The readings this week are geng us ready for Pentecost in a couple of weeks– for the celebraon of the arrival of the Holy Spirit. I oſten think that the Holy Spirit is the one person of the Trinity that is hard to fathom:- we can easily relate to Jesus because he was a human being like us; we can relate to God the Father because we all had/have fathers or father-figures in our lives; but the Holy Spirit seems just a lile too weird or myscal. Today’s Gospel from John contains the promise of the Holy Spirit. John describes the Holy Spirit as our advocate who will teach us everything, remind us of all Jesus said and who will fill us with peace – what a great promise! : - but the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all I have said to you Peace I bequeath to you, my own peace I give you, a peace the world cannot give, this is my giſt to you. That is what is promised to us, but who exactly is the Holy Spirit? My favourite musings on the Holy Spirit are by American Chrisan writer and blogger, Rachel Held Evans (who tragically and unexpectedly died early this month while only in her mid 30’s). In her book, “Searching for Sunday: Loving, Leaving and Finding Church” (as quoted from her blog hps://rachelheldevans.com/blog/spirit-pentecost-searching-for-sunday), she describes the Holy Spirit as: Like breath, as close as the lungs, the chest, the lips” Like fire, decepvely polite in its dance atop the wax and wick of our church candles, but wild and mercurial as a storm when unleased.” Like a seal, an emblem bearing the family crest, a promise of belonging, protecon, favour” “Like wind, earth’s oldest sojourner, which in one place readies a sail, in another whiles a rock, in another commands the trees to bow, in another gently liſts a bridal veil” “Like a bird, fragile alloy of heaven and earth, where wind and feather and flight meets breath and blood and bones” “Like a womb, from which the living are born again” My prayer for us all this month is that we come to know the peace of this Holy Spirit and that we are refreshed in the reality of her promises. The readings this week are getting us ready for Pentecost in a couple of weeks– for the celebration of the arrival of the Holy Spirit. I often think that the Holy Spirit is the one person of the Trinity that is hard to fathom:- we can easily relate to Jesus because he was a human being like us; we can relate to God the Father because we all had/have fathers or father-figures in our lives; but the Holy Spirit seems just a little too weird or mystical.

Today’s Gospel from John contains the promise of the Holy Spirit. John describes the Holy Spirit as our advocate who will teach us everything, remind us of all Jesus said and who will fill us with peace – what a great promise! : -

but the Advocate, the Holy Spirit,

whom the Father will send in my name,

will teach you everything

and remind you of all I have said to you

Peace I bequeath to you,

my own peace I give you,

a peace the world cannot give, this is my gift to you.

That is what is promised to us, but who exactly is the Holy Spirit? My favourite musings on the Holy Spirit are by American Christian writer and blogger, Rachel Held Evans (who tragically and unexpectedly died early this month while only in her mid 30’s). In her book, “Searching for Sunday: Loving, Leaving and Finding Church” (as quoted from her blog https://rachelheldevans.com/blog/spirit-pentecost-searching-for-sunday), she describes the Holy Spirit as:

“Like breath, as close as the lungs, the chest, the lips”

“Like fire, deceptively polite in its dance atop the wax and wick of our church candles, but wild and mercurial as a storm when unleased.”

“Like a seal, an emblem bearing the family crest, a promise of belonging, protection, favour”

“Like wind, earth’s oldest sojourner, which in one place readies a sail, in another whittles a rock, in another commands the trees to bow, in another gently lifts a bridal veil”

“Like a bird, fragile alloy of heaven and earth, where wind and feather and flight meets breath and blood and bones”

“Like a womb, from which the living are born again”

My prayer for us all this month is that we come to know the peace of this Holy Spirit and that we are refreshed in the reality of her promises. Kathy Asnicar, Parishioner

Food for thought from our first Carmel

Conversation

On May 1st, approximately thirty parishioners

gathered in the school hall for the first in our

series of Carmel Conversations. A new initiative

of the Parish Advisory Council, Carmel

Conversations are designed to provide the

opportunity to meet in a relaxed atmosphere

and talk about issues pertinent to us as a parish

community. In our first conversation, so ably

facilitated by Carmel Dunne, we explored the

aspiration of inclusion.

The discussion was rich an diverse with as

many questions raised as answers given.

Responses to Carmel’s invitation to explore the

notion fo inclusion centred on our individual

readiness to do so, ways in which we as a

parish could be more inclusive, how the broader

church speaks of inclusion and ways in which

we could reach out to others. Activities such as

taking risks, participations, engagement and

being intentional in forming community were

common to all four themes which emerged.

We were reminded that inclusion is a gift we can

give to others; that it is a form of authentic

liberation. It does not presuppose or require us

to approve of all values and behaviours, but true

inclusion does require us to be slow to judge

and anchored in a spirituality of humility. We

were reminded of the words of Thomas Merton:

Inclusion is fostered with great simplicity of

heart.

Providing hospitality as a means of welcoming,

outreach and growth as a more inclusive

community was a recurring comment. To

celebrate our Parish Feast Day we intend to do

just that. All are invited to come together at

10am on 21st July for Mass in the school hall

which will be followed by a BBQ celebration of

the Feast of Our Lady of Mt Carmel. You will

hear more of these plans in the weeks to come.

Our conversations and explorations of how to

become a more inclusive community will

continue so that the words of one of our

conversationalists become a lived reality.

Let all who come to Mt Carmel know that they

are loved and never alone.

Join us on July 21st!
