# Magdalena, this season the Greenshow-room is back in Hotel Adlon. Do you feel like coming home? Why did you move back?
Magdalena Schaffrin: In our 10th sea-son – the Greenshowroom feels very much at home in the Hotel Adlon Kempinski. As the Greenshowroom follows a concept that unites luxury with sustainability, the Hotel Adlon Kempinski offers the right ambience for us. It is centered in the Berlin Fashion Week and closer to Ethical Fashion Show Berlin at the ewerk. For the first time in July, the Greenshowroom will have a more gen-erous room layout. During the three-day trade fair the showrooms will no longer be accommodated in hotel suites. Instead, the trade fair format will be spatially more open and will occupy larger rooms – the Berliner Salons. All in all we are happy to be back in the Adlon and are excited about the 10th edi-tion of the Greenshowroom and the Salon-show.
GREENSHOWROOM & ETHICAL FASHION SHOW
BERLIN
# Will Greenshowroom again in Hotel Adlon be the same as it was until last year or did something change?
Olaf Schmidt: As Magdalena has already said, exhibitors and visitors can expect a new concept in comparison with previous seasons, with a significantly more generous allocation of space. We think that this will show off our exhibitors' presentations to bet-ter effect. A major highlight of the trade fair will be the traditionally well-attended Salon-show. We have managed to book the ball-room for this – the largest room in the hotel – and thus to create an exclusive atmosphere. At the same time, the Salonshow is set to be more extensive than ever before: 70 differ-ent 'looks' from the coming spring and sum-mer collections in the Greenshowroom and the Ethical Fashion Show Berlin will be on show to be admired.

# Besides this relocation, what can we expect from this season's Greenshowroom?
Olaf Schmidt: There is a particular focus in the Green Showroom on business fash-ions this season. The new Gotsutsumu label will be there as the first ever label for gen-tlemen's suits to have GOTS certification. Ben Weide will also be exhibiting classic suits and silk blouses. Alongside these, in the Green Showroom, there will, equally, be collections suitable for everyday wear, including bags and shoes. Selected parts of these collec-tions will also be on display in the Salonshow on 9 July 2014 at 15:30. There will, moreo-ver, be presentations of the winning styles to emerge from the collaborative project between Esmod Berlin and Messe Frankfurt. The collections were designed for a competi-tion to dress the guides (male and female) at the German pavilion at Expo 2015 in Milan.

# What makes Greenshowroom's Salon-show so different from other fashion shows?
Magdalena Schaffrin: With our concept of combining luxury with sustainability already in 2009 we were pioneers and met zeitgeist. Fashionable yet sustainable - the Salon-show presents highlights of the Greenshow-rooms collections and thereby shows how great eco-fair fashion looks today. Labels such as Alma + Lovis, Ben Weide, Deepmello, Esmod & Hessnatur, Gotsutsumu, Inti Ferrei-ra, Lifegist, Lillika Eden, Lionel Morin, Maria Seifert Collections, Edelziege, Royal Blush, Sey Organic Jeans, Silke Handley, Skrabak, Studio Elsien Gringhuis, SomySo and Xess + Baba will showcase pieces of their collec-tions.
# What are your personal highlights at Ethical Fashion Show Berlin this summer?
Olaf Schmidt: We are looking forward to lots of new international exhibitors this year, like People Tree, Cyclus and Greenbomb. But, apart from that, the Ethical Fashion Show Berlin demonstrates - this season as in no other - that it is far more than just a fashion show. Together with the Green Showroom, it offers an extensive complementary pro-gramme, which includes lectures, panel dis-cussions and evening events, all related, in one way or another, to fashion and sustain-ability. As a result, the two trade events con-stitute Europe's largest platform for eco-fair fashion during the Berlin Fashion Week. The 'Create Green Breakfast' is worth a special mention, too. This year, we have been fortu-nate in recruiting politicians, journalists and business people to come and discuss cur-rent developments with regard to "compul-sory quality marks for textiles".

JULY 2014
# Which new trends in green fashion for the spring/summer 2015 season will your exhibitors show us?
Magdalena Schaffrin: In the spring/sum-mer 15 collections pastel colors are promi-nent – seen in collections from Silke Handley, Johanna Riplinger and Lifegist. The designers combine classic and elegant cuts with ten-der colors. New brands, such as Gotsutsumu, Ben Weide and Lillika Eden show sustaina-ble business looks both for men and wom-en, Lillika Eden is showing casual but office capable looks. The looks can be completed with innovative shoes from Brazil. Steps on Green have created a line of high heels with bio acrylic heels – a true material innovation. Besides professional brands we also offer student and research projects a platform at the Greenshowroom as we find it important to support young designers and new ideas. For example, in July the young research team Blond & Bieber will present their absolute-ly new method to use microalgaes as color-ants – the result is an impressive wide color palette.

By launching her own label in summer 2012 after more than 10 years of gaining expe-riences, Johanna Riplinger was finally able to follow her personal vision of sustainable fashion and creating clothes according to her idea of sensuality and femininity.Being contemporary but timeless at the same time, her clothes, made of natural fabrics like silk and organic cotton, fulfil an important aspect of sustainability and are able to com-pete economically on today’s fashion market.Johanna Riplinger gets inspiration from nature in all its facets but also from her life in Paris and the women she is surrounded by which explains the French feminine chic that runs like a thread through all her creations.
Her new collection is playful and renders homage to the beauty of life and strong women, or as Riplinger puts it: “[...] cele-brating the woman in her multidimension-al being and encouraging her to be confident and stand up for her personal choices“.

