PASTOR’S PARISHABLES
It’s Pentecost Sunday. “Pentecost” “Pentecostal” “Pen-
tecostalism” Each of those words has its own connote-
tion & definition. Keeping it simple, “Pentecost” is an
event (& the liturgical feast commemorating it). “Pente-
costal” is a usable adjective that could crop up when we
describe our spiritual life & experience of the Holy
Spirit—without some of the specific features (dramatics?)
of Pentecostalism (see below). How about a stab at a little
glossary, dangerous as this is, on this Pentecost Sunday:
● “Evangelicalism” is a largely Protestant movement
that arose in the early 19th century. It emphasizes the
authority of the Bible, salvation as possible only through
regeneration or being “born again,” & zealous efforts to
convert others. This movement includes fundamentalism,
Pentecostalism, & the charismatic renewal.
● “Fundamentalism” is a term 1st used in 1920 for
evangelical Christians who oppose “modernist” theology
& the secularization of modern culture. Fundamentalists
preach the literal inerrancy of the Bible & tend to believe
that the healing Jesus practiced was for his time only.
● “Pentecostalism” is a movement that began in the
early years of the 20th century. It places supreme
importance on being baptized by the Holy Spirit, as
evidenced by speaking in tongues. Other supernatural
phenomena that are considered central include miracles,
faith healing, prophecies, & exorcism. The principal
Pentecostal denominations are the Assemblies of God,
the Church of God (Cleveland, TN), the Church of God
in Christ, the Pentecostal Holiness Church, & the Church
of the Foursquare Gospel.
● “The Charismatic renewal” movement, begun in the
early 1960s, includes some Protestants & Catholics who
adapt Pentecostal practices to their own traditions. Like
Pentecostals, they embrace healing as one of the many
gifts of the Holy Spirit but tend to be more accepting of
modern culture than Pentecostals & are widely accepting
of 1 another. They’re sometimes called neo-Pentecostals.
In the Mother Church—our apostolic & Catholic tradi-
tion—many of us are more & more comfortable using the
above terms in describing aspects of our spiritual life.
Except fundamentalism. (Although some of us, like me,
would say that in this generation there has arisen a form
of Catholic fundamentalism.) But, with some nuancing of
those definitions above, isn’t being “evangelical” part of
true, full, Catholic faith? Isn’t being “pentecostal,” in a
sense, part of being fully Catholic? And couldn’t we say
that a Catholic who’s not charismatic—alive with the
gifts of the Spirit & clearly bearing the Spirit’s fruits—
must not be fully initiated & is not fully mature??
Bishop Harrington will be visiting our parishes on the
weekend of June 9-10. No special occasion. I just want to
be away. Isn’t that nice? And he likes visiting here. And I
think there are many here who would enjoy seeing him.
3 more at SS P/P joined in the annual Catholic Minis-
tries Appeal last week, getting us closer to our goal:
SS PP: 55 (18.9%) have given $10,745 (62.1%) of goal.
St M: 19 (19.4%) have given $3,250 (53.4%) of goal.
(The goals this year are SS P/P: $17,300 & St M: $6,090)
Diocesan-wide, we’ve at 75.1% of our $2.1 million goal.
We’d like a date with you: Do you have any time free
Aug 8-11 or Sept 4-8 (SS P/P’ers) or Aug 15-16 (St.
M‘ers). We’re planning on a new pictorial directory.
(Members of either parish can use any times of either
parish; signups for times will begin early July.)
We’re honoring our high school graduates at Mass this
weekend. These are … “consequential” days in our
schools, for students & teachers alike. I thought some of
you might relate with (benefit from?) the following from,
oh, I don’t know, maybe, “Lamentation 0:0”??
Now it came to pass early in the morning, toward the last
day of the term, that there arose a multitude smiting their
books & wailing. There was much weeping & gnashing of
teeth, for the day of judgment was at hand; & they were
sure afraid. For they had left undone those things which
they ought to have done, & had done those things which
they ought not to have done; & there was no help for it.
And there were many abiding in the town which kept
watch over their books all night, but it availeth naught.
And some of them repented of their evil ways & of their
riotous living, but they have not any hope. Yet others
there are who arise peacefully, for they had prepared
themselves & had made straight the paths of knowledge:
& these were known as the faithful burners of the
midnight oil. And the multitude arose & ate the morning
meal: some with a light heart, some with a heavy heart,
but for the most part with no heart at all. And at the
house of study they came to pass. Some few were to pass
out. At the Final Hour there came among them one called
Teacher & Master who, with reckoning nigh, strewed
papers among them & went his way. Many & varied were
the answers they wrote: for some of the teachings had
been sown in fertile minds, others had fallen among
weeds, still others had fallen on hard rock, & some by the
wayside. And of the multitude there were those who wrote
for one hour, others for two. But some turned their faces
away sorrowfully & wept, for these were the ones who
had not any hope. And when all had finished, they
gathered up their belongings & quietly went their
separate ways, each one on her own path & each one
vowing to himself: “I shall not pass this way again!”
We pray for them—seriously—as Jesus prayed Holy
Thursday evening for his graduating disciples: "O Father
most holy, protect them; as long as I was with them, I
guarded them. I kept careful watch; I do not ask you to
take them out of the world, but to guard them from evil."

SSPP Cemetery Sunday: We are going back to having
a second collection for Calvary Cemetery on Sunday,
May 20th. There are some needed improvements at the
cemetery. Several trees need to be removed near the altar
at a cost of $3,500. The altar needs renovations that are
estimated at $4,880.00. Your generosity on May 20th can
help to cover these costs. (The Cemetery Fund
Envelopes in your envelope packets are being
discontinued.) If you forgot your contribution for the
Cemetery, put it in a blank envelope in next week’s
collection.
Spring has Sprung: It’s been a long time coming. Now
that things are greening up, if you have any perennials
that you will be splitting, please consider donating them
to the SS Peter & Paul/social hall courtyard - plantings.
A group of “gardening angels” have been busy adding
plants and bulbs to the courtyard and there is still room
for more. Take a peak and enjoy the tulips and daffodils.
Please call the rectory – 526-5626 if you have plants to
donate. See what blooms next.
