Stewards Settle Durban July...

Africa's richest race, the G1 Vodacom Durban July, was billed as one of themost exciting sporting events on the South African calendar, but it is likely noone anticipated the drama that was to come as the 55,000 on-track patrons--aswell as viewers across the globe--waited out a near 30 minute inquiry for theresult. In the end, stewards upheld the objection into the stretch run lodged bythe connections of race favorite and star sophomore Legislate (SAf) (Dynasty{SAf}), who passed the post a head second to longshot Wylie Hall (Aus)(Redoute's Choice {Aus}) after a thrilling stretch duel.

Lightly campaigned at three, Mukhadram ended thatyear with a fifth-placing in the prestigiousCambridgeshire H. over nine furlongs at Newmarket inlate September, a race that has played host to so manyfuture stars--such as dual Coral-Eclipse winner Halling--over nine furlongs at Newmarket in late September.Showing how much he had matured over the off-season when returning to annex the G3 BrigadierGerard S. over this track and trip last May, he was rundown late by Al Kazeem (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G1Prince of Wales=s S. at Royal Ascot a month later. While that rival mastered him again close home in thisrace just over a fortnight later, he also cost him secondby hampering him, and it was only in the G2 York S. atthe end of July that the William Haggas projectreturned to the winner=s spot. Recovering from a minorfoot problem to be fifth under unusual hold-up tactics inthe G1 QIPCO Champion S. at Ascot, he was back tohis best, ridden positively from the front, on his nextstart in the Mar. 29 G1 Dubai World Cup. Cut downlate by the Meydan Tapeta specialist African Story (GB)(Pivotal {GB}) there, he was fourth when restrainedonce again in the Prince of Wales=s June 18. Forwardlyplaced this time and largely ignored by his better-fancied rivals, he proved no sitting duck as the marketleaders toiled several lengths adrift in midstretch. Whilethey labored and made up little ground, Mukhadram=shonest approach was sealing the result to justify thefaith of the William Haggas stable. AHe certainlydeserves to win a race of this nature,@ said Haggas.

AIt may have been a funny race, in which the firstthree were prominent throughout, but I don=t care aboutthat. We=ve always had great belief in the horse and atAscot I was disappointed. We came here very relaxedand he looked in really top shape today--reallycomposed and focused, and he moved well to post, which he didn=t do at Ascot. Paul [Hanagan] adores himand he=s a doer--a big strapping horse who sometimeslooks a bit fat. He=s a beautiful-looking horse with agood temperament and I=m thrilled for him.@ Haggasnoted that a step up in trip could be in the cards forMukhadram. AI=ve always wanted to have a go at theG1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. [at AscotJuly 26], as I=ve always thought that if he=s going toimprove a bit it will be over 1 1/2 miles. I=ve got noevidence to back that up, but there is a lot of staminaon the dam=s side, and the quicker horses just seem tooutspeed him, as he=s a resolute galloper.@ The Fugue was placed at the back throughout andnever looked likely to get involved en route to adisappointing sixth-place effort, but jockey WilliamBuick blamed the pre-race rain for the turnaround in herfortunes following her Royal Ascot high. AThe groundhas become loose and she doesn=t like it, simple asthat,@ he told PA Sport. AShe ran well in defeat andshe=ll be back.@ Jim Bolger said of Trading Leather, Athewinner wasn=t stopping, but he was happy where hewas. Mr Speaker, a maiden winner over the Belmont lawnlast October, sprung a 10-1 upset while closing out hisjuvenile campaign in Gulfstream=s Dania Beach Dec. 21.After a failed dirt attempt in the GII Holy Bull S. Jan. 25, Mr Speaker got back on track with a rallyingsecond in the GIII Palm Beach S. in Hallandale Mar. 1.His turf form translated perfectly to Keeneland=s all-weather with a dominating four-length tally in theLexington Apr. 19, and he came in well under the radarhere after a disappointing fifth at 4-5 in theaforementioned Pennine Ridge. With regular rider Jose Lezcano aboard, Mr Speakercaboosed the field in 10th as the rank Pornichet (Fr)(Vespone {Ire}) ran wild through a half-mile in :48.43.Mr Speaker began to creep closer down the backstretchand rallied along the hedge on the turn for home. Hecame flying along the inside as Adelaide struck thefront in the stretch and outkicked his European rival tothe wire to set the tote board ablaze. "I had a concrete reason [to dismiss his last race], butyou always have your doubts,@ McGaughey said. ADoeshe belong in the top layer of horses or not? I thinktoday he proved he does. My confidence was shaken alittle bit; he was a different horse [before the PennineRidge], it was like he had never been in the paddockbefore. He went to the post and was looking up intothe crowd. But today, he was an entirely differenthorse." Mr Speaker=s dam Salute, runner-up in the 2004 GII Demoiselle S., has an unraced 2-year-old colt byWar Front. After slipping in 2013, she produced a coltby Hard Spun earlier this spring.

