    Summary:TheSUNYCortlandResidenceHallAssociationandNationalResidenceHallHonoraryhave

    individuallygrownandimprovedrapidlyoverthepasttwoyears.RHAhasestablished

    annualprogramsandalsohavestartedtoinitiateadvocacyissuesintheresidencehallsand

    aroundcampustomakethelivingcommunityabetterplace.NRHHhasalsomadegreat

    stridesintheirorganization.Theyhavehadafullchapterforthepasttwoyearsandcontinue

    toequallyuseeachofthefourpillarsintheirorganization.AttheendoftheyearRHAand

    NRHHmettodiscusshowthingscouldbebetterfortheyeartocome.Werealizedthatwe

    hadtoworktogetherlikethesisterorganizationsweare.Startingwiththeexecutiveboards,

    weknewworkingtogethersidebysidewouldbenefitbothRHAandNRHHeventhoughwe

    weredifferentorganizations.Themaingoalofbothorganizationswastoinstillleadershipin

    eachoneoftheirmembers.Afterrevampingoldleadershiptrainingandimplementingnew

    ones,RHAandNRHHwantedtoensurethatthemembersofeachorganizationbecame

    effectiveleadersandwantedtomakeadifferenceonourcampus.Mostimportantlywe

    wantedthemtounderstandthattheseorganizationswouldntbeheretodayifitwasntfor

    leadershipbecauseRHAandNRHHrunonleadership!

    SUNY Cortland Campus

    State University of New YorkCollege at Cortland:In1848SUNYCortlandwasknownastheCortland

    NormalSchool.Overtime,thecampuseventually

    grewandin1948itofficiallybecameknownasthe

    StateUniversityofNewYorkCollegeatCortland.

    Thereareapproximately7,300undergraduatestudents

    pursuingdegreeswithintheCollegesthreeacademic

    divisions,alongwithtwenty-eightacademicdepartments,which

    offertheSUNYCortlandstudentbodyaselectionof63majorsand44

    minorstochoosefrom.SnuggledintothehillsofbeautifulCentralNew

    York,Cortlandiswellknownforitsexcellenceinteachereducation,andis

    aprominentleaderinphysicaleducationteachercertificationandsportmanagement.

    NotonlyisSUNYCortlandcontinuingtogrow

    inacademics,Cortlandisalsoboominginthe

    residentialcommunity.

    Withapproximately3,600residents,therehas

    beena10-yearplanwithintheSUNYCortland

    ResidentialLifeandHousingDepartmentworkingto

    improveeachofthe15residencehallseveryyear.

    WhileCortlandisasmallandquietcommunity,the

    stronginvolvementofstudentsinRHAandNRHHhas

    workedtogiveourcampusfun,excitingoptionsto

    supplementthelackofpossibilitiesinthe

    surroundingarea.

    heResidenceHallAssociation(RHA)istheorganizationoncampusthatstrivesto

    mprovetheresidencehallcommunityandon-campusliving.Thisorganization

    ngagesresidentstogetinvolvedincampus-wideprograms;initiate

    dvocacyissuesoncampusandwithintheresidencehallsandcreates

    eadershipopportunitiesforresidents.SUNYCortlandsRHAwasinactive

    rom1989to2006untilonestudent,JohnRudenko,andoneadvisor,Cheri

    kipworthre-instatedRHAandaffiliateditatMiniNo-Frillsin2007.Sincethen,

    heorganizationhasgrownintooneofthelargeststudentrunorganizationsoncampus,

    ehindonlytheStudentGovernmentAssociation.OurRHAconsistsofbothstudent

    taffmembersandresidentswholiveoncampus.Eachresidencehallhastheirownhall

    ouncil,whichisresponsibleforputtingprogramsonforresidentsintheirindividualhall.

    Overtheyears,thecontinuedinvolvementofstudentslivingoncampushasincreased

    remendouslyandtherehasbeenarecentpushofenthusiasmtomakeour

    rganizationabetterone.

    NRHH Rho Delta Chapter:TheNationalResidenceHallHonoraryontheSUNY

    CortlandcampusallstartedfromoneOTM.AfterbeingrecognizedwithanOTMforResidentAssistant

    ofthemonthbyherhalldirector,AshleyHudson

    decidedshewantedtoimplementNRHHchapteron

    ourcampus,becauseshelovedgettingrecognizedand

    wantedtosharethatfeelingwiththeentirecampus.

