Mobile Engineering Center
SunSource MEC StandardsMEC History
The Mobile Engineering Center (MEC) was conceived in 1979 as a technical resource for J. N. Fauver Company sales people. Starting with one Application Engineer, its purpose was to assist with the application of hydraulic components, mainly hydrostatic transmissions.
Shortly after, a partnership with Sterling Hydraulics was formed and Fauver became their first US distributor. Taking full advantage of the benefits a cartridge valve system can offer, such as a consolidated, leak-free system, was difficult without specific knowledge and resources dedicated to the design and manufacturing of the manifold bodies. Engineering focus was quickly shifted to meet this demand and MEC was born.
The first manifolds were designed as standard products, typically to complement high pressure hydrostatic transmissions. By 1983 MEC was producing custom manifolds, tailored specifically to individual customer needs. Custom valve packages were a relatively new concept and machine shops experienced with manufacturing manifold bodies were rare. Fauver partnered with Vector Engineering (also known as Source Fluid Power) to produce manifolds. MEC offices were located within Vector until 1984 when the first Fauver Service and Repair Center was built in Bloomington, MN, and large enough to house both operations.
MEC grew from a regional support group in the 1980's to covering most of North America with the integration of Fauver into the SunSource network in the late 1990's. The drafting tables initially used to design manifolds were replaced with computers and CAD software. 2D CAD systems were upgraded to 3D wire frame designs and ultimately 3D solid models. Each software package was heavily customized to better accommodate designing manifolds. In the early 1990's an electronics group was formed within MEC to focus on the ever-expanding use of electronics in the mobile market. By 2000, operations had expanded again to include custom reservoirs and sectional valves.
Currently headquartered out of the SunSource Mobile Technology Systems facility in Savage, MN, MEC has a staff dedicated to assist with the specification, design, purchasing and production of manifolds, reservoirs, sectional valves, electronics, and other assemblies. MEC is both ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001 certified.
As the mobile hydraulics market has grown and matured, MEC has also changed to stay ahead of the times. Our lifeblood is adding value to our customer's products. We continue to look for innovative ways to apply the products and services that SunSource has to offer.

Loop Flush
DescriptionFV-9315 is a loop flushing manifold used to remove hot oil from the low side of a hydrostatic system to provide cooling and fresh oil circulation. To provide loop flush while in neutral a shuttle with the "bleed" option should be used. This will allow warm oil to circulate through this manifold even when the pump is in neutral. Flushing oil from this assembly can also be run into the case of a motor to provide additional temperature equalization. This option is mainly used when thermal shock is a concern.

SET TO 250 PSIBLEED SPOOL IN NEUTRAL
A note about the valve setting:The above chart indicates that when requesting a valve set to 250 PSI it will meet this pressure at approximately 3 GPM with the shuttle shifted. Changes in charge flow due to engine RPM or accessory functions will cause the pressure to change in accordance with this chart.
Frequently we are asked about how to increase the flow through the flushing portion of the manifold. This is simply a balancing act between this valve and the pump charge relief. Oil will go the path of least resistance, so to increase the flow, decrease the pressure setting of this valve. If charge pressure droops too low, then both the pump and this remote relief will have to be adjusted up in unison.
Note too that if a high flush (say 10 GPM) is achieved at full RPM, charge pressure at idle may droop substantially. Please review all components in the system to ensure that the charge pressure range is adequate.

Loop Flush w/ Reliefs
DescriptionFV-5142 is a high pressure, high flow, loop flush and cross-over relief manifold. Originally designed to be used with Rotary Power motors, this manifold can also be used as a stand-alone assembly. When used with a Rotary Power motor the shuttle with the "bleed" option should be used so that the motor case is flushed even when the system is in neutral. This will help decrease the thermal shock at the motor by allowing it to warm up with the system. Many options are available, such as anti-cavitation.

Traction Control
DescriptionFV-5800 is a high pressure traction control manifold. Motors which will be controlled by this package should NOT have built in loop flushing! If loop flushing is desired, a seperate flushing manifold should be placed between the pump and this block. When vented, bypass valves will open with charge pressure to allow flow in either direction. Loss of charge pressure will prevent the bypass valves from venting open and allowing flow from A1/A2 to PA/PB. Should this occur, the charge system should be inspected immediately. Low charge pressure will not damage this assembly, but could harm other components.

Traction PackageSolenoid valve is normally open, allowing the bypass valves to open. The orifice (ORF) will allow some oil to leak between ports "A1" and "A2" so
that the machine can turn.

Remote venting can be done with an external valve, be sure that the valve is rated to full system pressure. Schematic shows the "ORF" option
plugged for a very limited slip. With this option the machine may stall when driving on dry pavement, even when driven straight. Note the position of the loop flushing valve- it cannot be tied to "A1" or "A2".

