• Several experts (Scientists from Universities & National research

institutions and experts from other institutions, like ministries,

governmental agencies, etc..) working on the field of BES

• In the field of BES, the link between science & research and the

science/policy interface and is still weak

• Lack of networks to bring together these experts, and of effective

science/policy interface in the region for IPBES developments

• Two approaches to overcome this issue in the region: Annual regionalworkshops and web-based information platform

Annual Workshops and web-based information platform with West African

Annual Workshops and web-based information platform with West African

Biodiversity and Ecosystem Service (BES) Experts: GOALS

• Provide tools and activities for the produ tio a d i tegratio of assessments, in particular sub-/regional assessments on biodiversity and

e os ste servi es IPBES objective 2

• Build dis ipli ar a d i terdis ipli ar apa ities for the ati assess e ts and couple to their regional analogs.

IPBES objective 3

• Improve communication between West African countries and IPBES,

facilitate outreach and dissemination of the assessments, and develop local

capacities necessary to engage in national, regional and international

science-policy processes

IPBES objective 4

Annual Workshops and web-based information platform with West African

Biodiversity and Ecosystem Service (BES) Experts: WHAT?

Development of a curriculum and

establishment of a MSc program in Côte

d‘Ivoire

WABESSupporting the West African contribution to the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)

MSC PROGRAM - WHY?• West Africa: hotspot of biodiversity, strong impact of climate change, strong interdependency betweenbiodiversity and human development

• Growing need of inter/transdisciplinary research and integrativescience-policy interaction in order to approach environmentalproblems and sustainable development

• So far, only few academic curricula on the science-policy interface on BES exist in the region

• IPBES work plan is still largely unknown and not integrated in West African developement strategies

• Regional contribution to IPBES still underrepresented in respect to the relevance of West Afri a s BES, at scientific and political levels

WABESSupporting the West African contribution to the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)

• 2-year master program (M1 & M2)

• 15 students from as many as possible

of the 15 ECOWAS countries/batch

• Target audience:

• BES and other environmental sciences undergraduates students

• BES professionals (park managers, administration, private sectors, orga izatio s…

• IPBES experts or/and stakeholders

• Master degree of UFHB in collaboration with international key players in BES, such as ZEF/UniBonn, WCMC/UNEP, UFZ, WASCAL, AUA/CEA, and others

MSC PROGRAM - WHERE?

WABESSupporting the West African contribution to the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)

• Prepare experts on BES to take part in the IPBES process

• Technical skills and methods to contribute the assessments

• Strengthen inter- and transdisciplinary thinking in universityeducation to create a new generation of scientists to tackleenvironmental challenges (biodiversity erosion, climateha ge…

• Create professionals for the implementation of the SDGs

• Translate research into policy action at the science/policyinterface