    CheriSkipworthandAshleystartedacommitteeinthe

    Springof2007toseeifwewantedtobringachapter

    tocampus.Afterfinishingtheconstitution,theystartedrecruitingmembersatthe

    beginningofFall2007.InOctober2007,theyinductedtheAlphaclassofabout30

    members.ThenewNRHHwantedtorecognizethoseleaderswhodothingsoutsidetheirjobsandwhatsrequiredofthemwhilealsoexcellingatschool(scholarship).

    Theyalsowantedtheprogrammingfocusedmoreonservice.Theorganizationhas

    continuedtogrowandexpandoverthepastfewyears,expandingbeyondjust

    studentstaffmemberstootherleadersoncampus.Instillingthefour

    pillarsintheorganizationhasbeenaconstantgoalof

    NRHHoverthepastfewyears,aswellascreatingprogramtraditions

    withintheorganization,andfindingnewandcreative

    waystorecognize.History of Leadership Training on Campus:

    RHAandNRHHhavehistoricallyhadseparatetrainingsfortheirorganizations.RHAhostsa

    LeadershipNightatthefirstgeneralbodymeetingofthesemester.AtLeadershipNighteach

    personlearnsandunderstandstheirrolesonhallcouncil,whilebondingwiththegeneralbody.

    ThisyearNRHHdecidedtotryadifferentformofleadershiptrainingandtaketheirchapterto

    RaquetteLakeforaretreatweekend.Usually,executiveboardsofeachgroupwouldgothrough

    separatetrainingsduringthesummer.However,thisyearwedecidedtohaveanExecutive

    BoardretreatincludingbothRHAandNRHHexecutiveboardsandgoonaleadershipretreatat

    AdamsEdenCamp.

    allowsthememberstogainthemostoutof

    theirorganization.

    thedaywithourwholegroupblindfolded,beingled

    throughobstaclesbyonememberofourgroupto

    thelocationofournextactivity.Afterwe

    completedit,wewereaskedhowwhatwemay

    havegainedfromthisactivitycouldbeappliedback

    atSUNYCortland.Thisiswhenthesisterorganizationsstartedtoreallyworktogetherasa

    team.

    Nextwedidaveryriskyexercise.Atfirstwehada

    mousetraptoourselves,hadtosetit,thenputourown

    handoverit,thenreleaseit.Thisgotustotrust

    ourselves.Thenwegotwithapartneranddidthesame

    thing,totrustoneotherperson.Thenasagroupinacircleweallhadtotrusteachotherandletgoofthe

    mousetraps.Thiswasparticularlydifficultforsome

    individualsbut,weweresupportiveofeachotherand

    alotoftrustwasbuilt.

    Wethenmovedontotwodifferentlowropescourses.Thefirst

    onegotusalltalkingandwerealizedtheimportanceof

    communicationandmakingsureeveryoneisheard,butalsothat

    sometimestoomanyconflictingopinionscanharmthegroupand

    relationships.Thesecondofthelowropescoursestestedus

    physicallyandmentally.Weencouragedeachother,offeredsupportanditwouldvebeenimpossibletomakeitthrough

    withoutverbalaffirmationsandphysicalassistance.

    Webrieflybrokeforlunch,andlotsofwater!Wethenreturnedandwentontothehighropes

    course.Therewebrokeupintotwogroups.Onewentthroughanobstaclecourse,andthe

    otherwentonazipline.Thenthegroupsswitched.Withineachgroupthereweresomewho

    stoodoutandeasilyconqueredthechallenges,butthentheyhelped,coaxedandencouraged

    theothersthroughit.Mostofuswereverytiredandwenttobedearlythatnight!

    fillingthatoutanddiscussingwithinthegrouphow

    wefeltaboutit,wecreatedacommitmenttoself

    whichincludedourgoalsforthesemester/yearasan

    organizationandaperson.

    Afterthiswemovedontopoliciesandprocedures,andthenNRHHcreatedtheirbudget,

    whileRHAhadacontinueddiscussionofpoliciesandproceduresaswellasbondingandtime

    toworkontheirE-boardbuddycraftproject(RHAhadalreadycreatedtheirbudgetoverthe

    summer).

    Afterlunchwediscussedeffectivewaystorunameeting,whichwasagoodchanceforthe

    sisterorganizationstosharethedifferentwayswedothings,buthowitmaybeeffectivein

    eitherorganization.Alsoeffectiveandcreativenewwaysofadvertisingwasdiscussed.

    TheE-boardsseparatedtocreateE-boardexpectationsfortheyearandgooverour

    constitutionandby-laws.

    Overallthistimewasusedtobetterourselvesasindividuals,getusonthesamepage,and

    makeusmoreknowledgeableaboutourpositionsandduties.