Circuit Selector
DescriptionFV-7371 is a high pressure, high flow, circuit selector manifold. Through the use of multiple cartridges it duplicates the function of a 2 position 6 way valve. Both open and closed shift transitions are available. If a closed transition is selected a momentary pressure spike should be expected in system pressure and appropriate relief accomodations should be made for both the pump and the actuator. If a high flow pilot source (>5 GPM & >1000 PSI) will be utilized, an orifice fitting should be considered in the "P" port to prevent overflowing the pilot solenoid valve and causing it to hang-up.

High Flow Directional ValveMultiple open and closed loop functions can be accomplished by tying ports together. Note that while an open transition valve is shifting, it will
momentarily dump system flow to tank, possibly decreasing the available pilot pressure to complete the shift. In this case a closed
transition spool should be considered. Simplified symbols are shown below.
Circuit Selector- HydrostaticUsed to select between two functions, typically between a ground drive and another function
which will never be used simultaneously.
Circuit Selector- Open LoopUsed to select between two functions, either cylinders or motors, which will never be used
simultaneously. Shown with an external orifice to prevent overflowing the pilot valve (not supplied). A closed transition valve should be considered.

Cross-Over Relief
DescriptionFV-9396-_RD_RD_ is a cross-over relief valve. The direct acting cartridge valve utilized in this assembly is fast acting with a relatively low pressure rise curve. Direct acting valves are simpler in construction and less costly to manufacture than pilot operated valves. They can be somewhat noisier than pilot operated valves, and if higher flows and smooth, quiet relieving are necessary then an FV-9396-_RP_RP pilot operated version should be considered.

Unloading Relief
DescriptionFV-9396-_RP_U is relief valve and solenoid valve in parallel. Typically used with a normally open solenoid valve, this assembly will build system pressure only when the solenoid valve is energized. This is often used to unload gear or other open center pumps. A normally closed version is also available that might be used in fail-safe situations where a bypass is required for efficiency but will fail to full pressure should an electrical problem occur.

DescriptionFV-9020-_RU is a high flow ventable relief valve. This assembly includes features to create a small delay in the closing of the relief valve (see chart, below) to create a very smooth and stable valve, and reduces the water hammer effect common on most other systems. This type of valve is commonly used in a gear or other fixed displacement pump to unload it when work functions are not being run.

Ventable ReliefSystem consists of a logic element unloaded via
a solenoid valve and a pilot relief to limit the maximum pressure. The pilot solenoid and relief
valves shown are drained internally.
Relief With External DrainA seperate drain allows the valve to operate at a consistant pressure regardless of backpressure
at port 2. Relief should be vented when directional valve is not being used.
No SolenoidRemoving the solenoid makes the assembly a large pilot operated relief valve. This example
also shows the external vent being used in conjunction with a panel mounted relief for
frequent adjustments.

Proportional Relief- HighThe system will act as a normally closed
proportional relief valve, decreasing pressure with increasing current. This is ideal for fan
circuits where the fan will fail to full speed should there be an electrical failure.
External Anti-CavThe addition of the anti-cav check at the motor will reduce cavitation at the motor should the
engine stop with the fan at full RPM.
Soft-Shift System Relief- HighThis assembly can also be used as a soft-shift relief with an added soft-shift DIN mounted or
in-line controller. In the event of an electrical or controller failure the system will default to max
pressure, allowing work to continue.

Single Load Holding
DescriptionFV-9171 is a line body for use with T-11A (Sun) load holding and other valves. This body is physically interchangeable with the Sun ECJ body and includes plating for additional corrosion resistance. In general, load control valves are preferred over P.O. checks for their stability and built in thermal relief characteristics. Some experimentation with valve ratios and settings may be required in any new application. To improve stability at the sacrifice of efficiency, use a lower ratio valve. Do not cross over an existing valve without testing the application first as each brand of valve may behave differently even in the same application.

OTHER FUNCTIONSBecause FV-9171 is a single cavity,
any valve fitting the T-11A cavity can be utilized. Common
applications are pilot to close checks, hi-lo unloading valves,
accumulator unloading valves, and other options. Contact MEC for
more information.
P.O. CHECKWhen work flows do not change,
such as when using a fixed displacement pump and an on/off
directional valve, then a P.O. check can be considered. However, unlike a load control valve, the P.O. check
will not relieve with thermal expansion. If in doubt, apply a load
control valve insead of a P.O. check.

Seals on the pilot can cause some of the internal parts to slightly stick, sometimes leading to instability. Generally seals are not desired unless leakage from the pilot side of the circuit into the valve side needs to be minimized for some reason.
An anti-cavitation check is generally used in a motor
circuit so that when the directional valve is in
neutral the motor can spin down for a moment,
pulling oil across one of the check valves to keep
it flooded with oil.
Use a lower ratio for finer control, but with less efficiency (more pressure drop). Generally 4.5:1 and less for cylinders, and higher for motors. When in doubt, select the lower ratio.
