I hope that all went well with the start of the second semester! Hard to believe that we have already passed the half way point of the school year! As we shared in a recent memo, in the first Sup’s Memo of each month, we are going to provide information on one of our trustees. This will give you some personal information on their lives outside of BTPS, information on the Board committees they are involved in and some insight into their thoughts on being a trustee. These biographies will also be showcased on the BTPS website under the “Board” tab.

This month our trustee showcased in “Meet Your Trustee” is Alice McLaughlin. Alice was elected in 2007 and at the end of this term in October; she will have served as a BTPS Board member for 10 years!

Alice McLaughlin - A Little Bit About Me

I was born in Mannville, as were my parents, and I graduated from Mannville School. After graduation I attended NAIT then worked in the radiation department as a medical dicta typist at the Cross Cancer Clinic for several years. I married a local boy, Lloyd McLaughlin, and moved back to Mannville to farm. I worked at the local doctor’s office and after starting a family stayed home to raise my children. All four of them attended Mannville School and all have gone on to tech school or university. I have three married sons that

are invested into our family business of farming and a daughter that works in the oil industry. She is to be married this summer. We have a cow/calf operation of over 500, plus grow over 7000 acres of mixed grains. I enjoy gardening, travelling and spending time with my seven grandchildren which will all be attending Mannville School. We like to take time to enjoy Palm Springs weather as we have property there.

I am currently serving on the following Board Committees: Negotiations Committee Policy Committee ASBA Zone 2/3 Board Representative

My Thoughts on Being a School Board Trustee During my time as a trustee, I have served in a number of roles; Vice Chair, as well as Policy, Negotiations, CUPE Liaison and Transportation committees. I regularly attend Parent Council meetings in Mannville and Innisfree.

Data Security: Our shared responsibility

Last week I sent out an open letter to all Administration staff to explain the recent problems our division has been having with ransomware. This letter explains:

Our backup plan,

What is in the school backup,

Want happens when a user gets infected with ransomware,

How our department goes about removing ransomware,

What is lost when this happens?

In the letter I asked the principals to start a dialogue with all staff to educate ourselves about how to protect our data from these criminal activities. If you have not seen the letter please use this link https://goo.gl/KJUJfH to read the letter. Again, this example shows how a legitimate looking email can really be a phishing attempt. The one below is a phishing attempt. Email us at [email protected] tech problems [email protected] for PowerSchool or PowerTeacher problems.

At the provincial level I have represented BTPS at Alberta School Board Association Zone 2/3 for nine years. At zones I have served on the Advocacy Committee, and this year will be my second time on the Edwin Parr Selection Committee. For one year I was the Board Representative for the Public School Board Association and sat on the Community Recognition Committee. When my children attended school I volunteered in the classroom plus in the office. I held every position at the School Council. Ten years before trusteeship I was hired as a TA in Mannville School and received a lot of practical experience within the classroom. I gained a lot of respect for all students, teaching assistants and teachers. I believe all students should be able to achieve in a positive learning environment and that all children have a right to a good education. I am an advocate for rural education and am proud to say I am a part of the Buffalo Trail Public Schools team. Take care,

TRANSPORATION

NEW:

INFORMATION ITEMS AND NEWSLETTERS FOR BUS DRIVERS:

Principals and/or administrative assistants, please remember to be giving your bus drivers a copy of your news-letter so they know what is happening at your schools. It helps for them to know what activities are going on. It will assist them in knowing what grades are away on a field trip, what extra curricular activities are going on, and what special events are happening at the school that they may want to partake in. They are a part of your school community so please give them a copy of your school newsletter.

Also, it is important that when the letters go out from the school that a child in a grade/class has lice/scabies, etc. that the bus drivers get a copy so they can take the necessary precautions. Students on the bus are in close proximity as they are in the classroom, and drivers may decide they want to clean their bus thoroughly. They don’t need specific details, just the general letter that goes out to the parents so that they are informed.

Thank you for your help in keeping our bus drivers informed. They are important part of the school community.

Social Studies 20-1 participating in Experiences Canada 150 and Me for their final challenge.

They created final projects in response to this question: What is the greatest opportunity/challenge

facing your generation.

We had guests sit down and have mini round tables with our students to talk about issues in our

area - regional, provincial and federal level.

The students will submit their projects for a chance to win a trip to one of four national forums to discuss

this issues their generation is facing. Then they could also be picked to represent youth in Ottawa for the

150 celebration. (All trips full expenses paid.)

Clandonald school celebrated their grand opening of their m aker space. It began with a

ribbon cutting and then students enjoyed their very first time in the makerspace by engaging in a

S.T.E.M. activity and building snowmen, snow forts, sleds and a snowball catapult. Our students and

staff can't wait to continue to explore and learn in our new space.
