There are a wide range of academic enrichment act ivit ies available to you

during your t ime at Stroud High Sixth Form.

These act ivit ies are run in conjunct ion with subject areas and will enhance

your learning and understanding of your A Level subjects. They const itute an

integral part of our A Level programme.

Gett ing involved in these supercurricular act ivit ies is a great way to show the

passion you have for your subjects and that you have the capacity to

undertake independent study.

It can also help you to develop a life-long interest in a part icular area and help

you make decisions about your future career path.

Employers and universit ies are looking for individuals who can demonstrate

a genuine interest in their chosen field.

By pushing yourself to act ively absorb new information and challenging

yourself to invest igate areas outside of the A Level curriculum, you will be

If STEM is your passion you can get involved in a range of projects run by our Mathematics and Science departments that will stretch your experience outside of your A Level studies and help deepen your knowledge.

BioChem GroupOur BioChem Group is aimed at A Level Biology and Chemistry students:

- discover more about the applicat ion of the tools and concepts of chemistry to living systems

- learn basic techniques of a lab biochemist using equipment at the same standard as in research labs in academia

- carry out DNA fingerprint ing like a forensic scient ist - programme bacteria to produce jelly fish protein - learn about bioinformatics including how to create phylogenetic trees

from DNA sequence data

MedVetDent SocietyIf you are considering a career in Medicine, Veterinary Science or Dentistry then our MedVetDent Society will help you prepare your university applicat ion. You will receive advice and guidance on work experience opportunit ies, extra-curricular act ivit ies and wider reading that will strengthen your applicat ion as well as advice on draft ing your personal statement and preparing for Pre-Admission tests. We help students interested in all medical fields, including Nursing, Paramedic Science, Physiotherapy, etc. All science students are also welcome to attend our Biotech, Dissect ion and Microscope Clubs.

CERN Laboratories GenevaWe offer students studying Physics and/or Mathematics an opportunity to visit the CERN Laboratories in Geneva to see the Large Hadron Collider. CERN is an inspiring part icle research facility that will enhance and enrich your understanding and appreciat ion of Physics and raise awareness of the applicat ion of Mathematics in research and engineering.

'I found the Biology trip to Oxford Museum of Natural History to be very interest ing. It

expanded my understanding of the subject and how it is important in the real world. The

talk by Darragh Ennis (?Cells: The Building Blocks Of Life?) was my favourite, revealing many things I didn?t know about cells and

DNA, teaching me just how much we have in common with other animals through our

genes, which I found really surprising. All the talks were useful and inspiring, and it was a

valuable experience which contributed to my wider understanding of Biology as a whole.'

Biology and Chemist ry OlympiadsYou will be able to develop creat ive thinking and apply your exist ing knowledge in new and interest ing contexts by entering the internat ional Biology and Chemistry Olympiads. Biologists also have an opportunity to visit Oxford University.

Maths ChallengesMathematicians have the opportunity to visit Oxford University and Maths in Act ion and to take part in the Senior Maths Challenge and the Maths Olympiad. You will also attend Maths Inspirat ion events where you will hear the UK's most inspiring maths speakers present ing Mathematics in the context of real-world applicat ions.

Extended Project Qualificat ion - Cyber SecurityIf you are taking EPQ as your Addit ional Qualificat ion, why not complete the EPQ in Cyber Security which we offer in conjunct ion with Cyber Security Challenge and City & Guilds.

Gold Crest AwardA number of sixth form students part icipate in the Gold Crest Award programme as part of their enrichment opt ion. You can also choose CREST Gold as your Addit ional Qualificat ion. You will complete a project that makes an original contribut ion to a STEM field of study and submit your findings via an online platform. The Award will help you to hone your invest igat ive skills and employ the scient ific method to conduct your own piece of research. CREST Gold can be used to enhance your UCAS personal statements. In addit ion, the Gold Award is recognised and respected by universit ies and employers and can count towards the skills sect ion of your Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Arts, Humanit ies and Languages

Art Text ilesIf you are a talented Text iles student, we will encourage you to showcase your expert ise by entering the Young Fashion Designer of the Year competit ion and the Painswick Art Couture Competit ion. You will also be able to part icipate in the annual SHS Fashion Show and become a member of our Text iles Club. Students are also offered the opportunity to attend the New Designers Exhibit ion in London.

