over the last 3 months, we did

not want to leave anything out…

July was important as I went to

the Ministry of Social Affairs with Soksan to sign the Memo-

Sunrise Three. We are lucky to

have a special relationship with

the Ministry. Our annual trip to

what a great time we all had

(more on page 5) but I needed

I spent some time in Bangkok

having a series of health tests

August was the Humanitarian

The E-Library has attracted

at least 30 children daily

into the library to practice

their listening, search the

internet to prepare their

homework and assignments

for Khmer and English les-

sons, reading books etc.

TV has been connected to the cable network so now

the children can watch ABC

Australia Network, CNN,

BBC, Cartoon Network, Dis-

covery, WildLife, Animal

Planet, National Geographic,

Channel News Asia etc.

They also enjoy many good

DVDs of English documenta-

ries on animals, environ-

ment conservation, history

and other educational Eng-

lish programs organized by

our Librarian.

When Sue and Trevor Town-

send visited earlier this year

(for the past 3 years, Sue

has been our dedicated sup-

port to the students study-

ing in Adelaide), a fruitful

discussion ensued on the

possibility of establishing an

E-Library.

A few months later, Sue and

Trevor were able to confirm

the project could be com-

menced with funds from a

very kind sponsor, the

"Brighton Jetty Guys" of

Adelaide. With their dona-

tion, we have been able to

set up a smart board wall to

separate the studio from the

reading area and it now has

chairs, headphones, TV,

DVD player and amplifier.

Khmer General Education Opening Ceremony, Academic Year 2013-14

On September 2nd, an official opening of the 2013-2014 school year was held at Sovannaphumi School where our Sunrise One chil-

dren attend. Full scholarships for 13 years of education were awarded for 20 of our Sunrise students, courtesy of Prime Minister Hun

Sen. The school also presented scholarships (with values of 15% to 50% of annual education costs), letters of appreciation and gifts

to students who achieved from 1st to 5th

place in their annual results of the

2012/2013 academic year. 27 of our

students from grade 2 to grade 11 re-

ceived awards.

At the school’s request, a group of chil-dren from Khmer traditional dance and

music classes performed in the opening

ceremony. There were 7 Khmer tradi-

tional dances. Their performance was an

indicator of our positive achievements in

contributing to the conservation of

Khmer traditional cultures and Sunrise

has become well-known for serving the

best interest of all children.

Education is considered a privi-

leged program for Sunrise Chil-

dren’s Villages. In 2013, we have

made much meaningful progress

in respect to both attendances

and results of the children’s Eng-

lish, computer skill training and

Khmer general education.

There is no doubt that the library

has hugely and meaningfully con-

tributed to the Education pro-

gram. Now this has been consid-

erably enhanced by the inclusion

of our E-Library to further de-

velop reading and listening skills.

Deepest heartfelt thanks to our

kind sponsors, the "Brighton

Jetty Guys" and others who

have donated specifically to this

project through our new web-

site.

We plan to equip more updated

books in both Khmer and Eng-

lish, not only for our Sunrise

children but also the children

living in surrounding communi-

ties.

years now. We are building a

lasting relationship with Aust-

brokers and are very grateful to

them, especially as they have

also committed to financing the

travel costs for 2014.

I spoke at the Executive Assis-

tant’s Breakfast Session in Syd-

ney and made some new con-

tacts and signed up sponsors. I

did several radio interviews and

one with a journalist from the

Sydney Morning Herald who is

coming to Cambodia to write

about orphanages. I flew to

Perth to speak at the Zonta 12th

Biennial District 23 Conference in Scarborough and met an

amazing lot of strong women all

working for their communities. I

have to admit I felt the cold and

longed for sunny Cambodia.

I addressed the school as-

sembly of Mercy College in

Perth, where children are

raising money for us by

putting change in a tin from

their lunch money and doing

cake sales. What a giving lot

of children they are. I did a

public lecture at the Man-

ning Library in West Perth,

where I was thrilled to have

some Sunrise sponsors turn

up. The women from the

Helping Hands Foundation,

who have been visiting and

raising money for us for

years, had a dinner for me and presented me with a

cheque for $5,000 which

brought tears to my eyes.

They are regular visitors to

Sunrise.

I did 6 radio interviews in Perth

and was also a guest on Chan-

nel Ten’s ‘The Project’, which I

hope will bring us many more

needed sponsors. Finally, at

the end of the month, I flew to

Canberra to give a public lec-

ture at the Australian National

University’s Gender Institute

and had friends host wonderful

fundraisers for me in the ACT.

Through all these events and

fundraisers, I know that many

more people are now donating

to Sunrise and this encourages

me to continue doing what I do

to raise awareness of our

needs. I must thank many wonderful friends who wel-

comed me in their homes while

I was traveling and made life

so much easier for me – David

Cossey, Jim and Yana Glaros,

Tahli Shepherd and her husband

Justin, Pat Blamey, Simone and

Nick Heydon, Dawn Booth, Bar-

bara Zuegg and John and Jan

Munro. I was able to see many

friends and sponsors and my

sisters and nieces and although

it was a gruelling travel pro-

gram, I enjoyed every minute of

it and never forget how vital

each and every sponsor is to me

and the Sunrise children.

