Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) update• The NGSS is the new science standards for the state of California
• The NGSS describe the key scientific ideas and practices that all students (K-12) should learn by the time they graduate from high school
• The NGSS is an assessment framework– Performance Expectations describing what students should be able to do
and are intended to be endpoints in instruction
3 facets of NGSS
Content -- DISCIPLINARY CORE IDEAS:
Foundational ideas needed for every student to be able to begin his or her own inquiries and practices.
Physical ScienceLife Science
Earth and Space Science Engineering, Technology and Applications of Science
CROSSCUTTING CONCEPTS:
Concepts that apply to all four sciences.
PatternsCause and Effect: Mechanism and explanation
Scale, proportion and quantitySystems and System models
Energy and matter: Flows, cycles and conservation.Structure and functionStability and change
PRACTICES:
Describe how scientists build theories and models about the way our world, and systems within it, works.
Asking questions and defining problemsDeveloping and using models
Planning and carrying out investigationsAnalyzing and interpreting data
Using mathematics, information & computer technology and computational thinking
Constructing explanations and designing solutionsEngaging in argument from evidence
Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information
