Public Safety Building Ground Breaking
Supervisor Malia Cohen joined Mayor Lee, Board PresidentDavid Chiu, Department of Public Works (DPW) Director Nuru, San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) Chief Suhr,San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) Chief Hayes-White,and the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency (SFRA)Executive Director, Fred Blackwell on September 8th for thegroundbreaking ceremony of the Public Safety Building (PSB)which will serve as the new home of the SFPD headquarters.The PSB is a partnership project between DPW, SFPD,SFFP, and the SFRA. It is funded by the Earthquake Safety
and Emergency Response Bond Program. Construction isscheduled to begin in October 2011 with an expectedcompletion date of most of the facility of March 2014. ThePSB will include a fire station to better serve the growingcommunity. The building will be located on Third Street andMission Rock. For more information, visitwww.sfearthquakesafety.org .

The Plumbers & Pipefitters U.A. Local 38 celebrated theopening of the Joseph P. Mazzola Training Center Building on
2660 Newhall Street in Bayview. This new school will be a jobtraining center for building and trades.
201st Anniversary of Mexico’s IndependenceCelebrated in San Francisco
Honoring Mexico's 201st Anniversary of Independence,Supervisor Cohen joined the Mexican Consul General Ambassador Carlos Felix and his wife, Eun Hai Kim-Felix at
the San Francisco Art Institute on September 16th
. On thesame day in 1810, Roman priest Miguel Hidalgo proclaimedthe beginning of Mexico’s War of Independence through aspeech that became known as El Grito de Dolores or "Cry of Dolores". Today, the event is commonly referred to as "ElGrito" and is one of Mexico's most celebrated nationalholidays.

Ghana Trade Delegation Reception
A delegation of Ghana’s distinguished government officials,
business men and women visited the Bay Area to discusspotential business partnerships that would foster economicgrowth in both regions. This year, Ghana was listed as theworld’s fastest growing economy. The Ghana TradeDelegation hosted a reception on September 16th at theMuseum of African Diaspora, where Supervisor Cohenrecognized their leadership and discussed potential economicendeavors.
San Francisco Firefighter’s 5th AnnualJohnny V. Chili Cook-Off
The San Francisco Fire Department hosted the 5 th AnnualJohnny V. Chili Cook-Off on September 17th where, in additionto making great chili, they provided toys to children and raised$10,000 for the toy program. District 10’s very own FireStation 9 received the 1st runner-up title in the cook-off.

Unite Potrero: Community Walk
On a sunny Saturday afternoon, the Potrero Hill residentscame together for the “Unite Potrero: Community Walk”,where Supervisor Cohen was honored to kick-off the event atthe Potrero Hill Library. The event was organized by Potreroresidents and nearby neighbors with the goal of gatheringresidents from the Potrero Hill and its surroundingcommunities to go on a walk through the neighborhood. Approximately 50 people joined the event which doubled insize by the end of the walk. In addition, the event includedarts & crafts and a movie showing. “It was so wonderful to seethe large group walking past the future site of the TexasStreet garden and sharing stories about their experiences inthe neighborhood. The arts and crafts activities and the free
movie at the NABE were also a hit, with approximately 100adults and kids taking advantage of the fun,” said EmilyWeinstein, a Community Builder for the Rebuild Potreroproject from BRIDGE Housing Corporation.

Parents, teachers, students, and community leaders came
together on September 17th to wash cars, sell baked goods,
food and host a swap meet at Starr Kind Elementary in
Potrero Hill. The event raised a total of $2,400.
ARTSFEST 4 in Bayview
ARTSFEST is a grassroots volunteer-run organization that
showcases artists and musicians. Originating in Bayview
Hunters Point, the group has now expanded across the Bay
Area. This year, ARTSFEST 4, the 4th Annual Arts Festival
was celebrated on Fairfax Street in Bayview. The event
included local blues musicians, entertainment, food, andcommunity information tables.