Xcellence (Fr) (Champs Elysees {GB}), having herfinal run for the legendary Francois Doumen, waspositioned well back off the pace by Gerald Mosse andreigning American Oaks heroine Room Service (MoreThan Ready) caboosed the field through an openinghalf-mile that went in a sedate :50.14. As the fieldreached the far turn, Sea Queen was still playing catchme if you can after six furlongs in 1:14.57, andWonderfully took a crack at her as the quarter poleloomed. Sea Queen had plenty left and easily disposedof that bid, but Rosario was just winding up Minoretteand peeled her off Wonderfully=s heels at the head ofthe lane. Sea Queen kicked hard and initially resistedthe challenge of Minorette, but the latter refused to goaway and drove past in the shadow of the post for avaluable success. Summer Solo enjoyed a good insidejourney and stayed on well for third, while Xcellencedid well to finish fourth off no pace whatsoever. "Shemoves like she wanted to go longer,@ the winning ridercommented. ALast time, I moved a little early to takethe lead and she waited a little bit. This time I wantedto be a little closer because it looked like there wasn't alot of speed. I could see [Sea Queen] on the outsideand wanted to keep an eye on her, and I didn't want tomove early. When she took the lead she just kept ongoing."

Coming Full Circle... Interestingly, Minorette=s dam, the Juddmonte-bredSilk and Scarlet (GB) (Sadler=s Wells), raced in thecolors of Mrs. John Magnier and defeated 2005 GardenCity winner Luas Line (Ire) (Danehill) in the DebutanteS. the previous season. Ironically, Silk and Scarlet wasamong Panza=s invitees to the 2005 American Oaks, but she finished well behind the sensational Japanesefilly Cesario (Jpn) (Special Week {Jpn}). Silk and Scarlethas since gone on to be an outstanding broodmare. Herfirst foal, the Giant=s Causeway colt Eishin Apollon, won the 2011 G1 Mile Championship S. for ToyomitsuHirai, while her next produce, Minorette=s 3/4-brotherMaster of Hounds (Kingmambo), landed the G1 JebelHatta S. in 2012 for Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa alMaktoum. A troubled fifth in a similartest back on the grass at the South Florida oval Mar.13, the homebred came from far back to post a mildupset in a main-track optional tagger at Pimlico May 2and returned a fortnight later to finish a solid thirdbehind Stopchargingmaria (Tale of the Cat) in the GIIBlack-Eyed Susan S. at Old Hilltop in her most recenttrip to the post. Drawn widest in this field of eight,Fortune Pearl and Trevor McCarthy allowed the field toclear and edged down towards the inside around theclubhouse turn and had only favored Joint Returnbehind as they raced into the backstretch. The twomarket rivals drew closer as a team nearing the secondturn, but Fortune Pearl was able to get the slightestjump on Joint Return, securing a three- or four-wide runwhile the chalk was forced to go overland. Though shewas fanned about seven deep into the stretch, JointReturn looked to have momentum on her side, but thatwide run took its toll, as Fortune Pearl came away lateto a convincing victory. Joint Return got her nose downon the wire just ahead of Aibhilin for second.

