Help needed to bring Dad home for Christmas
KERA SKOCYLAS
Drea Tirshman is doing everything she can to bring her spouse Richard Chuckie Smith home for the holidays.
On April 13 of this year Smith, a father of two young children, went over a cliff while snowmobiling in Brandywine Falls Provincial Park near Whistler. He suff ered a brain injury which left him in a non-responsive and minimally conscious state. Since the accident, he has been in a treat-ment facility in Surrey.
He is starting to focus his eyes on things and is more awake, Tirshman said, but there has been no communication yet.
She said Smith goes to hyperbaric oxygen therapy which is a treat-ment that pushes oxygen into the brain and blood and helps reduce swelling and infl ammation of the brain fi ve times a week.
He has been going for about three months and it seems be helping a lot, Tirshman said, and even though it is not covered by Heath Canada, she is going to contin-ue with treatments.
It will end up costing about $30,000, Tirsh-man said.
Even though therapy is costly and money is tight, Tirshman said she is focused on bringing Smith home for Christmas.
Its really important for me and the kids to
have Chuckie home on Christmas morning, she said.
Because Smith spends most of his time in a bed and about four to fi ve hours in a wheelchair, Tirshman is currently working to make their house wheelchair accessible.
Its coming together all at once, Tirshman said. Specialized equipment for Chuckie has been donated from the BC Rehab foundation and was delivered last weekend. And friends of ours worked early Saturday morning to create a side-
walk for his wheelchair.Tirshman said Smith will initially
be able to come home for only a few days at a time and since Christmas will be the fi rst time he has been home, they have to see how it goes.
Now that the bed has arrived, the kids come home every day all excited asking, is dad home yet? Tirshman said.
Th e last thing needed to bring Smith home is a ramp built for the house, which she thinks will cost around $5,000.
Chuckies accident changed my world in ways you could never imag-ine, Tirshman said. We were both working full-time before his accident and now I take care of him full-time. My kids just want their Daddy better again.
Tirshman said she hopes to purchase the special-ized bed for Smith in January so he will be able to come home for weekend visits.
A fundraiser will be held early in the new year to help raise money for the equipment.

A man has been arrested after a three-year-old boy was hit and abandoned at a Surrey bus stop on Saturday.
At about 11 a.m., police received several calls about an aban-doned child at 64 Ave-nue and 152 Street.
Witnesses say they saw a man strike the
boy several times, then get on a bus, leaving the boy behind.
Witnesses told police they found the boy wearing swim trunks, a t-shirt and light jacket. Th ey brought him into a nearby liquor store and gave him toys to play with while they alerted police.
Social media lit up with posts asking for anyone who could
identify by the boy or his parents.
Police say a surveil-lance camera from a store where the boy was found caught im-ages of what appeared to be the man stealing three juice boxes.
Surrey RCMP were able to identify the boy and subsequently arrested his father on a bus at 176 Street and 64 Avenue.
RCMP were able to fi nd the mother through contacts on the mans cellphone.
Th e boy is now safely reunited with his mother, but the
Ministry of Children and Families has been alerted.
Police say they are considering several contributing factors, including drug abuse and mental health issues.
Surrey RCMP say charges of theft, as-sault and abandoning a
child are being recom-mended.
Surrey RCMP is seeking the publics assistance, and asking anyone who may have witnessed this inci-dent, are asked to call the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Th e person killed in a multiple stabbing in Guild-ford last week has been identifi ed as 17-year-old Jaylen Sandhu.
Sandhu was at a home in the 16300-block of 88 Avenue on Th ursday at about 2:30 p.m. when he was stabbed repeatedly. He was able to fl ee that residence and seek help from a neighbour.
He was rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Th e suspect managed to fl ee the scene.
Th e Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) took over the case on Friday morning.
Th e killing is the third in the city in eight days with all the victims under 18 years of age and the 17th murder in Surrey this year.
On Wednesday, Dec. 10, eight-year-old Teagan Batstone was found dead in the trunk of a car in South Surrey. Her mother, Lisa Deanne Batstone, has been charged with her murder.
Th en on Saturday, Dec. 13, 15-year-old Dario Bartoli was swarmed by another group, beat-en and killed. His killers are still at large.
