God in the arts HE GAVE US
EYES TO SEE
THEM - CHURCH
MONUMENTS
This month as we
continue our walk
through the church
building, we focus on
monuments. George
Herbert has a poem
on this theme which
contrasts the body we see represented in marble, but now consigned to
dust, with the soul released to perform its eternal devotions. Such monu-
ments are often a reminder of the frailty of life and the certainty of death,
symbolized by an hour-glass or a skull or classical urns.
In St Cuby’s Church, Duloe in Cornwall there is a fine slate memorial of an
Elizabethan lady, Anna Coffyn, depicted in a richly embroidered dress with
gloves and a prayer book, ready for church. Underneath are the skull and
crossbones, a memento mori, a reminder that death has visited even this
elegant lady. That sign of death can come as a shock to us when we are
committed so much to living and getting the most out of life today. Death
intrudes violently into the world we would like.
But in St Bartholomew’s Church, Much Marcle in Herefordshire, there is a
monument that tells us something of the serenity of death. It is the effigy of
Blanche Mortimer, who died in 1347. The church is filled with superb monu-
ments, but this one has its own distinct and moving beauty. The carving of
her dress shows buttoned sleeves and a wimple, while one hand holds a ro-
sary. She impresses us with her loveliness, even in the midst of death.
Leonardo da Vinci wrote, ‘While I thought that I was learning how to live, I
have been learning how to die.’ As we dedicate ourselves to God in this life,
we can trust with Blanche Mortimer in the 14th century that His will is for
us to be with him forever. This life is not just our preparation for death: it is
our schooling for heaven, and life in heaven means life with God.

Julie Barrett (our new Churchwarden)
writes As noted in the previous page, by the
time you read this, I, with Quinlan Terry,
will have been admitted to the role of
Churchwarden (CW) in our Parish.
I hope I will be allowed some regular
space here in order to let you know what
is going on from a CW’s point-of- view, to
tell you something about what a CW does
(as I find that out!), and to introduce
myself/what I stand for. I also hope to
encourage you to tell me – and other PCC
members – how we can best serve you,
our Parishioners, and address your
concerns, consonant with loving God and
loving others with our whole selves. First,
let me admit to some surprise at being in
this position. I was not expecting to be
elected, and this only happened because
Richard Hopkins has understandably
decided to take a step back for the time
being, given his very heavy work and family
commitments. I have just started a new
law job in the city alongside my teaching
work at the University of Essex. But I don’t
have onerous family commitments any
more – my two offspring have lived
elsewhere and my partner died six years
ago, so I should have more space and time
to take on this unusual role. Initially, I
stubbornly refused to allow my name to be
put forward, but began to realise that my
life is not all about what I want or feel I can
manage – but about God’s plan; I need to
learn to trust that God will provide 2 and
that God’s grace is sufficient 3 . So instead,
I started to think about what issues our
local Church is facing that seem, to me,
really urgent. And there are two areas I
have grown to feel strongly about: our
community and our communication.
I will expand on these two themes in the
coming months, but I do want us to have a
conversation – a two-way communication
between our Church and our community.
So please do contact me if you have
something to say, or if you have a question
you’d like me to try to answer: [email protected].

BROOKLYN tells the profoundly
moving story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse
Ronan), a young Irish immigrant
navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Lured by the promise of
America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother's home for the
shores of New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly
diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love.
But soon, her new vivacity is disrupted by her past, and Eilis must choose
between two countries and the lives that exist within.

New Council A new Parish Council took office in May.
There are currently eight Councillors and one vacancy. Re-
elected were Nicola Baker, Sheila Beeton, Chris Clark, Ann Follows,
Christine Frost and Kevin Taylor. They were joined by new recruits, Jane
Meakin and Jeffrey Herbert. Sheila Beeton has been elected as Chair for
2016/17. Specific responsibilities of each Councillor are shown on the website.
Our intrepid Parish litter picker, Iris Hindley attended a wet Buckingham Palace Garden party in May, accompanied
by her husband Brian, the Assistant Parish Clerk.
Footpaths Following positive discussions between
all relevant bodies affected by the deteriorating footpath from Dedham to
Flatford, a solution has been found and work will commence shortly to renovate
the area around Leaping Horse bridge, fencing off a section to prevent entry of
cows, establishing a new gate and digging out and reinforcing the footpath.
Work has now started on cutting and maintaining Dedham Parish Footpaths;
please report any concerns to Cllr. Ann Follows (322038).

HIDDEN TREASURES
St Helena Hospice is inviting local
people to showcase their gardens from
March to August in order to raise
money in support of its patients and
their families.
The hospice recognises that lots of
its supporters have beautiful gardens
nestled away which have had a lot of
hard work, time and effort put into,
and it would love supporters to share
their masterpieces in aid of its work.
The community fundraising team will
provide fundraising materials for any-
one opening their garden as well as
helping with advertising to the local
community. An event raising just £25
could pay for a chaplaincy visit to pro-
vide a ‘listening ear’ to a patient, re-
gardless of any religious beliefs. A small
donation can make a large difference.

ST HELENA HOSPICE VOLUNTEERS
Currently St Helena Hospice has
approximately 800 volunteers giving
their time to support the hospice in
lots of different ways, whether on a
regular basis or every so often to help
at events. All of its volunteers play a
vital part in the work that it does, and
as its services expand, so does it need
its volunteer team to!
Volunteering is a great way to in-
crease confidence and make new
friends, learn new skills, gain experi-
ence in a work environment and most
importantly make a difference. By do-
nating your precious time and valuable
skills you could save the hospice mon-
ey which it can use to support patients
and their families and carers.
The hospice recently spoke to Bev
Adams one of its volunteers who
works on the reception desk at its In-
patient Unit, Myland Hall, about what
she would say to someone thinking
about volunteering:
“Do it. You would get so much satis-
faction and know you’re helping to
support people in your community.
Those few hours from your day could
make a huge difference to someone
else’s.” If you’re interested in becom-
ing a volunteer for St Helena Hospice