    AfterdinnertheE-boardsworkedtogethertodoa

    picturescavengerhunt(Andsincethereweretwo

    birthdaystobecelebrateditwasagoodchancetoget

    usoutofthecabinsotheadvisorscoulddecorate!).

    Thiswasarelaxingtimeforustogooutonan

    adventureandworktogetherasstudentsin

    leadershiproles.

    Welearnedmoreabouteachindividualthroughteambuildingactivities,butwewerealso

    abletoconcentrateoncollectivegoalsfortheupcomingyear.Wewereabletocreate

    expectationsofourselvestomaintainfortheyear,whichwestilllookbackonnowtomake

    surewearestayingontrack.Thiscreatesmotivationforustoliveupourleadershiproles.

    Thisretreatalsobroughtoutleaderswithinthegroupthatmaynothavenormallybeen

    recognized.Peoplewereabletoshowtheirstrengthsandhelptheothers,whomayhave

    struggled,specificallywiththephysicalchallenges.Thisgaveachanceforthemtoshine,

    gavethemconfidenceandallowedustorelyoneachothermore.Recognizingthe

    strengthsandweaknessesoftheE-boardmembersisgoodtorecognizeearlyandwe

    emphasizedaskingforhelpwhenevernecessary.Thishelpsusworkmorecohesivelyasa

    team.

    ThistripallowedustobondwithinourE-boards,RHAand

    NRHH,butalsoallowedforcommunicationbetweenthe

    twogroups.BetweenRHAandNRHH,weofferedeachotheradviceaboutwhathasworkedinwithinourspecific

    organizationsandhowittranslatestotheother

    organization.

    OurE-boardsmayhaveknowneachotherbeforethisretreat,

    itgaveusachancetorelaxawayfromSUNYCortlandandfocusoneachindividual.It

    allowedustorecognizestrengthsandweaknessesandoffersupport.Thisretreat

    wascrucialfortheE-boardsworktogetherinaneffectivemanner.Evenduring

    unscheduledtime,likebeforebed,thesleepingarrangementsallowedustostayup,talk,andgettoknoweachotherbetter.KnowingtheE-boardmembersonapersonal

    andnotjustbusinesslevelletsusworkmorecohesively.

    Purpose:TheSUNYCortlandResidenceHallAssociationhasanannualLeadershipNight.Thiseventis

    anopportunityforallthehallcouncils,fromevery

    residencehalltocometogether,minglewitheachother,

    makeconnectionsandmostimportantlylearntheir

    positionrequirementsonhallcouncil.Thiseventis

    traditionallythethirdweekofclassestoallowthe

    residencehallsenoughtimetocreateafullhallcouncil.

    Planning Progress: Inourfirstexecutiveboardmeeting,wedecidedthatLeadershipnightwas

    necessaryandfromtherewecouldstartplanningtheactivitiesandinformation

    thatwouldbegiven. Theexecutiveboarddecidedthatthisyearwewouldimplementcheatsheets

    thatthehallcouncilscouldbringbackwiththemtouseasareferencethroughout

    theyear

    Thecheatsheetsincludedinformationaboutthedutiesofeachpositionalongwiththecontactinformationofthecorrespondingexecutiveboardmember.

    Weplannedicebreakerstoatfirstgetpeoplecomfortable,learnalittleabouteachotherinordertohelpthemmakepotentialconnectionsandhavealittlefunbefore

    gettingdowntobusiness

    Budget:LeadershipNightisusedasalearningtoolfortheResidenceHallAssociationtoassisttheHallCouncilssotheeffectsarepricelesstous.Wehadabudgetof$67,whichincludedsuppliestomakenameplatesforeveryHallCouncilmember(a

    minimumof4councilmembersper16residencehalls),candytobeusedinicebreakersand

    tokeepenergylevelshigh.

    Leadership Night Activities:SUNYCortlandRHAbelievesthat torunonleadership,youmustfirstlearntowalk .Thismeetingwasusedtoeducateandeasethetransitionintotheirhallcouncilpositions.The

    executiveboardintroducedourselvesandexplainedourrolesandhowwecould assistthehall

    councils.Also,ourmissionstatementwasreadsotherewasnoconfusionastowhatour

    expectationsare.

    First,wedecidedmakingnameplateswouldbebeneficialfortheexecutiveboardtohelpuslearnourGeneralBodymembersbynamefaster,butalsoto increasethecommunitybetween

    membersofdifferenthallcouncils.Weprovidedmanycraftsuppliestocreatethesename

    plates,suchasawidevarietyofstickers,tape,colorfulpaper,scissors,string.Wehavefound

    communicationtobemuchmoreeffectiveinthegeneralbodyifallmembersareabletocall

    eachotherbynamesothiswasawaytofacilitatethatforthefuture.