Th e number of homicides in Surrey this year is now the fourth highest in the citys history. Last year was the deadliest year with 25 murders, fol-lowed by 21 homicides in 2005, and in 2009, there were 20 killings in Surrey. Th e average over the last decade is 15 homicides annually.
Newly elected Mayor Linda Hepner did not return Leader phone calls for comment by Th e Leaders press time Monday.
A staff member at city hall said Hepner was un-available and would not comment on the ongoing police investigations.
Any inquiries on the cases should be directed to the RCMP and IHIT as we await additional infor-mation, the staff member said by email.

It is hard to believe a year will have passed on Dec. 29 since my sister, Julie Paskall, the hockey mom, was killed in Newton.
To everyone who assisted in the apprehension of the suspect; the supporters who rallied with the family; the City of Surrey; the hockey community; and those at the RCMP and Integrated Ho-micide Investigation Team who provided the commitment to the family, I would like to thank you.
I would also encourage the many people who have got behind the take back Newton program to help reduce crime in Surrey
throughout the year. We must continue that eff ort not only on the streets, but in our homes to ensure that our lives are not challenged with the same things again.
As far as the support from the media goes, thank you as well. Your diligence in keeping the event in profi le while the suspect was found was appreciated.
Th is has been a year of fi rsts: birthday, Easter, Mothers Day, anniversary, Th anksgiving Day and now Christmas. It has been a diffi cult year for the family.
As we get closer to the new year, we wish everyone the very best and hope our futures together will be bright and full of joy.
Martin Ross
In case you missed the outcome of the latest United Nations climate change conference in Lima, Peru, it was another costly, embarrassing failure.
Th is one is likely to be remembered mostly for a staggeringly stupid stunt by Greenpeace employees, who were threatened with prosecution for defac-ing the Nazca Lines, a world heritage site in the Peruvian desert.
Th ese vast 1,500-year-old petroglyphs, visible from space, are among the great mysteries of archaeology. Time for a change! blared huge yellow letters dragged across the sacred site by paid protesters trampling the delicate terrain. Ill say its time for a change, starting with scratching Greenpeace off your Christmas card list.
Earlier there was the spectacle of Canadas national media, refl exively denouncing Ottawas supposed inaction on greenhouse gases after U.S. President Barack Obama unveiled a surprise cli-mate agreement with China in advance of Peru.
Over to you, Mr. Prime Minister, chirped CBC anchor Wendy Mesley,
joining other TV networks in falsely por-traying the U.S. deal as a breakthrough.
Th is non-binding gesture soon produced many cartoons, one of which shows Obama stripped to his underwear in a poker game with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is surrounded by a pile of chips and an American fl ag.
Th e U.S.-China announcement served as a preview of Peru, where develop-ing countries would again refuse any substantive restrictions on their fuel use. China graciously agreed to continue ramping up its world-leading green-house gas emissions until 2030, while lame-duck Obama pretended he could commit the U.S. to further reductions.
Between them, the U.S. and China account for about half of global hu-man-caused carbon emissions. Due mostly to the surge from China and India, Canadas share has fallen from two per cent to 1.5, which should help put all those tar sands protests into perspective.
Days later, Environment Canada released its latest national emission sta-tistics, an event ignored by most media.
Between 2005 and 2012, total Canadian GHG emissions decreased by 5.1 per cent, while the economy grew by 10.6 per cent over the same period, the report states.
B.C. Environment Minister Mary Polak joined the throngs who jetted to Lima. Th ere she met offi cials from California and other U.S. states to re-announcetheir modest eff orts to put a price on carbon emissions. TV anchors and other wide-eyed inno-cents might have been left with the mistaken impression that the huge U.S. petroleum industry is cutting back, when in fact it has grown enor-mously thanks to shale oil and gas production.
And California continues to pro-duce, by its own state government measure, the most carbon-intensive heavy crude in North America.
Overshadowing all of this is the drop intheworld price of oil, mainly the result of Saudi Arabia fl ooding the market in an eff ort to push
competitors out of business. In the latest sign of the U.S. publics lack of interest in reducing emissions, sales of larger vehicles immediately spiked up as gasoline prices fell.
