Despite her mother-in-law’s urging, she couldn’t find the desire to walk away. To return to a life she no longer knew, to a family she no longer belonged to. In that moment it became clear what the right decision was.

She reached out, held her mother-in-law’s hand, and with boldness declared, “Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.” R U T H 1 : 1 6

In the biblical story of Ruth, we see a beautiful example of what a strong support system looks like. Ruth and Naomi took the oppor-tunity to support one another because they trusted each other and God’s plan for their lives.

Establishing trust and support between you and another person becomes a lot easier when the relationship is centered around meaningful interactions and a unified cause. This is especially true when it comes to Christ-centered support raising. In this guide, we’re going to take a deeper look at the biblical principles that make support raising a blessing to all involved.

Her heart pounded in her chest as tears rolled down her face.

let’s debunk a few common myths about support raising.

First,

When Christ’s love guides what you do, others will notice. Many people are happy to support a project they see as being genuine, authentic, and impactful. By asking someone for their support, you are giving them the opportunity to get involved with a mission program that they are equally passionate about or that they may never have heard about otherwise.

It’s a burden to others when I ask them for support.

Myth 1Plans fail for a lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.

Sure, maybe you have the means to cover the costs yourself, but by doing so, other people are denied the opportunity to use the gifts they’ve been given to support a gospel-motivated endeavor. This is what separates your work from other fundraising efforts, because support raising is about far more than just money.

In the end, it doesn’t matter how much people donate. When you have a team of supporters pray-ing for you and encouraging you, the blessings are ten-fold! While funds might get a project started, you cannot buy the love and support that Christian brothers and sisters can give.

I can cover the cost myself, so there’s no reason to raise support.

Myth 2 I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your part-nership in the gospel from the first day until now.

P H I L I P P I A N S 1 : 3 - 5

It is easy to fall into the line of thinking that says, “My money is mine because I earned it,” but we graciously have what we do because it is a gift from God.

Everyone uses their gifts in different ways, and some might see your project as an opportunity to use their gifts to serve Him. This is why there is no pressure when you ask for support. People will either decide to use their gifts for your project or they will choose to support something else.

If they decline, they aren’t saying no to you, they are simply saying they want to use God’s gifts to serve in a different way. When telling others about your mission project, your main goal should be just that—telling people about an opportunity for them to support God’s work here on earth.

It’s not appropriate for me to tell other people what to do with their money.

Myth 3Every good and perfect gift is from above.

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others,

as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms… so that in all things God

may be praised through Jesus Christ.

Here are 5 simple steps to build your support team.

Write down what you plan to do on this mission project and why you are passionate about this specific need. Be honest with yourself about your reasons for wanting to do it—the more you understand and can verbalize your passion for the project, the easier it will be to share it with others in a comfortable, authentic way. Your reason for serving is unique to your life experiences so don’t be shy to share your story and what led you to serve!

Call close friends and family members and find time to get together with them over coffee, pizza, or gelato—you know them best. On the phone, let them know you would love to tell them a little bit about your exciting mission opportunity (don’t give away too much, or there won’t be a reason to meet) and that you would like to ask them to join your support team.

3At your get-togethers, share your personal story with them. Tell them why this project is important to you, about the people that are being helped, and why you want to be involved. Don’t worry, talking about your plans in a casual setting will put you both at ease and your passion will naturally shine through.

After sharing your story and how you want to take action, ask if they would like to join your support team. Let them know that they can support you through prayers, dona-tions, and encouragement.

4 Regardless of their decision, offer to add them to your prayer list and encourage them to share specific prayer requests with you. Take time each week to pray for those you have met with. Remember, if they say no, they are simply choosing to use the gifts they have been given in a different avenue.

5 As people join your support team, share regular updates with them and make sure to maintain those relationships. Showing appreciation and gratitude to those who sup-ported you go a long way, both during the project and when it is finished.
