The class is titled, “The 23rd Psalm for the 21st Century: finding modern day meaning and comfort form the words of an ancient shepherd.” Taught by: Debbi Ware In the upstairs classroom in the Annex. Special Contribution for Houston Disaster Relief We have all seen the news media reports on the devastation across southern Texas from Hurricane/Tropical Storm Harvey. Many of us know relatives and even some of our former members who are in the affected areas. In response to many inquires about how we might assist in the disaster relief efforts, and after some research, we have elected to send our contributions to the Memorial church of Christ in Houston. This congregation is coordinating the receipt and distribution of funds for the immediate needs of churches and individuals af- fected by the devastating floods in their area. On Sunday September 10 th we will seek a special offering from our congregation to provide some much needed resources to assist the victims around Houston. Can we as a congregation raise $10,000 to provide assistance to those who have suffered so tragically? We urge you to give careful consideration in this effort to reach out to those in such great need. In small group tonight, we will be looking at Luke 22:24-38. Please read over that before we come together. Here are a few questions to guide our thoughts for our conversation tonight. At the table (and especially on the cross), Jesus completely redefined greatness. What differences do you see between Jesus’ definition of what it means to be great, and fallen humanity’s definition of greatness? Which is more appealing to you? How do we pursue Jesus way of greatness? Peter was very sure of himself and of his dedication to Jesus. What resources do you think Peter had in mind to use to keep his word? What did Jesus know about Peter that he didn’t know about himself? What does this conversation tell us about human will power and our ability to be dedicated to God by our own strength? How do you understand Jesus discussion about swords? Why would he tell them to sell their cloak and buy a sword? There were twelve of them, so how is two enough for them? What has changed since he sent them out on their first preaching mission? What does all this tell you about missional life in our world? 1975 Haywood Rd Hendersonville, NC 28791 / 828 692-0306 / www.hvlcoc.org hvlcoc, hvlcocyouth hvlcocyouth [email protected] http://www.youtube.com/user/HVLCOC September 3, 2017 I Scream, You Scream, We all Scream for Ice Cream Many enjoyed a time of fellowship with a variety of ice cream and toppings Sunday night following a devotional.