Im still receiving criticism for a re-cent column in which I declared my-self an agnostic on human-caused global warming. Agnostic means searcher, and my search has contin-ued for real signs of climate change and its potential causes.
Our glaciers are receding, no ques-tion, but the current trend started around the 1850s, when a sport utility vehicle had one horsepower in leather harness and B.C. was about to be declared a British colony.
But amid the noise, there is serious evidence being put forward that our province is undergoing a climate shift with major consequences. And there are calls for action.
Ill discuss that next week.Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and
columnist for Black Press.
With the holiday season upon us, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a wonderful festive season. Th is time of year can be a busy for emergency responders and so I encourage everyone to enjoy the holidays responsibly. Take the necessary precautions, especially on our roadways.
I would also like to thank the citizens of Surrey for their support and com-mitment to making Surrey a great place to live and work. Th e people in this city truly care about public safety and we have been pleased to work with so many of you throughout the year.
As a resident of Surrey, a father, and your offi cer in charge, I am proud of the work we are doing together and look forward to connecting with more of you in the year ahead as we increase our community engagement and mobilization initiatives.
Each December, some of our police offi cers share their Mountie Wish for the community through our social me-dia (https://www.facebook.com/SurreyRCMP). My Mountie Wish is for every citizen of Surrey to take some time and give back to the community in whatever form they can to make someone elses holidays that much brighter.
As always, emergency personnel will be working through-out the holidays to maintain community safety (please note the holiday hours for district offi ces and front counter
services: http://bit.ly/KF8FoE).On behalf of all of us at Surrey Detachment, best wishes for a safe and
relaxing holiday season.

Do you want to play Santa this Christmas in Surrey?
Erica Beckstead, team leader of Th e Whalley Santa Cause, is reaching out for donations in advance of the Dec. 25 event.
Volunteers are also invited to distribute gifts and personal care items (travel-size soaps and shampoos, along with tooth-brushes and toothpaste and
other small items, including candy) in person.
Four years ago while traveling for work I started accumulating so many hotel soaps and sham-poos that I had more than any one person should, she says, explaining the bounty inspired her to come up with a plan to distribute the items as gifts to homeless people in the Whalley area on Christmas Day.
Th at fi rst year, she made 50 hampers full of trial-sized soaps and shampoos. Th en on Christ-mas Day, she and a friend, plus two volunteers recruited from Craigslist marched the sad and lonely streets of the Whalley strip, handing them out to addicts and people lying on the
street.In 2012, her donations dou-
bled, enabling her to make up 100 hampers. She was joined by 16 volunteers.
I was overwhelmed that this was the start of something, she says.
Last year, she made 250 hampers and was joined by 55 volunteers to hand them out. TV personality Ronnie Negus of the Real Housewives of Vancouver helped with donations.
Th e fourth-annual Whalley Santa Cause meeting spot for volunteers is Gateway SkyTrain Station at 1 p.m. Dec. 25 by the taxis. For more on how to help, visit facebook.com/whalleysantacause

TRACY HOLMES
Th e lawyer for a South Surrey woman accused of killing her own daughter last week says his clients mental health casts doubt on whether a trial on her second-degree murder charge can proceed.
Its a very serious concern, Craig Sicotte said outside Surrey Provincial Court Th ursday morn-ing, of Lisa Deanne Batstones condition.
Miss Batstones mental state is very fragile. Without an assurance that shes fi t to stand trial, this cant proceed any further.
Batstone is charged with second-degree murder after being arrested Dec. 10 at the scene of what was fi rst thought to be a minor traffi c incident. Th e body of eight-year-old Teagan Batstone was found in the trunk of the car.
In court, at Sicottes request and as family and friends of the accused listened, Judge Donald Gardner ordered a fi tness assessment of the mother and set her next court appearance for Jan. 5.
Lisa Batstones father, Barry Hamilton, was in court Th ursday, but grateful-ly declined to comment publicly. During the proceedings, he exchanged blown kisses with his distraught daughter and gestured towards his heart.
Friends of Lisa Batstone also did not want to comment publicly, except to say that the 41-year-old was so loved.
Another commented that the mother was head over heels for Teagan.
Sicotte told reporters he knows of nothing to indicate anything other than she was a loving, devoted mother.

