CONTENTS
Letter from the SunTrust Foundation PresidentThank you for your interest in the SunTrust Foundation. We had an incredible year in 2016, and we’re proud to present the work we’ve done to help build financial confidence in our communities.
In fact, focusing our giving on programs and organizations that advance financial well-being is a primary emphasis for the Foundation. While we’ve always been committed to SunTrust Bank’s purpose of Lighting the Way to Financial Well-Being, we made the strategic decision in 2016 to allocate an even greater amount of our grants to initiatives that bring this purpose to life.
For example, we supported programs and partnerships that promoted financial education, financial counseling, career readiness and small business entrepreneurship. We believe these areas help foster the very building blocks that lead to financial confidence: the knowledge of financial basics, the skills to prepare for the workforce, and the tools to start or grow a business.
Here are a few highlights. In 2016, the SunTrust Foundation:• Rolled out the MySmartMoney online financial portal in partnership with United Way Worldwide. • Gave a multi-year grant to Operation HOPE to digitize and expand the reach of its learning curriculum.• Announced the grand opening of the SunTrust Foundation Financial Wellness Clinic at Florida International University.
• Partnered with Autism Speaks to create a Financial Planning Tool Kit for families with special needs children.• Presented our inaugural Lighting the Way Awards to eight deserving nonprofits for the positive impact they made building financial confidence in their communities.
• Convened thought leaders for our first-ever Financial Well-Being Summit in partnership with PricewaterhouseCoopers.• Provided financial relief for tragedies and natural disasters, including the Pulse nightclub shooting, Hurricane Matthew, Tennessee fires and Georgia tornadoes.
While focusing on advancing financial well-being remains a priority for us, we also continued our support of local community organizations that help better people’s lives. In total, our efforts contributed $16.6 million in 2016 to our communities—the most in the SunTrust Foundation’s history.
I’ve always believed to whom much is given, much is required. Holding true to this principle has guided us to give back in meaningful ways. We look forward to building upon our momentum, continuing our progress and helping everyone on their path to financial confidence.
My best,
David Fuller, PresidentSunTrust Foundation

PARTNERSHIPS8
National Partnerships for Financial Well-Being

Operation HOPEThe SunTrust Foundation gave Operation HOPE a $950,000 grant to help scale and expand the organization’s global impact with digital access to its financial literacy and economic empowerment programs. These efforts included the translation of program content into multiple languages to serve participants who do not speak English.
United WayOne of SunTrust Bank and SunTrust Foundation’s core partnerships each year is with United Way. Both the Bank and the Foundation are designated as United Way Global Corporate Leaders and through donations, contributions from SunTrust Bank teammates and retirees, and volunteer hours, the impact we make on communities and people is far reaching. In 2016, the Foundation gave $2.98 million, SunTrust Bank retiree contributions and fundraisers totaled $276,000, and SunTrust Bank teammates donated $6.5 million. Our work also became even more targeted and effective as the Foundation partnered with United Way to create the MySmartMoney portal, a web-based resource for financial education materials, and funded research and curriculum.
American Red CrossMore than 18,000 homes across the Southeast were affected by Hurricane Matthew. For weeks after the storm, the American Red Cross aided people with food, shelter and recovery. In support of those efforts, the SunTrust Foundation gave $250,000.
The SunTrust Foundation’s support of philanthropic efforts spans across the nation.
The organizations we partnered with in 2016 are as dedicated to helping people achieve
financial confidence as we are.
