Germany. Enlisted 9/12/1915 but was not mobilised until 31/5/1916 into 6th Middlesex Regiment

before being transferred to the Argyles 22/6/1916. To France 15/3/1917. Suffered some

occasions of shell shock; May 1917 and again 28/9/1917 when he appears to have been buried

by a shell. Was captured 23/3/18 at Cambrai. Born in Mersea, parents George & Catherine of

York Cottage. Married to Alice of Waterside Cottage Paglesham leaving 1 child. She remarried

1925 to Henry Hall. On Paglesham Memorial and is also remembered on the West Mersea

Memorial.. Inscription on headstone "Rest in peace".

is considered an error and it is Walter that should be remembered.

Killed in action. Was wounded in 27/1/16 which appears to have happened before going

overseas. His military career appears confused. He joined the Middlesex Regiment in November

1914 but seems to have joined the Kings Royal Rifle Corps in November 1915. He was struck off

the roll as a deserter on 28/12/15 by the KRRC and a witness stated that he left the camp with

his kitbag. Records seem to show that he was arranging a transfer to 18th Middlesex where his

father was serving. In the Middlesex Regiment he progressed to Sergeant in April 1916. Sent to

France 6/6/16. He was reduced to Private after a court martial 25/3/17 for going absent. Was

posted to 1st Battalion 8/2/18 when he became a lance corporal. May have been awarded the

Military Medal. Appears to have been born in Stoke. Married to Beatrice Leeks (sister of the Leek

brothers) in 1915 and lived at Plough House Rayleigh. Father Mr J and mother Julia, of 9

Mason Street Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent. Inscription on headstone "How we loved him"

Essex Regiment (23573). He died serving with 26 Company Machine Gun Corps (I) (10587). He

was in hospital in Liverpool. He returned to France 30/4/18 and survived through the hostilities.

He is said to have driven first lorry into Germany. Born Eastwood. Youngest of three sons of

Oscar & Eliza Wagenitz of Lower Hockley Hall, Hockley. Oscar was a naturalised German. 1911

Census shows John as stockbroker's clerk. Remembered on Hockley Memorial. Inscription on

85 Squadrons. Transferred to 84 Squadron flying SE5 aircraft in February 1918. Died on the first