According to the motto “getting the maxi-mum out of the minimum“, fashion designer Elsien Gringhuis creations are simple, con-temporary and innovative concerning form, style and construction of the pieces. Winning several prizes and awards for her first collec-tions after her graduation, the Dutch design-er had a great start into the world of fashion with her elegant, to the point kind of style embodying femininity and luxury.
Gringhuis gets mostly inspired by Nordic nature and the Scandinavian landscapes using preferably bright, deep colours like green and blue for her designs. The upcoming collection is based on the question “how to wear a square“: shapes play an important role, whether it’s circles, trian-gles or squares. All used fabrics are organic and the items locally produced.

# Niccolò, can you describe what BfFF is about in one sentence?
Berlin fashion Film Festival is a curated event focused on fashion film, an upcoming genre considered to be the future of fashion marketing.
# When did you decide to found the Ber-lin fashion Film Festival? What makes BfFF different from other fashion film festivals?
We decided to start working on the BfFF shortly after Lisa (co-founder) and I began with our events and sales agency FIER man-agement. That was in 2010. We then met Frank Funke, founder of the film production company H & F Furore, and we decided to partner up. That's how we started with the first edition. For our second edition we partnered up with Ulf Switalski, founder of the PR agen-cy Omundo Media, as our aim was to break away from fashion film's current niche sta-

tus and make it a mainstream phenomenon. The thing is, on one hand it's exciting being part of something that is growing and devel-oping before your eyes, but on the other hand you have to work twice as hard as, in some ways, you have to first of all tell your audi-ence about fashion film itself, rather than you as a festival. In the past year I have seen a lot of fash-ion film festivals coming up. I see that as a positive sign, because this shows that the awareness for this genre is spreading. We have been contacted by some of them, and we are always open to collaborations. Of course, every fashion film festival has its own personal identity, and it's important to retain that. Being the Berlin fashion Film Festival carries a lot of weight, as you are effectively representing a city renowned for its film background, creative flair, and out-standing events. We see ourselves as the creatives rebels of the fashion film festivals, focusing on the quality of the curated films, selected jury, and event production.

I LIKE THIS GIRL by Henrik Jessen
# Does Fashion Film always focus on fash-ion in itself?
Fashion film, as many have said before me, is still in its infancy. There are still no precise boundaries as to what a fashion film is. Obviously, for it to be a fashion film its theme has to be fashion, but how the theme is interpreted is flexible. To answer this I would like to quote Christian Staub, last year's winner for Best Cinema-tography at the Berlin Fashion Film Festival 2013, in one of our interviews. In response to "How important is fashion in relation to the story you tell in your works? What role does it play?", he said:"It’s inspiration, first and foremost. It’s the point of origin for the film, but if it doesn’t send you in an unexpected direction, if you just try to recreate the fashion through cinematic means… Well, you’ll get either something soulless and cold and boring or something very commercial and kitsch. Take a really good music video, for example.
Remember the works of Cunningham or Jonze? I think every fantastic music video is fantastic, because it takes a core aspect of the song, but expands itself and adds a whole new creative dimension to it."
# Why did you decide on fashion film and not fashion photography? How important is fashion film?
Fashion photography is something that is embedded within the fashion world. Fash-ion film on the other hand is something rel-atively new, something people are still not entirely familiar with. This is why we decid-ed to go down the fashion film path, because there is still so much potential out there, and it's only going to get bigger. That's the rea-son behind the Berlin fashion Film Festival; with so much content out there, we want to create a point of reference for professional in the advertising, fashion, and film indus-try, something they can refer to in relation to quality fashion film productions.
# What chances will come with fashion film in the next few years?
It's hard to say how it's going to devel-op. With this year's submissions I have really noticed an exploration of fashion film as an interactive medium, something used to play with the clothing and collections. I think this is one of the direction fashion film is taking.
# Fashion Film or Fashion Photography? What will be more relevant for the fashion industry in the future?
Well, that's not within my power to know. It depends on how technology develops, on how people continue to interact with differ-ent kinds of media, and what will bring the most benefits to the designers, filmmakers and contributing artists. I don't necessarily see them as competitors.
# You received about 700 submissions this year. How long does the decision-making process take and who is spoilt for choice?
Watching 700 films multiple times it's without doubt a time-consuming activi-ty. But also very exciting. The whole pro-cess, from watching the films and allocat-ing points, to sorting short-lists, presenting them to the jury, dealing with their score, and turning it all into a strong and solid film pro-gramme, probably took us a good 5 months, give or take. It's something we don't cut cor-ners with, as it's the core of the Berlin fash-ion Film Festival.
# What was the most inspiring submission you received this year?
This really depends on whom you ask from the team. We all come from very differ-ent background (fashion, film, PR, market-

ing) which is what makes the BfFF film pro-gramme solid. I was particularly keen on Snake by Gustavo Lopez Mañas. I felt the overall the film had something very Berlin about it, combined with an amazing female cast, soundtrack, and cinematography. And of course, it did remind me of one my favour-ite films - True Romance.
# There always is a presentation at the end of the award show. Why did you decide on Russian artist Andrey Bartenev for this years’ presentation?
You can't take away the live element of a fashion show. With every edition we look for something outstanding, something dif-ferent, something that similarly to fashion film breaks the boundaries of what is tra-ditionally accepted as fashion. We saw this in our first year with Tom Van der Borght, last year with Charlie Le Mindu, and this year Andrey Bartenev also promises to put on a spectacular show.
# What will BfFF be like in 5 years?
Hard to say. In a mere three editions we have managed to become one of the leading fashion film festivals. In an another five who knows how far we will have got. Our aim as a festival is promote the fashion film genre as a whole, giving new opportunities to fash-ion designers, filmmakers and all contribut-ing artists. I have started noticing how fash-ion film is something that is starting to be taught at universities across the world, and I think this is great! How we will change in the next five year also depends on how fashion film develops. And the BfFF wants to play an active role in shaping the industry.
