Secretary Preface We present to you this Annual Report for 2013/14 We have presented you with acknowledgment of all our supporters and sponsors. We eventually had handover of our new building at the start of the season. Congratulations to our members for the hard work moving in all our equipment and gear, which was professionally coordinated by Phil Hogan. The Area Captains worked hard during the season under the guidance of Sonja Smith to get the storage area into a workable area. This is still ongoing. We have been privileged to build in a new patrol tower thanks to the support of West Beach Community Bank who have been supporting our club and the community for many years. This tower gives us the ability for our patrols to have better vision of the beach and look for any dangers out to sea. Also the support of the Government of South Australia and the City of Charles Sturt was appreciated as this new building is now a great asset to the community The club has now a professional bar with a full Club License which is enjoyed by our members and the public who support us. A lot of hard work by the House Committee is ensuring the right formula is found to make it a business making a profit to pay back our loans and utilities in running the club and not lose the club great atmosphere. Special thanks to Mark Travers, Joe Bayer and Phil Hogan in helping with your professionalism. The social media by the use of Facebook and the Club Website is proving to be a valuable tool to communicating to the members and the public. President’s Foreword Welcome to our Annual Report for 2013/2014 which, after so many long years of waiting is presented to members at the first AGM to be held in our new multimillion dollar clubrooms. This is our club’s 89th Annual Report and it is so pleasing to note that the club is in such a strong position on so many fronts; our patrols remain at a very high standard, our member numbers are now over 700 (almost 20% more than last year), we remain financially strong and the general enthusiasm of members is at a very high level. We have included my address from the opening ceremony in this report to provide a background to just some of the issues we had to deal with in reaching completion and to recognise some of the key people involved. We were fortunate to have The Premier of South Australia the Honourable Jay Weatherill MP – a former Nipper at Henley open the building on 8th October 2013. We also had the Mayor of The of the City of Charles Sturt Kirsten Alexander, Federal Member for Hindmarsh Matt Williams, local MP Paul Caica, also a member, Robert Brokenshire MP representing Stephen Marshall Leader of the State Opposition and John Baker, President of Surf Life Saving South Australia, and Elaine Farmer CEO of Surf Life Saving South Australia. The representation from the politicians and Mayor indicates the respect our Club has within the South Australian Community. We thank our members for their patience and understanding during the extended waiting period for demolition and construction, and although we had expected to be in the new building years ago, the end product has been well worth the wait and is something that we should all be extremely proud of. For the Building Committee and Management Committee we had expected the pressure to be eased somewhat once we opened the doors, however we found ourselves in possession of an asset very much in demand due to its profile and location and were inundated with bookings for private hire and functions whilst trying to set up the building for our own uses. The demand proved overwhelming and we were fortunate to have some experienced members (Phil Hogan, Kevin Fitzgerald, Mark Travers, Joe Bayer and Barry Duhne) volunteer for the House Committee. Phil, Kevin and Mark already had other very demanding roles within the club and we are very fortunate that their passion for the club to succeed saw them take on this additional responsibility. The facility now demands that it be run as a business with all the financial and legal responsibilities that go with that and this in turn places more pressure on our office bearers. Our Junior division continues to grow stronger with more children and their families joining us and enjoying the family friendly atmosphere we present. Our unique fundraiser, The West Beach Community Bank Big Row was another success in February with over $70,000 raised and we thank all our fabulous sponsors, support boat owners, our support team back home and of course the rowers for their support and commitment to this essential event. Special thanks to Carly Lutze who organised the event and all the participants while working about 3500 kilometres away. We also thank Rob Hammond as Sponsorship Manager for coordinating our sponsors and bringing in several new corporates this year.


I doubt that most members understand the time spent by the Management Committee, Junior Committee, Junior Age Group Leaders, Area Captains, coaches, Vice Captain and clothing shop volunteers, along with our extremely dedicated Training Team in carrying out their roles and we are most fortunate to have all these people doing such a magnificent job for the benefit of all of us. At this Annual General Meeting I finish a 12 year stint as Club President and I’m very proud of what we have all achieved over the past decade or so, and we have a very strong base now to grow even stronger. Thank you again to all our volunteer members, our families, friends and all our supporters for bringing us to this point. Our Club is now 89 years old and there will no doubt be birthday celebrations around 1st October 2015 to celebrate our 90th. It’s up to all of us to ensure that as custodians we protect the club name and ensure that we maintain the level of respect we now hold in the community. And of course we must maintain the principal goal of ‘no lives lost’ in our patch.

Mr Premier Jay Weatherill, our loyal and Local State Member of Parliament Paul Caica, our Mayor Kirsten Alexander and fellow Councillors Jim Fitzpatrick and Angela Keneally, former Councillor Paul Sykes, CEO of the SA Fire and Emergency Services Commission David Place, The State President of SLSSA John Baker, Board Members of SLSSA, The members of the SLSSA Facilities Management Group whose role it is to oversee the redevelopment of the SLS clubs in SA, and the Directors of Kanini, the SLSSA trust fund from which we were able to borrow the $400,000 to complete the funding for the building, General Manager of SLSSA Elaine Farmer for her support throughout, and particularly for assisting to formulate a process that met the requirements of the State Government in securing the guarantee of our club funds during the construction period, and to the Presidents of our sister clubs here in SA. To Roland Greiner the Government appointed Project Manager. To Robert Brokenshire MP, representing Steven Marshall the Leader of the State Liberal Party, and Matt Williams, the new Federal Member for Hindmarsh. And to our amazing sponsors and supporters, we thank you most sincerely for your support, both financially and in kind that has helped us raise over $450,000 over the past decade as without that, we wouldn’t be standing in such a beautiful place today. It isn’t fair to single out some of you and not others, but I need to. To Andrew Farran and the Board members and staff of WBCB who have been magnificent supporters since our first Big Row 7 years ago. Their assistance now totals $137,000 including their Naming Rights commitment of $7,000 for Big Row number 8 next year. We couldn’t have done this without you. Well welcome everyone, to the day that at times we thought might never come. It’s been a long and bumpy road since we began this journey in earnest about 11 years ago. It’s been tedious, stressful, at times exciting, and at other times utterly demoralising. But we’ve been spurred on by our successes along the way and I can tell you we have also been angered by some of the hurdles we’ve encountered. We’ve met some wonderful people along the way; including elected Council members – both past and present, Council staff, various State Ministers and public servants in several Departments and of course in our sister Surf Life Saving Clubs and many of you are here today to share our joy. I can also tell you that we have met some other people along the way who I would not describe as wonderful. None of those people are here today to share our joy. This project was a ground breaker for the City of Charles Sturt in respect to the substantial financial assistance they provided to a Surf life Saving Club and we successfully lobbied many of the councillors in those early days to reach a terrific outcome through their $900,000. funding assistance. Although the State Government Emergency Services Trust Fund had helped several SLS clubs in their redevelopments prior to our project commencing, we did have early problems with other parties that caused delays – about 6 years worth of delays and we are extremely grateful for the patience shown by David Place and his SAFECOM team, and the Facilities Management Group in holding our position in the priority list of clubs needing redevelopment. One major issue that surfaced once our plans were lodged was a report written by officers of the Coast Protection Branch in which they warned of the effects of Global Warming – now Climate Change – and that if we rebuilt on this site, unbroken waves would flood this floor that we now stand on by the year 2060.


Their report basically said the club should not be rebuilt on the seafront and we realised that we had a serious problem then and there. Taking advice from some learned gentlemen we proceeded to lobby three key State Ministers for their support in January 2009; Minister for Planning Paul Holloway, Minister for Emergency Services Michael Wright, And the Minister for the Environment – one Jay Weatherill.All three Ministers gave their full support for the rebuild and we were on our way. That was four and a half years ago and it will take me until sunset tonight to tell you about all the issues we’ve had since then. I do want to mention one situation that arose just prior to the planned demolition date toward the end of 2011. It was discovered that a portion of the land we were to build on was still dedicated as a road, and that it would take up to 6 months for the wheels to turn for that land, and another small parcel to be re dedicated and included in our new plot. I think there were 3, maybe 4 Government departments plus The City of Charles Sturt involved in the process for that to happen. A crisis meeting was convened by Phil Harrison of SAFECOM with all parties in the one room and one of the positives I’ve thought about often in the two years since, is the spirit of co operation shown by each of the personnel from those entities to get that process over and done with in a hurry. It ended up taking only 3 weeks. We have to acknowledge Paul Caica again for his influence as Minister for the Environment at that time in bringing the efforts of a number of departments together so successfully. We tried to make this building as green as possible and were successful in being awarded a Federal Grant of $10,000 to install rainwater tanks. That was probably during 2009 and the Grant was to be acquitted by July the following year. I received many phone calls and emails from Canberra asking when the tanks were to be installed and the grant acquitted. Throughout 2009 and 2010 and part of 2011 I was telling them that the tanks will be installed next month. It was always next month. The next email said that they wanted the $5000 that they had already given us back – we definitely wouldn’t be getting the second $5000 and the grant was being withdrawn. It was only through the efforts and contacts of Steve Georganas – until recently our Federal Member – that we were able to retain the grant. And I can assure you that we have now installed the tanks. One of our next goals is to install solar panels once we have completed essential internal fit out items. OK that’s about all from me for the moment but before I go I’d like to acknowledge the support and trust the members have placed in me and my fellow Building Committee – Phil Hogan, Joe Bayer, Matt Simone and earlier on, Aaron Lewis. And my personal thanks to those guys for their expertise in their various fields – and for settling me down when I began to over heat. We all need to acknowledge Mark Travers for his enormous role in managing our finances, and Kevin Fitzgerald who has spent countless hours ensuring our Licence and Work Safe practices meet the various legislations. We have the building now and are very proud of it. We also have loans totalling $400,000 that need to be repaid and we look forward to the ongoing support of our sponsors and supporters in raising the money to do so, as that support will ensure that we can continue to fund our voluntary community services and the ongoing development of our members. This building will outlast all of us who have fought the fights to see it completed. It will outlast many of our young members just beginning their work as volunteers in our community. It is up to each and every one of us to look after this magnificent new facility to ensure it lasts well beyond that high tide in 2060. Thank you all again. Neville Fielder President

Club Captain Report

The 2013/14 season was one of many new experiences for our patrolling members. Coming out of a season where we patrolled from shipping containers on the foreshore, everyone was excited to begin discovering a new era of patrolling at Henley, and what a process of discovery it was. Even once we'd reached the end of the season, we were still attempting to learn the intricacies of our new clubrooms ‐ where to store all of the equipment, where to put our belongings and where to hide from the weather on inclement patrols ‐ but what a great experience this provided everyone as they worked together to develop our revised approach.

