DIRECTOR ’S NOTES

Every play has something to offer an audience be it a great Drama, a Musical, a Classic or a light Romantic Comedy. My job as Director is to deliver the message of the playwright with as much clarity as I can find within the text and adding my own nuances to make the piece the kind of theatre I feel the audiences will enjoy the most. YOU CAN’T GET THERE FROM HERE is neither a Drama, Musical or a Classic, but is a Romantic Comedy with a very strong feel of the great Situation Comedies of the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. The story is light but intriguing, silly but funny, and short and sweet. The scenes flow effortlessly without pause, and reading the scripts I got the feeling a commercial break would fit in nicely between them. That’s where I got the idea to insert different theme songs from these classic shows in between the scenes of this play, and to imply that this play is in fact a situation comedy not unlike the ones we fell in love with, Oh so many years ago!!!! So here’s to the memory of Mayberry, I love Lucy, Mr. Ed, Green Acres, The Beverly Hillbillies, Bewitched, and all the rest! Thanks for all the hours of fun..... You may not be on TV any more, but The Situation Comedy is alive and well here on The Sunset Stage tonight!!! Janet Balson (Queenie)Janet is thrilled to be doing her first show at Sunset. Janet was seen most recently in NOISES OFF at Bay

Players. She has performed exten-sively in the Rock County area – some favorite roles include Miss Prism in THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ERNEST and Madame Arcati in BLITHE SPIRIT and Ella in SPITFIRE GRILL. Janet wants to thank Daisy and Onslow for their love and affection.

Gladys Chmiel(Liz)Gladys is happy to be back at Sunset in this delightful production with this delightful cast

and crew! She sends her thanks and love to Elaine and all for another wonderful stage experience. Previ-ous appearances here include Betty Meeks in THE FOREIGNER, Fraulein Schneider in CABARET, and Veta Lou-ise in HARVEY. Gladys is honored to have performed with many theatre companies in the Milwaukee area, most recently onstage experience was Anfisa in THREE SISTERS with Windfall Ensemble. She was also just seen in Mary Sweeney’s independent film, “Baraboo” at the Milwaukee Film Festival. Following this run, she will be in the staged reading of ALL FOR LOVE with Goats & Monkeys. For Michael, as always!

J. Michael Desper (Technical Director)J. Michael Desper has designed over 70 productions for Sunset Playhouse since the summer of 2001.

Previously he freelanced in Chicago for such companies as Circle Theatre of Forest Park, Pendulum Theatre, and Bowen Park Theatre and Opera. Before that, he earned his Master’s degree at San Diego State University and worked for the Tony Award-winning La Jolla Playhouse. Originally from Oklahoma, Michael earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma. In spring 2008, he briefly returned to educational theatre with a stint as Guest Artist and Instructor for North Dakota State University. He would like to extend an invitation to anyone interested in the technical aspects of theatre (and since you have read this far, there must be some interest) to give us a call at (262) 782-4431, ext. 235. We’re already working on the next show, so come be a part of what you see.

Cheryl Figueroa (Stage Manager)Cheryl is thrilled to be at Sunset Playhouse this fall in the position of stage manager. Currently

a junior at Wisconsin Lutheran College pursuing a Communicative Arts major and a Theatre minor, she was recently seen on stage at WLC for THE AMERI-CAN CLOCK and CURSE OF AN ACHING HEART. Cheryl also dabbles in other technical work there. Cheryl would like to thank everyone in this produc-tion and especially Mark Salentine for welcoming her into the company. Pat Cook has been writing since his boyhood days in Frankston, Texas. Since then he has written for educational radio, television, and night clubs. His first play was published by The Dramatic Publishing Company in 1976. Pat now has over fifty published plays, and has recently been involved with “Audience-Participation Mur-der Mysteries” produced in and around Houston, where he and his wife reside.

Anthony Mackie (Hair Stylist/ Wig Master)A New York native, Anthony began his stage acting career at age five and his

musical career at seven. At 15, he was accepted to the Stone Cameren, Ruth Page Ballet Company in Chicago. Two years later he returned to New York where he joined a ballet company and took up cosmetology. Due to a knee injury and surgery, Anthony started a new career in Milwaukee as a hair styl-ist and wigist for most of the theatres in the region. He has also been a director and choreographer.