    Avarietyoficebreakerswereutilizedtobesillyandtogettoknowpeopleonapersonallevel.Oneicebreakerutilizedwas,MyNameis(insertfavoriteicecreamflavor),andmyfavoriteice

    creamis(insertname).GeneralBodymembersrotatedgroupsbetweenexecutiveboard

    membersandwereencouragedtobeingroupswithpeopletheydidntknow. Thepurposeof

    meetingnewpeoplewasforthepotentialthathallscouldcollaborateonprogramming,orkeep

    incontacttoassisteachotheroutsideofourmeetings.Afterthat,theexecutiveboard metwiththeircorrespondingpositions,handedoutthecheatsheetsandfieldedanypositionspecific

    questions.Dutiesandexpectationsofeachrolewerealsodiscussed .

    The Overall Effect:Overall,LeadershipNightwasahugesuccess !GeneralBodymembershaveinformedusaboutcollaborativeprograms,andevencollaborativefundraising

    foraserviceproject.ThereismuchchatterbeforeourGeneralBodymeetingsnowasallthehall

    councilshavebecomefamiliarwitheachother. Thecheatsheetswereabrilliantadditiontothis

    yearsLeadershipNight.LeadershipNightcanoftenbelonganditishardforourmembersto

    retainalltheinformation,soourcheatsheetwasa simplewaytoeasethetransitionandithas

    reallybenefitedusintheend. Thereislessconfusionaboutdutiesandtasksandthegeneralbody

    memberscanalwayslookbackanduseitasareference,andeveniftheanswercantbefound,

    contactinformationoftheexecutiveboardmemberscanbefound,sowecanhelp.Itwasbecause

    ofthismeetingwegainedtheattentionofaHallCouncilmemberinterestedinanopen

    leadershippositiononourExecutiveBoard.

    effectivelytranslatethattothe

    hallcouncils.Withouta

    successfulLeadershipNight,

    hallcouncilswouldnotbeable

    tofunctiontothebestoftheir

    Purpose: Everyfall,themembersofSUNYCortlandschapterofNRHHgoonaretreat.Thetimeis

    previousyear,thisyearsfallretreatwasupinthe

    AdirondackMountains,locatedonthecollegeowned

    propertyofRaquetteLake.

    Afterhavingpreviousdifficultiesin

    attemptingtobookatripto

    RaquetteLake,lastyearsexecutive

    boardtookstepstomakesure

    thatwouldnotbeaproblemagain.

    Theplanningprocessforthisyears

    retreatbeganattheendofthe

    springsemester,withthedecisionofwheretheretreatwastobeheld,whatweekendit

    wouldbeheld,andthatwewouldbeparticipatinginthelowelementschallengecourse.The

    planningprocesscontinuedintothefallsemester,asthisyearsexecutiveboardworkedto

    planouttheitineraryfortheretreat.Sincethisyearsretreatfelllaterinthesemester,the

    usualbusinessthatistypicallytakencareofattheretreatinregardstocommitteeshad

    alreadybeendoneinpreviousmeetings;otheractivitieshadtobeplanned.Alotofplanning

    alsowentintotryingtofigureoutthelogisticsofourdeparturetimeconsideringwehada

    deadlineofbeingunpackedandattheboatdockby6:30pm.

    heSUNYsystem,receivingitsdesignationonAugust18,

    004.Therearetwomainfacilities,AntlersandCamp

    untington,aswellasathirdsite,KirbyCamp.WestayedcrossthelakeatCampHuntington.Asmuchasyouplan

    retreat,oranythingforthatmatter,therewillalwaysbe

    omethingthatthrowsamonkeywrenchintoyour

    chedule.Forourgroup,thatwasgettingcaughtin

    tandstilltrafficforanhourforacarfire,andameal

    topthattookmuchlongerthananticipated.Noworries,

    urgroupusedthestopalongthehighwayastheperfect

    hancetopracticetheirhackysackskillsandgetinsome

    Budget:IncomparisontoourRHA,NRHH

    hasafairlysmalloperatingbudget

    fortheyear.Howeverwiththat

    beingsaidtheexecutiveboardfelt

    itwasnecessaryandappropriatetoallocateasmuchfundingaswedid

    forthefallretreat.Theretreat

    endedupcostingaround$4,000;

    howeverthebenefittoour

    organizationhasnoprice.That

    amountcoveredourstayatthe

    facilities,whichincludedmeals,

    andthelowelementschallenge

    course,andthecostofrentingvans

    forthetrip.