This season saw two IRB rescues during patrols and two on‐beach incidents outside of our patrol times, so whilst we consider our beach a relatively safe one we must continue to remember why we exist and what remains our primary purpose.

We had an increase in hours patrolled for the 2013/14 season ‐ across all of Henley's commitments there were 4,831.25 hours accrued in total; 3,213.25 of these were traditional beach patrol and 1,618.00 were water cover for our Juniors and other water safety events with which we were involved.

This represents an increase of an average 747.5 hours over the past two seasons' total patrolled hours, however with the growth in our patrolling membership we have actually seen a decrease in the number of hours each of our members have patrolled on average ‐ from 20.3 hours in 2011/12 to 19.7 hours in 2012/13 and 18.7 hours in 2013/14. I believe we can see a reinforcement of the old idiom 'many hands make light work' but also urge you all to not fall complacent, to keep your patrol commitments and volunteer where possible to ensure our patrolling remains enjoyable and 'light work'.

This coming season will see some changes introduced ‐ for example, mandatory life jackets to be worn at all times during IRB operation ‐ which will be expanded upon as more detail is available. We are also looking at an alternate approach to some aspects of patrol uniforms, patrol caps and hats and the storage of our patrol equipment. Please remember that all changes continue to be a learning experience and that both your patience and, equally, your feedback are always appreciated.

Finally, I wanted to convey my gratitude to our Vice‐Captain, Peter Oborn, who is moving overseas to pursue a new business opportunity and so won't be continuing as VC for the coming season. Peter has been such a positive influence on the club with his upbeat attitude, immense organisation and leadership qualities and an eagerness to be involved in as many aspects of the club as possible. Vice Captains Report

The 2013/14 patrolling season (Saturday 19th October 2013 to Sunday 30th March 2014) began with a great sense of anticipation, as it was to be our first season in the new clubhouse. After the previous season of being housed in shipping containers on the footpath – we looked forward to a life of comparative luxury! We had 11 patrol groups and the Patrol Captain’s deserve special mention for the efforts they put in ensuring we provided a professional service in accordance with our patrol agreement. The 2013/14 Patrol Captains were:

Thank you to all eleven of you, without whom, my job would be much more difficult! Again this season we had a dedicated ‘junior water cover’ patrol which, by season end, consisted of over 40 Bronze Medallion holders. Roy Menner, again, performed a sterling job of organising and running the junior water cover on our behalf this season. This season, in addition to the regular patrols, Henley provided water cover for:

Also, Henley members covered three SURFCOM radio room shifts. Thank you to all the members who got involved and flew the flag for Henley during these additional activities. Attendance at patrols this season was a mixed bag. The roster is promulgated early, you are only rostered for 4 or 5 patrols per season and a reminder SMS is sent 24 hours prior to your patrol – please try harder to meet your patrol commitments. Next season, please remember that by failing to meet your commitments you are not only letting your fellow patrol members down, but also your club and in the bigger picture, the community. We should all be immensely proud of volunteering to keep our beaches safe by wearing our red and yellow patrol uniform.


Please don’t turn up to patrol when it suits you and then stop patrolling once you have met your minimum hours to compete. Rather, please simply meet your rostered patrol hours. The number of SRC and Bronze holders increased during the 2013/14 season; however we are still short of the specialist qualifications on all 11 patrols. All‐Terrain Vehicle Driver Following some intense fundraising activities (see True Grit report), the club purchased a new patrol shade (pictured below). This style patrol shade is used extensively in NSW with great success. It is easier to erect, provides better visibility of the water and has an increased amount of shade than the previous model. If looked after, it will provide us with good shade from the sun and shelter from those trademark cold south‐westerly winds for years to come.

I urge you to care for all our expensive equipment. Thank you to our Club Captain, Tom Lanyon. Tom is mature beyond his tender years and again this season provided me with the guidance I needed to complete my job to the best of my ability. Beth to the Rescue Late in the season a new member, Beth Hooper, who has completed the training for her Bronze Medallion (but hasn’t had an opportunity to do her assessment) conducted a rescue at Henley. Beth is a very competent swimmer (apparently finishes neck and neck with Andrew Lanyon in the water) and she was entering the water just to the north of Henley Jetty when she noticed a man jump off the jetty and start struggling (he was out of his depth). Beth swam out to the man and performed a rescue, towing him safely back to shore. When she questioned her patient, he revealed that he couldn’t swim but thought he would be okay! If Beth wasn’t there, this story may have had a much different ending. Awesome effort Beth! The moral of the story here, is to be constantly alert and ready to respond – you never know what some people are going to do.

As forecasted, preceding the opening of our new clubrooms membership has sharply increased this season. The biggest highlight this season was watching the numbers increase in the cadet (13‐15 year olds) and Active (15‐18 year olds) age groups. Retaining members in this age group is very difficult but thanks to a handful of dedicated people maintaining and attracting new members has been successful. I don’t question our future chairperson is amongst this group. Membership has been made slightly easier by current members registering online again this season. The membership team on Saturday afternoons and during the week worked extremely hard to ensure all memberships were entered correctly on Surfguard. Suzi Aston (junior registrar) and Caryn Froud (senior registrar) worked tirelessly to get through the line ups at the membership tables especially in the first six weeks of the season. Committing to 10 hours of work each week unpaid while juggling full time paid jobs and being dedicated mothers at the same time makes our club the marvellous place it is. Both registrars stepped into their roles like they had been doing it for 10 seasons. Another highlight this season was selling club clothing on Saturdays before junior training. Watching 255 juniors walking down onto the beach in blue and white was humbling. Clothing 255 juniors this season was some feat with our new range of FINZ’s bathers and clothing to ensure they feel Henley proud. We introduced a new wave design on all bathers this season in conjunction with the opening of the new club rooms. Mid season we had a hiccup with a late shipment not arriving on time but our parents were very forgiving and eventually we had all our magnificent juniors in bathers, sun and competition hats plus rash tops. This season money was limited so this meant we brought no or smaller amounts of some styles of bathers and clothing. My motivating and generous right hand lady Louise Howard again was the best clothing coordinator a manager could wish for. Her patience, ideas and honesty was inspirational. Not many members would understand the commitment and patience it takes to clothe 722 body sizes with 722 different ideas on what cut, design and fabric the bathers should be. She is always very humble about the hard work that goes into this role. Our weekly


coffees after school drop off to nut out the latest drama surrounding clothing always kept this area moving smoothly. Many members helped us during the season so thank you for your time and support. Officials Coordinator The 2013/2014 surf season was an extremely busy season for our Officials. We managed to supply more than our minimum numbers at nearly every carnival. A big thank you goes to all our Henley Officials who spent many hours helping at the carnivals. This is often a thankless task and involves lots of patience and organisational skills. Without Officials, Henley would not have been permitted to compete. We had at least 20 Officials this season, which is a big improvement over previous years. I am looking forward to seeing you all out there next season.

IRB Area It was nice to have all the IRB’s and motors back in one place again. Storing all of the clubs equipment in one large space has not been without its challenges but I’m sure this will be sorted out with time. Only 5 club members gained their IRB crew award this season although quite a number of members inquired with me about IRB driver & crew courses. Any members interested in gaining their IRB driver or crew award should contact the clubs Chief Instructor. I believe courses will be running in June. All proficient IRB drivers & crew will recall receiving a number of text messages throughout the season requesting water cover for bronze training and other special events. The IRB’s were required for a number of open water swims, sometimes requiring all three ducks to be operational. The Masters Rowing Championships, a 5day event, also required a big effort by all IRB proficient members. I would like to remind all IRB drivers that the IRB Log needs to be filled out for ALL IRB operations not just patrols, also only proficient IRB drivers are to operate the IRB’s. A generous grant will hopefully see us start the 2014‐15 season with two new outboard motors. It will also be the start of the mandatory wearing of buoyancy vests by driver & crew at all times while operating an IRB. The Zodiac hull and two of the motors will need to be sold, so if anybody is interested, or knows anybody who is interested, please contact myself or the Club Captain.

Chief Instructor Each season the club grows and develops, and through this we produce the next generation of Surf lifesavers. For this to occur, the responsibility of our clubs trainers continually broadens and their valuable time, experience and skills become pivotal to the clubs future.

This season started with great optimism as we finally had an appropriate facility to deliver necessary training. With any new development there are always initial issues to overcome, however once identified, our club understood the importance and value to the community, and ensured training of members was a priority. Moving forward this can only be a benefit to all stake holders.

All groups have ongoing issues to resolve and having sufficient qualified trainers for all aspects of aquatic safety would be our primary concern. An enormous range of qualifications are required to train, update, facilitate and assess members at the club. We are constantly searching for more dedicated members interested in joining the training team to share the workload.

OFFICIALS: This season the responsibility of club officials was removed from the chief instructor and proved to be beneficial to everyone. I would like to thank Jen Frisby‐Smith for taking on that responsibility and congratulate her on a great job. TRAINING: The training of members (and the community) provides a large variety of issues. To ensure members receive suitable training in an appropriate time frame we deliver programs based on the following groups: Training new members Training/developing current members Maintaining members awards TRAINING NEW MEMBERS: Once again we had enormous interest by new members to become qualified Surf Lifesavers. The main difficulty with programming training is identifying suitable times for all to attend. Due to this not everyone who registered initial interest completed their training as quickly as desired.