Free MUNI for Youth Gains Momentum

The Free MUNI for Youth Coalition held a press conference inthe steps of City Hall on September 20th. The pressconference had a turnout of approximately 200 people whichincluded youth, parents, advocates, the San Francisco
Municipal Transportation Agency, the San Francisco UnifiedSchool District, and supporting Supervisors Malia Cohen,John Avalos, Jane Kim, Ross Mirkarimi, and Eric Mar. Theresolution would provide free monthly MUNI Fast Passes toyouth between the ages of 5 and 17 and is expected to bepresented at the City Operations & Neighborhood ServicesCommittee in early October and move on for a vote before theBoard of Supervisors meeting later in the month.
Foreclosure Crisis Press Conference
In response to the foreclosure crisis affecting SanFranciscans, Assessor-Recorder Phil Ting, Supervisors MaliaCohen, John Avalos and Ross Mirkarimi joined communitygroups Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment(ACCE) and the California Reinvestment Coalition (CRC) for a press conference on September 22nd at City Hall. Accordingto a report by ACCE and CRC, the neighborhoods in District10 suffered a total of 3,104 foreclosures between 2008 and2012. The representatives called for legislative action thatwould support homeowners facing foreclosure and holdaccountable those banks whose practices helped create thecrisis.

San Francisco Awarded Gold Walk-Friendly CommunityWalk Friendly Communities, sponsored by The U.S.Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration, is a national program that recognizescommunities’ commitment to pedestrian safety. The
Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center for walkabilityinitiatives designated the city of San Francisco as a GoldWalk-Friendly Community. Mayor Edwin Lee and the SanFrancisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA)announced the recognition on September 22nd at a pressconference. Ten communities were recognized in the mostrecent announcement by Walk-Friendly Communities. TheWalk-Friendly Community designation, which is awarded frombronze to platinum, is awarded to communities thatdemonstrate their dedication to walkability and pedestriansafety through comprehensive programs, plans and policies.
So far 21 communities in the U.S. have been designated asWalk Friendly Communities. For more information on WalkFriendly Communities, please visithttp://www.walkfriendly.org.
Crisis Pregnancy Centers Legislation Hearing Supervisor Cohen’s introduction of legislation that wouldprohibit Pregnancy Centers from advertising pregnancy-related services that knowingly and intentionally mislead
potential clients went before the City Operations &Neighborhood Services Committee on September 26th.Supporters and opponents of the legislation provided their input during public comment; after consideration from thecommittee, the legislation is tentative for a vote before the fullBoard of Supervisors on October 18th. According toSupervisor Cohen, “this legislation would prohibit theselimited service pregnancy centers in San Francisco frommisleading the public about the services they perform. It’s ameasured, thoughtful approach that balances the free speechrights of anti-abortion activists with constitutionally protected
reproductive rights for women”.

Sentencing Commission &Recidivism Ordinance Introduction
In an attempt to address realignment legislation at the statelevel that took effect on October 1st, District Attorney GeorgeGascón, Supervisors Scott Weiner and Malia Cohen, with thesupport of Paul Henderson in the Mayor’s Office, and PublicDefender Jeff Adachi, announced at a press conference onSeptember 27th the introduction of the SentencingCommission and Recidivism Reduction Ordinance which waspresented at the Board of Supervisors meeting the same day.The ordinance calls for a comprehensive review of sentencingapproaches and strategies by the Sentencing Commission inorder to develop standards that will reduce recidivism. Withpassage of the ordinance, it is expected that the Sentencing
Commission will provide the Mayor and Board of Supervisorswith recommendations on alternatives to incarcerations thatwould ideally result in budgetary savings to the city and adecrease in crime.
Legislation Introduced for Settlement Funds fromClosure of Mirant Potrero Power PlantOn September 27th Supervisor Cohen introduced legislationto appropriate the $1 million that the City of San Franciscoreceived in settlement funds from the closure of the Mirant
Potrero Power Plant in 2009. Earlier this year, the Power Plant Task Force and Asthma Task Force submittedrecommendations that would facilitate funding for Cityprograms to promote indoor air quality, physical activity for District 10 residents, support community garden projects andprovide funding for an educational program for asthmatreatment and prevention.

Experience CorpsExperience Corps, an award-winning intergenerationaltutoring and mentoring program, is currently seeking
volunteers ages 55 and older to support students in literacy ingrades K-3 at 13 San Francisco public schools. The programhas a track record of not only boosting students’ academicperformance, but also of improving the health and well-beingof older adults in the process. “There’s no shortage of older adults – nearly 10,000 Americans turn 60 every day – and noshortage of kids who need help. We’re working to put thesetwo generations together,” says Lester Strong, the program’sCEO. Volunteers are asked to commit for one full school year for a minimum of four hours per week. No tutoring experienceis needed, and training is provided. Volunteers are especially