    Activities:Withfourpeopletoasmallroom,nocellphoneservice,

    andnotmuchelsetodo,weentertainedourselvesandhadthechancetogettoknoweachotherbetteronFridayNight.

    Saturdaymorningwereconvenedwithourfacilitators

    wherewewentovertrustfallsandsafetyproceduresforthe

    challengecourse.Wethentrekkedoutinthecoldrain

    wherewesplitintotwosmallergroups.Asagroupwedidthe

    WhaleWatch,SpidersWeb,andonepartoftheMohawkWalk.Eachofthesethree

    activitiesweparticipatedinthroughoutthedayinvolvedtrust,communication,and

    organization.ThesesthreeelementsareimportanttohaveafunctioningNRHH.

    Saturdayafternoonhadatwo-hourwindow

    offreetime,wheresomememberswentand

    triedthehighropescourse,whileothersjust

    hungaroundthecabinandsocialized.The

    groupthenreconvenedwherewereviewed

    changesmadetoourconstitution,created

    expectationsforboththegeneralbodyand

    theexecutiveboard,andalsocameupwith

    sloganideasforourchaptershirts.After

    businesswasover,ouradvisorpreparedan

    activitycalledQuest.Questisagamethat

    iscommonlyusedoncruiseships.The

    activityinvolveschallengeswhereteams

    havetoeitherbringupastateditemor

    performsomething.Rapswerecreated,andtherewasevensomesinginganddancingto

    MichaelJackson.Sincetherainsquashedthepossibilityofhavingabonfire,weinsteadhada

    piataandpassedaroundabagofquestions,wherewetookaspinonthetraditionalquestion

    ball.Laughtercontinuedthroughthenight,andweallhadanopportunitytogettoknowone

    anotheralotbetter.

    Memories/Overall Effects:TheweekendretreatatRaquetteLakeprovidedanincredibleopportunityformemberstobond,aswellastoexperienceRaquetteLake.WhilesomeprogramsatCortlandgoup

    toRaquetteLakeasarequirement,manyofourmembershadneverbeenuptherebefore,

    andthiswouldbetheonlyopportunitytheywouldhave.Newmembershadthe

    opportunitytogettoknowreturningmembers,andgetabetterfeelforwhatNRHHisall

    about.Thelowelementschallengecourseallowedmemberstostretchtheircomfort

    zones,andlettheirleadershipvoicebeheard,whilemostimportantlywealllearnedto

    workwitheachotherasanorganization.SUNYCortlandsfallretreattoRaquetteLake

    wasnotonlyrunningonleadership,butitwasalsorunningonmooselove!

    Theexecutiveboardretreatallowedforcollaborationandthesharingofideas.Thiscontinued into our organizations separate leadership efforts. On our executive board

    retreattherewasalotofbunkbeddiscussion,whereeachboardexplainedhowexactlytheir organization runs on leadership. For example NRHH told RHA how they utilize

    committeesandcommitteeheadstospearheadtheireffortstoexecutethefourpillars,

    andhow thatcouldtranslatetoprogramplanningandadvocacyforRHA.SinceNRHH

    doesnotdoasmanyprograms,theyofferedRHAnon-traditionalprogramideasthatthey

    feltwouldbenefittheSUNYCortlandcampuscommunity.NRHHsuggestedtoRHAways

    to encourage their general body members to write OTMs. The two groups further

    discussed aDouble Dare program that they are planning on collaborating on in the

    spring,aswellashowtheycouldworktogetheronserviceprojects.

    AtLeadershipNight,RHAworkedtomakethemembersawareofthepowerthat

    theyhaveinbeingageneralbodymember,andtheinfluencetheyhaveoncampus.They

    delegated the programstothe general body sotheywouldbeplanningprogramsthey

    wanted to see. This was something discussed at the retreat, and both organizations

    decideditwouldbeeffectivetoimplementforbothoftheirgeneralbodies.Generalbody

    members begantobringpotential service program ideas for the semester. Inplanning

    theirprograms,RHAsplitupintocommittees.Whenthiswasnotaseffectiveasoriginally

    expected,theexecutiveboardreferencedwhattheylearnedfromNRHHattheexecutive

    boardretreat,andimplementedcommitteeheads.

    OntheNRHHretreatatRaquetteLake,NRHHtookapageoutofRHAsbook,and

    explainedthepossibilitiesfortheirmemberstogetinvolvedattheregionallevel.Thisissomething that previously had only occurred in RHA. Past NEACURH and NACURH

    delegationshadminimalNRHHinvolvement.ThecurrentNRHHexecutiveboardwanted

    tobringthemooselovethatwasinRHAtotheirorganization.
