WELCOME to The Sunday Times
Green List 2010, our annualcompetition to find companies atthe cutting edge of improvingcorporate environmentalperformance.
Now in its third year thisventure reflects the changingmood in the business world.Making a profit for shareholdersis no longer enough. Todaycompanies have a widerresponsibility to minimise theimpact of what they do on theenvironment. In a new politicallandscape and despite ongoingeconomic uncertaintyconsumers, clients and peersexpect it. Building on ourprevious two years experienceof the Green List, we havemodified the questions we askcompanies and their employees. With the benefit of year-on-yearresults we can see how fargreen companies embed greenpolicies and initiatives intosupply chains, and how theenvironmental messagesemployees receive at work
affect their behaviour at home. The 60 companies listed are
all at the forefront of makingreal environmental change. Theyare innovative, progressive andbuzzing with new ideas. Theyrange from API Laminates, themanufacturer of luxurypackaging staffed by just 89employees, to BT Group, thecommunications giant which hasa staff of 85,000. A commonsense of social responsibilitypermeates them all.
Our Best Green Companiesenterprise is unique. There areplenty of environmental awardsout there, but this is the firstrobust methodology to measureenvironmental performance and, crucially, to survey staff to findout whether the corporate greenglow is more than just windowdressing. The views of almost27,000 employees are includedthis year.
A total of 92 companies tookpart in the competition, of which87 completed the process. We
look forward to welcoming evenmore companies into thecontest in 2011.
I am grateful to our researchpartners Bureau Veritas andMunro Global for theirdedication in co-producing thissurvey and I thank ourcompetitor-sponsors, B&Q,Canary Wharf Group andSkanska UK for recognising thevalue of this venture.
