having a great time, she’s an amazing, amazing girl, and one of the smartest human beings I’ve ever met and also an incredible mother,” Rod-riguez said on talk show “The View” on Friday, reports people.com.

Since the news of the couple dating broke earlier in March, the pair has been spotted together several times. Asked to divulge any secrets about Lopez, 47, that people would find surprising, Rodriguez, 41, said: “She just likes simple things. I mean, she’s a very, very simple person. Loves family. Is a great sister. Is a great daughter.” Lopez has two children with former husband Marc Anthony -- twins Emme and Maximilian, 9.

Reality TV personality Khloe Kardashian is worried about living

in the shadow of her busi-ness savvy half-sister Kylie Jenner.

She is seen stressing out about the launch of her Good American denim line in a new clip from “Keep-ing Up With The Kardashians”, reports mir-ror.co.uk. Khloe vents to her sister Kourtney Kardashian about the anxiety she is feeling about selling enough of her latest product and

making her investors and business partner happy.

Then speaking to the camera, she says she was once known as the “fat sis-ter” and doesn’t want to go on to be known as the “fail-ing sister”. Khloe tells Kourtney: “I woke up at 4.30am for press. Last night, I didn’t go to bed until 3.45am.”

When Kourtney asks why, she said: “Ever since Emma (her business asso-ciate) told me we need to sell X amount of units, I

have so much anxiety.”Kourtney reassures her

that she will sell that many units, but Khloe says it’s

“never happened in denim history”.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has launched a start-up which aims to connect our

brains to computers to help people keep up with machines, media reported. The existence of the com-pany was reported by Wall Street Journal and Musk later confirmed it in a tweet.

The company, registered as a “medical research” firm, will develop so-called “neural lace” technology which would implant tiny electrodes into the brain, BBC reported on Tuesday.

The technique could be used to improve memory or give humans added artificial intelligence. More details about the firm would be made public next week via Wait-ButWhy -- a site known for illustrating its lengthy post with stick figure drawings. “Long Neu-ralink piece coming out on @waitbutwhy in about a week. Dif-ficult to dedicate the time, but existential risk is too high not to.”

Instead of focussing on upgrad-ing ordinary human brainpower at first, Neuralink will explore how brain interfaces might alleviate the symptoms of dangerous and

chronic medical conditions includ-ing epilepsy and severe depressive

disorder, tech website Techcrunch.com reported.

US-based advanced tech-nology company iRobot has announced an

update to the iRobot Home App that will let its Roomba robot provide visual post-cleaning maps that display information about its performance.

The new Clean Map reports now include informa-tion such as the dirtiest floor areas and total space cleaned. Its integration of Amazon Alexa voice activated control will make communicating with a Roomba vacuuming robot even easier.

“iRobot is aggressively pur-suing opportunities within the connected home to improve our customers’ experience with our cleaning robots,” Colin Angle, chairman and CEO of iRobot, said in a statement.

“The latest updates for the iRobot HOME App make clean-ing with an iRobot Roomba vacuuming robot even more user friendly, with voice-acti-vated commands, enhanced mapping features and useful post-cleaning reports,” Angle added. After Facebook-owned Instagram and WhatsApp got a Snapchat-like “Stories” update, users yesterday got access to the

new Facebook Camera feature that lets them add effects to their photos and videos. They can now share this content to a Snapchat clone called ‘Facebook Stories’ that appears above News Feed on mobile and works similar to Insta-gram’s 24-hour slideshows. Users can also share these posts to News Feed of individual friends through the new ‘Facebook Direct’ private vis-ual messages that disappear after some time.

“As people mostly post photos and videos, ‘Stories’ is the way they’re going to want to do it. Obviously we’ve seen this doing very well in other apps. Snapchat has really pio-neered this,” technology website Tech Crunch quoted Facebook Camera product manager Connor Hayes as saying.

He said Facebook was shifting away from text status updates after 10 years as its pri-mary sharing option. According to Hayes, the rapid ascent of Instagram Stories to 150 mil-lion daily users inspired the Menlo Park social media giant to start testing its own Stories in January, and keep expanding it to 12 coun-tries before rollout. “We’ve tested in markets with Instagram Stories and Messenger Day, and we’ve seen this as accretive. They end up posting more and they like using the ‘Sto-ries’ format across apps,” Hayes added.

WhatsApp recently received thumbs down when it changed from a text-based to a stories-based status update.