Its the day after Christmas and all through the house, wrapping paper scatters the floor, the fridge is stocked with leftovers and families often wonder what comes next?
If you are looking for something exciting and dif-ferent to keep the fun of the holidays going right to the finish line, Fraser Downs in Cloverdale has live harness racing events on both Boxing Day and New Years Day.
Head down to the track and enjoy an afternoon of fun filled with food and friends. This year, finish off 2014 with a chance at a big win, because who says the gifts have to end after Christmas?
At the Fraser Downs racing event, guests have a chance to win a big screen TV. Entry ballots will be in
the racing programs on Boxing Day, Sunday Dec. 28, and New Years Day. Guests can enter each time they visit Fraser Downs during those racing dates and the draw will be held during the second half of the race card on New Years Day.
This year, choose Fraser Downs as the perfect place to round out the season by watching some ex-hilarating races and continuing to share in the spirit of giving back.
Fraser Downs has always been a big supporter of the Cloverdale and Surrey communities, and this year, one of the racehorse owners will be donating all the winnings that his horse Buddys Hope earns in December to the Surrey Food Bank. Fraser Downs and Harness Racing BC have even teamed up to
match those earnings; its racing for a good cause! The first race begins each day at 12:45 p.m., and
on Boxing Day, Learn to Wager Ambassadors will be on hand to help guests understand how to read the program and the tote board, what the odds mean and how to place different types of wagers. Families are always welcome but guests must be 19 years of age or older to place a wager.
As always, there is a heated, enclosed grandstand, with an ever-popular buffet that overlooks the race-track.
With Boxing Day and New Years Day just ahead, its the homestretch of the holidays and there is no better place to be than at the races.
Visit www.fraserdowns.com to learn more.

Th e extra 0.5-per-cent sales tax for transit expansion going to a regional referendum in the spring will be called a Metro Vancouver Congestion Improve-ment Tax.
Th e province has released the question and approved the referendum, which will be offi cially called the Metro Vancouver Trans-portation and Transit Plebiscite.
In a letter to the Metro Mayors Council, Transportation Minister Todd Stone said the new tax would apply to the majority of goods and services that are subject to the PST and are sold or delivered within the region.
Metro mayors had proposed a 0.5-per-cent increase to the Provin-cial Sales Tax, taking it up to 7.5 per cent in the region, to generate an extra $250 million to help fund $7.5 billion in upgrades over 10 years.
Metro Vancouver board chair Greg Moore said making it a separate tax may still amount to the same thing for most residents, but he noted it does provide scope for the province to allow diff erent exemptions, potentially for large purchases like cars.
Last week, car dealers raised concern they may lose business to compet-itors in the Fraser Valley if vehicle buyers face an extra 0.5- per-cent tax within Metro.
I think theyre still analyzing whether there are any exemptions be-yond the PST ones today and what those would be, Moore said.
He noted treating the
tax as a separate line item will be easier for businesses.
Minor refi nements to the proposed ballot were done with input from Elections BC to meet their ballot fairness requirements, Stones letter said.
One change moves the promise of annual audits and independent reporting on how the tax money is spent out of the question and into the preamble.
Th e wording of the provincially approved ballot is also less specifi c about the promised projects.
Where the mayors ballot pledged to build light rail transit from Surrey City Centre to Newton, Guildford and Langley, the provinces now states rapid transit.
Likewise, the fi nal ballot simply says build rapid transit along Broadway in Vancouver
rather than the mayors version to extend the Millennium Line tun-nelled along Broadway.
Th ose changes may raise questions as to whether the province might go against Sur-reys insistence on light rail rather than SkyTrain or Vancouvers prefer-ence for a more costly tunnelled line, rather than cut-and-cover con-struction on Broadway as with the Canada Line on Cambie Street.
Th ats obviously one of the fi rst questions I had, Mayors Council chair Richard Walton said, but added it may just refl ect the prov-inces desire for simpler wording.
Th e minister indicat-ed he wanted to use the more generic description of rapid transit. Th at was their edit.
Stone has previously said fi nal decisions on the scope and design of the Surrey and Vancou-ver transit lines will de-pend on their business cases.