Art & DesignYou will have an opportunity to visit art galleries in two major capital cit ies in a single trip start ing with the Tate Modern and National Gallery in London before travelling on to Paris to visit the Louvre, Château de Versailles, Centre Pompidou and many others. We will also support you in entering local competit ions including Gloucestershire Young Photographer of the Year.

Drama & TheatreTheatre visits are a key component of your Drama A Level and you will at tend numerous trips to see a variety of shows in theatres across the country as well as seeing touring companies visit ing the school.

English LiteratureEnglish students can hone their writ ing skills by joining the Creat ive Writ ing Club and the English University Prep Group. You will be able to forge links with local journalists and poet in residence and take part in various theatre visits.

French, German and SpanishAs an A Level languages student, you will be able to part icipate in exchanges to France, Germany and/or Spain; the French and Spanish exchanges include work experience opportunit ies so you will be fully conversant by the end of your stay! Previous placements have included working at the local town hall, in a bakery, with school children and in a chocolate shop. You will also be able to take part in MFL lectures and have one-to-one sessions with a nat ive speakers.

GeographyAs a Geographer, you will take part in two resident ial field trips and are encouraged to part icipate in competit ions run by the Geographical Associat ion and the Royal Geographical Society.

'Listening to several influent ial speakers, including Germaine Greer, as a member of the second wave feminist movement , was capt ivat ing. These talks added an ext ra dimension to our learning on police profiling and educat ional policy. The quest ions

from students challenged the speaker and prompted enlightening responses.'

HistoryYou will be able to join our History Society (SHSHS) which facilit ies visit ing speakers and has developed links with local universit ies including holding a History Skills Workshop in collaborat ion with Oxford University.

MusicWe will act ively support you if you wish to part icipate in public performance events including the Cheltenham Music Fest ival and Music for Youth plus Rotary Young Musician of the Year.

Physical Educat ionWe offer all students the opportunity to take a Level 3 qualificat ion as a Sports Leader. We also run numerous clubs that you can lead and part icipate in. Students are also able to use our on-site fitness suite for free.

Polit ics As a Polit ics student you will have a chance to visit the Houses of Parliament and the Supreme Court.

Philosophy, Ethics & BeliefIf you choose to study Philosophy, Ethics and Belief you will be able to take part in the Cheltenham Ladies College Philosophy Conference whose past speakers have included Julian Baggini and Baroness Warnock.

PsychologyYou will have the opportunity to attend various external events including talks on topics such as Neuroscience, Science and Pseudoscience as well as listening to talks by visit ing clinical psychologists. Students will also attend a Psychology and Criminology day at the University of Gloucestershire.

SociologyOur Sociologists can listen to high calibre speakers in their field by attending either the annual Criminology Conference or the Sociology in Act ion Conference.We can also help you find work experience placements which in the past have included oragnisat ions such as Stroud Foodbank, GDASS (Gloucestershire Domestic Abuse Support Services), local primary schools and the ?Ride Along? scheme with Gloucestershire Police.

At Stroud High Sixth Form you will find an extraordinary range of opportunit ies outside of your A Level studies to discover and pursue your talents and interests.

Many of the clubs and societ ies we offer feed into the cultural and sport ing life of the school with trips, competit ions, drama product ions and charity events taking place throughout the academic year.

We encourage you to part icipate in act ivit ies that will not only give you a deeper understanding of your A Level subjects but also develop your independence and init iat ive.

Life at SHSF is about gett ing involved, trying your best and learning from the experience so that you can progress to the next chapter in your life as a confident and independent young adult who will make a posit ive contribut ion to society. SHSF students make a difference in not only the local but also the global community.

We also know how important it is for you to develop your own personal interests, so we have lots of opportunit ies to get involved in SHSF life, school council and a range of sixth form committees. You can join the Eco Society, Feminist Society, Global Social Leadership group and Amnesty Internat ional to name a few.

Another way of developing your skills is to work towards a volunteering award by working with the local community, or through leadership schemes such as the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.

Extensive opportunit ies are also available for students to give back to their school community through volunteering with a variety of groups such as Peer Mentoring. Many of our students mentor students from local schools as part of our Raising Aspirat ion Programme.

Our aim is for you to leave us with confidence and ambit ion as someone who will go out and make their mark somewhere in the world and our extra-curricular opportunit ies are a key part of our provision in helping you achieve this goal.

