This challenge is designed to boost the competitiveness of the European transport industry and achieve a European transport system that is resource-efficient, environmentally-friendly, as well as safe and seamless for the benefit of all citizens, the economy and society.

The European Commission’s Innovation and Networks Executive Agency (INEA) is in charge of managing parts of this challenge for a total amount of €2.9 billion over seven years.

Of the €2.9 billion, €139 million will be available for aviation projects in 2016-2017 under the Mobility for Growth call.

There are further funding opportunities in the field of aviation research, such as air traffic management research supported by the SESAR Joint Undertaking (http://www.sesarju.eu).

Horizon 2020 Transport research

Horizon 2020, the EU’s €77 billion research and innovation programme for 2014-2020, is investing €6.3 billion to address the ‘Smart, green and integrated transport’ societal challenge.

Horizon 2020 Transport research

Aviation in Horizon 2020Research and innovation under this topic focusses on maintaining and extending the European industrial leadership in aeronautics while addressing the citizen and business needs for improved transport services, as well as covering safety, security and environmental concerns.

Parts of the ‘Smart, green and integrated transport’ societal challenge support international cooperation on specific topics, including aviation.

• Sustain the leadership of the European aviation sector

• Improve the quality and responsiveness of air transportation services, as well as integrate them better with other transport modes

• Protect the environment and the energy supply to counterbalance the adverse impact of air transport growth

• Ensure safety and security both on board and on the ground

• Support breakthrough innovation in civil aviation

The Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) finances projects to complete the missing links in Europe’s energy, transport and digital backbone. In the 2014-2020 period, INEA will manage CEF projects worth €22.4 billion to promote clean, smart, sustainable and fully interconnected transport in Europe.

Part of the CEF Transport funding covers the deployment of SESAR, a research and development project for Single European Sky air traffic management (ATM). SESAR will receive up to €2.5 billion to modernise ATM in Europe towards a high performing ATM infrastructure that will enable safe, efficient and environmentally friendly European air transport.

In 2015 CEF is expected to invest up to €815 million in grants supporting the SESAR project. Additional funds will be made available through financial instruments.

More details on CEF funding for transport are available on http://ec.europa.eu/inea and at the CEF Transport Information Day organised by INEA in Brussels on 30 November 2015.