Elaine Parsons-Herro (Director)Elaine is thrilled to be making her direc-torial debut here at the Sunset Play-house. After running

Broadway Baby dinner theatre with her late business partner John Bohan for 19 years, Elaine finally has the time to branch out and work at new venues in Milwaukee. The Sunset Playhouse is definitely one of her favorites! You may remember her from MURDER AT THE HOWARD JOHNSON’S performed on this stage about four years ago. She’s also worked at many other theatres in town including The Skylight, First Stage, M and W Classic Children’s The-atre and The Fireside to name a few. Born and raised in New York, Elaine is trained in dance, but her first love is acting and now directing. As long as she’s in a theatre, she’s happy! Many thanks to Mark and Jonathan and

Jan Szczepanski (Stage Manager)Jan has been active at Sunset Playhouse since the summer of 1984 when she appeared in FIDDLER

ON THE ROOF. Although she has only appeared on the Sunset stage in 4 other shows since that time, she has ex-perienced virtually every other aspect of the theater. She served six years as the Stage Management Chairperson and served two terms as a member of the Board of Directors. She was Chair-man of the Volunteer Committee and is currently the Co-Chairman of the Sun-set Playhouse Volunteer Choice Awards. Jan is also proud to say that she is a recipient of the Rudy Award (Sunset’s equivalent of the Volunteer of the Year) and was recently named a Life Member of Sunset Playhouse! You too could be-come a Life Member – just come on out and volunteer – and keep volunteering for 26 years – because sometimes “YOU CAN GET THERE FROM HERE”!

Clive and David Rodingham, after inheriting the family fortune, meet Charles and his wife Julie, a

would-be thriller writer. Charles encourages David, who is also a writer, to co-author a murder story with Julie. It isn’t long before the two concoct the perfect

crime, which is soon twisted into a reality. Full of clues, hints, deeds, and misdeeds, this ingenious play from one of the most successful thriller writers of all time (Wait Until Dark, Dial M For Murder) sets forth a “perfect crime” with such diabolical cleverness that

audiences will be kept guessing until the final curtain.

Milwaukee he comes fresh out of school at Columbia College Chicago where he majored in Lighting Design while obtaining a minor in music. Some design credits include COLORED MUSEUM, BAT BOY, BURIED CHILD, MEMORY OF TWO MONDAYS, WHERE’S MY MONEY, WAITING FOR GODOT, LADY OF THE SEA, BLOOD WEDDING, and INTERIORS. Both a fan of behind stage and onstage, Mattisson is look-ing forward to working with such a kind and welcoming team at the Sunset Playhouse.

Marty Wallner (Lighting Designer)For the past 36 years, HERE for Marty has been the Sunset Playhouse. He has designed

lighting for shows too numerous to mention as well as participating in nearly every other aspect of the Sun-set. When not HERE, Marty spends time THERE, at H&R Block where he is currently an instructor and will return this winter as a Master Tax Adviser. Marty spends the rest of his time in a state of quantum flux and has no need to get there from here.

Jessie Weber (Ann) Jessie is exited to be making her debut with the Sunset Play-house. Favorite roles elsewhere include

Diana, in LEND ME A TENOR, Myra, in DEATHTRAP, Belinda, in SEASON’S GREET-INGS, and Annelle, in STEEL MAGNOLIAS. After ten years of being home in “Mom World”, It feels so good to be back on stage. Thanks, Bobbie!

Props The prop hands for “YOU CAN’T GET THERE FROM HERE” mysteriously appeared during rehearsals and we can only assume it has

something to do with Pinky and Roger. Thank you to whoever is responsible for giving the actors something to carry around on-stage because reading “pretend newspapers” and lifting “pretend suitcases” just looks plain silly.

On a side note, properties design is quite fun if you like a good scavenger hunt. So, if you want to give it a try, please stop by the box office and ask for a volunteer application. We’re sure Pinky and Roger would love to have some help!

The Sunset Playhouse is located in the heart of downtown Elm Grove at 800 Elm Grove Road.

BOX OFFICE is open from 1:00pm to 5:00pm, Tuesday through Friday and 1:00pm to 4:00pm, Saturdays. The Box Office is open one hour prior to any performance through intermission. The Box Office can be reached at (262) 782-4430.

BUSINESS OFFICE is open from 10:00am to 5:00pm, Monday though Friday. It can be reached by calling (262) 782-4431 ext. 221.

TICKETS can be purchased in person during our above Box Office hours using cash, check, Visa or Mastercard. Tickets can be purchased over the phone using a credit card; please be aware that there is a $1 per ticket fee for all phone, mail, and fax orders. All sales are final. Exchanges must be done in advance and must be made for a different performance of the same show. Prices for the 2010-2011 Season have changed and are as follows:

Comic zingers and a trio of singers make this witty musical about the perils of modern love a lyrical winner. Old school chums Milt and Harry bump into each other on the Brooklyn Bridge one day. Milt has grown weary of married life; Harry admits times have been so tough that he’s going to jump off the bridge and end it all. When Milt’s wife Ellen shows up, a reversal of fortunes and partners happens with madcap musical results.