DEVELOPING MEMBERS: Once members obtain base awards to patrol our beaches enhancing their skills and knowledge ensure the community is well catered for. Again having suitably qualified members to provide such training is an obstacle we will continue to address. We did however increase our members’ qualifications significantly again this season. MAINTAINING AWARDS: Each season all members’ awards need to be updated (proficiency). Currently with over 500 awards that require annual updates and only a handful of qualified trainers this is an ongoing challenge. Continually developing procedures, resources and methods of completing this will ensure all members continue to be highly skilled to perform our primary function.

Active After‐School Community Program This season Henley SLSC in conjunction with SLSSA and the Australian Government conducted an after school program. Henley Beach Primary School accepted the invitation. The program consisted of Seven 1 hour sessions (Monday 3.30pm‐4.30pm) in term 4 2013 and then again in term 1 2014. Each term 20 different students participated. The program had several outcomes and was aimed at students who are not currently involved with aquatic activities or sport. Outcomes included:

Have “non” active students participate in a program Attract new junior members to the club Introduce youth in the community to Surf Life Saving Educate youth in the community on beach safety/culture Provide a safe and healthy after school activity.

Participants coaches and coordinators of the program term 1 2014 Each week the participants were involved with a different aspect of Surf Life Saving and at the conclusion of the program had experienced most areas available to club members. Participants were offered “Come and Try” sessions (Saturday training) and if interested, initial membership would be partially subsidised by the Australian Government. Several participants took up this offer and hopefully will become important members in the future. Due to the term 1 2014 program being at the conclusion of the season these opportunities will be available for them next season. I would like to thank all the coaches, Ed Ashton and other members for providing water cover and also Steve Cornish (SLSSA), Alex Zivic (Australian Government) and Greg Lawless (Henley PS) for their assistance with the program. Wiltja Program The WILTJA Program has been running for approximately 27 years. It is a residential program that is designed to enable indigenous students to access a secondary education program. The students come from more than twenty remote communities across the Central and Western Desert regions of South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Henley SLSC has participated in the program for several seasons. The students are actively involved with most aspects of the club attending regularly on Sunday afternoons. Students who have been fortunate to attend regularly, have obtained the Surf Rescue Certificate and/or Bronze Medallion, Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue). Again this season the aims of the partnership were varied and diverse however we wanted to ensure outcomes included:

Providing further, and developing greater opportunities to students.

Enhance the students’ knowledge and education (skills and awards).

Introduce and further develop skills and involvement of new students.

Enhance knowledge of all members. Students who had previously obtained awards were invited to the annual HET camp. This gave them the opportunity to meet other members of similar age and for everyone to learn more about other club members. This group also joined club patrols. They were involved with the rostered patrol of the day and a welcome addition each time. Training these members for further awards will enhance their involvement and be beneficial to the members, the club and the community. With new students from many different parts of Australia and varying skills and experience with aquatic activities, training methods varied each session. Generally club trainers just coordinated the sessions with the qualified students taking on the responsibility of training others. This proved very beneficial and enhanced the skills and knowledge of all involved. This season 2 more students were successful in achieving their Bronze Medallion and Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Safety). Congratulations to Melissa Williams and Yindy Boon on this achievement. With many unforseen obstacles, their dedication, cooperation and willingness to adapt to range of trainers ensured they were able to complete the award before the end of the season. Junior Report This 2013/14 season will be remembered as the first season we were able to train from our new clubrooms. We are extremely fortunate at Henley in that our club has direct access to the beach without the need to cross roads, go down ramps or make long walks along paths to get to the beach.

All age groups assembled for the start to another Saturday of junior training.

As always, the Junior Committee has continued to work all year round and is currently in the middle of a review and planning process in preparation for future seasons. Under the guidance of Rachel Roe, our training coordinator, training will again continue through winter. The initial focus for training is the State Pool Titles. Following this, training will revert to the more traditional skills such as boards and beach events. Over summer we continued to provide training both on Saturdays for all children and mid‐week training for children competing at carnivals. Our Saturday numbers were at an all time high, which is great for the club, brought with it some ‘good’ problems. We experienced some issues with having large numbers of children in certain age groups. This is especially true for the youngest age groups of Under 6, 7 and 8. The Junior Committee is currently working through ways that will allow us to better cater for all of our larger age groups next season. As the junior numbers have grown, Saturday training has become a big event. There are many people that must be thanked, because without their support this weekly program simply would not run.


Firstly, the Age Group Leaders: Meredith Hemsley, Hannah Sitters, Chris Fuller, David McGranaghan, Mike Henry, Maddie Howard, Gary Ashton, Justin von Bertouch, Julie Maddigan, Matteo Simone, Maddie Cole, Jamie Butterfield, Rob Rea, Jonathon DeBeer, Rachel Roe, James Corbett, Tim Cavanagh, Rebecca Codd, Mitzi Date, Sandra Daly and Brett Roe. These people do not receive any payments, nor any reduction in their membership fees, but they do an amazing amount of work on Saturdays, during the week and at carnivals. We cannot thank these people enough.

Also helping is an army of members who provide water cover for children when they train on Saturdays, during the week and again at carnivals. They often spend hours in the water, again totally volunteering to ensure that all children are safe and confident while training. And finally, to the parents not only bringing the children to the club but also helping with the set up and pack up of the beach for training, helping the younger children in water activities, helping with Bazza’s BBQ, and towing the competition trailer to carnivals. It is support such as this, all done with a smile on their faces, that allows our club to be known as ‘The Friendly Club.’ Each year children from the Under 14 age group qualify for the Junior Lifer Saver of the Year Award, conducted by Surf Life Saving SA. This year’s winners were Cooper Forest and Siobhan Roe. Congratulations to both members.


State Junior Titles Our competition manager, Gary Ashton, has set Henley the goal of becoming a top 5 club at state titles. This year we finished 7th so we are on our way. This is a wonderful contribution to the club, both in the money that it raises, and in building a strong community both within our club and with members of the public. Each week there are various helpers from each of the age groups. Some regular helpers were Gary Tredrea, Irene Cole, Deb Tredrea, Cooper Forest, Edward Ashton, Maddie Cole Nenad and Tracey Tadic. Barry also had the BBQ running on Australia Day to support South Australia’s Masters’ Swimming Association’s annual Australia Day Swim. Helping that day were Oliver Miller, Phil and Trish Hogan, Beck Forest, Edward Gates‐Ashton, Steve Parker and Rae Lawson.

Henley Extreme Team (HET) Over the past twelve months the Youth members of the club, better known as the Henley Extreme Team (HET) has again been active both in competition and socially. One change which took effect during this time was the establishment of an informal “Youth Committee” for the first time. Traditionally over many seasons ‘HET’ has been coordinated by one person, a big task for anyone so to finally have additional support from other club members has been a positive move. Making up the “Youth Committee” was a mixture of club members holding various positions within the club but all who understand the importance of a strong Youth presence at Henley. I would like to thank Under 17 Age Group Leaders (AGL) Quentin Dorward and Oliver Miller, Under 15 AGL Phil Hogan, Competition Manager Sonja Smith, Junior Coordinator Roy Menner and Management Committee Youth advisor Nick Ruygrok for attending meetings and being involved in organisation of events. This time last year Bec Woods was our HET Coordinator however she was unable to continue in the role for 2013/14. Thank you Bec for your contribution to this role, undertaken on your own. Taking over from Bec in a dual capacity of HET Coordinators were Claire Harington and Tiarne Easley. To Claire and Tiarne thank you for your input and being the young voices and faces needed for the kids of ‘HET’ to relate to. All of those mentioned above contributed to a number of events which were held throughout the season. We had a dinner to commence the season in the new club A representative from the “Duke of Edinburgh” Award attended the club to talk about this program which can reward HET members with points towards SACE. The ‘HET’ camp at Chiton Rocks is always the highlight for HET members. Twenty two HET members attended this season which also included four Indigenous Bronze holders who came through the “On the Same Wave” (OTSW) program coordinated by Roy Menner. Including AGL’s and parental support twenty nine attended the camp, thank you to everyone who supported the kids. Roy has done a fantastic job coordinating the OTSW program which has resulted in youth from a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) background and those from indigenous communities being involved in Henley SLSC. OTSW also extends to providing programs to engage with people with a disability. Thank you also to Andrew Henry for attending the camp to conduct the Proficiency assessment for those on the camp. Surf Life Saving SA (SLSSA) held a beach cricket competition at Glenelg prior to Christmas. Many clubs didn’t participate but Henley were there thanks our HET members. One of the annual highlights for Youth members from all clubs is the Development camp held during the July school holidays each year. Last year Annina D’Amico and Jake Dorward were great Ambassadors for the club at this camp held at the Flinders Ranges. While not originally planned, it was fantastic to see members of ‘HET' helping the Henley and Grange RSL setting up for the Anzac Day Dawn Service at Henley. After being approached for support, it is a great sign of the character that our members were prepared to help the older members of the RSL on this most important day. Henley SLSC was also well represented at Anzac Dawn Services with brothers Josh and Ethan Miller carrying a banner for the RSL in the City march while Jade De Beer and Josh Smith were Flag Raisers during the Henley Service.