'Going to the UN is an experience I will never forget for so many reasons, one of which being the amazing people I met . I was lucky enough to speak at an event alongside the head of the Law Society of England and Wales, as well as having a meet ing with an esteemed corporate lawyer, in which she gave me lots of advice

that I went on to use in making my applicat ion to university. CSW opened my eyes to the huge importance of act ivism, advocacy and passion to t ruly make a change, and it was great ly inspiring to see the dedicat ion of so many amazing women and men around the world to do just that . I believe the UN t rip shaped me into a more confident , more proact ive and more perseverant student , and it is an experience I

United Nat ions in New York

Want to see how the United Nations operates first-hand?

SHSF is in a unique posit ion in being able to offer you the chance to get involved in the UN process. Working closely with Serene Communicat ions we are the only school in the country to do this. You will t ravel to New York and attend the annual meeting of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) at the UN headquarters. CSW is a global inter-governmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women and is instrumental in promoting women?s rights, documenting the reality of women?s lives throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women.

You will have the opportunity to sit on a panel at an NGO event or chair your own event. You will at tend a wealth of other events focusing on gender equality and the status of women worldwide. You are accredited as a Youth Delegate through the National Associat ion of Women's Organisat ions (NAWO) and will meet with UK government officials whilst in New York.

An invaluable aspect of the experience is the opportunity to watch, listen and learn from many expert and thought-provoking speakers from around the world. The sheer amount of experience and expert ise gathered in one place is astonishing - this is work experience and networking at a global level.

You will make incredible contacts with inspirat ional and incredibly important people. It is a truly life changing, inspirat ional experience.

Working with Serene Communicat ions, we offer the opportunity to attend meetings of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva.

The UNHRC is an inter-governmental body within the United Nations system responsible for strengthening the promotion and protect ion of human rights around the globe and for addressing situat ions of human rights violat ions and making recommendations on them.

You will at tend Government sessions of the UNHRC and NGO events and part icipate in those NGO events and, if possible, make presentat ions at them.

You will meet with NGOs, UN staff and UK Government officials who will inform you of a variety of UN processes. You will also be able to visit the UK Mission to the UN. A remarkable opportunity indeed!

You will also be involved in an NGO conference and be given the opportunity to give presentat ions there.

You will visit the Palais Nations and Palais Wilson (which housed the League of Nat ions) and the UN library. The library tour includes the archives including the original t reat ies and Nuremburg trial t ranscripts.

Bristol University - Access to Bristol

Every year, Bristol University selects students to take part in its Access to Bristol Programme which provides local students with an unprecedented opportunity to experience life at this Russell Group university.

If selected, you will at tend a series of sessions held at the University on Wednesday afternoons, choosing from 28 subject streams, represent ing many of the degree subjects available at Bristol.

You will get an idea of what it is like to study at the University of Bristol, working with academics and current students who can offer advice and guidance about higher educat ion and their subject area.

Bristol University - Workshops

Y12 students attend the University of Bristol?s Y12 Schools Conference where you will have the opportunity to experience first-hand life at this Russell Group university.

You will receive advice and guidance on the progression to Higher Educat ion and in part icular how to write personal statements (which will also provide a basis for writ ing a curriculum vitae and complet ing employment applicat ions).

The day is beneficial for all students regardless of whether Bristol is one of their preferred choices or whether they intend to go to university.

We are aware that competit ion for places at Oxford and Cambridge is fierce which is why we have developed a programme of support and have a dedicated member of staff to help you with your applicat ion. We have strong links with our partner colleges Lady Margaret Hall (Oxford University) and Robinson College (Cambridge University).

Bespoke Visit to Lady Margaret HallIn Y12 we arrange a visit to LMH where the applicat ion process is explained in detail. You will also have the opportunity to attend academic taster sessions, enjoy lunch in the dining hall and meet student ambassadors who will take you on a tour of the colleges.

Oxbridge ConferenceIn March you will be able to take part in the Oxbridge Conference. This is an annual conference where experienced admissions staff, subject specialists and current students from the universit ies of Oxford and Cambridge provide information on their courses, out line the admissions process and provide you with the opportunity to hear first-hand how current undergraduate students find life at Oxford and Cambridge. The conference is an excellent introduct ion to Oxbridge and will help your decide whether these universit ies are right for you.

UNIQ Summer CoursesWe will support you and encourage you to apply to take part in Oxford University UNIQ Summer courses that give you a taste of the Oxford undergraduate student experience. You will live in an Oxford college for a week, attend lectures and seminars in your chosen subject area, and receive expert advice on the Oxford applicat ion and interview process.

