Take Up Your Cross and Follow Me
When we are talking about someone who has a great deal of suffering in his or her life, we often will say, “That person has a real cross to bear.” The imagery of the cross is powerful and its
symbolism is universally accepted. The cross has come to be the great symbol of suffering, but also of glory. Death first had to occur, but then there was resurrection. All of us have crosses to bear as we
go through life. Some people seem to have more crosses than others. Sometime it just does not seem
fair. How do we as Christians look at the cross that Jesus is asking us to take up as we follow Him?
Jesus never promised His disciples that following Him would be easy. However, He promised them eternal life as well as blessings in the present world. In the long run, we know that eternal life
in heaven is our goal. In the meantime, we must live in the “already here but not yet” place called
earth. The Kingdom of God has arrived, but its fullness will not be experienced until our Lord comes again. Let us lift up the cross our Lord asks us to carry. The cross may involve giving up something
we like. It may involve making a sacrifice or doing without so someone else can be taken care of. It may involve a change of behavior, way of thinking or speaking. Whatever is involved, it will not be
easy. Lest we become discouraged as we carry the cross, let us never forget that Jesus said, “The Son
of Man will come with His angels in His Father’s glory, and then He will repay all according to His conduct.” (Matthew 16:27)
Father David
Thank You from the Maryknoll Missionaries
“The Maryknoll Missionaries wish to thank the parishioners of St. James the Apostle for their generosity and in particular for their hospitality to Fr. Thomas Tiscornia, M.M. Fr. Tom was pleased to be here and would like the parish to know that their gifts will be of great help in bringing the Gospel to all nations. The parishioners of St. James the Apostle will be remembered in the Masses and prayers of the Maryknoll Community.” Father David
Are you Called to the Permanent Diaconate?
While all the baptized are called to holiness, some men are called by God to holiness through the diaconate. This call must be carefully discerned through a process set forth by the Diocese of Joliet in accordance with the National Directory for the Formation and Ministry of the Permanent Diaconate in the United States.
The Diocese of Joliet has begun the process of inviting men to discern the call to the diaconate. For more information and to access the application visit our website at www.deaconapp.org.

Gift Bearers Wanted for Weekend Masses
The St. James Worship Commission has decided to try out a new way to assign Gift Bearers at each of our weekend Masses. All St. James parishioners are invited to sign up to serve as a gift bearer on a particular date and Mass time. You may sign up for a single slot or you may gather family or friends together to sign up for the minimum of three slots needed. If you have more than three who you want to join you (such as a larger family), they are welcome to process down the aisle with you, but there are at most three items to carry—including the bread and wine.
To sign up to serve as a Gift Bearer at an upcoming Mass in October or November, please visit our parish website stjamesge.org and click on the link in the header that reads: Sign Up to be a Gift Bearer at Weekend Mass. This will give you more information and link you to the sign up form. We hope you will participate in this important ministry!

[ STEWARDSHIP NOTE FOR TODAY ]
The sin of the rich man in today’s parable was not that he was rich, but that he failed to share his wealth with the beggar at his gate. He knew Lazarus, perhaps walked by him every time he came in or out, but did nothing to relieve his suffering. Is there a Lazarus in my life? What am I doing to help?
The collection amount for September 21/22 is $15,132.00
Your generosity is greatly appreciated and needed!

Free Movie Night: 9 Days that Changed the World hosted by the Knights of Columbus
The Knights of Columbus Council #9806 of St. James the Apostle will be sponsoring a showing of the movie “Nine Days that Changed the World.” This movie chronicles St. Pope John Paul II’s historic nine day pilgrimage to Poland in June of 1979. This trip created a revolution of conscience that transformed Poland and fundamentally reshaped the spiritual and political landscape of the 20th Century. “Nine Days that Changed the World” is a story of human liberation, revealing the extraordinary power of St. Pope John Paul II’s worldwide message of freedom through faith.
This free event will take place on Wednesday October 16 at 7:00 P.M. in St. James Hall. All St. James parishioners and friends are invited to attend.