I will spend a couple of weeks in

Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait and

Doha in October and let’s hope I

can report good news about my

fundraising time there in the

next newsletter. Love and light, Geraldine Cox AM,

Country Director and President “There's a crack in everything -That's how the light gets in…”

Sunrise Two has just received the official offer of 30-year free lease of land and buildings from the Royal Government of Cambodia

following several months of application and negotiation. We are very pleased with this outcome for the future of Sunrise Two. A won-

derful donation from Mary Gourley and her team from the Juniper Network Foundation Fund has provided the children of Sunrise Two

with school materials and bedding for the coming year and also supported the career orientation project.

Our community based child support program has been extended for another year. Every day at Sunrise One, we have 14 children and

young Buddhist monks who come to study English and computer and every Thursday we have 23 local children attending our dance

and music classes. We have also been supporting 11 children living with families in 4 provinces so that they are able to access Khmer

and English education, health care, counseling and basic food support. We hope to support more children with special needs who will

benefit from the Sunrise programs.

A Career Orientation and Job Preparedness project for High School students has been implemented to provide necessary information,

self-confidence, life coping skills, and training and students in grades 11 and 12 and university to ensure that they are ready for job

placement and independent life when they leave their Sunrise family.

At Sunrise One, Mrs Sona, an engineer from Engineering Without Borders, conducted an awareness session for interested students

and described ideas and theories relating to physics and engineering. The students then undertook the task of building ships and

tested their achievements.

And special thanks to Leah Clayton and the many other donors who have contributed to the refurbished kitchen at Sunrise Two. We

now have a stainless steel table for food preparation, cabinets and new equipment.

Sunrise One has been completely repainted, including the kitchen and dining room, children’s rooms,

classrooms, dance and music hall, library and office. The children were fully involved in choosing their

favourite colours for their sleeping areas and classes.

A very kind sponsor, Rebecca Nickolakis, has do-

nated 10 bikes for children at Sunrise Two which is

very useful for our older children’s transport to

school.

A generous donation of a Tuk Tuk from the

Bendigo Bank organized by our new Treasurer,

Richard Fennell, is especially useful for transport-

ing the younger children to school.

An annual Memorial service has been arranged for many years for our deceased

children. This year’s service was held on August 21 with all staff and children

participating.

Five Buddhist monks and a group of Buddhist practitioners were invited to bless

the facility and dedicate all the food to all of our Sunrise children who have

passed away.

Child Development & Parenting Skills This special course was provided to our caregivers and staff in order for them to

be aware of children’s needs and child developmental stages, to be able to pro-

vide effective parenting care for children and to help them cope with school and

social problems.

Domestic Violence Domestic Violence Awareness Training was conducted to provide staff, especially

house parents and caregivers, with an understanding of what constitutes domes-

tic violence. The root causes which lead to committing family violence were iden-

tified to help prevent them from being victims or perpetrators of domestic vio-

lence, particularly to children.

Spelling Bee contest in July

A group of 9 Sunrise One students entered the Spelling Bee contest conducted by Sovannaphumi

school in July. As a result, 4 of our Sunrise girls (Phorn Soknay, Sok Heng, Hir Bunary and Ung

Thavedy) were champions in the contest among hundreds of contestants from schools across

Phnom Penh and were each awarded a one term scholarship for their English course. Congratula-

tions to them all.

Khmer Proverb Something tasty to the mouth is not as potent as something tasty to the soul.

Update on Kei Kei has now returned to Cambodia following his treatment at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide. He is now

able to walk faster and has more stamina, but he will still need monthly blood transfusions and medication to continue

growing. We will be able to supply the medication he needs (Exjade— the oral once-daily medication that reduces iron

overload and allows people with thalassemia to live a near normal life span) but 200 other children at the Angkor Hospital

for Children in Siem Reap also need this medication.

Visitors to Siem Reap could donate directly to the hospital for the supply of this important medication or could donate

blood at the hospital to help all the children with thalassemia. Without Exjade, children with thalassemia like Kei can ex-

pect to die in their twenties.

2013 Australian Study Tour For several years now, Peter Davies (one of our Board Members) has organized an annual study tour for 4-6 students at the Central

Coast Grammar School, New South Wales. Somonny Mith gives his views on this wonderful opportunity below:

“Australia is the development country, I was very happy that I could go to Australia in Study Tour Program with my mates in Sun-

rise Children’s Village. While I was staying in Australia, I could get many benefits, challenge, experi-

ence and I had joined many activities with my host family and my school. • I could know the communication of Australian people (friendly and helpful)

• In free time most people always spend their time and money for holiday and sport • Culture: they always respect each other and especially they respect the law of their country

• Education: most students always study hard, respect the time.

My Challenges: At first time, when I arrived in Australia, I felt so boring because I could not under-

stand about Australian culture. Especially I could not understand my host family as well, they spoke

so fast. And I had tried my best to understand about them and finally I could understand. Other

thing, my school is bigger than in Cambodia and I had lost many times, but my friends in CCGS are

friendly and helpful. They guided me the directions that I should go or should not go.