During the summer, HET is also active each Saturday, side by side with the Junior age groups, training on the beach and in the water. The Youth presence at these weekly trainings has been a direct result of AGL’s moving through with their groups from Juniors over recent seasons. In this regard thank you to Quentin Dorward and Oliver Miller who continued with the Under 17’s and with the Under 15’s Phil Hogan and Jim Plouffe. Their time and effort in being at the beach each week and at carnivals throughout the season provides all of the members of their groups the opportunity to train, compete and make club friendships. We also welcome in to the HET program our U14 juniors who were presented with their HET tops at the Junior Presentation day in March, looking forward to seeing them on the beach next season. Finally, it is apparent that the numbers of Juniors who will transition into ‘HET’ over the next few years will continue to make the Youth area of the club stronger. The Youth Committee has gone a long way towards supporting HET over the last twelve months. We look forward to AGL’s and parents from Junior ranks also moving through to the Youth ranks to ensure there are new faces taking on support roles in this part of the club. Competition Manager Report With the competition season coming to an end with the 2014 South Australian Pool Rescue State Championships being held in June our Henley members have once again shown their wonderful competitive spirit, determination and enjoyment at proudly being part of our Henley Team this season. The 2013/2014 season has seen an increase in competitive numbers across all disciplines in local, state, interstate and national competitions. This trend certainly does not seem to be slowing down, in fact just the opposite is occurring and I firmly believe that the professionalism, dedication and guidance of our Management Committee, Area Captains and Senior Age Group Leaders contributes to the continued growth throughout our club.

It has been a pleasure to support our Area Captains; Andrew Lanyon (Water), Andrew Henry (Beach), Scott Robinson (Ski), Steve Forest (Boards), Jamie Butterfield (Boats), Gary Ashton (Junior Representative), Jen Frisby‐Smith (Officials Co‐ordinator), Rachel Roe (Pool Rescue Coach) and our Club Captain Tom Lanyon. I would like to thank this group of dedicated members who have given their time to meet monthly to ensure all of our competitors have the best possible access to equipment, competitions and training. They have also been very proactive in offering training to our members within their areas. Our water captains together with our club captain, a junior committee member and U17 competitor also showed great team spirit as they joined forces to compete in the Open Mens Taplin event during the season. What an inspiration to our younger Seniors to ‘have a go’, race and put into the practice all of their training. There have been numerous meetings in the ‘equipment shed’ at our stunning new club where many discussions and negotiations have seen several configurations of the space tried and tested. We have attempted to find the ultimate way to not only best utilise the space but also to meet strict Work Health and Safety criteria. This continues even now in the off season and I would like to thank every Henley member for their patience during this time. We hope by the opening of the new season a more permanent working configuration will be implemented.


Recently we acknowledged the need to support new hopes and dreams from our competitors to improve further at State and National levels. To be competitive with the best in the industry there is an increased need to provide off‐season all year round structure training programs, with a Head Coach overseeing the performance of this team of athletes. Definitely a new and exciting venture that I’m sure will give all our Henley members more confidence going into next seasons State and National competitions. Thank to all of our members who have again embraced the entry processes. The stream lined approach certainly makes a difference in ensuring our competitors are well informed and I’m sure they feel secure in knowing their entries are received at SLSSA without any issues. One change for our 2014/2015 season will see SLSSA introduce seven separate entry fees for State Championships. The Henley Management support this change and have agreed to remove the competition levy from our membership fee in place of Henley members being respo nsible to pay their own entry fees. This season has seen a large number of Henley members compete at local, state, and national levels this season across all disciplines. We also had competitors travel interstate to compete at Victorian and NSW carnivals. Regardless of the ‘results’ our competitors have always conducted themselves with the Henley spirit and have shown that wearing our club colours means more than winning gold. Congratulations to you all. 2013 South Australian Pool Rescue Championships (20th ‐ 21st July) The Henley team came together in the middle of winter to once again show their strength in the State Pool Rescue Championships, finishing in 7th place overall with 150 points. With a small team of only 11 members but with enthusiastic and determined competitors from U12 ‐ Masters it was just fantastic to see a total of 20 medals awarded to our Henley team. This was an outstanding result and one the club as a whole should be extremely proud of. Thank you to our amazing team who showed wonderful skills, team spirit and perseverance during the weekend and to our volunteer officials, pool setters, time keepers, team manager and coach. 2014 Henley Club Championships (25th January) The annual event was held on a glorious summer’s day at Henley with an 11.30am start time for U15‐ Masters contesting the Senior Club Championships. There were an impressive 45 members competing in a range of events including the compulsory theory paper and swim followed by the 1 minute ergo rowing, single skis, flags, sprints and boards. The juniors competed in five events with total aggregated scores determining the winner in the male and female for each age group. The weather was perfect and competition fierce with a mixture of close results, ties and clear standouts. Well done to all competitors and it was great to see the Seniors and Juniors competing all on the same day.

Before the official presentations we were lucky enough to witness Greg Fletcher’s (a Henley ski paddler) wedding on the beach in front of our spectacular club. His stunning bride walked down the Henley Club aisle to lots of cheers and best wishes. Just after 7.00pm and after a great feed from the BBQ the official presentations began with a packed shed waiting excitedly to hear the day’s results. Our U9 ‐ U14 Club Champions received a $10 Henley Oceanview Kids Meal/Drink voucher and the U15, Open and Masters received a small trophy. One thing I certainly didn’t bank on


was for multiple ties!! The Juniors received their trophies at the End of Year Junior Presentation. The multiple winners receive their small trophy at the End of Year Event along with our Senior Perpetual Trophies.

Henley entered two teams this season into the State Titles. The Open 6 Person team included Dave Cassidy, Barrie Cole, Paul Martin, Roy Menner, Neal Paton and Patrick Stewart and the Open 5 Person R&R team included Dave Cassidy, Barrie Cole, Phil Hogan, Paul Martin and Roy Menner began training hard during the season for the competition which was held at Brighton Beach. Both teams were summing up their competition and the conditions early on and definitely had a tremendous level of confidence and team spirit. Both teams finished 5th and wore the Henley colours proudly on the beach. We look forward to next season seeing even more teams joining the RnR ranks. 2013 SOUTH AUSTRALIAN MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS (15TH AND 22ND ‐ 23RD FEBRUARY) Henley showed strength in numbers at Port Elliot and Aldinga Bay for these Championships with 54 competitors across all disciplines. It was great to see our Masters giving it their best with some excellent results, finishing 5th overall. An impressive and outstanding 58 medals were won by our Masters at the Championships and many 4th ‐ 6th positions were also achieved. What an exceptional effort by everyone, congratulations. Henley Masters Surf Boat crews at Aldinga Beach ‐ A special day of mateship on the beach! 2013 SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SENIOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS (2ND, 14TH, 15TH ‐ 16TH MARCH) With 105 senior members competing across various days and venues this year’s Senior State Championships saw Henley finish in 7th position overall. This was an excellent result and an improvement of three places from the previous season. With an increase in members competing at the Senior Carnivals we had 322 premiership points and were positioned in 5th place. It has been amazing to see the enthusiasm, team effort and efforts of all our competitors to finish in the top five before States. After the Senior States Days 1‐3 Henley had a total of 180 points and finished 8th. The new point score system then was used to calculate 25% of the total points accrued from the three carnivals to go towards the Senior State Championships, thus giving us an overall 7th position. Congratulations to all of our competitors across all disciplines; beach, swim, boards, ski, surf boats and march past team. We were well represented with 8 boat crews (40 competitors) and 65 competitors on the beach and in the water. This has been one of the biggest state title teams in the history of the surf club. We saw medals, many finalists and top ten finishes during the championships which at times were contested in very testing conditions and not without some controversy. There were many firsts achieved including the Open Mens boat crew taking out Gold, the first time in 32 years, the R&R teams scoring points for the first time in many years, the return of a competitive March Past team and two U17 teams competing in the Belt Race, which involves teams of five using the rescue reel.


We cannot forget the many parents and our members who give up their time to act as a team manager, officials, helpers and supporters for all of our athletes competing in some of the worst conditions seen this year for a carnival. Thank you to our incredibly resilient and proud Henley Team.

2014 AUSTRALIAN SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS (31ST MARCH ‐ 6TH APRIL) The years Australian Titles were held at Scarborough Beach in Western Australia. The Henley Surf Life Saving Club was extremely well represented with one of its largest touring teams on record with 33 competitors and 24 family and supporters. We finished with a total of 5 medals and many top 10 places in finals which is the best ever result at the Aussies for Henley. The Henley Masters team comprising of Andrew Lanyon, John Ellice‐Flint, Neville Fielder, Lindy Lewis, Gary Aston, Suzie Ashton, Greg Fletcher, Stephen Forest, Damien Grant, Scott Robinson, Brett Roe and Matt Simone finished in an impressive 28th place. This is extremely outstanding and an incredible improvement of 26 places. Congratulations to our Henley Masters. The Henley Opens team for U15 and up, were represented by Jake Butterfield, Lauren Daly, Jake Fitzgerald, Kevin Fitzgerald, Edward Gates‐Ashton, Cooper Forest, Colby Grace, Darren Hocking, Daniel Hogan, Tom Lanyon, Beth Mahoney, Sophie McEvoy, Jennifer Meister, Sarah Melios‐Traver, Daniel Murdock, Bianca Parker, Chloe Shatwell, Siobhan Roe, Courtney Smallacombe, Stefan Starkey and Isabelle Williams finished in 48th place. For many of these competitors this was their first time at Aussies and their first time standing on the start line of their heroes, such a very special moment.

There have been many stories and memories shared from Aussies but one that stands out is about persistence, never giving up and always being the best you can be. Congratulations to Neville Fielder our club President for bringing home his first Australian medal after 40 years of competing at Aussies. I’ve been told the emotion at the finish line was truly amazing.