LAYING DOWN THE LAW Africa=s richest race, the G1 Vodacom Durban July, was billed as one of the most exciting sporting eventson the South African calendar, but it is likely no oneanticipated the drama that was to come as the 55,000on-track patrons--as well as viewers across the globe--waited out a near 30 minute inquiry for the result. Inthe end, stewardsupheld theobjection into thestretch run lodgedby the connectionsof race favoriteand starsophomoreLegislate (SAf)(Dynasty {SAf}),who passed thepost a headsecond to longshotWylie Hall (Aus)(Redoute=s Choice{Aus}) after a thrilling stretch duel. Exiting swiftly fromthe 14 hole, Legislate took up a lead that no onewanted on the run into the first turn. His one-lengthadvantage was short-lived, however, as the 33-1 shotWylie Hall charged up on the outside to take controlapproaching the halfway point. Rounding the turn abouttwo lengths behind that rival on the fence, Legislatewas tipped out by jockey Richard Fourie into thestraight to tackle Wylie Hall on the outside. The pairhooked up passing the 300-meter mark and battled outthe remainder of the stretch run while racing in tightquarters, with Wylie Hall keeping his head in frontthroughout and hitting the wire first. Within moments, the inquiry sign was lit up, and head-on shots revealedthe two horses had made contact numerous times inthe final stages. It was deemed that Wylie Hall hadinitiated the contact and done the majority of thedamage, preventing Legislate from getting past, andthus he was stripped of the victory. AI thought we hada good chance of winning it [during the inquiry],@ saidJonathan Snaith, who trains the winner with his brotherJustin. ALegislate came from off the pace, the otherhorse came across him three times, and I have nodoubt that if [Wylie Hall] kept a clear run, we wouldhave won the race. Bouncingback to take the G1 Cape Derby at odds of 33-1 whenstretched out to 2000 meters Feb. 1, Legislate addedthe G2 KZN Guineas in his first visit to Greyville May 3.He circled the field to take the G1 Daily News 2000here May 31, establishing himself as the leadingsophomore contender for the Durban July, and wassent off the 5-1 favorite yesterday. The victoryprovided Legislate a strong claim to Horse of the Yearhonors, and sealed the 2013/14 trainers= championshipfor Justin and Jonathan Snaith. The latter wascomplimentary of the ride given by jockey RichardFourie.

A[Fourie] had to take initiative, because there was nopace,@ Snaith explained. AHe found himself out there, sohe slowed it up. The horses came around him, andwhen he came into the straight, he had the winner thewhole way. Because [Wylie Hall] hung on him a fewtimes, it didn=t actually allow [Legislate] to go past, andI think the [stewards] definitely made the right decision. For the public, it was the form horse of the race--thefavorite. The champion has won it.@ Of the training title, Snaith added, AThat puts us fivemillion [Rand] ahead now, so it really looks like it=ssigned and sealed. It=s just been an amazing season. Wehave to thank all our clients who have supported us.It=s all come together--it=s been hard work for everyonethat=s been involved. But it=s a family business--myparents are sitting at home watching--and well done toeveryone.@

TRACKSIDE...with Liesl King

THE AGONY AND ECSTASY OF THE JULY As South Africa's premier race, the G1 VodacomDurban July is firmly in the spotlight. It is the one raceevery trainer, owner and jockey wants to win. Yet therace is never without controversy and drama. Usuallythe selection of the final field, which rests, according tothe race rules, in the hands of a panel, is enough tomake grown men cry when their star is left out of the

final 16. For every horsethat makes the final field, there is a hard luck storyof one who didn't. Then we get to therace itself. A tight bend, followed by a cutawayrail and a short 450 meterrun-in is by itself a recipefor potential disaster. Now add a slow pace ora wide draw, and you arebeginning to get thepicture. Dominant horses

