Initial SituationMany fleet operating companies are in demand to fulfill the operating costs of their fleet as cost effective as possible. In doing so, they use the possibility of concerted collocation of their fleets and negotiations of purchase conditions in the areas of vehicle purchase/leasing, tires, fuel and insurances in order to provide the company mobility at optimized financial expenses.

Initial SituationIn some cases training measures such as driving safety training or energy saving manner of driving instructions are used to influence the driving behavior of the driver. At the time being these measures are used by only a few fleet operating companies. In most instances neither the efficiency nor the sustainability of the learned skills is assured.

Aim of RECODRIVE is to achieve a sustainability

in the area of environmental protection. Therefore

it is necessary to develop an integrated concept for

the entire Fleet management The individual

divisions aim their activies and strategies at the

sustainability of the CO2-reduction. This project develops

possibilities for incentive- and award systems for the

employees to achieve a lasting CO2- reduction.

• introduce a reporting and bonus system for drivers that results in a significant, immediate, and lasting reduction in company’s fuel costs and CO2 emissions

• improve driving safety, cutting accident rates and damage costs and reduce the costs of vehicle wear.

• Requirements for professional drivers policies acc. To ISO14001/EMAS are fulfilled.

The aim is to set up a rewarding scheme for those drivers who consequently apply the new driving style and save fuel. For each driver a presetting is defined based upon the fuel consumption of the previous year. Drivers meeting the presetting will be rewarded.

As a side effect of the entire project further cost reductions in other parts of the entire fleet are. These are basically:

• Reduction of tire abrasion• Reduction of Brake and Clutch deterioration• Considerable decline of number of claims in the array of accidents

and minor losses.

Extract of training materials eco-driving

• Before starting the engine attend all necessary preparations• (buckle up, adjust mirrors, turn on radio etc)• Start the engine without pushing the accelerator• speed up quickly and shift in time ( appr. At 1.500 to 2.000 rpm ).

Try never to go beyond 2.000 rpm• Always use the highest possible gear (low speed, but not in low

revs. This also applies when driving uphill• Drive with a steady speed, instead of breaking or speeding.• Instead of using the breaks, let the car roll to a stand. Use the

throttle cut off. Keep the car in the highest possible gear when approaching traffic lights, intersections or going downhill. This way you achieve the churn pressure in opposition to idling the engine.

• Always drive foresighted and constant. Keep an additional safety cushion to the driver in front, so you don’t have to use the breaks when the traffic slows down. When waiting in front of traffic lights, railroad crossing etc, always turn off the engine

• Turn off not used gadgets (Air Condition, fans, rear window heater etc). Increase the tire pressure as indicated in the manual and control it periodically (choose the highest indicated value)

• Remove all unnecessary dead freight (snow chains, sand bags, tool boxes etc.) 100kg weight reduction equals 0,3l less fuel consumption

• Remove roof racks or rear racks immediately after use. In principle: closed boxes are better than open systems.

• Have your car checked at regular intervals, clogged air filters, exhausted sparking plugs and badly adjusted engines increase the consumption considerably.

In order to identify the CO2- and fuel cost drivers at first an inventory of the actual fleet has to be made. Most enterprises work with a hierarchic break down of vehicle classes which is layed down in the Car policy. The motivation factor must not be underestimated. A further aspect is the type of application of the vehicle.You have to differ between a pure operating fleet (assembly) mixed operating and motivation fleet (field staff) and motivation fleet (executives).

The following options to exercise influence via the Car Policy are possible:

Configuration of the Car Policy– Task 3 -4 Evaluate/ Improve

In order to evaluate the achievements two facets are feasible:

• Firsthand rating (before/after) of the fuel savings due to driving performance

• Rating of the entire Company by fuel consumption development per driven Kilometer

• The difference of the direct fuel saving in comparison to the data of the entire Company can be proved through the achieved saving due to technical equipment and motor size reduction.
