What is Windows XP Mode in Windows 7?

Windows XP Mode in Windows 7 is a Windows XP Pro SP 3 Virtual Image that runs in the latest version of Microsofts Virtual PC software. This Windows XP Pro SP 3

image uses the license with the Windows 7 host, and is a downloadable add-on for Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise.

Does Windows XP Mode comes standard with Windows 7?

Windows XP Mode in Windows 7 is a downloadable add-on, it is not installed by default. The download link is the following:

Why were Rockwell Automation products tested with Windows XP Mode in Windows 7?

Some Rockwell Automation products, including older versions, do not yet support Windows 7 64-bit operating systems. The main goal of this testing was to provide an

option for customers upgrading their engineering workstation / laptop to a Windows 7 64-bit Operating System. Windows XP Mode in Windows 7 should not be used in a

production environment to host any run-time products; it should only be used with Rockwell Automation application development products like FactoryTalk View Studio,

PanelBuilder32, and RSLogix5000.

There are two issues related to the CPR9 SR3 release of the FactoryTalk Services Platform (FTSP). One issue is related to installing FTSP in the Windows XP Mode

image, and the other issue is related to using Windows XP Mode Unity mode when running the image.

Issue 1: The default Windows XP Mode settings will cause error messages from FTSP that the FactoryTalk Directory cannot be configured from a remote client when

you try to perform the installation.

To avoid this, select Disable Integration Features from the Windows XP Mode Tools menu before installing FTSP. To access the Tools menu make sure the XP mode is

not in Full Screen. Once installation is complete, a user can use FTSP normally with Disable Integration Features still selected.

Issue 2: Post installation, the use of Windows XP Mode Unity, or communications with the host PC, may be desired. Enable Integration Features must be selected for

either of these two operations. Since it has been disabled as part of Issue 1 (above,) follow these steps to enable it once again.

Launch FactoryTalk Administration Console from Start -> Programs -> Rockwell Software.1.

Select Network Directory.2.

Add the host PC computer name to the FactoryTalk Directory (FactoryTalk Directory -> System -> Computers and Groups -> Computers) or disable the "Require

computer accounts for all client machines" setting in FactoryTalk Policies (FactoryTalk Directory -> System -> System Policies -> Security Policy)

Once those changes are made, select Enable Integration Features from the Windows XP Mode Tools menu.

Caution: If these steps are notperformedbefore selecting Enable Integration Features from the Windows XP Mode Tools menu,the FactoryTalk Directory will

become locked out.

The Factor yTalk Servi ces Platform (FTSP) v2.30 (SR 3) requires settin g changes (see abov e.) Will thes e be requir ed in future vers ions of t he FTSP?

FTSP v2.40 is being modified to allow a remote client installation. This change will allow the user to skip the install related change described above.

What is Unity Mode in Windo ws XP Mode?

There are two modes in Windows XP Mode: Desktop Mode and Unity Mode.

Desktop Mode involves running the XP Image in a separate window.

Unity Mode involves running the programs in the XP Image as if they were installed on the host Windows 7 operating system. The programs are available under the

Windows 7 Start Menu.

Thus, in Unity mode, the program appears to run natively in Windows 7.

How is thi s different than VMWare Workstation?

With Windows XP Mode in Windows 7, Microsoft is providing a free copy of Windows XP Pro SP3 for use. While VMWare Workstation offers the user more ways to

configure a Virtual Image, it has a separate license cost.

How do I u se a USB Dongle with t he FactoryTalk Activ ation Manager in XP Mode?

Installation and setup of the USB Dongle drivers for use in XP Mode is more involved than in native Windows 7 or Windows XP. Skip the installation of the HASP drivers

when installing the Activation Manager, and refer to 67561 - 9509-USBDONG:Using a USB Dongle for activation in Windows 7 XP mode.

Do Node-Locked activations work in XP Mode?

No, Node-Locked activations will not work properly within XP Mode, because XP Mode is accessed through a terminal service within Windows 7, which is not supported

for Node-Locked activations.