Neither Stone nor his staff responded to requests to clarify the governments intent.
Th e mayors ballot also said it would add more bus service to crowded routes and add new routes in growing areas and add 11 new B-Line rapid bus routes, with fast and frequent service connecting town centres while the fi nal ballot eliminates the promotional language and simply states add bus service and B-Line rapid bus routes.
A new Pattullo Bridge is also part of the package of promised improvements.
Th e ballot also promis-es the tax will help main-tain and upgrade major roads, extend cycling and pedestrian routes and increase service on SkyTrain, Canada Line, SeaBus and West Coast Express.
Also eliminated from the preamble is wording that one million more people will live and work in Metro Vancouver by 2040 and added is a phrase stating the plan is to reduce congestion on roads and bridges and to provide more transit to communities across the region.
Th e fi nal mailed-out ballot will also provide a link to a website for more information.
Ballots for the mail-in plebiscite would go out March 16 and the dead-line for voting would be May 29. It will pass on a 50 per cent plus one majority counted across the region.

The Vernon Vipers were laughing and singing along to loud country music in their dressing room Wednesday night at Kal Tire Place.
It was a mild celebration considering they had just am-bushed the last-place Surrey Eagles 9-0 before 1,450 fans.
Texan Thomas Aldworth pulled the hat trick as the Vipers built up period leads of 6-0 and 9-0 before head coach Mark Ferner played his third and fourth lines most of the final frame. Surrey dropped to 4-24-0-3 (win-loss-tied-over-time loss).
The Eagles, who have 13 rookies after winning the Fred Page Cup two seasons ago, gave up six goals on 18 shots
in the first period. The final shots tally was 44-33 Vernon.
Christian Short started in the Surrey net after being on
injured reserve for almost

seven weeks. The 19-year-old Ontario product, who was on NHL Central Scout-ings radar last year playing prep school in New England, was
relieved briefly by 16-year-old Daniel Davidson after Ver-non went ahead 3-0 just seven minutes in.
Short played the fi-nal 40 minutes, earn-ing a solid shutout in the third period when the shots were even
at 12.The Eagles, who
made the return bus trip in the same day, looked decent in the early going but lost energy forward Spencer Meyer at 4:01 after he checked Brandt from behind
into the side boards in Vernons zone. That left Surrey with 10 forwards, includ-ing two 17-year-old affiliates. Meyer, who turns 19 in Janu-ary, joined Surrey 16 games ago after playing 32 games with
three teams in the Western League.
Blaine Neufeld, 27, was promoted from director player personnel to head coach when former NHLer Peter Schae-fer stepped down after Chuck Westgard
bought out his part-ners to become sole owner of the Eagles in May. The fallout from the move included Schaefer losing his ti-tle as team president.
Neufeld, a former WHL goalie who was a back-up with the
2007 Memorial Cup champion Vancou-ver Giants, says the Eagles are a fragile bunch who have a lost a number of close games. He didnt like what he saw in war-mup and realized the lengthy bus trip was foreign territory for his group.
We assess things piece by piece, said Neufeld, who hails from Winkler, Man. Were in a rebuild mode in terms of our culture and every-thing. Things you stress in that type of situation is attention to detail and prepa-ration, and it wasnt there today.
Neufeld said the Eagles are not a team that holds a pity party after losses.
You cant expect it (morale) to be all that great. I think our kids do a fairly good job of kind of hitting the re-set button. Nobodys talking right now af-ter this type of game and its not fun to be a part of. Theres a lot of anger and there should be. You dont want kids to just roll over and allow it to happen.
Big forward Quinn Lenihan, who netted 14 goals with the Junior B Grandview Steelers last year, said the Eagles are doing their best to be com-petitive.
Its a learning expe-rience for everyone. Were just trying to make the best of it, improve every week, week by week, game by game, shift by shift, thats all you can do.
BLUE LINES: After hosting the Prince George Spruce Kings and Langley Riverman last weekend (after The Leader press deadline), the Eagles are on a one-week Christmas break. They will resume play Sunday at 5 p.m. when they visit the Chilliwack Chiefs. The two teams will play a return match next Tuesday (Dec. 20) at 7:11 p.m. at the South Surrey Arena.