The 2014 Henley Aussies Team respect from the other competitors was truly amazing. Travelling interstate for competition is an incredibly

exciting time but it can also demand a lot of organisation, time and effort in ensuring everything runs as smoothly as possible. Henley once again saw a group of amazing members take on roles such as the Team Manager, Officials, IRB drivers and crew and hands on support people. Thank you to Phil Hogan for taking on the massive task of Team Manager at these Championships, to Gary Ashton, Andrew Henry, Steve Forest, Brett and Rachel Roe and Kevin Fitzgerald for helping Phil in ensuring all competitors were registered and marshalled on time. A huge thank you to Trevor Mulvihill and Jim Doherty who officiated in the boat area, our IRB drivers and crew Tom Lanyon, Lindy Lewis, Greg Fletcher, Darren Hocking and Courtney Smallacombe because without your efforts our Henley team would not be able to compete. Finally, thank you to Trish Hogan who spent many hours organising accommodation and transport options for our team. I feel very proud and privileged to assist each and every one of our members, whether you are a junior, senior, official, volunteer, area captain, committee member or a parent cheering on your child, thank you. I know that you will continue to actively assist both competitive and non‐competitive members, and help out in any way you can. There is always plenty of opportunity for everyone to support the incredible Henley Surf Life Saving Club. Henley is an innovative club and one that other clubs are eager to learn from as we go from strength to strength in all disciplines of the sport. With an outstanding new club, new members continuing to join, new and updated equipment, enthusiastic coaches and area captains, structured training programs, a well maintained website, fast and effective communication via a variety of Facebook pages, Surfguard, emails and the Henley webpage we are destined for greater things to come. Thank you to Tim Cavanagh for his efficiency in ensuring updated competition information and results are placed on the Henley website for our members to access. I would like to thank the Management Committee as each person has given so much of their time to ensure the transition into our fantastic new club has been as smooth as possible for all of our members. It has been amazing to work with such a dedicated team of volunteers who continually show a genuine interest in Surf Life Saving, the Henley Surf Club and all of our members. Thank you also to David Cassidy, Quentin Dorward, Oliver Miller, Phil Hogan and Jim Plouffe for once again ensuring our HET team continues to develop and grow. They have been instrumental in providing the support and structure needed for the club’s youth to compete at the senior level. Finally, a personal thank you to Phil Hogan who willingly acted as the Henley Team Manager at the 2013 State Pool Rescue Championships, 2014 Senior State Championships, 2014 Australian Championships, all three 2014 senior carnivals and also at a range of interstate carnivals. Senior State Titles Report 2014 This year the Senior State titles were held over many days and at 5 venues and at the completion of the State Titles Carnival the Henley SLSC has finished in 8th position with 180 points. However this year State Centre has ruled that for the overall club Premiership points it also includes points gained at the 3 Senior carnivals held during the year and with this in mind the Henley SLSC has finished in 7th Position with 260 points and only 13 points behind 6th position. We were well represented with 8 boat crews (40 competitors) and 65 competitors on the beach and in the water, one of the biggest state title teams in the history of the surf club. The first day of competition was actually way back in early February with the Champion Patrol and Champion Life Saver on offer, our club Captain Tom Lanyon won the Bronze medal in the Open Champion Life Saver category and Cooper Forest a Bronze in the U14 category with Siobhan Roe in 7th. The second day of competition was on the 16th February at Brighton Beach where we saw the Henley R&R team competing in the 5 man with a 4th place and in the 6 man competition with a 5thplace. The third day of competition was on the 2nd March at Somerton Beach with heats and semi‐finals for the Flags, Iron man, Iron woman with our competitors racing down to the final 8 or 16. Henley was fortunate enough to have most of our competitors qualify for the finals. Aussie Titles Report 2014, Scarborough Beach WA This year the Australian Surf Life Saving Titles were held at Scarboro Beach WA between Monday 31st March and Sunday 6th April. The Henley SLSC was represented by one of its largest Touring Teams on record with 33 competitors and 24 family and supporters in attendance. In the Masters Competition we finished in 31st place out of 130 clubs with 42 points, a great effort from a team of 12 competitors and we didn’t have any boat crews competing, I’m sure if we did then our result would have been far better. A couple of stories to share. After 2 days of preparation in the WA surf our Board Captain Steve Forest on the first day of Masters competition while going for his warm up tore his calf muscle, resulted in the end of carnival for Steve, on Crutches and stuck in the tent, but he did win the award for the first person of the carnival to attend the First Aid tent. Lindy Lewis who won back to back medals in the Flags but if you could have seen her body language when she was squeezed out by 2 ladies from the same club for the Bronze medal, wow Im looking forward to her competing with them next year, if you can get there don’t miss that event. Our President Neville Fielder who has competed at the Aussies for 40 years and the medal he won in the men’s surf team with Andrew and John was his first ever at this competition, to see his emotion at the finish line was one to remember and the respect shown from all the other competitors and those watching on the beach was amazing, just shows we may all come from different clubs around Australia but with something like this everyone who knows Neville or who had competed with him over those years was lining up to congratulate him….. that is what Surf Life Saving is about. Later trying to get the 3 old men on the dais for a photo with their medals, well that’s another story for another day. Also don’t forget to ask our Ski Captain, Scott Robinson how to approach the turning buoys in a ski race, I’m sure he will give you some very valuable advice. The Open competition commenced on the Wednesday and is for competitors from U15 and up. It should be noted that for many of these competitors this was the first ever time at the Aussies and to be on the same beach and on the start line as many of their hero’s was a very special moment. Four of our competitors, Lauren Daly, Siobhan Roe, Cooper Forest and Ed Gates‐Ashton are also only U14 but as they have their SRC were able to compete in the U15’s and help make up teams and also demonstrate that they have a great future ahead, taking on the best in the country in the U15’s, we look forward to seeing them compete again next year. Many thanks to our Competition Manger, Sonja Smith who spent many hours processing the nominations and ensuring all our competitors were entered into the correct events on time, our officials, Trevor Mulvihill and Jim Doherty who officiated in the boat area, our IRB drivers and crew, Tom Lanyon, Lindy Lewis, Greg Fletcher, Darren Hocking and Courtney Smallacombe. It must be noted that without the extra efforts of the above helpers we would not be able to compete. Board Captain’s Report What a great year we have had in the Board area. We started early again with winter training which was well attended and certainly gave us a good base of fitness and technique for us to achieve the best results in years. The cold weather didn’t put many off but we all loved the day our wonderful club opened and we could have a warm shower after our sessions. With all the new paddlers coming through we knew we needed more boards so we organised a group buy for new boards. Ten boards were purchased and really helped with the demand on club craft. Training has had good numbers right through the year, but the warmer weather often left our board racks empty with so many turning up. Our top paddlers were pushing each other at every session. We even organised a training session with Clint Robinson for all the paddlers heading over to Aussies. The tips he shared with us were a great help and we hope to get him back next year for all of our board paddlers.

This commitment to training has given Henley its best results in years. We also had many competitors who were just outside the minor placing’s and it shows that we are moving higher up the ladder.

Although the U14’s are not yet seniors, they have trained with us all year and were crucial in making up numbers for the U15’s. Their training and commitment has not only seen them medal in junior competition but have also been up with the front runners in the U15’ This year also saw some long distance challenges. The Somerton Signature had three distances 500m, 9.5km and 16.5km. Tom Lanyon was the only entry in the 16.5km event and did very well. We had nine enter the 9.5km with Andrew Lanyon finishing the highest with an impressive 3RD outright and 1ST in his age group. Maeve Plouffe also achieved 3RD in her age group. We also had success in the 500m dash for the juniors. The Mid Coast Challenge was a 4.1km iron person challenge where Daniel Hogan and Jake Butterfield did very well. We had the largest group of competitors in years all head over to Scarborough WA for Aussies. Although most of us didn’t finish as high as we would have liked, we certainly learnt a lot and had a great time. Andrew Lanyon showed us all again that dedication to training does pay off by achieving Gold in the Ironman and 4th in Individual boards. He then combined his board skills with Neville Fielder to achieve 5th in the final of board rescue.

I am looking forward to seeing our numbers grow again next season with all the new U14’s coming up. We will also be implementing some of the training plans we have been working on. Hopefully this will see more people on boards and also improvements on last year’s results.

We even made it into the Aussies newspaper with Edward Ashton Gates catching a ripper wave.

I have to say thank you to all the coaches, competitors and families for their commitment and help over the year. I would also like to make special mention of Club Management, who have shown great support for the ideas and visions put forward for the future of the Board Area.

Beach Area

Having improved over the past few seasons the goal of the Beach team this season was to send a team to the Australian titles and make a final (open event). To do this however dedication and commitment from a group of athletes was pivotal. Again after a slow start to training a group of U15 girls (Chloe Shatwell, Isabelle Williams, Bethany Mahoney, Sophie McEvoy and Lauren Daly) accepted the challenge and set the foundation for a successful season. Some members joined training occasionally however the core group continued with the program and eventually more members joined the group that will hopefully progress and develop in the future. The competitive season is generally divided into 4 stages ‐ Preseason, Competition , State titles, Australian titles, Preseason: Attendance of members was irregular however a few members were achieving preseason requirements through other sport commitments. Further development of cross training will be delivered in the future to enhance members core strength. Competition: Primarily our involvement was with the U15 group, however a few members from other age groups competed without regular involvement. Unfortunately scheduled SLSSA carnivals are insufficient preparation for serious beach athletes, and alternative arrangements will be considered to provide our club members every opportunity for success. Results however improved over the season giving athlete’s confidence they were on the right path. State Titles: Masters: Once again several excellent results were achieved. We still have the opportunity to greatly improve, however for this to occur specific planning and training in both individual and team events is a priority. Members achieved 12 individual medals (including 6 gold), 2 relay medals and many more top six results. I congratulate all competitors with special mentions to Andrea Turner and Lyndall Sharp who both won multiple medals in the beach area, at their first State titles representing our club. Open: Planning for the state titles proved difficult with details of days/times/venues this year not finalised until one week before the event. We did however send our strongest team for several seasons and gained medals in all events and every age group except open. With suitable commitment strong results and medals in the open area will be rectified in the immediate future. Support and guidance of the U15, U17 and U19 age groups is one of the reasons we continue to improve. To Olly Miller, Quentin Dorward, Dave Cassidy and Phil Hogan, I thank you for your support in rallying your age groups and continued encouragement. Several of our athletes made finals with some outstanding individual and team performances. Generally the strength of a club is determined by their team results. We had several members attend the carnival specifically to ensure we had teams in every age group and your commitment is to be commended. Overall the team achieved 7 medals including 1 gold ‐ Isabella Hood, and many more top six results, gaining important points for the club. The under 17 men’s relay team won bronze and then backed up with a second bronze in the U19 age group.


