SUNWISE, CRICKET’S LEADING BRANDOF EYEWEAR FOR UMPIRES

UMPIRES - EYE PROTECTION EDUCATION As an Umpire, we know that you and your colleagues are some of the most important component parts of being able to play cricket, and without your efforts the game as we know it would be very different indeed.

The ECB ACO confirms that over 7,000 of you are registered with them, officiating club games at weekends and also turning out during the week for local Cricket Boards, Schools and Universities.

As an award winning provider of eye-protection, Sunwise want to help you and your colleagues to be more aware of the harmful effects that taking to the field can have on your eyes, so we’ve produced the following information to help you to understand the risks and to allow you to make an informed decision whenever you take to the field in the future.

WHY YOU SHOULD PROTECT YOUR EYES AND THE EFFECTS OF THE SUN?Umpires will spend more time on the field of play than any of the two sides involved in any match, potentially up to 7 hours per match, including the peak period for UV radiation between 10am to 4pm, which means that your risks of exposure to Ultra Violet (UV) radiation is considered to be high.

Studies have shown that by the age of 60, you will have been exposed to 90% of your lifetime UV damage which can sometimes result in UV related conditions such as, Cataracts and Age-related Macular degeneration (AMD). In severe cases this can result in cancer of the eye, eyelid and surrounding area.

All three of these conditions can cause loss of vision and therefore the ability to be able to participate in the game.

It is important to know that UV rays aren’t only present when it is sunny, they are present all year round in both strong and low sunlight, therefore as an umpire it is crucial you keep your eyes protected during all weather conditions when taking to the field.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO PREVENT THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF THE SUN?We all regularly apply sun tan lotion to our skin to protect from burning when going out in the sun, the same should apply to how we protect our eyes, the simple solution is to wear sunglasses which offer the protection you need to avoid damage to the eyes.

The ECB ACO tell us that currently, the average age of an umpire is 61 years old, so many umpires will require prescription sunglasses which will not only offer protection from the sun but will also allow normal vision in all light conditions.

Our aim at Sunwise is to make sure that all umpires are aware of the need keep their eyes protected when out in the field.

All of our lenses offer leading protection from UV rays, including our prescription lenses.

By simply adding Sunwise sunglasses to your kit, you can safely protect your eyes from the sun, increase your enjoyment of the game and to be more confident with the decisions you make. Overall we’d call that a win win for cricket all round.

Sunwise Sunglasses come in three lens types, Photochromic, Polarised, Interchangeable and each of our lens types can be glazed with the required prescription if required.