in the July are few and far between, and a start tofinish winner almost unheard of. Dead heats? Well, wehave had two of those. A win from barrier 20?Superstar sire Dynasty did that as a 3-year-old. The onething the Vodacom Durban July hasn't had in recenttimes, though, was a winner by objection, the lastupheld objection being 20 years ago. Was it likely tohappen again? Of course! One just rather hoped that itnever did. Sadly, the saying >never say never' rang true today,as an objection was announced before the field hadeven returned to the paddock. Gone was the victory lapand the standing in the stirrups celebrations as thecrowd of 50,000 scream their approval. Instead, thewinner was sent back to the paddock to await theoutcome, while the runner-up's furious jockey headedfor the boardroom. One never wants to lose a race inthe boardroom, and one definitely does not want tolose the biggest race of the year in the boardroom. Yet,rules are rules, and while blissfully ignorant pressaround the world posted the results of the 2014Vodacom Durban July on their websites, proclaimingWylie Hall (Aus) (Redoute's Choice {Aus}) as the victor, the on-course crowd watched the drama play out in reallife. Down on the hallowed turf waited South Africa'sPresident, Jacob Zuma, ready to hand out the silversalvers, bottles of bubbly and roses to the winningconnections--except there weren't any. No trainer hadcome bounding down the steps three at a time. Nojockey had tried to imitate Frankie Dettori by leapingexuberantly off his trusty steed's back in the winner'scircle to the roar of the crowd. Instead, we had silence.

Silence as the President waited, the dignitarieswaited, the media waited and the crowd waited. When the announcement finally came, it was almost ananticlimax. The objection had been upheld. Legislate(SAf) (Dynasty({SAf}), the G1 Derby, G2 KRA Guineasand G1 Daily News 2000 winner, had added the R3.5million G1 Vodacom Durban July to his alreadyimpressive list of victories, thus delivering jockeyRichard Fourie his first Julyvictory and the 2013/14trainers' championship tohis trainer, Justin Snaith. The photographersgathered quickly, hopefulthat a victory parade wasnow on the cards, but yetagain, fate stepped in. Andas the sunny day turneddark with an approachingstorm, the announcementcame that Legislate hadpulled up slightly lame in hisnear fore and would not bereturning for his victorysash and celebratory lap ofhonor. In the end, his owners, trainer and jockeydonned the silver, red and blue sashes as they shookhands with the President. Fact: Legislate and Wylie Hall had bumped each otherin the desperate battle for the line. Fact: Legislate hadcome off worst from the encounter and was carried outslightly by Wylie Hall, yet the two finished with nosestouching. Would Legislate have won without theinterference? We will never know. What we do know isthat somehow we were all left with the overwhelmingfeeling that while we now had an official winner, it justwasn't the same. Fortunately, the somber mood did notlast very long, as up next was the last of the Grade 1races, the Garden Province S. The 6-year-old mare Beach Beauty (SAf) (Dynasty{SAf}) was out to defend her crown in one last gloriousrace before retiring to stud. As she made her moveunder regular jockey and old friend Sean Cormack, theannouncer called her home. "And here comes BeachBeauty!" The mare reached the lead, cruising past herrivals, and it seemed as if it was race over. Then out ofthe chasing pack charged her old enemy Hammie'sHooker (SAf) (Trippi). The younger mare was catchingBeach Beauty with every stride, and an upset lookedinevitable. However, this is Beach Beauty we are talking about, the small mare with the heart of a lion and anextraordinary will to win. Suddenly, Hammie's Hookerwas no longer gaining, and at Beach Beauty's quartersshe stayed. Cormack started celebrating a long waybefore the line, gaining himself a hefty fine, but hesimply didn't care. He was going to make the most ofthis oh so special victory. Beach Beauty crossed the line3/4 of a length in front, with Cormack still celebrating.

Trackside cont. The replay showed that, thankfully, I wasn't the onlyphotographer jumping up and down like a lunatic, screaming her home. In fact, the entire contingent ofphotographers, as well as the watching crowd, hadtheir arms in the air, celebrating her magnificent victory. Vodacom Durban July Day 2014 will go down inhistory as the race where the winner wasn't the winnerand another took his place. As with all things in life, however, things are never upside down for long. All ittook was a gutsy mare and a glorious victory to put theworld right again. Click here to share this story

U.N. preview cont.