Australian Titles: Again several masters’ competitors attended and achieved good results, however for the first time in many seasons we have members entered in the open championships. Masters: Lindy Lewis again led the way with a Bronze in the Flags with Gary Ashton gaining 4th in the sprint and 5th in the 2km run. Suzie Ashton 7th and Brett Roe 7th also competed strongly in their 2km run. I have no doubt with further development in the Masters area as a whole these results will further improve in the future. Open: Most of our athletes competed in the U15 age group however Tom Lanyon competed in the Open flags, and with a little more luck (1 more flag) would have made it through to the quarter finals. All our athletes competed strongly at their first Australian titles, with the relay teams providing the best results. The U15 Mens Beach Relay finished 7th in the final (Cooper Forest, Ed Ashton, Daniel Hogan, Jake Butterfield) while the U15 Womens Beach Relay finished 7th in their semi‐final, (Bethany Mahoney, Chloe Shatwell, Isabelle Williams, Sophie McEvoy, Lauren Daly (reserve)). Support from athletes family’s was outstanding and should this group of members continue their commitment far greater results are inevitable.Thank you: Many people provided assistance and support over the season and I thank you all very much. Specifically I would like to thank Nikki von Bertouch and Lindy Lewis for their continued support with training (again) this season and also to the athletes who participated over the season. Also thanks to Sonja Smith for assisting myself and all area captains with the onerous behind the scenes tasks. With the club continually growing, supporting our next generation of athletes is imperative. Ultimate success is not that far away however for this to occur it takes more than just athletes and a training program. Generally the larger the support network, the better the results. Lets’ give our young members every opportunity to succeed. Surfboats Area

The surf boat area has again had an outstanding season in competition. The club won the Australian Surf Boat Rowers League of S.A (ASRLSA) Premiership Shield in 2012‐13 and will be rewarded again for this season’s performances. The 2013‐14 Premiership Shield will be presented at the ASRLSA Annual Awards Dinner to be held at the HSLSC on 21st June 2014. The HSLSC’s strategic plan for the surf boat area continues to positively challenge the surf boat area each season. Our plan is a five page document developed by internal members that is revisited by the leadership committee each year to keep our goals on track. Below are some of the achievements from our strategic plan over the last four years, made possible by a collective effort from all members in the surf boat area and will be continued with each season:

Professional training programs on strength, fitness & technique.

Development of trainee sweeps.

Planning for the future through HET Junior transition squads.

Develop alliances with other surf clubs.

Sponsorship opportunities

Purchase a quality second hand racing boat.

Acquire a double surf boat trailer.

Recruit a “naming rights” boat sponsor, patron to purchase a new surf boat.

Send at least four State crews to represent S.A at Nationals and we achieved this by sending three (50% of

the SA State team).

Win the S.A Boat Premiership Shield (we’ve achieved four shields in succession)

Have a competitive open men and women crews – in 2013‐14 our Men’s crew won Gold and our Women

were Silver medallists.

Conduct regular come & try events to encourage new rowers.

Increase IRB drivers & crew certifications of surf boat crew members.

Access to specialised coaching resources within the club.

Knowledge of and subsequent utilisation of existing member’s skills.

Increasing the number of supporters to assist with ancillary tasks.

Develop a sense of commitment to your crew, the club and surf boat rowing.

It is an important function to coach and mentor the junior members through these key goals and help them understand the importance of seeing things through. This means that coaching /mentoring extends beyond the surf boat area and into the area of talent identification, club spirit and pitching in to help in all facets of the club. The 2013‐14 surf boat competitive season began with State Time Trials to qualify for the National Triple Crown events. The Henley U23 Women’s crew – The Pirates won entry into the Triple Crown event in Surfers Paradise in November 2013, Anglesea in Victoria in December and then into one of the biggest carnivals hosted in Australia at the Manly and Freshwater carnivals on the Australia day weekend 2014. The Pirates finished in the finals of the U23 Women’s competition at all carnivals whilst also rowing in the Open Women’s divisions. What a wonderful achievement by these dedicated young women! The ASRL Young Guns event was also held at Robe S.A on November 30th. Crews travelled to Robe from all around Australia to compete in this event and Henley had U23 women and senior men crews’ competing. The HSLSC also announced the donation of our retired “Happy Hemsley” surf boat and trailer to the newly formed Robe SLSC and we look forward to seeing this new club at future surf boat events.


The Henley Pirates U23 Women, Royals U19 Men and Dirty Birds U23 Men all represented S.A at the ASRL Opens event in Stockton NSW in February 2014. S.A came fourth in the interstate relay. The Masters State Titles were held at Aldinga on February 15th and congratulations to all our medal winning crews. Our Masters Women – The Sirens and the Hurricanes continue to do very well every season, winning Gold and Silver this year and we expect our Henley Masters Women will be in very high contention to win the ASRLSA Masters Cup this year. The Senior State Titles were held at Moana Beach on March 16th. The seas were very stormy early in the day with high winds making it a very challenging day for all competitors, but it really put some excitement into the event. Congratulations to all medal winners, special mention to the U23 Women – The Pirates who took out the Silver medal in the Open Women and Gold in the U23s, and our Dirty Birds who took the Bronze in the Open Men, and Gold in the U23s. Hocko’s crew ‐ The Mackdogs won the Open Men’s State Title, a fantastic result for the club, the crew and Hocko. The Pirates U23 Women and Dirty Birds U23 Men then went on to compete at the Australian Titles at Scarborough WA; the Pirates made it all the way through to the last day of finals. The HSLSC thanks the support of ICON, the sponsor of our new ‘Perry’ Surf Boat, used throughout the season and gave us a great advantage in competition. Thank you to all the dedicated sweeps that have committed their personal time throughout the season as well as helping with the towing of the boats, with a special thanks to Kevin Fitzgerald & Darren Hocking for towing our boats to the interstate competitions. We wouldn’t be the successful surf boat club we are without the dedication from our strength and fitness coaches ‐ Gary Tredrea & Gary Fazzalari who have again created enthusiasm in the gym with their regular circuit, boxing and gym programs. Thanks to Rae Lawson for assisting me as surfboat coordinator, keeping all the carnival entries in order in addition to her role as Secretary for the ASRLSA. Ski Area This season was a step forward from the last couple of years. The core group of master’s paddlers has continued to train regularly and there has been strong interest from the u17 and 19 members at the club with regular Saturday afternoon training. Henley once again dominated in the ski area at Masters State titles winning a total of 13 medals including 7 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze. While it was the usual suspects who continued to perform well it was good to see returning members Kate Fielder and Karen Hansen on the podium and also new member Peter Stubbs who joined the club from Maroochydore this year. While we only had a few members competing on Skis at Open State Titles it should be recognised that for the first time in a number of years Henley had a paddler in the finals of the U17 Male Ski – Ryan Froud, U19 Male Ski – Sean Dedai and Open Male Ski – Scott Robinson. This is a big step forward and hopefully something we can build on for next year with representation in Female events as well.

This year at Aussies in Scarbourgh we had a small committed team with one open and four masters paddlers competing. We were able to demonstrate Henley is competitive on the national stage with paddlers in a number of finals and Damian Grant and Matteo Simone finishing fourth in the 35‐39 Mens Double Ski. A big thank you must go out to Quentin Dorward, Oliver Miller and Phil Hogan who manage the U15, 17 and 19’s at the club and

have provided them with a path to transition from nippers to senior

competition. I believe their input will ensure Henley be successful not only in the ski area but across all areas of competition in years to come. Scott Robinson

WATER COMPETITION AREA Weekly Surf Races The weekly Saturday swims continued to be very well supported this season. We had an average of 40 swimmers each week over the 12 swims and an excellent maximum of 62 on November 2nd. A total of 114 members did at least one swim. Points were awarded each week for participation (2 points) with bonus points for the first 6 places on handicap ( 6 down to 1). The top 10 are in the table below.

Swimming Training Our swim training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Immanuel College pool are continuing to be well supported with an average of about 30 members attending each night during the summer months and it has been great to see good numbers continuing into the winter months this year. Competitions Water area competition includes the swimming events of surf swim race, rescue tube races, belt race and surf swim teams plus the multidiscipline events of board rescue, ironman, Taplin relay and Cameron relay and the pool rescue events. Pool Rescue Events The Pool Rescue State Championships were held at the State Aquatic Centre in July 2013. Henley had a team comprising U13, U14, U15, U17 and masters members who worked hard prior to the events to learn these new events and improve their skills to a competitive level. Thank you to Rachel Roe for coaching the pool rescue team. Our team performed very well winning several medals and achieving many high placings. One of the highlights of the carnival was Josh Smith’s win in the 50m with fins, swimming the full 50m underwater in 18 seconds. Senior Carnivals and Senior State Championships A large team comprising mainly under‐15s and under‐17s represented Henley in the water events at carnivals and State Championships. This saw us field competitors in nearly all U15 and U17 water event at States, which included surf swim, board rescue, Cameron relay, ironman/women and surf teams. We were also represented in the Lifesaver Relay and Open Taplin Relay which was great to see and a sign of our club’s growing number, quality and maturity of competitors. I extend a big thank you to the age group leaders and parents for their encouragement and support for all of our competitors. Masters State Championships


It was great to see a further increase in our number of masters competitors in both male and female contingents and in general it is nice to have a growing culture within our over 30 members of keeping fit, getting involved and having a go at the masters’ competitions. Many members won medals in the swim and water area events and all who finished in 1st to 6th places scored points towards our overall club score which finished at a 10% improvement of last year and easily our best ever. Thank you to all who represented Henley, congratulations to all of our medallists and point scorers and above all, well done to all those who are newcomers to lifesaving competition and have had to work hard to develop their skill and fitness levels in order to take part. Australian Championships It was wonderful to be part of such a large and enthusiastic team at Aussies this year and the strong team spirit ensured that our team had an enjoyable time and successful results. In the Masters competition we had some great success in the water area, winning medals in four events. For me the highlight came on day‐2 with the Henley team winning the silver medal in the 170+ surf (swim) teams which I believe is Henley’s first team medal in masters’ competition at Aussies. Our team comprised Neville Fielder, John Ellice‐Flint and Andrew Lanyon. In the individual surf races on day‐1 a great swim from John Ellice‐Flint claimed the silver medal in the 60‐64 race. Neville, John and Andrew all swam well to make the finals of their rescue tube races. In the finals Andrew won the 55‐59 final with Neville in 7th place and John finished in 5th place in the 60‐64 final. In the 45‐49 age group Steve Forest and Brett Roe swam in the surf race and rescue tube race and along with Gary Ashton in the 130years surf teams. Six competitors represented Henley in the Under15 water events, with Siobhan Roe and Lauren Daly in the female events and Jake Butterfield, Cooper Forest, Edward Gates and Daniel Hogan in the Men’s. All of these members were at their first Aussies and all gained valuable experience of competing at the top level of their sport. We were represented in tube race, surf swim, board rescue, surf team, ironman and Cameron relay.