Former SHS Students at Oxford and CambridgeWe invite former SHS students who are current ly studying or have studied at Oxford or Cambridge to come and give talks on the applicat ion process and their experiences as an undergraduate.

Mock InterviewsFormer students provide t ips and advice on what to expect from an Oxbridge interview. We also arrange for experts outside of school to help you with interview pract ice and give you a flavour of the real thing together with invaluable feedback.

Our Drama and Music departments are key components of the school with many SHSF students gett ing involved in school performances and product ions regardless of whether they are taking Music or Drama at A Level.

Join the A Capella Choir, Downfielders (Folk), Flute Ensemble, Jazz Band, Recorder Ensemble, Senior Orchestra, Senior Strings, Senior Choir, Senior Clarinets or Wind Ensemble and perform at school events and outside performances.

If you are interested in Drama get involved in our Musical Theatre Club and Drama Special Effects Make-Up Club.

Take part in the annual school product ion, either behind the scenes or in front of the audience. Many students help out with set design, musical direct ion and costume design for our shows.

You could also take part in the Gloucestershire Young Musician of the Year competit ion where former students have achieved great success.

Stroud High School Debating Team is not only extremely act ive but

incredibly successful. The Debating Society is open to all students ? it is not a

requirement that you take A Level Polit ics to get involved.

You will be able to take part in the annual European Youth Parliament

Competit ion. The sessions begin with team-building act ivit ies where you get

to know your committee members in order to successfully work together as a

team.

The following day, you start work on your resolut ions, which seek to offer

solut ions to the various problems out lined in the motions assigned to

different committees.

Examples of the issues allocated were the gender employment gap, disability

in the workplace, art ificial intelligence, space debris and ant ibiot ic resistance.

The next day you debate the various resolut ions in the General Assembly.

Our team last year was part icularly strong making fantast ic points and

rebuttals as well as strong and powerful speeches being delivered.

Student Leadership at Stroud High is about making change happen and our sixth form students play a key role in leading and organising act ivit ies for the ent ire school community. These have included:

Every year a significant number of sixth form students complete the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. It is not necessary to have achieved Silver prior to undertaking Gold.

You will meet new people and make new friends, take part in an amazing experience and gain an incredible sense of achievement

You will also have the opportunity to develop self-confidence, self-reliance, leadership, teamwork, decision-making, problem solving, communicat ion, commitment and t ime management skills.

Duke of Edinburgh Award - Gold

Ten Tors Challenge

The Ten Tors Challenge event takes places in May every year and involves 2,400 students in 400 teams of six navigat ing routes of between 35 and 55 miles over the Northern half of Dartmoor visit ing ten nominated tors/check points in under two days.

It is widely believed to be the largest, demanding and most-rewarding walk organised by the Army?s South Western HQ in Okehampton, assisted by the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force and the Dartmoor Rescue Group.

The challenge will test your endurance, navigat ion and survival skills and is intended to make you become self-sufficient - carrying everything you will need for the trek and making your own decisions.

Over the past few years we have been developing links with Hanbit High School, a very high achieving post-15 school in South Korea.

Our connect ion has been through a historic link the Soldiers of Gloucester

have with the province of Paju.

The exchange offers cultural and social opportunit ies that are second to

none.

To help facilitate the exchange we have arranged for our students to

undertake lessons in Korean.

You can be part of this excit ing exchange by host ing a visitor, returning to

South Korea and learning a new language!

You will have an opportunity to use your enrichment opt ion on Wednesday afternoons to volunteer as a mentor to pupils in Years 9-11 at local 11-16 schools part icularly in English, Languages, Mathematics and the Sciences.

You can also volunteer at local primary schools where every Wednesday afternoon our Outreach Team of teachers and sixth form students go into these schools and deliver an 8 week programme of lessons to their Year 5 cohort. Subjects include Maths, Music, Languages and Science.

At the end of each 8 week programme, we hold a Fest ival of Learning at Stroud High for all the primary school students involved in the programme, giving them access to our facilit ies, finishing with a cert ificate ceremony that their parents are also invited to attend. As a sixth form student you will be able to help with the organisat ion and running of the day. In part icular students studying for their Level 3 Qualificat ion in Sports Leadership can get involved to qualify for their Young Sports Leaders Award.

There are a number of opportunit ies for you to help mentor students in lower years at Stroud High School providing younger pupils with an invaluable support network.

You do not have to be a member of the Student Leadership to organise and run

an event for charity.
