    CARDIAC SURGERY

Cardiac surgery is a surgery on the heart

and/or great vessels performed by a cardiac

surgeon. Frequently, it is done to treat

complications of ischemic heart disease (forexample, coronary artery bypass grafting),

correct congenital heart disease, or treat valvular

heart disease created by various causes includingendocarditis. It also includes heart

    transplantation.

    Open heart surgery

This is a surgery in which the patient's chest is

opened and surgery is performed on the heart.

The term "open" refers to the chest, not to the

heart itself. The heart may or may not be opened

depending on the particular type of surgery.

The heart has 4 cavities, two superior atria and

two inferior ventricles. The atria receive the

blood from the veins (inferior and superior venacava) and transmit it to the ventricles which

pump the blood through the arteries..

    Atrial Septal Defect Closure

    The technique consists in

    placing this membrane at

    the level of the

    regurgitation during anopen heart surgery.

    Ventricular Septal Defect Repair

    This operation consists in

    closing the

    communication between

the two ventricles, withthe help of an artificial

    membrane. The surgeon

    must then open his

patient's thorax and putthis artificial membrane

    in place.

    Coronary Artery Bypass Graft

    Surgery (CABG)

    It creates new

    pathways around

    narrowed or blocked

coronary arteries sothat more blood and

    oxygen flows to the

    heart muscle.

    Coronary Artery Bypass Graft

    Surgery (CABG) This surgery uses

    segments of veins or

    arteries taken from

another part of the bodyto bypass coronary

    arteries on the heart that

    are blocked or narrowed.

It diverts blood flow pastthe blockage allowing

    more blood and oxygen

    to flow to the heart.
