TODAY’S GOSPEL: Matthew 24:30-36

"Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory; and he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. "From the fig tree learn its les-son: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away till all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only."

THE HOLY CROSS OF VARAK: A UNIQUE ARMENIAN FEAST OF THE CROSS OF CHRIST

Today is the Feast of the Holy Cross of Varak, celebrated only by the Armenian Church on the Sunday nearest to September 28th, two weeks after the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. It is one of the five feasts of the Cross observed in the Armenian Church, and it has both an historical and spiritual significance from the 7th century until this day. Where is Varak? The Monastery of St. Nishan was built on Mount Varak, which is in the southeastern region of Van, in historic Armenia. In the late 19th century, the Monastery became prominent when Khrimian Hayrik established a printing house and school there, hoping to make the monastery an educational center. The massacres and deporta-tions of 1915 destroyed those plans. In the 3rd century, the nun, St. Hripsime, buried on Mount Varak a piece of the cross up-on which Christ was crucified as a way of protecting it from the soldiers of Emperor Maximian, who were pursuing her. The fragment of the Cross remained buried there for nearly 400 years. In 653, a monk named Todik had a dream and a vision of a church on Mount Varak with 12 pillars in the center of which was a radiant cross. In his vision, the cross came to rest over the altar of the monastery of Varak, where Todik and his student Hovel [Joel] dis-covered the cross’s relic. When told the news by the monk, Catholicos Nersess V (the builder/ Sheenogh) came to Varak, verified the relic's authenticity, and established a feast in honor of the discovery. The Catholicos also wrote the beautiful hymn, “By the Sign of Your All- Powerful Holy Cross,” (Nshanav Amenahaght Khatchit). The message of the Cross of Varak is compelling. Christ reveals himself to all those who seek Him. At Varak Monastary, Todik and Hovel were in pursuit of the Lord’s Cross. Knowing what is in the minds and the hearts of mankind, the Lord indeed will reveal Himself to those who seek Him. Christ is always close to us, and it is the profound desire in the human heart that awakens His presence in a myriad of ways, through dreams, vi-sions, people and events. His Cross was buried, and the desire of two men revealed it by pursuing it to the end and then being blessed by it. How true this is for us today. Jesus says, there is nothing hidden that will eventually not be revealed. Ask and seek, knock and it will be opened to you, pursue your dreams to the end. Armenia, the Land of No-ah’s Ark Festival that we celebrated this week is a testament to a man who had a vision by God, to build an Ark that landed on the mount of Ararat after a flood of 150 days. In the end a dove and a rainbow issued forth salvation. At Varak, the Cross and its discov-ery gave generations of our people hope of salvation, as Christ and His Cross still do to-day.

NOTICE OF FIRE EMERGENCY EVACUATION PLAN

FOR ST. JOHN’S CHURCH AND CHURCH SCHOOL

The Parish Council has undertaken the development of a FIRE EMERGENCY AND EVACUATION PLAN for St. John’s Armenian Church and Church School. This will be the first step in a plan that will encompass several different types of emergencies (i.e. fire, tornado, lock-down). This fall, we will begin by teaching Church School students, teachers, ushers, choir and Parish Council members the procedures for safe evacua-tion of the church complex in the event of a fire emergency. We plan on having two “fire drills” involving the entire church and Church School on October 27th and No-vember 3rd. This will take place at the end of the church service. Please make eve-ry effort to attend church and have your children in Church School so you can partici-pate in this very important drill. The following are guidelines for parishioners in case of a fire emergency: In the Sanctuary - Parish Council members, ushers and choir members will be “leaders” trained to guide people safely out of the sanctuary to the big St. John sign and grassy area at the SE corner of the church during a fire emergency. In the Church School—Teachers and Church School staff will guide students safely out of the building to the grassy area behind the church during a fire emergency. Other “leaders” will canvas the building to make sure all are safely out of the build-ing. Once it is determined that all is safe, an “ALL CLEAR” notice will be given by the pastor and everyone must return to the building to pick up their children and contin-ue the rest of the day as usual. Thank you for your participation and cooperation during these very important drills.

MUSIC MINISTRY IN OUR PARISH

The Komitas Choir throughout the year is busy with many activities aside from re-hearsals for Holy Badarak. Also coming up this fall: A new CD of Armenian Sacred Songs recorded by the Komitas Choir is soon to

be released. Watch for details. November 10, 2013, Sunday –The Detroit Symphony Orchestra once again re-

turns to St. John’s Sanctuary for another magnificent concert. Watch for de-tails. This is sponsored by the newly organized St. John Music Guild.