My Experiences: While I was staying in Australia I thought I had got many experience from Austra-

lian culture. Example, Australian people always respect the law, especially I had focused on traffic law.

I have been to many places in Australia: Aquarium, Imax (the biggest 3D cinema), Reptile

Park, Powerhouse Museum, tall ship, played golf, Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Beaches…

My Activities: I had joined many activities while I was staying in Australia: • I studied at CCGS with my friends from Sunrise and in Australia

• I went to many excursions with my school • I went to watch football match with my host family

• I did two key rings in Industrial class • I practiced my English with my host family and other people in Australia

• I had said thank you to our sponsors.”

A romduol, a small yellowish-white flower, is the national flower of the Kingdom of Cambodia. Since ancient

times, Cambodian women have often been compared to the Romduol flower because of its attractive fra-

grance; a unique scent that is prominent in the late afternoon and can travel over long distances with the

wind. With its sturdy stems that measure up to 30cm, the Romduol plant can grow to a height of 12 meters.

These plants are being planted to enhance public parks. ….Wikipedia

The Barclays Bank of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates have been very

generous and supportive to our top outstanding students and seven of

them were provided with an iPad each. Another 24 students who also

received outstanding results in their Khmer general studies were pre-

being on hand to make the presentations.

Our three-day annual beach trip to Kompong Som was arranged from July 4th to 6th. It was a wonderful trip when all staff and chil-

dren from both centres, Sunrise One and Sunrise Two, travel together to the beach, and enjoyed seafood, sea swimming, sports, ba-

nana riding and dancing.

Three of Sunrise One’s music students did a special performance with their instruments, including violin, saxophone and clarinet.

Thanks to our supporters who donate specifically to this annual treat for our children.

New Nursery Classroom at Sunrise Two

Thanks to a generous sponsor, we have been able to commence work on our new nursery class-

room at Sunrise 2, separating an area from the existing library. This will certainly enhance the

learning environment of our younger children.

Library Renovations & E-Library at

Sunrise Two

Considerable progress has been made to modify the existing

library in Sunrise 2 to attract more children to read and prac-

tice their English skills by creating a comfortable space.

This has been made possible by Sarah Kang in memory of her

Dad, William Bunthon Kang, Kate Reilly (Baraka) and Nigel and

Lani Clements. Their generous gifts will be much appreciated

by the children.

Sunrise kids cook for Sydney’s homeless at Our Big Kitchen, on 8th and 10th September

It was a rare opportunity for 5 visiting young people from Sunrise to participate in a unique cooking fundraiser in Sydney organised by

supporter Sue Liu (pictured below with Waew and Geraldine) at Our Big Kitchen in Bondi. People travelled from all over the country to

meet Geraldine and the kids and to cook together to feed Sydney’s homeless. It was the kids who stole people’s hearts when they

introduced themselves and sang a Cambodian song, with Waew explaining to everyone what life is like at Sunrise.

Watch this beautiful moment here: http://youtube/Rd-3FyWbQtU

The two groups collectively raised over $5,000 and

prepared 770 meals (430 on Sunday and 340 on

Tuesday). The food was distributed to Chapel by the

Sea, Jewish Crisis Centre and to families at the

Brightside Gala Event

The girls from Project Brightside hosted a Gala Dinner on 27 July at The Kirribilli Club

in Sydney proudly supporting Sunrise Children’s Villages. It was a fabulous night en-

joyed by all with the event raising $32,000. The generous donations of supporters

created the Project Brightside Scholarship Fund which will provide living assistance for young Sunrise adults studying at university in Australia, who gain valuable career and

life skills which they take back to Cambodia. The Project Brightside girls thank all at-

tendees and generous supporters of the evening and look forward to doing it all again next year!

Project Brightside’s mission is to be the change they want to see in this world, and the

next generation of Brightsiders are living this mission with some inspiring young la-

dies from Boronia Park Public School - Lucy, her sister Bella, along with friends, Maya

and Charlie – recently spent several days during their school holidays baking and sell-

ing cupcakes and raised $78 for the children at Sunrise.

Macquarie Cycle for Sunrise

Macquarie Martin Place staff recently held a sta-

tionary bike challenge. Four teams each comprised

four senior representatives who pedalled for 15

minutes in total over the 60 minute challenge. The

team which pedalled the furthest AND raised the

most money was the winner.

All funds raised were matched by the Macquarie

Group Foundation, achieving a wonderful total of

approximately $54,000! Congratulations and

many thanks to all the cyclists.

I did a project on inequality in the world, I decided that I should do some-thing about the inequality in the world so I decided to hold a bake sale and

an art exhibition to raise money for your orphanage with my 9 year old

brother Jeremy, my 6 year old sister Sarah and our friends Grace, Harry

and Patrick helped us to cook things to sell at our bake sale. We raised

$690.35 to help you continue with your theatre program.

We hope this helps you. …… Kind regards, Joseph Ninio Joseph with family and friends

and Cate Fowler, the producer of

Cambodian Sun Rising.