R & R and March Past It was great to see the club have both an R & R and a March Past team competing on the beach for the first time in almost 40 years. During the season, competition for both of these events was very limited, and this prevented members from gaining the necessary experiences. While the R & R team had been formed during the previous year, it was disqualified at the 2013 state titles due to an equipment malfunction. This caused the team members to feel that there was some “unfinished business” to attend to, and were keen to participate again this season. Rescue and Resuscitation (R & R) is an event that takes years to perfect, and our team spent many hours on the beach drilling. Team members were, Phil Hogan, Neal Paton, Barrie Cole, Rick Daley, Paul Martin, Roy Menner and Patrick Stewart. We competed in both the five and the six person events at the State Titles and even though we were unplaced, the team performed well and represented our club proudly. Our March Past team was formed during the season, but finding 12 members that were able to practice together at the same time was quite difficult. While there were eventually 13 team members to choose from, holidays, family, and work commitments made it difficult for all them to be available to train regularly as a full team. Like the R & R there were very few Mast Past competitions during the season and while medals were not obtained, it was pleasing to see our score improving each time during the season. March Past was the 1st event at the carnivals which meant the team was required to be on the beach ready by 7.00 am. The following members made up the team Barrie Cole, Madeline Cole, Rick Daley, John Foody, Beck Forest, Phil Hogan, Rae Lawson, Roy Menner, Paul Martin, Neal Paton, Patrick Stewart, Gary Treadrea and Lyn Woods Both the R & R and March Past team members competed with the main objective to show Henley SLSC on the beach in these two iconic events, and they must be congratulated and thanked for their attitude in this regard. We now look forward to improving next season and in this regard I invite anyone with the slightest interest, to put their hand up to do March Past and / or R & R. There is very little experience needed as that can be taught. What is required is a commitment to training which makes it an ideal event for the parents of our juniors, or members who are still looking for a competition interest to pursue. TRUE GRIT Whilst sitting under the patrol tent with Finance Manager, Mark Travers, during the patrol season, I asked him if the revenue from the bar would raise sufficient funds for us to no longer need to seek funds from other ‘lifesaving‐related’ activities. Mark replied with a sigh and assured me that any ‘extra’ donations or fundraising activities were always welcome in servicing our considerable building debt. It was with this motivation in mind, that Henley SLSC more than tripled the 2012/13 season involvement with True Grit Pty Ltd. In the week preceding the official club opening, True Grit held ‘Night Attack’ at the Adelaide Showgrounds on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of October 2013. On all three nights Henley SLSC members provided 24 safety and obstacle marshals on the course, which consisted of a 5km cross‐country run combined with 17 challenging military‐style obstacles. Overall, 39 different Henley SLSC members were involved over the three nights, which was a fantastic effort given that the patrol season hadn’t even started. Thank you to all involved, especially those who turned up on all three nights. We raised $4015, which was an awesome effort. The second True Grit event for the 2013/14 season was on the ANZAC Day long weekend (26th and 27th April 2014), held at the picturesque Caudo Vineyard, just outside Waikerie, on the Murray River in the Riverland. This event involved a 12km all‐terrain run combined with 40 military‐style obstacles. Our role was to provide safety and marshalling duties at a variety of obstacles. Informally, we also offered encouragement and coaching to participants. The ‘touring’ team consisted of:

It was a considerable commitment to ask of our members, given that the event was being held on a long weekend at the culmination of a very busy season of patrolling and competing for many members. Once again, Henley (and our two very capable Glenelg SLSC ring‐ins) stepped up to the plate and provided a very professional service. All involved were a credit to Henley and surf lifesaving. The West Beach Community Bank Big Row 2014 Henley SLSC’s major annual fundraiser, the ‘Big Row’ was held on the 31st January and 1st February 2014. This was the eighth time the 68km crossing from Stansbury on the Yorke Peninsula to Henley Beach has been held, and this year raised $61,492 in cash donations. Including ‘in kind’ and goods donations, the total amount raised was over $78,000. Once again the weather threw up some challenges, with temperatures reaching the low 40’s during the week and continuing on into the weekend. This was a complete back flip on the conditions from last year and once again proves the resilience of our club and participants to overcome all obstacles to successfully complete the crossing. With the 42 degree heat to contend with, crews were rotated in shorter timeframes and additional personnel on the crossing were ‘subbed in’ to give rowers adequate breaks. First Aid Officer, Rasma Andrejewski reported that no major injuries occurred and each rower underwent a physical check after each row to ensure they were coping with the hot weather. Back at Henley, the committee was busy getting the club and beach ready for the arrival. With the junior session being cancelled due to the heat rule, it was feared that that the weather would keep people away from the beach and impact on the spectacle, but as the surf boat drew near, plenty of club members and general public made their way to the beach to observe the arrival. Lisa Will and Jamie Butterfield also managed to organise three additional crews to row out and welcome in the finishing crew of Joseph Fazzalari (youngest member), Gary Tredrea, Katie Cavanagh, Stefan Starkey and Gary Fazzalari (sweep). The SAMFS fire boat, the Gallantry also made a last minute entrance to provide the waiting crowd on the beach with an amazing display. Once again our sponsor, ‘Crust’ provided the crews with hot fresh pizza at the finish line which was greatly appreciated by the participants. Our junior lifesaving school program continued on its positive pathway this year, under the direction of Barrie Cole. This year the surf education program had 55 children participating from Stansbury, Edithburgh and Port Vincent Primary Schools. Barrie, along with Chief Instructor Andrew Henry, coordinated a contingent of rowers, junior helpers and club members to deliver the session which provided surf safety to all students and provided the year 6 and 7 students with their Resuscitation Certificates. This year’s after‐row Sponsor function was a special event as it was the first to be held in our new building. The Welcome committee did a great job of decorating the top room and welcoming all of our sponsors and club members who took part in celebrating the crossing. I would like to thank the Big Row Committee for once again donating their time and experience to the planning and implementation of the event. A special mention also goes to Robin Hammond who took on the role of Sponsorship Coordinator this year, after being handed the reins by Jane Dewar. With me being only in my second year of coordinating the Big Row, it was quite a ‘baptism of fire’ for both Rob and myself, with the blind leading the blind at times! However, we managed to pull through in the end and I would like to thank Rob for the time and effort he put in to maintain and secure sponsorship for the 2014 event. Finance Report The overall strong financial position of the club has continued to be maintained in the 2013‐14 operating year, despite a year of significant change. The closing cash position for the Club as at 30 April 2014 was $99,851 which included a balance in the building account of $68,166 and working capital balances in the club operating and trading accounts of $31,608. The total figure recorded as at 30 April was below the opening balance of $838,697. This decrease in the cash position is explained by the following main reasons:

Expenditure on the club building project,

Expenditure on building “fit out” items and general capital expenditure, offset by:

increased membership income,

the impact of the Big Row and other fundraising event, and

improved trading income. Capital Expenditure: During the year the Club incurred expenditure on capital items (assets) totaling $1,413,693 ($1,056,793 in 2012/13). The items purchased included: Capital costs associated with the new Building $1,226,681 New Equipment: Plant and Equipment (including Building “fit out” items) $150,379 Competition/Lifesaving Equipment (Boards, skis,AWD, etc.,) $28,267 Surf Boat Equipment $ 8,366 These purchases have to some extent been directly offset by various grants and sponsorships received during the year in addition to the application of the equipment funding levy, which raised $14,480 in 2013‐14). Seeking specific direct sponsorship for equipment continues to be actively pursued to ensure that the Club can continue to support equipment requirements into the future. As at 30 April 2014 the total book value of assets reported was $2,990,332 ($1,610,748 in 2013) consisting of the Building totally $2,651,107 ($1,424,429) and Plant & Equipment $339,225 ($186,319). Operating income for the year was $701,730 which was above that figure of $237,699 received in 2012‐13. The result is largely explained by:

Increased trading outcome due to club opening ($490,133 up from $25,090)

Grants, Sponsors and Fundraising ($112,420 down from $135,533)

Membership / Levy contribution ($87,526 up from $57,736) It is noted that the membership figure includes the Building Fund Levy which amounted to a figure of $15,300 in 2013‐14 (total collected equates to $65,370) and the Equipment Levy which equated to a figure of $14,480 in 2013‐14. These funds were used in a variety of outcomes including:

Lifesavings – administration, training, competition and operations ($48,417)

General Operation ($36,120)

