Greetings Friends, Old & new:

Welcome to our twelfth season of Sunset Presents. We are excited to present one of our most diverse seasons to date! From Bollywood music and dance to Haitian pop; comedic cabaret to stunt dogs; podcasts to Shakespeare; and everything in between, we truly offer something for everyone. We have also planned several event-related activities to further enhance your overall experience at Sunset Center.

Help us kick off our season with celebrity talent Jane Lynch and enjoy a pre-show reception with complimentary champagne and chocolates. Indulge in a family-style Indian feast before the dazzling Bollywood Masala Orchestra and Dancers of India. Adopt an adorable rescue pooch while attending Stunt Dog Experience. Get out your boogie shoes and join us under the disco ball for a little dancing prior to Night Fever: The Bee Gees Tribute. Stroll through our World Bazaar for intriguing trinkets and bites on your way to globalFEST. Come talk political shop with local representatives prior to Capitol Steps. Our goal is to brighten your lives as we provide opportunities to engage you more deeply with the performing arts!

Also, my personal “must not miss list” for this season includes the distinctive and soulful singer, Michael McDonald; a return engagement with the ever-thrilling MOMIX in their new program Alchemia; Australian superstars The TEN Tenors holiday show; ukulele sensation Jake Shimabukuro; and finally, performing for our Fourth Annual Gala on May 14 and closing out our season, the ambassador of the great American songbook, Michael Feinstein in a Sinatra Centennial Celebration.

As you spend time with us this season, please consider further supporting the many ways we enhance the community through the performing arts. Your participation in our Bravo! membership program, a donation to Classroom Connections, attendance at our Annual Gala, or the purchase of a theater seat enables us to close the gap between ticket sales and expenses and keeps this beautiful facility vibrant and full of life for all who visit.

Our hard-working board and staff are truly grateful for your support. enjoy the show!

Sincerely,

Christine Sandin, executive Director

Reduced Shakespeare Company: The Complete History of Comedy (abridged)

they’ve skewered history, the Bible, and the world’s most celebrated playwright. now, reduced Shakespeare Company tackles the subject it was born to reduce. From the high-brow to the low, The Complete History of Comedy (abridged) covers comedy through the ages, from Shakespeare and Moliere (Is Moliere funny? Why not?) to Vaudeville and Charlie Chaplin to The Daily Show and Anthony Weiner. From cavemen telling “rock rock” jokes to Chris rock and everything in between, the bad boys of abridgment leave no joke untold as they deconstruct the entire history of comedy in 90 rollicking minutes.

Since its pass-the-hat origins in 1981, the reduced Shakespeare Company has created nine world-renowned stage shows, two television specials, several failed tV pilots, and numerous radio pieces. the company’s itinerary has included stops off-Broadway, at the White House, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, London’s West end, Seattle repertory theatre, American repertory theatre, and Montreal’s famed Just For Laughs Festival, as well as performances all over the world. The Smithereens: Songs From The Who, Excerpts From

Tommy & The Smithereens Greatest Hitsthe Smithereens’ three-decade history is a story of substance, integrity, and persistence triumphing over shallow artifice and transient trendiness—of hard-working underdogs achieving success on their own terms by sticking to their guns and ignoring the dictates of pop fashion and music industry convention. In this unique show, The Smithereens deliver excerpts from Tommy, the greatest rock opera of all time, play fan favorites by the Who, and perform hits from their own storied career, delivering their timeless brand of punchy, heartfelt rock ‘n’ roll with as much fire as ever.

the Smithereens were already a seasoned live act by the time they achieved surprise commercial success in 1986 with their first full album especially for You, which spawned the MtV hits “Blood and roses” and “Behind the Wall of Sleep.”the band continued to reap considerable airplay, critical acclaim and fan loyalty with subsequent albums which yielded such enduring numbers as “Only a Memory,” “House We used to Live In,” “Drown in My Own tears” and “A Girl Like You.”

Pete Seeger: The Storm KingPete Seeger: The Storm King honors the late Pete Seeger (1919-2014). the project presents his words in his own recorded voice and is set to live music and video based on the Grammy®-nominated audio project by world-renowned percussionist and producer, Jeff Haynes. new compositions from diverse musical traditions including blues, bluegrass, classical guitar, folk, jazz, and native American music paint an evocative aural backdrop for Pete Seeger’s most engaging stories, narratives, and poems reflecting his lifelong dedication to human rights, environmental issues, and his boundless hope for humanity.

Each piece of the project is unique in sound and emotion, and also in how it came together. Working closely for over 5 years prior to Seeger’s passing in 2014, Haynes and Seeger created something spectacular by setting Seeger’s text to the music of artists from around the world who have been deeply influenced by him. the result is astounding.

Binge-Worthy Journalism: Backstage with the Creators of SERIAL, Sarah Koenig & Julie Snyder

Co-created in fall 2014 by veteran radio journalists and producers Sarah Koenig and Julie Snyder, Serial has quickly become the most popular podcast in the world. In 2014, Slate headlined the story “Serial is Like nothing I’ve ever Heard or Watched Before.” Buzzfeed wrote “Serial is the year’s best new crime drama (and it’s not on tV).” The New Yorker called Serial “the podcast we’ve been waiting for.” At a time when being first and being fast dominates the media, and quick sound bites are offered at every turn, Serial did exactly the opposite: in Season One, it presented a 12-part series centering on one legal case, taking its time and proving that slow-motion journalism could captivate and sustain its vast listenership. In their live presentation, Sarah Koenig and Julie Snyder will take the audience backstage for an overview of this cultural phenomenon.

Julie Snyder, senior producer of This American Life (TAL), began working at the radio show in 1997—almost from its inception—and along with host Ira Glass, has set the editorial agenda for the program, winning four Peabody awards along the way. In 2004, Sarah Koenig became a producer of TAL. Koenig has also guest hosted TAL several times, most memorably for the “no Coincidence, no Story” show.

together since 1981, the Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom (“Don’t quit your day job!”) and taken together, the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience. Some have worked for Democrats, some for republicans, and others for politicians who firmly straddle the fence. no matter who holds office, there’s never a shortage of material! Sunset Center produces an arts-in-education program called Classroom Connections which brings our featured performers to regional schools. This is a unique and comprehensive program that engages the youth of our region in a series of workshops and performances designed to foster imagination, confidence, and a sense of possibility. Our program is uniquely in-depth and has been designed to involve students on an actively engaged level. We have developed a rigorous and exciting 4-part program where teachers and artists work with students classroom by classroom. By working in individual classrooms, teachers and artists have more time to devote to children on an interactive, individual level, in an atmosphere where students feel comfortable.

Since 2008, we have worked with nearly 10,000 students, and our artists are as diverse as our students! We program nationally touring artists in disciplines like modern dance, jazz, ballet, improv comedy, theatre, mariachi, vaudeville, and more! Our students range from kindergarten to high school and special needs to at-risk, throughout Monterey County. Best of all? All of these opportunities are offered at no cost to the students, parents, or schools.

For more information about Classroom Connections, please contact our Outreach Department at 831.620.2077.
