Shaw's homer lone bright spot in River Cats loss
Rough night for top prospects Beede and Arroyo in 8-1 defeat by Fresno
The Sacramento River Cats (32-48) got a lift from Chris Shaw against the Fresno Grizzlies (44-
38) but couldn't get much else going as they fell 8-1 Saturday night at Raley Field.
Shaw shouldered the offensive load for the River Cats, homering in the fourth inning for the
team's only run. The 405-foot blast not only broke up Fresno starter Dean Deetz's shutout, but
it also ended his no-hit bid. In his last 10 games, Shaw is hitting .421 (16-for-38) with four home
runs, three doubles, and 10 RBI. Activated off the disabled list today, shortstop Christian
Arroyo made his first start with Sacramento since June 14 but was forced to exit in the fifth
after being hit by a pitch in the left hand.
Starter Tyler Beede toiled to get through 3.2 innings tonight as the right-hander threw 90
pitches (48 strikes) with a career-high six walks. He gave up five runs (four earned) before being
relieved by the newest River Cats' bullpen arm, Collin Balester. Tyler Rogers highlighted the
relievers tonight with two scoreless innings, surrendering just one hit. Rogers' 33 appearances
are second most in the PCL and he will represent Sacramento at this year's Triple-A All-Star
game in Tacoma.
The River Cats are expected to activate left-hander Matt Gage (0-0. 0.00) tomorrow for his first
career Triple-A start. The Grizzlies will counter with right-hander David Martinez (4-7, 4.62).
First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. (PT) and the game can be heard live on the air on ESPN 1320 and
online at rivercats.com.

Big Inning Sinks Giants In 8-2 Loss
Modesto evens series with San Jose
MODESTO, CA - The Modesto Nuts used a five-run bottom of the fifth to take control of the
game on Saturday night en route to an 8-2 victory over the Giants at John Thurman Field. The
loss evened the series at a game apiece and was only San Jose's (35-45 overall, 5-5 second half)
second defeat in their last seven contests overall.
Jonah Arenado (2-for-4, 2B) and John Polonius (2-for-4, RBI) had two hits apiece to lead the
Giants offensively in the loss.
Modesto starter Nick Neidert (7-3) earned the win after limiting San Jose to a pair of runs over
the first six innings. Neidert, who entered the game ranked in the top five in the California
League in wins, ERA and strikeouts, surrendered five hits, walked two and struck out three
during his outing.
The game was scoreless through 3 1/2 innings as Neidert and Giants starter Mike
Connolly dueled on the mound. San Jose did threaten in the top of the third as Matt Pare drew
a leadoff walk before Ronnie Jebavy doubled with two outs to put runners on second and
third. Ryan Howard though lined out to first to end the inning.
Meanwhile, Connolly began his start with three scoreless frames pitching around four singles to
keep the contest at 0-0. The Nuts though would breakthrough with a run against Connolly in
the bottom of the fourth. After Connolly set down the first two batters of the inning, Rayder
Ascanio drew a walk. Jordan Cowan then stepped to the plate and laced a double into the left
center field gap that scored Ascanio all the way from first with the first run of the night.
The Giants would answer in the top of the fifth with two runs against Neidert to take their first
lead. Arenado led off with a double down the right field line before moving to third on a Pare
groundout. Polonius was up next and he lined a single into right center plating Arenado with
the tying run. The rally continued when Junior Amion doubled down the left field line advancing
Polonius to third before a Jebavy sacrifice fly gave San Jose a 2-1 advantage.
The Giants lead though would be short-lived as Modesto sent eight batters to the plate in a
five-run, five-hit bottom of the fifth. Three straight singles from Kevin Santa, Braden
Bishop and Eric Filia to start the inning loaded the bases with none out. Chris Mariscal then hit
a sacrifice fly to deep right plating Santa with the tying run. Bishop also advanced to third on
the play. Joey Curletta was up next and he hit a slow grounder to third that saw San Jose force
out Filia at second. Curletta though was able to beat out the throw to first which allowed
Bishop to score giving the Nuts a 3-2 lead. The rally then continued with a single from Luis
Liberato before Ascanio crushed a three-run home run to right. The homer, Ascanio's third of
the season, extended the Modesto lead to 6-2.
The Nuts then scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth against reliever Connor
Kaden (3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) to push their advantage to 8-2. Arturo Nieto led off with
a towering solo home run to left center. Santa then singled, took second on a passed ball and
scored Modesto's eighth and final run of the night when Bishop hammered a double to left
center.
The Giants threatened late, but were unable to score against the Nuts bullpen. In the seventh,
Pare and Polonius delivered consecutive singles to start the inning, but the next three batters
were retired. Bryan Reynolds then led off the top of the eighth with a double before a one-out
walk to Dillon Dobson, however both runners were stranded. San Jose was then set down 1-2-3
in the ninth to end the game.
Connolly (4-6) suffered the loss after yielding a season-high tying six runs (all earned) on 10 hits
over five innings. The right-hander walked one and struck out one.
