When I arrived in 2006 it became very clear to me that at Sidney is a College of great musical potential. The chapel struck me as one of the finest mid-size chapels in either Oxford or Cambridge; it just needed a few ‘musical’ touches here and there. During the past five years we have designed and installed new choir stalls (complete with candles, ‘pheoned’ brass fixtures and LED underlighting), and with the help of our generous supporters we acquired some of the finest keyboard instruments in Cambridge, including a Steinway ‘Model D’ concert grand and a Meitke

‘Bach’ harpsichord. We will shortly be installing a new historical chamber organ designed by the American builders Taylor & Boody. The Choir has made some acclaimed recordings and has mixed with some of the world’s top musicians, including the viol consort Fretwork, the harpist Andrew Lawrence-King, the brass ensemble QuintEssential and our Composer in Residence, the Grammy-winning Eric Whitacre. Sidney Choir now ranks among the top mixed choirs in Cambridge, and enjoys an enviable reputation at home and abroad. Nonetheless, there remain two major projects that will secure the future of the choir for a great many years to come: the installation of our main concert and congregational organ, and the endowment of the Chapel Choir.

To this end we hope to interest alumni in supporting Music at Sidney and becoming a Friend of Sidney Choir. We very much hope to welcome you to Sidney Sussex College in the near future!

Dr David SkinnerOsborn Director of Music

Sidney Sussex College rose from the ruins of the Cambridge Greyfriars in 1596 and

has long been a nest for professional musicians.

With the generous support of alumni and friends, Music at Sidney is flourishing.

The large chapel that stood on this site in pre-Reformation times was the regular venue for University ceremonies and where a number of early English composers took their degrees.

The great Elizabethan composer William Byrd would have been well-known to our Foundress, Lady Frances Sidney, and indeed two very fine elegies by Byrd survive for her nephew, the poet and courtier Sir Philip Sidney.

Sidney today prides itself in being an open and friendly environment for music-making at a very high level among those reading a variety of subjects.

The College boasts an active Music Society which organizes weekly chamber recitals with guest appearances. Uniquely in either

Oxford or Cambridge, Sidney sings two Choral Evensongs and one Latin Vespers each week during termtime.

The internationally acclaimed composer Eric Whitacre was a Visiting Fellow at Sidney Sussex in 2010, and has been appointed to a five-year post at Sidney as ‘Composer in Residence’. Eric is a regular visitor to Sidney and teaches conducting as part of the University’s new MMus Choral Conducting. Sidney is proud to be associated with Eric, who won a GRAMMY in 2012 for his album ‘Light and Gold’ in the Best Choral Performance category.

Dr David Skinner was appointed as the College’s first Director of Music thanks to a transformative donation from John Osborn (Classics 1963) to enable the endowment of this position. This in itself has enabled us to make great progress with embedding the choral tradition and attracting choral scholars, composers and other supporters to Sidney.

In addition to organ and choral scholarships, the College supports a number of music awards annually. There are also a number of dedicated funds that support Music at Sidney, including the Powell Arts Fund , the Waldemann Family Jazz Fund and the Charles Larkum Fund for Music.

The Choir is unique in either Oxford or Cambridge to have been awarded ‘CD of the Month & Editor’s Choice’

by Gramophone Magazine within the last decade.

The College has identified two major projects to further support Music at Sidney and ensure a sustainable choral programme for future generations:

• Funding for a new chapel organ from a design by the Dutch firm ‘Flentrop’

• Provision of a dedicated endowment for the Chapel Choir to support new music, singing lessons, concerts and international tours

Additionally, we are always seeking support for future recording projects, involving the Chapel Choir and other musicians in innovative programmes from the 16th century to modern times.

My experience at Sidney gave me the desire to try and capture in my compositions the spirit that I found in the Chapel and to dig deeper into European musical history and style. The culture and atmosphere at Sidney Sussex College is incredibly stimulating and has led me into a period of prolific writing. I can declare it truly life-changing.

Singing with Sidney Choir gives usso many great opportunities. I neverwould have thought that in my threeyears I’d get the chance to sing in theUSA, Dubai, Italy, Spain, or the snowyhills of Austria.