Fittingly, the U.N. has two runners who last ran onforeign soil. Flaxman homebred Main Sequence(Aldebaran) has run some big races in Europe for DavidLanigan, including a second to Camelot (GB) (Montjeu{Ire}) in the 2012 G1 Epsom Derby and a secondbehind Mukhadram (GB) (Shamardal) in last May=s G3 Brigadier Gerard S. Third in a pair of Group 3's lastSeptember, the chestnut has not been seen since aneighth-place run in the contentious G1 QIPCOChampion S. Oct. 19. Graham Motion, who does verywell with fellow European imports, saddles MainSequence off a solid series of drills at Fair Hill. PearlBloodstock=s 2013 GI Arlington Million third Side Glance(GB) (Passing Glance {GB}) took the G1 LonginesMacKinnon S. in Australia last November. He has beenwinless in subsequent trips to Hong Kong, Dubai,Singapore and most recently Great Britain, where hewas ninth in Royal Ascot=s G1 Queen Anne S. over aninsufficient mile June 17.

MOON MISSION Having earned J “TDN Rising Star” J status andtaken each black-type rung on the ladder in his stride sofar, Sea The Moon (Ger) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) will havehis raw material truly tested today as he heads thehome defense for the 145th G1 Deutsches Derby atHamburg. Steered through Frankfurt=s G3Fruhjahrs-Preis des Bankhauses Metzler May 11 and theG2 Oppenheim-Union-Rennen at Cologne June 15 withhis perfect record intact, Gestut Gorlsdorf=s homebredencounters substantial overseas opposition, but hasChristophe Soumillon in the saddle for the first time.AHe has been in very good form since he last won atCologne, and we are very hopeful,@ said trainer MarkusKlug. AThis is a big test for him, but he has doneeverything well at home and will enjoy the extrafurlong. The ground at Hamburg is good, but there israin forecast and that will be even better for our horse. The owner wanted Christophe to ride him in theGerman Derby. We are lucky to have him, as he is oneof the best jockeys in the world. If all is well, we willthen look at the [G1] Grosser Preis von Baden and thenpossibly the [G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe].@ Klug alsosaddles Gestut Rottgen=s filly Weltmacht (GB) (MountNelson {GB}), who was second to Longina (Ger)(Monsun {Ger}) in Hoppegarten=s G2 Diana-Trial lasttime June 8. AShe is a nice filly,@ he added. AThis ismuch tougher [than Hoppegarten], but I hope she runswell.@ Supplemented this week, Susan Magnier=sGeoffrey Chaucer (Montjeu {Ire}) bids to atone for adisappointing effort when trailing in the June 7 G1Epsom Derby, and he is better judged on his priorunlucky third in Leopardstown=s G3 Derrinstown StudDerby Trial S. May 11. Adding to the international mixis Godolphin=s Pinzolo (GB) (Monsun {Ger}), who alsofailed to shine in the Derby, but displayed smart formwhen besting the subsequent G3 Prix Daphnis andListed Heron S. winner Master Carpenter (Ire)(Mastercraftsman {Ire}) in Newmarket=s Listed FairwayS. over 10 furlongs May 17.

AHe didn=t handle the hill at Epsom and James [Doyle]looked after him,@ trainer Charlie Appleby commented.AHe came out of the race well, so we decided tosupplement him. He=s in good order.@ Also in the mix isthe highly progressive Lucky Lion (GB) (High Chaparral{Ire}), who took Krefeld=s G3 Dr Busch Memorial Apr.27 before adding the G2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen to hislaurels at Cologne May 18. He bids to become the firstsince Lavirco (Ger) in 1996 to win both domesticClassics. Stall Furstenhof=s Wild Chief (Ger) (Doyen{Ire}) is another who has been involved in a Europeanfeature. He had some classy opponents behind whenfourth in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly at thestart of June, and arguably boasts the choice piece ofform in this lineup as a result.