Building maintenance and operations ($65,613) The net operating result of the Club for 2013‐14 was $756,516. This result is reduced after taking in account the building funding specifically received to fund the development of the new building of $680,471 to an operating profit result of $76,045 ($120,437 in 2012‐13). This result reflects the higher costs incurred during 2013‐14


associated with the new building (increased utility charges, higher insurance costs, higher cleaning costs, interest charges, etc.) and to some degree the lower level of grants and trust disbursements received. Included within this result was the trading account result of a Gross Profit of $79,663 ($4,736 (clothing only) in 2012‐13). The trading outcome for the bar/restaurant area equated to a 16.5% margin over total income and it is anticipated that this margin will improve in 2014‐15 with the benefit of the experience gained over the past 6 months trading. The retention of a strong cash position has been a focus for the Committee given the need to retain funds to ensure that the long term financial position of the Club is strong and the committee has worked diligently towards this objective. The Committee continues to review capital expenditure in line with the endorsed 5 year capital plan to ensure that the Club’s equipment is maintained at an appropriate level and to also keep up with the demand given the increasingly strong membership base. The building project added increased financial pressure in relation to the loan required to assist with the funding of the building. The original balance of $400,000 has been reduced to a balance of $300,000 as at 30 April 2014. This reduction is in line with the requirement to repay the $200,000 five year loan facility over this period. Income from club activities to support the funding requirements of the Club is derived from 4 key areas: Membership – 12% (24% in 2012‐13) Trading Activities – 69% (10% in 2012‐13) Grants and Fundraising – 16% (58% in 2012‐13) Other – 2% (6% in 2012‐13) As indicated above the strong membership base of the Club continues to provide a strong financial base to support the ongoing operations of the club. The Big Row continues to be the key fundraising initiative for the Club. Sponsorships are also an important fundraising component and all sponsors should be congratulated for their invaluable and generous support of the Club. Grants made available by the Local Council, State Government and Federal Government are also critical. The club (and its finances) has again been well served over the past year by those members who put in an enormous amount of time on Grant applications, organizing the Big Row and raising funds through the BBQ on Saturdays, Bunning BBQ and other. Without your time, effort and in some cases contacts, the Clubs’ financial position would not be as strong as it is. Well done! All these areas need to remain a strong focus for the Committee in coming years and that continued support from members will be required. The Club has over the past several years has maintained a strong commitment to maintain a solid financial base to enable it to move forward with the building project and protect its financial position post construction. Now with that project has been completed the task remains one of reducing the financial commitment that has been made by the club through the repayment of the borrowing. This financial commitment is significant and the on‐going support of all Members will be essential in maintaining our strong financial position moving forward. Note 1 Statement of Significant Accounting Policies The Financial Report is a general purpose financial report that has been prepared in accordance with Australian Accounting Standard, other mandatory professional requirements and the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act (South Australia). The Financial Report covers Henley SLSC as an individual entity. Henley SLSC is an association incorporated in South Australia under the Associations Incorporations Act. The accounts have been prepared on the basis of historical costs and do not take into account the changing values or, except where stated, current valuations of non‐current assets. Cost is based on the fair values of the consideration given in exchange for assets.


The following is a summary of the significant accounting policies adopted by the Club in the preparation of the financial report. The accounting policies have been consistently applied, unless other wise stated. (A) INCOME TAX

The Association is exempt from income tax under the provisions of Division 50 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997

(B) INVENTORIES Inventories are valued at the lower of cost and net realizable value.

(C) PROPERTY, PLANT AND EQUIPMENT The value of the Club’s Non‐Current Assets is reviewed annually by the Management Committee and they are of the opinion that the book value, after allowance for the current year’s depreciation charge, represents fairly their carrying values.

(D) CASH For the purposes of the Statement of Cash Flows, cash includes cash on hand and at bank.

(E) REVENUE Revenue from the sale of goods is recognized upon delivery of goods to customers. Interest Revenue is recognized on the basis of the interest rate applicable to the financial assets. Revenue from rendering of a service is recognized upon the delivery of a service to customers. All revenue is net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST).

(F) GOODS AND SERVICES TAX Revenues, expenses and assets are recognized net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Tax Office. In these circumstances the GST is recognized as part of the cost of acquisition of the asset or as part of an item of the expense. Receivables and payables in the Statement of Financial Position are shown inclusive of GST.

Auditor’s Report To the Members of Henley Surf Life Saving Club Inc. SCOPE I have audited the financial report being the Statement of Financial Performance, Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Cash Flows, Notes to the Financial Statements and the Statement by members of the Committee of Henley Surf Life Saving Club Inc. set out on pages 75 to 79 for the year ended 30 April 2014. The Committee is responsible for the financial report. I have conducted an independent audit of the financial report in order to express an opinion on it to the members of the Club. My audit has been conducted in accordance with the Australian Auditing Standards to provide reasonable assurance as to whether the financial report is free of material misstatement. My procedures included examination, on a test basis, of evidence supporting the amounts and other disclosures in the financial report and the evaluation of accounting policies and significant accounting estimates. These procedures have been undertaken to form an opinion as to whether, in all material respects, the financial report is presented fairly in accordance with applicable Australian Accounting Standards and other mandatory professional reporting requirements so as to present a view which is consistent with our understanding of the Club’s financial position, the results of its operations and cash flows. The audit opinion expressed has been formed on the above basis. QUALIFICATION Given the nature of the operations of the Henley Surf Life Saving Club inc. it is not practicable to establish accounting controls over all amounts receivable prior to the issue of a cash receipt and therefore it is not possible to know whether all income due to the Club has been received by the Club and recorded in the books of account. Accordingly, my audit has been limited to the amounts of cash receipts recorded in the books of account of the Club. AUDIT OPINION In my opinion, subject to the above qualification, the financial report presents fairly in accordance with the applicable Australian Accounting Standards and other mandatory professional reporting requirements the financial position of Henley Surf Life Saving Cub Inc., as at 30 April 2014, and the results of its operations and cash flows for the year then ended.

Births, Marriages and Deaths Leah Panakera‐Thorpe and Ben Lewis welcome Duke into their family. Marriages Tara McElhinney and Matt Clarke wed in January 2014 Greg Fletcher and Leah Torzyn wed in January 2014 Deaths Vale Sue Lindford nee Williams past member sadly passed away due to a long illness Vale Wally Fletcher, past member one time State Long Board Champion and member of champion R&R teams Vale Gerry Watson, past member, regular R&R and March Past team member, represented the Club interstate on

several occasions.

The Naming of the New Surf Boat “Barry Duhne” The club purchased a new ‘Perry’ boat with the help of an insurance claim from the TJ having a malfunction with a trailer on the open road and named it the “Barry Duhne” Barry joined the club in 1962 and was a swimming champion and a R&R competitor. With lots of success. He represented the State many times and was a member of the Australian team who travelled to New Zealand in 1966. He was a member of the management committee for 28 years taking on roles of President, Secretary, Treasure, Captain, and Chief Instructor. In 1983 he received a Citation of Merit from World Life Saving and was granted Life Member of Surf Life Saving South Australia . He also was Bar Manager for many years and had great input into the clubs strong financial position. Barry was granted Life Membership of Henley SLSC in 1971. This boat had instant success winning Gold in the Open, u23 men and u23 women, and Silver in the Open Female at the State Titles this season. Icon, BJ Ball has taking the opportunity to be the sponsor of the Barry Duhne for the next 5 years, which the club welcomes aboard, Kerry Saul the owner and manager to the club.

Life Membership

Jane Dewar Jane Dewar joined Henley SLSC during the 1993/94 season gaining her Bronze Medallion, and has remained an active member since that time. She grew a love for surfboats when she was introduced to rowing in the 1996/97 season and won the Jim Doherty Trophy for most enthusiastic rower. Jane was in the first ever Henley SLSC female boat crew to win a medal at state titles in 1997. She represented South Australia in the Kelloggs Series at Ocean Grove and Lorne in Victoria, and the Sizzler Competition in Currumbin Queensland. Her crew won a silver medal at the World Titles at Christies Beach in the 140 division in 2012. Jane’s enthusiasm and love for the club grew to the stage where she wanted to be part of the club’s future and its plans. Over the years she has been Boat Captain, Club Secretary, Fund Raising Coordinator, Grants Officer, Membership Manager, Registrar and Sponsorship Manager. The Big Row (the clubs major fundraiser) would not be what it is today without the hard work, passion and dedication she has put in. The club is indebt to Jane for the thousands of dollars the Big Row has raised. Jane motivated members, chased and chased sponsors and organised the “Henley Challenge” which was also a very successful fundraiser. Jane is the only Henley SLSC member who has won the Presidents Trophy 3 times, an award which is not given lightly. This was thoroughly deserved for the professionalism, dedication and results achieved. This was not only for her involvement in the rowing fraternity, but for her contribution to the management of the club and the effort to ensure Henley would reap financial rewards through fundraising and grant writing. Shelly Nelson Shelly started in the juniors as an U8 in 1981 where she was awarded the U8’s Club Champion award for that season. She loved training and competed in carnivals for three year until her family was transferred to Alice Springs. While in Alice Springs her family kept up their swimming training and connections to the club. Shelly returned in 1986 and quickly got involved again obtaining her SRC Certificate and started patrols. When she was 13 years old she was the only nipper competing for Henley at this time. She competed in the beach events in the seniors until she was 19 years old. She was awarded her Bronze medal in 1989 and Advanced Resuscitation in 1992 and became a Training Officer in 1991. Shelly had a passion to see nippers (now juniors) thrive and has made it her life long ambition to do that. Shelly has been heavily involved in forming, developing and extending the Henley Juniors. Her commitment has gone over 20 years now. She has been the Team Manager at all State Titles for the Henley Juniors. She has been an Age Group leader for 15 years, which is a huge commitment. She was instrumental in the reformation in the Junior Committee. Shelly obtained Level 1 Surf Coach in 2010 and Surf Coach Official in 2013. She has been a dedicated and passionate Age group leader for many years and has seen many junior grow up into senior ranks into the club. She has been instrumental in being involved into the expansion of the juniors from 5 kids to over 250 strong today. She has been on the Junior Representative committee representing Henley. Shelly was awarded the Chook and Beverly Fielder Trophy in 2002/03 season and the President Trophy in 2007/08. Shelly also has been involved in the ‘On the Same Wave’ Program were people from cultural diversity backgrounds be involve with lifesaving with Roy Menner and Henley is now one of the South Australian leading clubs in this program.
