EACH year the city buzzes withexcitement during the DarwinFestival.
This year is no exception. I’veenjoyed the events I haveattended so far – including Choir
Girl last week – and am lookingforward to the Trade Winds onFriday evening.
If you haven’t made it out yet,jump online and check out thelibraries Festival Fun program,which includes extended hoursat the city library. Head todarwin.nt. gov.au/libraries/events to see the latest program.
You can also pick up a greatmeal with the family at FestivalPark (next to the Civic Centre) orjust enjoy the ambience.
Today the City of Darwin ishosting a public workshop thatprovides an opportunity foreveryone to get involved in thedevelopment of the Darwin CBDMasterplan. More than 100people will be meeting to discussthe future planning of the CBD.
There are limited placesavailable and I encourage anyonewho is interested to join in at theDouble Tree by Hilton.
You can also have input on theproject via a survey on ourwebsite. The Darwin CBDMasterplan aims to produce aprecinct-based blueprint and setof principles to guide Darwin’sgrowth over the next 20 years.
We are focused on liveability,connections into the CBD,potential areas for newdevelopment, and guidance forthe private sector on how to getthe best commercial return oninvestment in the CBD.
These opportunities willinclude:
l Movement by private andpublic transport, pedestrians andbicycle.
l The public realm, includingstreets, parks, malls, the water’sedge and open spaces.
l Infrastructure such asarterial roads, bridges, utilityservices and social infrastructure.
l Potential and existing touristnetworks and facilities that tellthe stories of Darwin.
l Land uses such as office,retail, tourism, residential andcommunity spaces.
l Landscaping character.

Early vote option availableEARLY voting in this year’s feder-al election began yesterday, forvoters unable to vote on the day.
‘‘The early voting servicesallow people who may beworking, away on holidays orcannot easily access a pollingcentre on Saturday, September7, to register their vote in advanceso they do not miss out on havingtheir voice heard at this election,’’said NT electoral officer RobertPugsley. ‘‘In Darwin, the early
voting centre is located at theDouble Tree by Hilton EsplanadeHotel, at 116 The Esplanade.’’
‘‘Early voting services forTerritorians will be available atother locations around the Terr-itory including Darwin Internat-ional Airport, Lyons, Palmerston,Fred’s Pass, Jabiru, Katherine,Nhulunbuy and Tennant Creek,’’Mr Pugsley said.

Helping girls with life skillsTHE Palmerston Girls Academywill be hosting the 2013 NestleDeadly Chicks MentoringSeminar from today until Friday.
Around 100 girls from acrossNT will take part. Over the threedays the girls will rotate througheducational workshopsconcerning personalpresentation, nutrition andhygiene, sexual and mentalhealth, resume writing, interviewskills, financial literacy, respect
for culture, tertiary educationoptions and workplacereadiness.
The workshops will focus onthe benefits of positive self-image, educational commitment,responsible personal conduct,employment, respect for self andothers, and pride in culture.
Prominent indigenous women,such as Dorothy Morrison, chiefexecutive of Heart FoundationDarwin, will be there.
