Welcome to the second issue of Super!
A magazine that recognizes creative arts programs in schools for students with
learning differences
Dear Readers, It is a pleasure to return with Issue 2 of Super, a unique magazine that recognizes outstanding creative arts programs in schools for students with learning differences. This issue of Super honors the following schools: The Parkside School, P.S. 14!Bronx, and West End Day School. Over forty creative works, including stories, drawings, and paintings, are included in this issue. The idea for Super grew out of my exposure to different learning styles and to the arts. I am a high school sophomore who was struck by the imaginative works of the students I encountered while volunteering at the McCarton School, which educates children and young adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders, and at an arts-in-education program in New York City. I became even more interested in producing this magazine while attending related summer programs, including a camp for the arts and a psychology course at a university, and while working as a staff writer for my high school’s science magazine. In addition, I recently began volunteering at the Friendship Circle, which serves children with special needs. I hope to bring what I have learned from all these experiences to Super. The terrific team at Super helped to present the creative works in this issue. Super’s Managing Editor, Justin Karp, is a college freshman who has volunteered at the NYU Summer Program for Kids (which serves children with attention deficit and behavior disorders) and in the New York City public school system; a national educational magazine has featured an article that he wrote about this volunteer work. Super’s Senior Editor, Harrison Gottfried, is a high school student at The Learning Clinic; he also is an avid photographer, with works displayed at the Yorktown Grange Fair in New York. Super’s Advisory Board consists of Laura Whitman, M.D., Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai Medical Center, and Marcia Surval Gottfried L.M.S.W., a parent consultant. I hope that you enjoy this issue of Super! Jenna Karp Founder/Editor-in-Chief

There once lived a not-so-clever coyote in the Iroquois tribe named Mr. Coyote. He had a friend named Mr. Fox. They liked to play hide-and-seek, but Mr. Coyote wasn't very good because he wasn't very sneaky. The second he would find a hiding place he would announce, "I'll be over here!" Mr. Fox felt bad for Mr. Coyote because he wasn't very good at hiding, even though he was okay with never winning. Mr. Fox wanted him to be able to win, so he decided to talk to him and give him some advice. "You need to learn how to hide, so I will teach you," said Mr. Fox. "When you find a spot, you aren't supposed to shout out where you are. The other person is supposed to have a hard time finding you." Mr. Fox helped Mr. Coyote practice how to play the game. He practiced hiding for hours and hours every day. Now, Mr. Coyote learned to be as quiet as a mouse and when someone did finally find him, they were surprised to see him. By: Joshua I am a Mayan Artist. There is a Legend in my culture known as the Legend of the Aluxes that says the Aluxes protect and help the Mayan people. I must offer my Alux things so that it says loyal to me. I give it cacao beans and corn. My Alux helps me to create great and unique pictures, create different art supplies, protect art that's special to me, and help me find places for me to hang up my art. By: Shoshana

In the year 2000, when many people lived on Atlantis, it was like a New York City in the middle of the ocean. It had lots of people, buildings, and shops. It also had a Statue of Fisherty and the Empire Sea Building. Poseidon did not like the people that lived on Atlantis because they were always polluting the water. Not only did they pollute the water, they also made fun of Poseidon. They did not believe that he existed and had powers, even though there was a very old man that said otherwise. Poseidon wanted to prove that he existed so he went over to Atlantis and appeared before everyone. He called the people to Fish Central, the "Grand Central" of the island. He said that he was the real Poseidon, but people just thought he was an actor. He started to shoot water out of hands, but people just thought that he was shooting water out of hoses. To prove that he was the real Poseidon and had powers, he flooded the entire city under water. Since the wise, old man was the only one that believed in him, he spared him by turning him into a fish. To this day, that is why Atlantis is underwater. By: Carlo I am a Mayan Mathematician. There is a legend in my culture known as the Legend of the Aluxes that says that clay figures help Mayan people. I must offer my Alux things so that it stays loyal to me. I give it corn and cacao drink. My Alux helps me memorize my tables, make stuff to help me calculate, figure out my math problems, and give me ideas for me to study. By: Yasmine
